MEET THE SMALLEST HORSE IN THE WORLD THAT'S SHORTER THAN A GREYHOUND! By Adam Millward VIDEO: https://youtu.be/2E2OzDN3GhU
Guinness World Records 2020 – launching on 5 September – reveals some of the biggest record-setting stars. Within the pages of this year’s bonanza of superlatives, you'll find everything from the largest pizza and the largest crocodyliform ever to the tallest hat and the longest cat. But not all records are larger than life… Doing it for the little guys is a miniature Appaloosa from Poland. Bombel ("Bubble" – sonamed for his rotund shape) is the shortest male horse, standing just 56.7 cm from hoof to shoulder blades. Bombel is by far the smallest equine resident of KasKada stud farm in Łódź, where he lives alongside many larger horses. His owners Patryk and Katarzyna Zielińska insist that, despite his small stature, their vertically disinclined stallion has "a huge personality and a huge heart." According to the American Miniature Horse Association, the standard for a mini horse is anything below 9.5 hands (96.5 cm) at the withers, so Bombel comfortably qualifies. The Zielińskas first saw Bombel in 2014, when he was just two months old. Even then, he was noticeably tiny, though his parents were normal size for miniature horses. The professional horse breeders had a suspicion from early on that the new addition to their stables was special, as Katarzyna explained: "We thought something is going on with him. When he started growing up, we saw he wasn't growing as he was supposed to be. That was when we decided we should approach Guinness World Records." While his status as the smallest horse in the world may now have confirmed him to be one-of-a-kind, Bombel hasn’t let the glory go to his head. He still finds time to do some voluntary work. Once a month, he visits a local children's hospital to help brighten the day of the young patients. Having seen horses going into US hospitals as emotional support animals, Katarzyna was inspired to do the same. "Bombel has changed our lives completely, because he allows us to help other people and make kids happy." Interestingly, reactions at the hospital to this small horse tend to vary between young and old. "The kids just love Bombel and they don’t care about his size. The adults are: 'What’s that!' They cannot even imagine such a small horse…" The shortest horse ever is Thumbelina, who sadly passed away in 2018. This miniature sorrel brown mare from St Louis, Missouri, USA, measured 44.5 cm tall. Guinness World Records is currently on the look-out for a new shortest female horse, so if you have a minute mare that you think could be a contender, get in touch! Bombel isn’t the only pint-sized farmyard resident making his world debut in GWR 2020. The short stallion is also joined by the shortest bull, Humphrey. Katarzyna for one is looking forward to receiving her copy of GWR 2020. "We're so happy and proud to have Bombel in the Guinness World Records book," she enthused. "We can’t wait to see his pictures. It's great prestige for us." 2
Jayna Taylor-Smith You’ll never believe this... Kleenex tissues were originally intended for gas masks When there was a cotton shortage during World War I, Kimberly-Clark developed a thin, flat cotton substitute that the army tried to use as a filter in gas masks. The war ended before scientists perfected the material for gas masks, so the company redeveloped it to be smoother and softer, then marketed Kleenex as facial tissue instead. 4

Rick Muscoplat If your goal is to keep your car in great shape, don’t even consider doing this or you’ll regret it. Never overfill the tires to “get better gas mileage The Internet is brimming with testimonials from people who claim they upped their mileage simply by inflating their tires to the maximum pressure listed on the sidewall. What they don’t tell you about is the rougher ride, premature tire wear, longer stopping distances and increased repair costs due to worn-out suspension components. The recommended tire pressure for your car is listed on a placard inside the driver’s door frame and it’s based on vehicle weight along with the best possible handling. Inflating your tires to the maximum pressure listed on the tire is okay if you’re hauling a very heavy load. But you must reduce the tire pressure to the recommended pressure once you remove the load. Driving a normal load on over-inflated tires reduces rolling resistance and that can increase your mileage slightly. That means you have less rubber in contact with the road, which reduces traction. Over-inflation increases stopping distances, causes the tires to slip and hydroplane on wet roads and reduces the life of the tire. The much harder tires also absorb less impact vibration so they transmit more road shock to your entire suspension system, causing a rougher ride. Worse yet, the additional tire bounce wears out your car’s struts, strut mounts, shocks, springs, ball joints and control arms much faster. Any mileage gains you get from decreased rolling resistance are more than offset by decreased safety factors and increased suspension repair costs.

Jen McCaffery You’re set to start your day and oh no! Dead cell battery. Get your phone out of the sun Avoid exposing your phone to temperatures 95 degrees and higher, Apple advises. The heat can damage your battery capacity. In fact, your phone’s software may limit charging to about 80 percent when the phone gets hotter than the recommended temperature. 8

Layla Laurence I grew up in a home full of love, high expectations, constant support, work, play, sports, music, church, vacations, game nights and family dinners. While it wasn’t a perfect childhood, it was pretty close. So when I got pregnant with my first child and my parents generously offered to be my full-time child care when I returned to work, I whole-heartedly agreed. If I couldn’t be the one with them every hour of the day, there were no two better equipped people to help me parent my kids. Now, more than seven years have passed. They’ve chauffeured to years of pre-school, countless swim lessons and sports. They’ve changed more dirty diapers than a retired person has any business tackling. They’ve witnessed rolling over, first steps and first words. While it’s been amazing to watch my kids grow up having grandparents be a part of their daily lives, there have also been some unexpected challenges. For anyone considering having their parent’ or in-laws become their childcare, here are a few perks and challenges that I have experienced having my parents help raise my kids. THE PERKS They are the next best thing to me. Heck! Maybe even a step up on a lot of days. My parents know how I want to raise my kids and they love them, challenge them and limit them very similarly to how I do, myself. They document important events. Any working mom will tell you that one of the hardest parts of being away from her babies during the day is missing the “firsts”. First steps, first words, first cartwheel. My parents know this and are always snapping away and taking videos making sure that I don’t miss too much. The price is right. Honestly, I don’t know how I would have afforded to have kids if I’d had to pay for childcare. Chucking out hundreds to thousands of dollars a month for a babysitter, nanny or daycare definitely would take most, if not all, of my take-home pay. They don’t just watch my kids, they raise them. Most daycares are expected to watch your kid. You expect them to learn some social skills and manners. My parents do that and so much more. They are literally my kids’ second set of parents. When it comes to raising kids with a village, I’m so blessed they’re in mine. They have a close relationship with my kids. Because my parents are with my kids every single day, they know them to a different level than most grandparents know their grandkids. They are close to a degree only rivaled by that of myself and my husband. The relationship they have with my kids is precious and makes all of them better. They love it. While the job is hard and tiring, my parents maintain to this day that they would have it no other way. They love knowing that they have a huge role in the upbringing of their grandbabies and are also helping their daughter at the same time. When someone gives you a gift so big, so generous, that you know you can never repay them, it can feel heavy. THE CHALLENGES They have to administer more discipline than the average grandparent. Most grandparents get to be the ones to spoil their grandkids with candy, take them on fun outings and let them break rules once in a while. Since my parents are the primary caregivers during the work week, they have to have daily expectations and sometimes don’t get to be the carefree, spoil-them-rotten grandparents they would like to be. It’s hard to give feedback. Sometimes I disagree with the amount of screentime my kids are allowed, or the amount of treats that are consuming. If my kids went to traditional daycare, or I hired a nanny I wouldn’t hesitate to voice my concerns in these areas. After all, they would be employed by me. The line is a bit less clear when it comes to my parents. I feel awkward sharing small concerns with them or asking them to change how or what they do because they are my parents and they are doing me a huge favor by watching them. It’s a hard job. Obviously. Parenting is hard and draining when you’re in your 20s or 30s. Try doing it ten hours a day when you’re in your 60s and 70s. Keeping up with my kids and all their activities is exhausting and I worry that my parents will get run down with the demand that it has on them. I feel like I owe them. When someone gives you a gift so big, so generous, that you know you can never repay them, it can feel heavy. When I start to feel like I owe my parents for all they do, I have to realize that they’ve given us a gift. Gifts are not meant to be paid back, they are given out of love and meant to be graciously accepted and appreciated. At the end of the day, the perks of having my parents watch my kids far outweighs the few challenges. The closeness that is the result of their daily interaction and the immense help that my parents are to us has been one of the hugest blessings of my life. My parents raised me and now they are helping raise my kids, and together, I think we’re doing a pretty awesome job.

Corey Whelan Some employment don’ts are obvious, but these seemingly innocuous behaviors could also cost you your job. Say ho, ho, ho instead of no, no Gift giving, and receiving, is a big part of holiday fun, but accepting a gift from a vendor or client is frowned upon at many companies. If you work for a political organization or publicly held corporation, this practice is almost guaranteed to cost you your employment. “At two corporations that I manage human relations for, one employee received a warning, and another one got fired because they accepted holiday gifts from vendors,” says David Lewis, president, CEO and founder of OperationsInc, a human resources consulting firm. “In one instance, this practice was an unwritten rule. In the other, it was a documented rule, included in the employee handbook.” The reason for this practice is obvious—your employer wants you to be beyond reproach, should anyone ever question your professional actions. Getting presents from vendors or clients may appear to unfairly influence your decisions. 12
Charlotte Hilton Andersen Number one is not picking up your doggo’s poop— here’s what you need to know beyond the basics. Ignoring what your dog is trying to tell you Just like we like other people to listen to us, we need to listen to what our dogs are trying to say, Askeland says. When dogs bark, snarl, lunge, or whimper, they are trying to tell you they are uncomfortable with the situation and you need to take it seriously, she says.
“Dismissing this behavior could put someone else or another dog at risk of injury,” she adds. Pets can communicate a wide range of feelings and wants, but since they can’t exactly talk, there are things your dog secretly wishes you knew. 13

Emily DiNuzzo Avoid this rude habit that bother both hotel employees and other guests. Wearing your bathrobe out and about There is a time and a place to wear your bathrobe, and it’s not at the hotel restaurant. According to Pedro Richardson, who worked in the hotel industry for 12 years as a waiter, receptionist, and manager, recommends guests keep the robe for the spa or pool areas. “I understand they feel more comfortable and at home, but when you are staying in a top luxury hotel, it just doesn’t go with the environment,” Richardson says. In one of the hotels where Richardson worked, a top UK CEO actually would go to the restaurant in his bathrobe, a big “no-no,” according to Richardson. 16
