By Mindy Weisberger "Flippy" the robot has learned the hard way that your co-workers can make or break you The burger-flipping robotic fry cook has been temporarily "retired." Why? Because the robot's human colleagues couldn't keep up with it. Built by Miso Robotics, Flippy, described on the company's website as "the world's first autonomous robotic kitchen assistant," was touted as a high-tech helper for fast-food restaurant kitchens in a statement announcing its unveiling in 2017. Equipped with a spatula-tipped arm, Flippy was built to operate alongside human workers and to increase efficiency in cooking and grill maintenance. But poor Flippy faced unexpected challenges in meeting the demands of hungry restaurant patrons, and was relieved of his responsibilities after only two days on the job. But it wasn't Flippy's fault. Rather, the robot's human co-workers weren't able to assemble the burgers as quickly as Flippy could grill the patties, USA Today reported. Flippy joined the staff working the grill at a CaliBurger restaurant in Pasadena, California, on March 5, where he was tasked with flipping burgers and scooping them off the grill once they were fully cooked, Miso Robotics representatives announced in a statement released that day. The robotic fry cook combined a jointed arm — capable of wielding a spatula or a grill scraper — with cloud-based artificial intelligence (AI) and thermal vision that enabled it to tell whether a burger was raw or well-done. To ensure that all burgers were thoroughly cooked, Flippy would monitor each patty in real time, using a display screen readout to inform its human co-workers when a burger is ready for dressings and a bun. Flippy wasn't intended to replace people but rather to serve as "extra hands" at the grill, Miso Robotics representatives said in the statement. CaliBurger prepared for Flippy's debut with a special cooking area designated as the robot's kitchen domain, including a sign that read "Flippy's Corner." But Flippy's introduction did not go as smoothly as planned, as there were not enough people working behind the counter to dress the finished burgers at the pace Flippy could make them, a CaliBurger representative told USA Today. Miso Robotics announced in 2017 that autonomous burger-makers like Flippy would be installed in more than 50 CaliBurger locations around the world by the end of 2019. But for now, the one location willing to take a chance on a robot fry cook has temporarily turned off its spotlight. The Pasadena CaliBurger's website still urges customers to "Come see Flippy in action," though Flippy's schedule has been amended to read "to be announced." 2

BY MORGAN CUTOLO A lot of people love it, but they don’t realize how harmful it can be for their health
Admit it: you absolutely love the smell of your new car as you’re driving off the lot. Scientists haven’t figured out why everyone loves the smell of a new car so much—maybe it’s because people associate the smell with the luxury of having purchased a new set of wheels. But the smell that comes along with your new ride is actually really toxic and can be harmful to your health. Robert Weitz, a certified microbial investigator and founder of RTK Environmental Group, says that the new car scent you’re smelling is actually made up of something called volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. The new car smell occurs when the various materials that make up your car “outgas” and release VOCs. The materials used in the interior of a new car include polyurethane or polyester and various paints, plastics, and sealants. The VOC molecules released from these materials do eventually evaporate, but in the beginning, they are very harmful to humans, especially in a confined space. “There are many VOCs that cause cancer (carcinogens) and most will produce symptoms in many individuals including respiratory, headaches, and joint and muscle pain. We are all built differently and the VOCs have different effects on all of us,” says Weitz. As the new car smell fades over time, so do the VOCs—but on warm days, the materials can start to “outgas” again. One way to combat the issue is to keep your windows open when you can and don’t inhale as deeply every time you get into your new car. 4
They’re legumes. According to Merriam-Webster, a nut is only a nut if it’s “a hard-shelled dry fruit or seed with a separable rind or shell and interior kernel.” That means walnuts, almonds, cashews, and pistachios aren’t nuts either. They’re seeds.

BY MEGHAN JONES There are a few reasons this number gets such a bad rap
There are plenty of common fears that, even if we don’t have them ourselves, we totally understand: spiders, heights, creepy clowns. And then there’s the number 13. It’s a number just like any other, and yet there are horror movies about it; some buildings intentionally have no 13th floor; and plenty of couples avoid getting married on the 13th of the month. The technical name for the fear of 13 is triskaidekaphobia, and while it is rare, about 9 to 10 percent of Americans are, at the very least, uneasy about the number 13. What makes this number so scary? Well, there’s no single reason behind the widespread fear. Historians have pinpointed a few potential reasons for 13’s prevalence as an unlucky number. The most popular theory about the origin of this fear is biblical: there were 13 diners at the Last Supper. The 13th to arrive was Judas, who betrayed Jesus. In Norse mythology, too, a table of 13 proved unlucky, to say the least. According to one of the myths, the primary 12 gods were dining together peacefully until the god of mischief (and frequent superhero-movie villain) Loki showed up. As soon as this 13th guest arrived, chaos and carnage ensued. The superstition that a table of 13 diners spells bad news even made its way into Harry Potter. On its own, there are no problems with the number itself. It’s 13’s proximity to the number 12 that makes it look bad, according to scientists and mathematicians. In many ancient cultures, 12 was considered to be a perfect number. Civilizations as far back as ancient Sumer based their systems of telling time around the number 12. There are 12 hours on a clock, 12 months in a year, and 12 phases of the Zodiac. Twelve is also the largest number that also has one syllable (in English, at least). As the number immediately following this “perfect” one, 13 seemed flawed, inspiring unease throughout the ancient world. So factors from both myth and math have combined to make this particular number more maligned than any other. The uneasiness about the number, dating back to ancient times, has been compounded over the years to create a very real, modern fear. 6

Irishwoman Sinead Kane has just achieved her second Guinness World Records title, after running a staggering 130.50 km – around the equivalent of three marathons – on a treadmill. The 35-year-old athlete broke the previous record for the Greatest distance run on a treadmill in 12 hours (female) by 1.88 km. Sinead is legally blind as she only has 5% vision. She has a form of visual impairment called snow blindness – she was born without irises so her eyes let in too much light – which means she sees whiteness rather than darkness. She wanted to attempt this record to challenge preconceptions about disabilities. The attempt took place in The Clayton Hotel Gym, with her ultra-runner coach John O’Regan there to cheer her on. John has been working with Sinead for years and was the person who encouraged her to go for this tough endurance challenge. Guinness World Records adjudicator Jack Brockbank was on hand to officiate the attempt and members of Allianz Ireland were also there, as Sinead is working with the car insurance company on an advertising campaign. In 2017, Sinead became the first blind female to complete a marathon on each continent, after completing seven marathons on seven continents, within seven days. The first of these marathons was Antarctica and the feat came to an end 6 days 9 hours and 25 minutes later in Sydney, Australia. As well as being a two-time Guinness World Records title holder, the inspirational woman can also boast two PhD doctorates, she is a certified mediator, writer with the Irish Criminal Law Journal, qualified solicitor and motivational speaker. 7
