A NAIL-BITING ENCOUNTER WITH THE WOMAN WHO HAS THE LONGEST FINGERNAILS By Craig Glenday When Lee Redmond last cut her fingernails, the Swedish supergroup ABBA were at the height of their powers, the first Star Trek movie had just been released in cinemas, and the Sony Walkman had only just hit the shelves. And very few people had even heard of a compact disc, let alone listened to one. It was 1979, and although she didn’t know it, Lee was embarking on a mission that would see her become one of the most iconic record-breakers in history. By the time I finally got the chance to meet Lee, her fingernails had grown to epic proportions. As I waited for her in the arrivals lounge at Heathrow Airport, I could tell she was on her way – there was a lot of excited chatter from the disembarking passenger, and the look of wide-eyed astonishment on their faces was a clue that Lee was just minutes behind. You could also hear Lee coming – the unforgettable click-clack of her nails accompanied her everywhere she went! Lee, from Salt Lake City in Utah, USA, grew the nails on both of her hands to an incredible 8.65 m in total, as measured on the Guinness World Records Italian TV show. If it helps to put this into context, the actor Verne Troyer (Mini Me in the Austin Powers movies) stood 81 cm or just over 2 ft 6 in – making each of Lee’s nails longer than Verne!
I’d invited Lee to London to help with the launch of our latest book, and as you’ll hear on the Guinness World Records: Behind the Book podcast, there was some awkwardness on the aircraft flying her across the Atlantic. This was mostly to do with the challenge of using the lavatories – never easy at the best of times – but you can hear for yourself on she got on. While in the GWR offices, Lee shared her story about living with such titanic talons: how she functioned pretty-much like the average grandma, how she prepared food, washed-up afterwards, typed emails (using really long pencils!) and even how she goes to the bathroom (“Carefully,” she revealed!) Lee also spoke about the inspiring talks that she gave to schools and youth groups in the USA about differences, and how we should celebrate those things that make us different. The one thing that unites us, she’d say, is that we’re all unique, and this needs to be celebrated, not used as means of conflict. We also heard about how she looked after her ailing husband, and how challenging it was to be a carer while facing her own daily struggles with nails that she felt she just couldn’t trim. In the end, fate made the decision for Lee. In early 2009, while a passenger in a vehicle, Lee was involved in a crash that saw all of her nails snapped off. Today, she keeps the nails in a zip -loc bag as a memento of her time as a record-breaker… though she still holds the records to this day for the longest fingernails on a pair of hands (female). It’s always an honour meeting our record-holders, and Lee was no exception – a generous, open and inspiring lady who worked tirelessly as an ambassador for Guinness World Records. Before losing her nails in a traffic accident, Lee got the chance to meet up with her male counterpart Melvin Boothe, whose nails stretched out even further, to an unprecedented 9.05-m. The two instantly hit it off, and Lee was able to share her nail-care tips with Melvin. Their meeting also allowed Guinness World Records to capture some fantastic photography – some of the most striking record-holder images ever captured. Sadly, Melvin passed away not too long after their meeting but, like Lee, remains the "ever" holder in the two-hand fingernails category. 2
‘n Jong man het aansoek gedoen vir ‘n bestuurspos by ‘n groot maatskappy.

Rae Hodge Researchers have unearthed a 150-million-year-old fossilized sea monster called a pliosaur in a cornfield near a village in southern Poland. In a paper published in the journal Proceedings of the Geologists' Association, researchers from the Polish Academy of Sciences describe the titan of the Jurassic period. With jaws up to about 8 feet long and 4.5 times more powerful than those of a Tyrannosaurus rex, the pliosaur could grow to be twice the size of a modern killer whale, weigh dozens of tons and eat any creature in the water. The fossil is about 33 feet long and was surrounded by ancient crocodile teeth and turtle shells and situated in what's believed to have been a tropical archipelago dotted with warm-water lagoons and reservoirs. "This new locality is rich in fossils of coastal and pelagic reptiles," the researchers wrote of the find's site, located in the northeastern part of the Holy Cross Mountains near the village of KrzyĹźanowice.

Ford has created an all-electric Mustang with a six-speed manual gearbox, a true Frankenstein’s monster of a car that I (and I assume many others) want to drive. The sad thing is it’s just a one-off, built for this week’s annual Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) trade show in Las Vegas. Dubbed “Mustang Lithium,” and clad in light gray paint with electric blue details, the car can pull enough energy out of the 800-volt battery to make more than 900 horsepower. Ford unfortunately didn’t share too many other specifications, like range or the size of the battery, since this is just a prototype. It does, however, feature a vertically oriented 10.4-inch touchscreen in the dashboard, a hint of what may be to come in future Ford vehicles.
Manual transmissions aren’t for everyone, but plenty of people still prefer them. Electric vehicles tend to be single-gear affairs, meaning there’s no need for manual or automatic shifting at all. (The new Porsche Taycan is one notable exception, with its two-speed setup.) But that doesn’t mean you can’t design a car that marries the instant torque of electric vehicles with the fun of rolling through a gearbox. SEMA is a place where lots of futuristic prototypes and concepts are born, like last year’s electric Chevy Camaro, or 2015’s Toyota truck limousine. It’s not necessarily a great place to read tea leaves if you’re trying to understand an automaker’s product road map, but it always offers fun prompts for the imagination. With just two weeks to go until Ford unveils its first mass-market EV, a Mustang-inspired SUV codenamed Mach E, it’s easy to let one’s mind wander down the road to a few years from now, when an all-electric Mustang with a manual transmission becomes a quirky, limited-run addition to the Detroit automaker’s multibillion-dollar push into electric vehicles — even if it’s more likely to remain the stuff of dreams.

People often shy away from avocado due to its fat content and high calories—you can get 322 calories and 29 grams of fat from one avocado. But that doesn’t mean don’t deserve a spot in your diet. A 2015 study in the Journal of the American Heart Association says eating one avocado a day can help improve cholesterol in people who are overweight. “Avocados are a source of monounsaturated fats, fiber, and plant sterols,” says Hailey Crean, MS, RD, CDE, CSOWM of Hailey Crean Nutrition. “The plant sterols in have also been shown to have beneficial effects on cholesterol levels by competing with dietary cholesterol for absorption. It is still important to consider one’s overall diet and calorie intake,” Crean warns. She recommends swapping out other sources of saturated fat, like whole milk, cream cheese, butter, and marbled meats, if you’re eating an avocado a day. It may be worth it... 9
Rosie Perper They say a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Not so for Steve Morrow, whose desired purchase of one bird accidentally resulted in ownership of 1,000 hens. Morrow told Insider that he was browsing Trademe.co.nz, New Zealand's largest auction website, when he stumbled upon a post that was for "urgent sale." A screenshot of the ad seen by Insider indicates that the seller was looking to move 1,000 hens from its free-range egg farm in Massey (near Auckland) by Monday as it was closing down and needed to be vacated. "For urgent sale is one 1,000 - bird mixed age flock of Brown Shavers and Highlines," the ad read. But Morrow, who manages a bed and breakfast called Koromatua Homestead in Hamilton, New Zealand, was only looking for "a couple more" hens as he already had 10 on his property that provided eggs for his guests' breakfasts. He said he misread the ad, thinking he could put in a bid and take as many or as few of the hens as he wanted. Morrow initially put in a bit for $NZ10.50 ($6.70) and by Sunday morning he discovered that he had actually won the auction for $NZ1.50 ($0.96). The seller, Matthew Blomfield, later spoke to Morrow and asked him about what he planned to do with 1,000 hens. "I was stunned, shocked, and speechless," Morrow said. Unsure of what to do with his plentiful poultry purchase, Morrow posted on a Facebook message board on Monday urgently asking for help. Within hours, Morrow said he received thousands of replies from people across the country offering to lend a hand in re-homing the birds. "I had to turn my phone off at 1 a.m.," he said. "It was so overwhelming, and I was blown away." The Animal Sanctuary, an animal refuge in Matakana, New Zealand, contacted Morrow and offered to coordinate the rescue of the hens and send them off to their prospective homes. Morrow said that with the help of the sanctuary and his online community, he was able to find homes for all 1,000 birds by 3 p.m. local time on Monday. Morrow said the birds are currently undergoing veterinary treatment and will be ready to be permanently re-homed within the next several weeks. Despite the mix up, Morrow said he was impressed by how positively his community responded to his story. "The whole experience has shown me people in New Zealand are like one big family when it comes to helping those in need," he said. "Now everyone calls me 'the chicken man.'"

Do you think you have it? You’ve most likely had to take a Myers-Briggs Type Indicator test at some point in your life. If you haven’t, here’s a quick summary: The test measures which side you lean more towards in four different areas: Extroversion vs. Introversion, Sensing vs. Intuition, Thinking vs. Feeling, and Judging vs. Perceiving. The Myers-Briggs personality types combine the letters of those traits to create a four-letter sequence, like ENTJ or INTP. (There’s an “N” in some of these Myers-Briggs personality types to represent “Intuition,” because the “I” is already taken by “Introversion.”) After you take the test, don’t be surprised if you’re oddly freaked out by how accurate your results are. If you happened to fall into the INFJ personality type, you’re a rare breed; only 1.5 percent of the general population fits into that category, making it the rarest personality type in the world. When it comes to physical attributes, this is the rarest hair and eye color combination in humans. What does this type mean about you? What are some INFJ personality traits? According to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator test, the INFJ personality is more introverted, intuitive, feeling, and judging. In other words, INFJs are a bit more reserved, but they’re very loyal friends and make strong, empathetic leaders. The rarest personality type is often referred to as the “Counselor” type because of the INFJ personality traits. INFJs are very moral and persistent, and they usually see the glass half full. They prefer to be open with only a select few people and are very good listeners themselves. Their introversion can cause them to be difficult to get to know, as well as reserved with people they don’t know well. If you have any of the Myers-Briggs personality types that start with I, you’ll definitely relate to these funny cartoons for introverts. Who are some INFJ famous people? Well, former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt had the rarest personality type, as does former president Jimmy Carter. Lawyer and activist Mohandas Gandhi was also an INFJ. On the more artistic side of INFJ famous people, you’ll find Wuthering Heights author Emily Brontë, Crime and Punishment author Fyodor Dostoyevsky, and Oscarwinning actress Shirley MacLaine. On the other end of the scale, the most popular personality type is ISFJ. If you’re curious about which of the Myers-Briggs personality types best describes you, take the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator test for yourself. Could you have an INFJ personality? 13

PAW PRINT SALT DOUGH ORNAMENTS INGREDIENTS: • ½ cup hot water • ½ cup salt • 1 cup flour • Acrylic Paint • Matte Finish Mod Podge • Glitter • Ribbon • Gold Paint Pen or Sharpie INSTRUCTIONS: Mix together the hot water, salt and flour. Kneed it together with your hands until it forms a dough ball. If it's too sticky, add some extra flour. Roll out the dough until it is ¼ inch to ½ inch thick. Use small plastic cups to cut out circle shapes. Gently press your dog's paw into the center of the circle to make an imprint. Use a drinking straw to cut a hole for the ribbon. Transfer the circles to a parchment lined baking sheet and bake at 225F for 2 to 3 hours until they are solid and completely dried out. Once they have cooled, paint the ornaments in colours to match your pup's personality. Write your dog's name and the year on the front or back of the ornament using a gold paint pen or Sharpie marker. Add a coat of Matte Finish Mod Podge and sprinkle it generously with glitter. If you only want the imprint filled with glitter, allow the first coat of Mod Podge to dry completely. Then add a generous second coat to the inside of the paw print and sprinkle it generously with glitter. String a ribbon through the hole to hang your ornament. If you want you can attach an extra ribbon or bow tie to the ornament using hot glue. 15

Emily Price When it comes to keeping your home safe, what you have in your front lawn can be what attracts a burglar to break in or what makes them decide to move on instead. Put away your ladder If you have a two-story house, leaving a ladder out can ultimately lead to you giving burglars a way to break into your home, using your own equipment, Tura says. A passerby likely won’t think a person on a ladder in the middle of the day is up to no good, but while you’re away at work that ladder can be used as a tool for burglars to break into your second story. Worse, Tura says home security systems are likely protecting your first story while leaving that second story exposed. If you must leave your ladder out, lock it up to something using a bike lock, he suggests.

SWAKOPMUND Woermann House and Tower Situated in Bismarck Street, this beautiful old building was erected in 1894. During 1903/04 the Woermannhaus was extended and extravagant wood paneled offices were added. The Damara Tower served as a water tower, landmark and navigation point for the ships of the Woermann line. In 1921 the South West Africa Administration bought the Woermannhaus and converted it into a school hostel. It was later restored and transformed into the public library and art centre as today. 18
