Of julle dan eet of drink of enigiets doen, doen alles tot verheerliking van God. 1 Korintiërs 10:31
We're honestly not sure whether the interior or exterior of this building is cooler. BY MEGHAN JONES At first glance, what kind of building do you think this is? A museum? A stadium or arena? Or even just a cool art installation? Well, it’s none of those things—it’s a library. And a massive one, at that. It’s the National Library of Belarus, located in the Eastern European city of Minsk. Since it was built in 2006, the gigantic orb-shaped structure has become a major tourist attraction, and we can see why! For one thing, its very shape is unique and impressive. The library was designed by Mihail Vinogradov and Viktor Kramarenko, architects who wanted it to resemble a “Belarusian diamond.” The diamond, they said, was meant to symbolize the immense value of knowledge. The design took 13 years to be approved… but we think it was worth the wait! The technical name of this shape is a “rhombicuboctahedron”—it has 18 square faces and eight triangular ones. And each of those 26 faces is covered with miniature color-changing lights. Every night, the building lights up and puts on a dazzling show. And that’s just the outside! The main entrance to the library, is designed to look like an open book, and visitors walk through it to find themselves in a book lover’s paradise. The enormous structure is 236 feet tall, with each of its 22 different levels chock-full of reading material. As if that weren’t enough, the orb also contains massive conference rooms big enough to hold over 400 people. Oh yeah, and it holds a grand total of 8.6 million items, in many different languages and media formats, from books to CDs to sheet music. Finally, the library has both an inside and an open-air observation deck, where visitors can look out at the rest of Minsk. The library itself is surrounded by a picturesque park by a river. However pretty the park is, though, we think the people outside the library have a better view! 2
Karmann Gia Coupe…… Nou jy bliek, nou ek is siek". Ons het so ly en bliek deur 2017 gegaan. Mag dit vir almal in 2018 beter gaan. Kyk, die Here Jesus staan by die deur en klop. Gooi die brieke los en volg Hom. Seën en liefde van huis tot huis. Rika Etsebeth de Villiers 3

Yes, you can blame Rome (and London) for the random number BY SAM BENSON SMITH
Nearly every country in the world uses the metric system as its official system of weights and measurements. Yes, we are among the exceptions to this rule, but there’s no use crying over a spilt liter of milk. The customary system has its own cool history, well, one unit of the customary system does: the mile. According to Mental Floss, the modern mile has origins in Roman antiquity. The term “mile” is derived from the Latin mille passum, meaning “a thousand paces.” A pace, in Roman times, was equivalent in length to five human feet lined up from toe to heel. Romans happened to be a bit smaller than modern humans, so 5,000 Roman “feet” would equate to about 4,850 modern human “feet.” That means the entire road system of the Roman empire (over 250,000 miles of roads) consists of over 1.25 billion “feet.” While the basis of this measurement was Roman, the jump of 280 feet was positively British. In 1592, Parliament wanted to standardize the measurement of the mile and made the decision that it should be equal to eight furlongs. Furlongs, which are still used as a unit of measurement in horse racing, are 660 feet long. 660 times eight equals, you guessed it, 5,280. Without Romans, there would be no name nor baseline for the mile.

Hmmm, there's something different about those famous arches BY MEGHAN JONES
The bright yellow letter M for McDonald’s has to be one of the most recognizable logos in the entire world. It adorns McDonald’s restaurants across the globe, to the point where “The Golden Arches” has become all but synonymous with McDonald’s itself. However, there’s one McDonald’s that forgoes that famous yellow color in its logo in favor of a light bluish-green. In Sedona, Arizona, the only arches you’ll see are turquoise! Don’t worry, there’s a reason for the color change—and it’s pretty funny. The city of Sedona, located in the center of Arizona, is famous for its stunning natural beauty—namely, its mountainous landscape of red rock. Because of said landscape, there are rules in place for buildings in Sedona, to make sure that no structure intrudes too much on the surrounding natural scenery. When the McDonald’s was built there in 1993, city officials believed that a bright yellow M would do just that. They claimed that gold would clash with the surrounding red rocks, and opted for a more pleasing, soft blue. You read that right—the arches are blue because gold didn’t match the city’s (natural) decor. Whatever the reason, though, the color-change certainly makes this McDonald’s stand out. In fact, these unique not-so-golden arches have become an essential tourist destination for Sedona travelers. In every way besides the giant M, though, this McDonald’s is just like any other— full of guilty-pleasure burgers, Happy Meals, and addictive fries.

I grew up on a 50-acre farm in the small rural community of Catawissa, Missouri, as the sixth of seven children. My parents often noted during meals how everything on the table except the sugar and flour came from the land. Besides running the farm, Dad was also a carpenter. In the fall of 1970, he was working on a house when the ladder broke. His back was fractured in two places. He stayed in the hospital for three weeks with his head and feet down, permitting his back to align correctly so the bones would fuse. On Thanksgiving, Dad was still in the hospital. We always butchered hogs the day after the holiday, and that year my uncle showed up with a couple of cousins to help my three older brothers prepare our year’s supply of pork. After Dad returned home, he was in a back brace and unable to work. I was too young to realize our family had no money coming in as Christmas approached. One night we heard a car coming up the long driveway. Always alert to company, we kids were curious about who was visiting. Peggy Phelan was at the door, holding an envelope stuffed with money. She told my dad she had collected money in the community and was there to deliver it. He tried to protest but Peggy would have none of it. I can still hear her saying, “Archie, whenever someone’s baler is broke, you bale their hay. Someone passes away, Altha is cooking. It’s our turn.” That evening, this 6-year-old understood what being a good neighbor was, and that because her parents were good neighbors, their kindness would be returned. These tales of Christmas kindness will warm your heart, too. I learned later that my mom’s sisters all “adopted” one of us kids to help with Christmas, and we received gift baskets from more than one organization. My parents were used to being the givers and not the receivers of such generosity. They had a bit of pride to swallow, but continued all of their lives to show us kids the value of kindness.

A BENEFIT OF BANANA PEELS Warts are small fleshy growths on the skin caused by a common virus, and usually show up on the hands, feet, face, and neck. Though common and treatable, warts can be annoying, embarrassing, and sometimes even uncomfortable. The high concentration of potassium found naturally in banana peels is no match for warts–even plantar warts. If you or your child has a wart, gently rub it with the inside of a banana peel for 1-2 minutes a day. The wart should be greatly diminished or gone altogether within about 2 weeks.
