Want elke huis word deur iemand gebou, maar hy wat alle dinge gebou het, is God Heb. 3:4
She was the only one who could fit through the septic tank's small hole. Without hesitation, she went in to save a two-year-old's life. BY ANDY SIMMONS Madison Williams was studying in her bedroom in Dublin, Ohio, in August 2016 when the door burst open. It was her mother, Leigh Williams, with a horrific and incredible story: “A little boy fell into a septic tank, and no one can reach him.” Then she made this request of her 13-year-old daughter: “Can you help?” Madison and Leigh ran to a neighbor’s yard, where they found the boy’s distraught mother and other frantic adults surrounding a septic tank opening that protruded a few inches above the neatly trimmed lawn. It was 11 inches in diameter—slightly wider than a basket-ball—with a hatch that had not been secured. The boy, who was only two years old, had slipped in and was drowning in four feet of sewage inside a tank that was eight feet deep. The men and women—who minutes earlier had been enjoying a party in a nearby home when they heard the boy’s mother scream—were dropping extension cords into the sludge, hoping the child would grab hold so they could pull him out. Madison quickly surveyed the situation. She was the only one who could fit through the small hole. Without hesitation, she got on her stomach next to the opening, placed her arms out in front of her, and told the adults, “Lower me in.” Leigh and others held her waist and legs. “I wiggled my arms and shoulders until I got through the opening,” Madison says. Inside, the tank was dark, and the air putrid. Madison thrust her arms into the muck. In the process, she jammed her left wrist against a concealed pole, injuring the muscles in her wrist and arm so severely that the hand was rendered useless. Rather than tend to her injury, Madison skimmed the surface of the sewage, hoping to feel the submerged boy. “Every once in a while, I’d see his little toes pop out of the water,” she says. “Then I would try to grab them.” Minutes ticked by before she saw the faint outline of his foot again. Madison shot her good hand out and grasped the foot tightly. “Pull me up!” she shouted to the others above. As they were pulled to the surface, the boy’s free foot got stuck under the inside lip of the hatch. “Lower me down!” she yelled. “I had to wiggle his foot until it was free.” Then, ten minutes after Madison had entered the tank, she and the boy were lifted out. But the toddler wasn’t out of trouble. He had been deprived of oxygen long enough that he wasn’t breathing. He was placed on his side, and an adult gave him several hard whacks on the back, one right after the other, until the boy coughed up fluids. It was only when Madison heard him cry that she knew he was all right. It took Madison longer to recover than the boy, who was taken to the hospital and released that same night. She, however, endured months of physical therapy for her wrist, which, says neighbor Mary Holley, made the girl’s actions all the more impressive. “Madison’s a hero,” Holley says. “What other teenage girl is going to voluntarily go into a septic tank?” 2
"Jy is so lelik, as jy die yskas oopmaak klim die koei van die melkboks af!" Ek is stom. Kyk rond, kyk deeglik, wees waaksaam, Ons Koning is oppad. Liefde van huis tot huis. x 3
There's a fine line between selling yourself too hard and not hard enough. We asked career experts the best way to approach this difficult question. BY RACHEL SOKOL
When interviewing for a new job, you should always be prepared to answer any question tossed at you, from, “Are you a team player?” to, “How much experience do you have?” When responding, be sure to avoid the one word you should never say in an interview. But no matter how prepared you may be for an interview—be it in person, via phone, or even Skype—the one question that can be a stumper is: “Why should I hire you?” While you may instinctively want to blurt, “Because I’m awesome,” that’s not exactly what the interviewer wants to hear; we’ve rounded up some expert advice on how to stay cool while answering this question—and other tough interview questions. REMAIN HUMBLE “The best answer to this question should include a combination of enthusiasm, confidence, and humility,” says SiriusXM interviewer and broadcaster Ken Coleman. “If you are applying for a job in which you can use your top talents to perform the work you love to do and produce results that matter to you, then smile big, and with enthusiasm reply, “This is what I want to do and where I want to be. I have the talent to execute this role and the passion to maximize this role for the team and the organization.” IMAGINE YOU’RE THE INTERVIEWER According to career coach Elana Konstant, think about this question from the employer’s perspective. “What does your interviewer need to hear to recognize that you are the right candidate? Rather than focusing on what you want to get across, focus on what is affecting the employer—company challenges, upcoming projects, industry changes, and so forth.” Remember, adds Konstant, the interviewer wants to determine if you are a good fit for the role and the company as a whole. Research the company, so you can learn as much as you can about its culture before interviewing. Also, practice your response out loud and frequently with friends and family—especially the morning of the interview. PREPARE TALKING POINTS Monster career expert Vicki Salemi says to prepare talking points. “You need to convey you have the skills and experience to ace the role, speak with enthusiasm, and passion and then bring it back to the employer.” Salemi advises job seekers to “mention you know they’re looking for a detail-oriented manager who’s a great self-starter, for example, and that their initiative is green and that aligns with your values.” Also, don’t be shy about your passion for the opportunity. “When I worked in corporate recruiting and candidates were nearly identical on paper, decisions boiled down to soft skills and who the hiring team liked better,” recalls Salemi. “I heard hiring managers say, ‘They had a hunger in their eyes,’ or ‘fire in their belly.'” IT’S OK TO BRAG A LITTLE Don’t be too shy, says Salemi: It’s an interview, they expect you to brag some. “You can say something like, ‘You should hire me because I’m an excellent performer and excel in the skill set required for this position. I’ve done XYZ in my current role and have valuable experiences already…,’ and then go into why you’re a fit for them. Make it easy for them to connect the dots so by the end of this answer they’re thinking, ‘This sounds pretty convincing!'”

Hint: it has to do more with the moms than the babies. BY MEGHAN JONES
It makes sense that late summer is the most popular time of year for births; lots of babies are conceived around Christmastime. But is there a certain time of day when most babies make their grand entrance to the world? Scientific American, the Centers for Disease Control, and Prevention teamed up for a study showing the most popular times of day for births. The data reveals that more babies are born at 8 o’clock in the morning than at any other time. According to the CDC’s diagram showing the number of babies born by minute, there is a major peak at 8 a.m., with a smaller peak between noon and 1 p.m. So what’s the reason for this morning baby boom? No, it’s not because the new babies want to make the most of their first-ever birthday. It’s because 8 a.m. is the time many mothers choose to have their babies. According to Scientific American, over 98 percent of babies in the United States are born in hospitals. And while doctors “can’t schedule spontaneous labor,” more and more births are being planned. Only about 50 percent of births are vaginal or “natural,” while 32 percent are Csections and 18 percent are induced. These “scheduled births,” C-sections in particular, are the big reason so many babies are born in the morning. The mothers’ and doctors’ decisions combine to make 8 a.m. the most popular birth time. These birth peaks, however, only occur on weekdays, mainly because of the hospitals’ workweek schedules. Monday is the day with the most 8 a.m. births, but every weekday sees a significant surge in births at 8 a.m. When it comes to natural births, however, there’s no primary time for babies to be born; the diagram only shows a night-and-day-related pattern. Twenty to 30 percent more babies are born naturally between 6:45 am and 6 p.m. than during the night. But there’s no peak like there is for C-section births. The majority of 8 a.m. surgical births are still enough to make that time the overall biggest birth time.

With public interest in the damage caused by discarded plastic ramping up all over the world, Mumbai -based company, Plastindia Foundation, and its partners wanted to organise a campaign that would demonstrate the value of recycling on a big scale. They decided a record attempt was the best way to promote their message and opted to challenge the Largest T-shirt title, making the entire item out of plastic waste. The Indian company sourced 200,000 used PET bottles then crushed, recycled and processed them into fibre to create a whopping 4,000 kg of cloth. 15 talented tailors from the International Knitwear Company along with 60 volunteers took on the job of sewing the material into a supersized T-shirt. The Guinness World Records guidelines for this attempt state that the item must be to-scale so that, in theory, a giant human could wear it. It took the team 45 days to complete, stitching different parts of the T-shirt in various warehouses across nearby towns where there was enough space to lay the cloth out. Once it was finished, the green and white top was transported to the cricket ground at Goregaon Sports Club in Mumbai, where 120 volunteers spent three days laying it out and making the final touches. Official Guinness World Records adjudicator Swapnil Dangarikar was invited along to measure the T-shirt, with the help of a professional surveyor. Hundreds of guests watched the process with baited breath, but finally Swapnil was able to confirm that the T-shirt was a staggering 96.86 m long and 69.77 m wide, successfully breaking the record. Prior to this, the title was held by Equilibrios Camisetas Promocionais who constructed a 93.2 m long and 62.73 m wide top in Brazil. After the record was confirmed and photos taken, the record-breaking tee was taken away to be turned into 10,000 normal sized shirts and distributed to disadvantaged children around the local area. "Guinness World Records has given us the opportunity to showcase how the act of throwing away waste separately and correctly can result in a marvel, which will not only contribute to protecting our planet but will also enable hundreds of those who are deprived of basic human needs to have one moment of signi-ficant happiness. For us, that’s the most amazing record. Thank you Guinness World Records for taking our vision to the world," - Atul Kanuga, Chairman of the Environment and Plastics Image Committee at Plastindia Foundation. Mr Kanuga dedicated the title to those who "believe there is hope for our planet".

When flight attendants see passengers walking around without their shoes on, they cringe BY MORGAN CUTOLO
Flight attendants have seen everything while flying—seriously, these are the secrets they aren’t telling you. So when something grosses them out (e.g. passengers walking around the plane without their shoes on) take it from them—you really shouldn’t do it. Airplane bathrooms might seem like they’re clean, but they’re actually pretty unsanitary. In between flights, the bathrooms are only given a quick spray of disinfectant, a wipe down, and then restocked with toilet paper. And we hate to break it to you, but that liquid you see on the floor most likely isn’t water, so you should really be wearing your shoes. The bathroom isn’t the only reason you should keep your shoes on, on a flight. When a passenger gets sick on a plane, the carpet is only spot cleaned. A cleaning crew will take care of those gross spots, but they won’t clean the whole area where germs could have spread. We know it’s tempting to kick off your shoes and relax on a flight but it’s best to keep them on. You’ll be a lot cleaner and the people sitting around you will most likely thank you for it, too. 8

And you thought 2017 was a long year. BY JULIANA LABIANCA
In 1972, Richard Nixon was president, Eugene Cernan became the last man to walk on the moon, and The Godfather won the Academy Award for Best Picture. But perhaps most notably, 1972 was the longest year in the history of recorded time, outlasting other years by a whopping two seconds. So how’d that happen? To start, 1972 was a leap year, meaning it already had an extra 24 hours than most years. But on top of that, it also included two leap seconds: one added to the clock on June 30 and another added before 7 p.m. EST on December 31. Timekeepers around the world honored the leap seconds, and took action to adjust their clocks as part of an international agreement, as reported by the New York Times. The reason for leap seconds is similar to the reason for leap years: they make it possible to align astronomical time, which is determined by Earth’s irregular rotation, with Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). Since the system was implemented in 1972, 27 leap seconds have been applied, the most recent on December 31, 2016. For an example of how leap seconds are inserted, here’s what time looked like that New Year’s Eve: 2016 December 31, 23h 59m 59s 2016 December 31, 23h 59m 60s 2017 January 1, 0h 0m 0s …instead of: 2016 December 31, 23h 59m 59s 2017 January 1, 0h 0m 0s Currently, each leap second is usually announced about six months in advance by the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service, which means you’ll have ample time to decide how to spend your extra second.
