RIDE THROUGH THE TREES ON THE WORLD’S LONGEST MAT WATER SLIDE ALL 1,111 M OF IT By Amanda Tang

VIDEO: https://youtu.be/V2E2XYcEijc The joy of a water slide usually ends in less than 30 seconds at a regular water park. However, ESCAPE, an outdoor theme park in Penang, Malaysia, has decided to act and solve this problem. Hidden among a forest hillside in Penang, Malaysia, the longest inner tube / mat water slide zig zags for 1,111 m and lasts for a full three minutes. At ESCAPES’s grand opening on 6 September, the slide was measured from the beginning to the end and verified. ESCAPE believes that there is no age limit to having fun. All of its rides and games are designed for a wide range of age groups and abilities, with an emphasis on self-directed and self-powered play. This water slide has been an idea at the back of its bosses' minds for years. It is only when they started designing the water park in 2015 that this dream could become a reality. However, due to financial constraints, it had to be postponed until 2017. The longest inner tube / mat water slide was built to be the highlight of ESCAPE’s third phase, Gravityplay, where they installed a 420-m-long chair lift to ease the uphill ascent to top of the slide, which is elevated 70 m from the bottom of the hill.

ESCAPE is the fun destination with exciting rides and games hosted in a natural environment. The core element in this project was to protect and care for the environment. Building around a rainforest brought along some major challenges. ESCAPE were unable to use heavy machinery and installed the entire ride manually. The design ensured no trees were cut down in the creation of the water slide. Throughout the design and installation process, they had to make many changes due to the hostile terrain and to meet safety and regulatory compliance in a process that took around eight months. "Guinness World Records helped ESCAPE gain international media coverage and solidified ESCAPE's brand recognition globally. This world record has started attracting increasing numbers of international and domestic tourists to ESCAPE" 2

You can’t talk about fast-food lawsuits without talking about the most infamous of them all: the hot coffee lawsuit. In 1992, 79-year-old Stella Liebeck’s McDonald’s coffee spilled all over her when she was trying to remove the lid. It’s certainly easy to make the “Hot coffee was hot?! No way!” joke when talking about the hot coffee lawsuit, but it was a more serious matter than that criticism suggests. She suffered third-degree burns that required skin grafts, and ended up suing McDonald’s after they neglected to reimburse her $10,000 medical bills. So, despite its notoriety, it really wasn’t that ridiculous.

Weddings tend to make people go a little crazy, but this is next level. In screenshots of an anonymous woman's Facebook posted to Reddit, a bride has announced that she'll be cancelling the wedding...but keeping $30,000 that the family had donated to her. She said, "After much reflection and tear-filled conversation with our closest family members, we have decided to cancel our upcoming winter wedding." She then went on to thank guests for their "generous" donations to the fund of "over $30,000". She adds that guests shouldn't worry, for the money won't be "in vain" – she and the groom will use it towards a honeymoon. If that wasn't ridiculous enough, she went on to say that after they regain financial stability and "hold calm in our hearts", they will announce a new date and reopen their fund, she then added that she'd be updating the gift fund registry for something to take on honeymoon. But that guest shouldn't worry – the new wedding is going to be a HIT. The post is wildly scammy, and commenters on Facebook were not thrilled. A family member went all in with, "is this a joke?" while another accused "Pam" of day drinking. Bizarrely, the wife claimed that as they had chosen and consented to donate money, they had no say in how it was spent. The users responding on Reddit were similarly appalled, with one saying, "I’m actually speechless. Spending 30k on a honeymoon for a wedding that got cancelled? Wooooow". Another said, "The way I read the "financial stability" was that they're not financial stable now, and won't be after the honeymoon. "That $30K, oh that's for me to spend on myself as I want, including my honeymoon, no I won't be putting it towards making us financially stable. I expect you to donate more money to me for that!" One thing everyone can agree on...the couple seem pretty deluded. 7

In Europe, government agencies and independent agencies rate hotels on the five-star system. Countries like Spain and Italy have government laws in place defining each star rating. American ratings are less cut and dry. Hotels get their stars from some independent organizations like AAA, as well as magazines, websites, and travel blogs. Most places include a guide or basis for their ratings. However, there isn’t one standard or required organization that gives hotels stars in the United States. Interestingly, though, the system is actually thanks to an American oil and gas company: Mobil. The gas station chain had travel guides in stations and is responsible for starting the five-star hotel rating trend that people now use to rate everything from movies to restaurants. Hotels usually display their star status.

DVD sales have been on the decline for over a decade, but a slew of new streaming services and a shift in how consumers are watching movies and TV shows could be the final death knell for the technology. The same can be said for Blu-Ray discs. At its peak, DVD sales reached $16.3 billion and were 64% of the U.S. home video market. That was 2005. These days, DVD sales account for less than 10% of the total market, with total sales hitting $2.2 billion in 2018. Blu-Ray discs, which have always been slightly more expensive than DVDs, launched in 2006. At most, Blu-Ray sales reached $2.37 billion in 2013, before falling to $1.8 billion in 2018. It's likely that Blu-Ray sales fractionally impacted the decline of DVD sales, but the fact that DVD sales still outpace Blu-Ray sales shows it's not the real culprit. Instead, a combination of the Great Recession, a rise in customers buying on-demand and digital copies of films and the launch of streaming services is what has caused DVD sales to decline more than 86% in the last 13 years. And that decline could get worse as more streaming services enter the market. Disney+, Peacock and HBO Max are all arriving within the next year. Apple TV+ rolled out on Nov. 1, and Disney+ arrives Tuesday. Leading up to the economic downturn, there was a big boom in DVD sales. Between 2001 and 2005 customers had transitioned away from VHS and were buying up not only new films as they came out, but older films that were being released on DVD. However, once customers had bought the DVD versions of those library films, their DVD spending started to decrease. So after hitting a high of $16.3 billion in DVD sales in 2005, there was a 3% drop in 2006. But, in 2007, DVD sales actually rose about half a percent. The real inflection point was the Great Recession. From 2007 to 2008, DVD sales slumped 26%, falling to $11.6 billion from $15.7 billion. Bruce Nash, founder and president of Nash Information Services, said consumers ditched DVD spending as their disposable income shriveled, kicking off the demise of the DVD industry. The U.S. home video market also slumped during the same period. After hitting a high of $25.2 billion in 2005, by the end of 2008, total sales of DVDs, Blu-Rays, on-demand video and digital had fallen 28% to $17.9 billion. The DVD sales decline was compounded in the years after the economy had recovered because of the rise of video on-demand — renting and buying movies through cable subscriptions — and digital downloads began to grow in popularity. Consumers could rent movies for as low as 99 cents and buy a movie outright for around $10. For comparison, DVD prices were around $20 and Blu-Rays were closer to $25. Many had adopted digital film purchases during the economic downturn because it was a cheaper option. "What we've seen is that the digital market is very different from physical market," Michael Smith, professor of information technology and marketing at Heinz College and Tepper School of Business, said. "And when someone moves from physical market to digital market, they move across all platforms. Once they go digital, they don't go back to DVD." And as customers were transitioning to digital, streaming services also arrived on the scene. (Data on the subscription service model is only available starting in 2011.) "The big fundamental shift here is that when you look at a film you want to watch, and maybe you missed it in theaters, 10 to 15 years ago, you can buy the DVD or rent from Blockbuster," Nash said. "Now, I've got HBO and [the film is] going to be on HBO in a couple months. It's not worth buying the DVD to watch it. I'll just wait a bit." Since 2011, platforms like Netflix, Hulu and HBO have seen sales balloon 1,231% to $12.9 billion. In the meantime, DVD sales continued to slip, falling more than 67% between 2011 and 2018. With the help of streaming services, the home video market has also been revived. In 2018, the U.S. market reached $23.2 billion. 13

Did you know that quick steaming is the best way to retain the nutrients in broccoli (such as vitamin C and sulforaphane), than eating it boiled or raw? So steam it for just about five minutes, before throwing it in your favourite salad. 14

A group of youths in Andhra Pradesh came up with a unique idea to encourage people to part with their non-biodegradable waste. A group of youths from Peddapuram town in Andhra Pradesh’s East Godavari district launched a social media group called 'Mana Peddapuram' (Our Peddapuram), a few years ago. The idea was to discuss issues affecting the town and act upon them. A few months ago, Naresh Pedireddi, who has been behind the group came up with the concept of ‘rice-for-plastic’. The idea behind the exchange was to encourage people to part with their non-biodegradable waste in large numbers. “The slogan we promoted was ‘Avoid Plastic - Avoid Hunger’. We wanted to get rid of plastic and also feed the hungry," says Pedireddi, a Peddapuram-based entrepreneur. The programme was launched on Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary on 2 October. Within days, the group was able to collect around 400 kgs of plastic and an equal amount of rice and other materials were distributed during the drive. Now they plan to do it every Sunday. The plastic that was collected was deposited at the local municipality office. “They promised that it will be recycled,” says Pedireddi. For a town of around 70,000 people, the amount of plastic they collected through these drives is just a drop in the ocean. But the group says that they will continue to raise awareness among the residents of the town. "The most satisfying thing about this drive has been that it has inspired people in other towns of the district to launch such initiatives," says Pedireddi. The Mana Peddapuram, besides raising civic issues like cleanliness, deforestation, and cultural events, has also run campaigns spreading awareness on blood donation and the pledging of organs. The group claims that funds are not a problem as the people in Peddapuram are generous when it comes to donating money for worthy causes. “We have hundreds of young people in this group and we hope to take up many more issues in the coming months and years,” says Pedireddi. We can only hope for many more such enthusiastic youth organizations that work for nation-building. 15

Accurately known as ‘airplane plant’, it eliminates carbon monoxide, formaldehyde and xylene from the air. It's a low-maintenance plant, and doesn’t demand a lot of air or light. What’s more, it doesn’t need to be watered more than two-three times a week. Place it in hanging baskets around your workspace or living area and stay pollution-free. Another plus, they are completely non-toxic and safe for your pets. 17

“The secret to understanding dog behavior is that the average dog has a mind that’s equivalent to a human two- to two-andhalf-year-old,” says Stanley Coren, PhD, a professor emeritus in the psychology department at the University of British Columbia. Dogs can understand about 165 words, meaning they follow more of what you’re saying than just “walk,” “treat,” and “Ginger,” but they are most likely to learn single vocabulary words that have concrete objects or activities associated with them. 20
