MULTI-TALENTED MINI-PIG HOGS THE LIMELIGHT AND BRINGS JOY TO HER COMMUNITY By Adam Millward
VIDEO: https://youtu.be/W_7a3O0s3R8 Proving that dogs and cats don’t have a monopoly on pet trick records is a porcine prodigy who makes an appearance in Guinness World Records 2020. Joy from Iowa, USA – whose owner has described as a “bit of a diva” and “not your average hog” – showed off her diverse repertoire on 16 January 2018 to claim the record for most tricks by a pig in one minute: 13. Among the myriad skills on display were classics such as "sit" to more involved techniques such as playing a toy piano. The full set of tricks completed were: Sit, Shake hands, Wait, Leave (ignore treat), Go ahead (take treat), Reverse, Dance, Honk horn, Play the piano, Remove a ring, Knock over a pin, Pick up, Roll a ball. Two additional tricks had to be disallowed as one was performed before the command was issued ("unroll the rug") and another fell outside the allotted time ("ring the bell"). "People are really surprised to see pigs are so intelligent and can do tricks," said Joy’s owner, Dawn Bleeker (USA), who's been a lifelong fan of all things with trotters and curly tails. "A lot of them walk away saying, 'Gosh, my dog doesn't even do that!'" In fact, Joy's introduction to tricks began with methods typically used on more "traditional" house pets. "Not having an indoor pet before, I asked a puppy trainer to come work with my family," Dawn told us. "We had three private sessions at my home. The trainer was amazed at how quickly Joy caught on. "Joy knows that she’s achieved success through verbal praise and treats,” her owner continued. “We know when she understands from her tail wagging excitedly and her eyes lighting up!" "Because Joy really loved doing tricks, we just kept on introducing her to new ones," Dawn Bleeker, owner of Joy the pig. Some of the elements in her record-setting routine were harder to teach than others. "Having Joy learn how to take off the stackable rings (and then put them back on) was the hardest trick," explained Dawn. "We had to teach her how to put something in her mouth and not clamp down on it too hard. In the beginning, she would bite so hard that her tusk would get caught in the ring!" This gifted porker's record-breaking abilities aren't the only string to her bow, as she has also become something of a local celebrity in her Iowa hometown of Newton. But her path to glory hasn't all been plain sailing. When the Bleeker family first decided to look into adopting a piglet back in 2011, they discovered that the animals were banned as pets under a Newton bylaw that classified all swine as "dangerous". Undeterred, the Bleekers set about trying to secure an exception for miniature pigs, gathering research, getting neighbours' signatures and generally aiming to change hearts and minds. They approached the City Council, but their initial petition was denied. Bleeker's husband and three daughters took the denial as a setback, but for Dawn it felt as if her dream of owning a pet pig was slipping away. Eventually, the Bleekers returned to the council, and the vote swung their way: 6-1 in favour. A few days later, Joy flew from Texas to her new home in Iowa. Joy's rise from banned hog to the darling of the community began with the local movie theatre going bankrupt, when she was aged around six months. To avoid their downtown neighbourhood becoming a "dead zone", Dawn (who already worked part-time at the cinema) decided to take over the venue. Not wanting to leave "part of their family" out of this adventure, Joy has become the much-loved mascot of the Capitol II Theatre. She can sometimes be found welcoming movie-goers and showing off her tricks outside the cinema, and inside she even has her own special "dressing room", complete with costume rail and chaise longue where visitors can see her chilling out and meet her under supervision. "Joy is what separates us from other theatres," Dawn told us proudly. "She is our identity. Sure, there's a big, new movie theatre with recliners in Altoona [a city 25 miles west of Newton], but we have something special. We have Joy." "People come in, and they are just excited to see her," Bleeker continued. "To see their expressions and catch them talking to her, it just brings a smile to my face. I like to think she brightens up people’s lives, if only for a few minutes." Newton resident Kari Kennedy confirmed the appeal of this loveable if unorthodox mascot: "Seniors, kids, everyone knows Joy. And there are people who come down to see a movie, or who come to this theatre instead of another, just to see Joy." Asked how it feels for Joy to be starring in GWR 2020, Dawn enthused: "Being in the book is pretty amazing. Joy is part of our lives, so we get to enjoy her awesomeness every day. Now she'll be in a book in some child's room or some adult's house, and they'll get to see a glimpse of how special Joy is." For anyone considering getting a mini pig of their own, Dawn had a few words of wisdom to offer: "I think more people should be open to accepting that miniature pigs do make good pets. But it definitely takes a certain type of person to own a miniature pig. "They are extremely rewarding, but also very time-consuming. Because of their intelligence, they need mental stimulation or they can become bored and destructive. "Miniature pigs are emotional animals who bond strongly, so owners need to be ready to commit to owning their pig for 15–20 years. "Size is also something to consider," Dawn added. "Like with people, the end size is hard to tell. A person needs to be ready to love and keep a 136-kg miniature pig as they would a 27-kg one." And the secret to trick training for anyone with ambitions of setting a record with their own home hog? "I would say the key is finding the right treat that will get your pig’s attention and make it worthwhile."

Wat ek ookal doen, ek wei my volle aandag daaraan.

In your pocket Keeping your phone in your pocket seems logical, but you could be doing more harm than good. According to Lilly Friedman, MD, this is actually the worst place to store your cell phone. “When cell phones are on, connected to a wireless network, and placed in a pocket, the radiation is two to seven times higher than if it were placed in a purse or holster,” she says. There is a correlation between radiation from a cell phone and tumor growth, she adds. Plus, radiation can change the structure of DNA and affect male fertility, according to Dr. Friedman. The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer also found that cell phone radiation is additionally carcinogenic to humans. Merely sitting on your phone could cause health issues such as sciatica or other back problems as well. 4

A woman climbed over a fence into the African lion enclosure at The Bronx Zoo, then posted videos of the incident on her Instagram page. The footage, posted by the woman, who calls herself Queen Empress MyĂĄh LareĂŠ Israelite on Instagram, appears to have been captured by someone accompanying her. She is seen climbing over the fence into the enclosure and standing just metres away from the male lion. In response to a voice in the background heard saying: "You aren't supposed to do that." The woman responds: "I want to get closer to him, sorry." A second video shows her in the enclosure standing opposite the lion, which stares directly at her. In the caption for the video she wrote: "My soul is pure this is why I made it out." Another video posted on her page captured her waving to the lion, who is stood still staring at her. The footage captured her speaking to the lion, in what looks like an attempt to provoke a reaction from it. She refers to the animal as "baby" and says: "I love you baby." The incident was also caught on camera by another visitor at the zoo. The videos from the woman were posted on Sunday on her Instagram page, although the incident happened on Saturday, according to The Washington Post. A spokesperson from The Bronx Zoo told CNN: "The action was a serious violation and unlawful trespass that could have resulted in serious injury or death." The Bronx Zoo filed a complaint for criminal trespass, the New York Police Department told CNN. 9
“There isn’t any significant difference between the various brands of whiskey, or cigarettes or beer. They are all about the same. And so are the cake mixes and the detergents, and the margarines… The manufacturer who dedicates his advertising to building the most sharply defined personality for his brand will get the largest share of the market at the highest profit.” – David Ogilvy 10

Hand washing is an essential and important part of not getting sick, or making others sick. If you only wash your hands for a few seconds, or if you sort of wave them under the tap and then dry your hands on a grubby towel, it’s time to step up your game. Our skin is pretty good at keeping germs out, but the bacteria and viruses that cause colds, flu and diarrheal illnesses can ride around on our hands waiting for an opportunity to infect someone. Whenever you touch your hands to someone’s bodily fluids (or just a random surface that someone may have sneezed on), you can pick up those germs. And then when you touch your eyes, mouth, or nose — or eat finger food, which is basically the same as touching your mouth — you can possibly transmit those germs in a way that makes you more likely to get sick. Here’s how to wash your hands so that you stand a chance of avoiding the office plague: Turn on the water: Warm or cool water works just fine and doesn’t irritate skin as much as hot water. Lather up with soap: It doesn’t have to be antibacterial; regular is fine. Turn off the water: You’re going to be here a while. Scrub for 20 seconds, making sure to get the backs of your hands and between your fingers. Hum “happy birthday” twice. Yes, this will feel like too long. Most people get bored after about 10 seconds. But you can do this. We believe in you. Rinse your hands: Dry your hands, because germs stick better to wet hands than dry ones. Air dry or use a clean towel. If you’re washing your hands a lot, apply a moisturiser from time to time to keep your skin from getting too dry and cracked. In a situation where you can’t wash your hands, hand sanitiser is better than nothing. But it works best on dry, clean skin, and you have to rub the sanitiser for about 20 seconds until it evaporates and dries out for best results. 12

Hong Kong-based shipping mogul Anthony Marden is selling Adastra, a futuristic 140-foot trimaran that looks like a “Star Wars” fighter jet. A 140-foot superyacht that recalls a “Star Wars” fighter jet as much as a watercraft has hit the market priced to sell. Hong Kong-based shipping magnate Anthony Marden is selling his custom-made trimaran “Adastra,” which he’s spun around the world from Ibiza, Spain, to Bali, Indonesia, for the last seven years, according to a website he’s launched to market the superyacht. While the site says only that the vessel is “priced to sell,” the billionaire businessman is reportedly asking $12 million, according to Robb Report. “She’s a total head-turner,” Mr. Marden told the luxury-lifestyle news site in a story published on Thursday. “She’s pretty much the only boat anyone looks at. Everyone stops and takes a photo.” He could not immediately be reached for comment. Marketed as “the coolest adventure yacht,” Adastra has room for nine passengers and six crew members, with two levels of living space, including an open main deck clad in lightweight oak, according to a brochure from China-based boatbuilder McConaghy. The vessel, designed by John Shuttleworth, married Mr. Marden’s desire for a fast, globetrotting cruising yacht with his wife Elaine’s interest in having the comfort of luxury amenities, according to a profile of the watercraft in Boat International magazine shortly after it was finished. The result is a ship made from lightweight carbon fiber with a range of 9,000 nautical miles plus warm modern interiors and plenty of guest accommodation. The interior of the main deck includes an indoor lounge area, dining table and wraparound windows with “superb views,” according to McConaghy. Outside, there’s a bar, sofa and dining area. A garage under the aft deck has room for a smaller watercraft, and was built with a door that folds out to create a diving and sunbathing platform. Below deck, the futuristic design flanks the isolated en-suite master bedroom with curving inverted walls. There are two additional guest bedrooms accessible from the other end of the main deck. In a video on the website marketing the boat, Ms. Marden said: “When you see love and attention that’s gone into building this boat, it’s just amazing.” 14

“The main reason why aircrafts are painted white or light colors is to reflect sunlight and minimize both the heating and potential damage from solar radiation,” John Hansman, a Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at MIT, says. “It’s basically the same as putting sunblock on.” White airplanes also helps airlines spend less to cool the cabin and protects parts of the plane that are susceptible to heat damage. 15
Krista Carothers You know all those little mysteries that you stop to ponder but forget to look up? We get to the bottom of them; so now you know. Why do my fingers get wrinkly when I’m swimming? It may seem as if your skin is absorbing extra water during a soak in the pool or bathtub, but that’s not the case. Researchers have known since the 1930s that people with nerve damage in their fingers don’t prune up in the same way, meaning it’s not just happening through osmosis, according to Scientific American. Instead, it’s caused by blood vessels below the skin that constrict, which seems to have the evolutionary advantage of making it easier for us to pick up wet objects. For a 2013 study published in Biology Letters, scientists found that subjects with wrinkled fingers were faster at picking up submerged marbles (but didn’t do any better at picking up dry objects) than those with unwrinkled fingers. 16
