CANCER SURVIVOR IS FIRST PERSON TO SWIM ENGLISH CHANNEL FOUR TIMES NON-STOP Chris Kitching A breast cancer survivor has become the first person to swim the English Channel four times non-stop. Sarah Thomas, 37, completed the astonishing 84-mile challenge in 54 hours and 13 minutes and was greeted with champagne and chocolates as she landed in Dover. Afterwards she admitted she was "pretty tired" and planned to sleep for the day, saying the hardest part was dealing with the salt water and a jellyfish sting. The American set off in the early hours of Sunday morning and swam non-stop until she completed her final lap at about 6.30am on Tuesday. She overcame sleep deprivation, exhaustion, the chilly water temperature and windy and choppy sea conditions during the final leg of her historic four way crossing. It comes a year after the open water ultra marathon swimmer completed treatment for breast cancer after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of the disease in November 2017. Ms Thomas, who was accompanied by a support team on boats, dedicated her swim to "all the survivors out there". Moments after completing the feat, she told the BBC: "Every length had something that was really hard about it. Coming back from France the last time was definitely hard. It took forever and the current pushed me all over. "I got stung in the face by a jellyfish and it wasn't as cold as I thought it might be but it was still chilly." The hardest part, she said, was dealing with salt water which made her throat and mouth sore. A photo posted on her Facebook page shows the exhausted simmer resting on the pebbled shore in Dover after completing the swim. The caption reads: "SHE DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Ms Thomas was congratulated by some of the world's top athletes. Lewis Pugh, a British endurance swimmer who was the first person to complete long-distance swims in every ocean, tweeted: "Extraordinary, amazing, super-human!!! Just when we think we’ve reached the limit of human endurance, someone shatters the records.
"Huge congratulations to Sarah Thomas on swimming the English Channel 4x continuously!!!" Only four swimmers have swam the Channel three times non-stop. Ms Thomas, from Denver, Colorado, is the first person to complete a fourth leg. The shortest route between England and France is 21 miles but it passes through one of the busiest shipping routes in the world. She set a goal of becoming the first person to complete the quadruple to inspire her while she underwent grueling cancer treatment, including chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation. Before the swim, the healthcare recruiter wrote on Facebook: “I’ve been waiting for this swim for over 2 years now and have fought so hard to get here.
“Am I 100%? No. But I’m the best that I can be right now, with what I’ve been through, with more fire and fight than ever.” It's not the first time Ms Thomas has swam the Channel. She first crossed it in 2012 and then again in 2016. She set a distance record of 80 miles in 56 hours when she swam non-stop across Lake Powell on the border of Utah and Arizona. 2
"Gedoriewaar jongeman", ek voel hoe die saligheid oor my spoel. My Ma en ek gaan soek vir my skoene... toe was die Cuthberts skoenwinkels nog dié skoene plek… By die ingang was daar so gevlegte draad matjie… Kan jy dit oorvertel… my ma is op krukke, en met die inkom slag hak haar kruk en sy slaan neer, sy skuif so oor die vloer en die man agter die toonbank skrik hom oorhoeks en vra vir my ma: "Wat doen jy Mevrou?" My arme Ma wil nog iets sê, toe sit ek my 2 hande so in my sye en parmantig antwoord ek die oom: "Nee Oom, ons Etsebethe kom so by 'n winkel in, en ek gaan nie Etsebeth spel nie". Ek was so 7 jaar oud… My ma en die oom was albei vir 'n oomblik sprakeloos… Jaco het so 'n spierwit bos hare gehad... Hy was so 5 jaar oud toe ons in Opuwo gebly het…

Claire Nowak These phrases are meant to sound like random letters and numbers, but in certain situations, they can be signs of a serious emergency. Code Adam This is an alert for a missing child that’s used in many public locations like malls, hospitals, supermarkets, and museums. Walmart coined the term in 1994 in memory of Adam Walsh, a 6-year-old who was abducted from a Sears and was found murdered. In 2003, Congress mandated that all federal buildings use Code Adam procedures. 4
INGREDIENTS: • 1/2 cup honey • 1/2 cup Nutella • 4 cup Rice Krispies • Mini Vanilla Cupcake • 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons all -purpose flour • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1/2 stick unsalted butter, room temperature • 1/2 cup sugar • 1 large egg • 1/4 cup milk • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • Topping • 1 cup Nutella • 2 tablespoons color sprinkle METHOD: To prepare Rice Krispies nest, microwave honey and Nutella together for 30 seconds in a medium-size bowl. Stir to make sure they are thoroughly combined. If not, continue to microwave for 10 seconds at a time and stir until they are. Mix Rice Krispies into the bowl and stir, coasting all of the Krispies. Press it into a well-greased standard-sized muffin tin, making sure that it goes up the sides of each depression. Refrigerate for at least 3 hours. To prepare mini muffin, preheat over to 180°C. Grease mini muffin tin or line with muffin liners. In a large bowl, sift flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Mix well. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream butter on medium-high speed, until light and fluffy. Gradually add sugar and continue to beat until well combined and fluffy. Reduce the mixer speed to medium and slowly add the egg until just blended. With the mixer on low, slowly add half the flour mixture; mix until just blended. Add the milk and vanilla extract, mix until just blended. Slowly add remaining flour mixture, scraping down sides of the bowl with a spatula, as necessary, until just blended. Divide batter evenly among prepared muffin cups. Transfer muffin tin to oven and bake for 10 to 12 minutes. Transfer muffin tin to a wire rack and let cupcakes cool completely. Remove muffin liners if using them, and place one mini cupcake in each Rice Krispies nest. If the mini cupcake is taller than the nest, gently press on the top of the cupcake to flatten it a bit. Remove the whole nest from the tin. To finish with the topping, microwave Nutella for 8 to 10 seconds for easy spreading. Gently smear about one tablespoon of Nutella on top of treat. Top with color sprinkle to garnish. 5

Jayna Taylor-Smith Everyone in the British royal family has his or her own quirks, habits, and secrets that you didn’t know. The queen travels with her royal Navy doctor everywhere, but not without her own bag of blood, too. This is typical if she travels to a place where the blood supply is questionable. 9

Do you own a classic Ferrari 250? Are you looking for the perfect personalised number plate? Your luck might be in, as the UK’s DVLA is about to put ‘250 S’ up for sale. It will hit the block the 17 September autumn auction. The reserve is £2,500, which might seem like a lot for registration plate, but hold up. A similar plate, ’25 O’, bought for a 250 Short Wheelbase, became the highestpriced personal plate sold by the DVLA in 2014, hammering for £400,000. The chances are, however, that if you’re the recent purchaser of a Ferrari 250, £400,000 isn’t going to seem like an awful lot. The potential with this new plate is huge – even the DVLA isn’t sure how high it will go. “While we have high expectations for every one of our 1,250 lots on offer, there’s no question the personalised registration ‘250 S’ could be of particular significance for those collectors of ultra-rare Ferraris out there. As for its value, we cannot predict what it will fetch.” Getting into specifics, the 250 S is the first of many 250-badged Ferraris built in the 50s and 60s. It first raced at the 1952 Mille Miglia and then at Le Mans. The name ‘250’ came from the size of the engine, divided by the number of cylinders. In this case, it’s a 3.0-litre 12-cylinder, so that’s 3,000cc divided by 12 – 250.
There are a couple of other Ferrari-themed plates up for grabs, too. Got a 488 Pista or F8 Tributo that’s missing a little something? Fear not. ‘P115 TAA’ and ‘T218 UTO’ are available. They’re a bit more attainable, each with £250 price tags. They, along with ‘250 S’ will be among some 1,250 plates up for sale. 11
Rene Otinga Visitors to the Mara were left in awe after coming across one of the most unique sites in nature in the form of a rare-colored young Zebra. Zebras are typified by their black and white strips but for this particular one, it had all the makings of a unique animal. Rare coloured young Zebra spotted in Maasai Mara. The unique herbivore was first spotted at the Maasai Mara Reserve by a guide who took photos that instantly went viral. A quick look at the zebra will reveal why many netizens took interest in as it had unique spots rather than the typical stripes. Antony Tira, the renowned guide who made the discovery revealed that because of the unique design of the young zebra, he initially thought the it was deliberately painted with the spots for purposes of migration. “At first I thought it was a zebra that had been captured and painted or marked for purposes of migration. I was confused when I first saw it," he told Nation. The Zebra, which apparently has a rare melanin disorder, was barely a week old at the time it was spotted by the guide. Because of the “additional wonder at the Maasai Mara reserve, hundreds of tourists found themselves wanting to get a glimpse, and perhaps a photo of the rare animal. Wildlife specialist at Matira Camp Parmale Lemein noted this was probably the very first case in the Mara. So what is the fate of the unique zebra? Since its unique color is actually an abnormality? Animals with albinism can live up to six months, sometimes even more, according to scientists. Known to few, Zebras are technically not black and white animals and the stripes are simply an adaptation of nature. The default color of a zebra is black but the white stripes are formed from the inhibition of melanin. It is an adaptation of nature which scientists believe is meant to keep insects as bay as the monochrome pattern seems to throw off the visual systems of flies.

By Echo Zhan Anyone who likes water parks or similar venues would probably love to have a go on this: the world's longest mountain/hillside water slide. The record-breaking slide, located in Lishui, China, is 2723.08 m long with waterway winding its way down the side of Puhuasi Mountain. Thrill-seekers travel at speeds up to 30 km/h as they glide down the mountain with the finishing point 226 m below the start of this enormous slide which took two years to build. The whole journey, including the water slide itself and the mountain rafting, takes nearly an hour. "After returning to the homeland, how to develop it into a good way is always on my mind. At first, we just want to be the best in China, then we realize this could be a Guinness World Records title to attract the world," said Lin Wenbi, General Manager of Puhua Travel Development Co. Ltd. 13

Water is our body’s mechanical oil—without it, it can’t function. You lose about 8 percent of your body water while on a flight. This is because the humidity in the climate-controlled environment can be as low as 10 to 15 percent. . 14
