By Guinness World Records Published 11 May 2018 On 9 July 2016, Staffordshire-born strongman Eddie Hall made history after becoming the first person to complete a half ton deadlift at the World Deadlift Championships in Leeds, UK. Beating the previous 463 kg record, the reigning World's Strongest Man champion raised the Heaviest Strongman deadlift to an unprecedented 500 kg. He describes it as "the most incredible lift in human history and one of the most dangerous things I’ve ever done." We recently caught up with the 30-year-old to find out how he trained for this seemingly-impossible feat of strength. "It’s a full-time job," says Eddie. "It takes a whole combination of things to get this right." His daily training schedule includes: 1 hr 30 min of physio 1 hr 30 min of hot/cold treatment 1 hr 30 min of stretching 3-4 hr weight training 1 hr of cardio However, it’s not all about putting time in at the gym – Eddie has to consume a staggering 12,500 calories per day in the lead up to a contest. That's 10 times more food than the average man is recommended to eat in one day! To maintain and build his strength he has to eat every two hours, even during the night. “You’ve got to be constantly grazing like a cow” says Eddie. His daily diet looks like this: 3am: Raw steaks and protein shakes 7am: Full English breakfast 10am: Second breakfast – fruit, beef jerky Midday snacks: 150 g cashew nuts, litres of cranberry juice, milk, protein shakes Lunch: Steak and chips, salmon and pasta or chicken and pasta/rice Dessert: Half a family cheesecake Second lunch 3pm: Tuna sandwiches, flapjacks, five or six portions of fruit, Lucozade, cranberry juice During training: Cranberry juice, litre protein shakes with full fat milk, coconut water Dinner: Curry, spaghetti bolognaise or steak and chips Dessert: The other half of the cheesecake Snacks: Protein bar, beef jerky In bed: Protein bars, beef jerky, raw steak This intense meal plan sets him back £250 a week! “It’s relentless. You’ve got to be obsessed to be the best in the world at strongman…. Or anything.” Now that Eddie Hall has achieved his goals of achieving a Guinness World Records title and winning the World’s Strongest Man competition, he plans to cut back on weightlifting competitions because he is concerned about his health. His weight peaked at a whopping 32 stone - he couldn’t fit in cars and struggled to get out of bed - and it was starting to take its toll on him. His new ambition is to launch a career in film and he has already started channeling his record-breaking determination into acting lessons. 2
Hy kyk my in my oë. “Taxi… Taxi…
If ever there was a symbol for summer that transcended the sun, it has to be the strawberry. Within the strawberry, we can find all the condensed goodness of hot summer days, cool summer nights, and adventures that will never fade from our memories. The best strawberries are those that are fresh picked while still warm from the heat of the summer sun, and Pick Strawberries Day encourages us to get out there and pick our fill! History of Pick Strawberries Day First, let’s talk about the origin of the strawberry. These beautiful red jewels dangling from their green vines seem just a bit too perfect to have been the pure manufacture of Mother Nature, so where did they come from? Well, as it turns out they did, in fact, come from Mother Nature in forms largely similar to those we grow in our gardens today. Strawberries have had a reputation not just for being delicious, but also for having astounding medicinal properties, at least according to 16th-century pharmacists. But the origin of the berry as we know it comes from Brittany, France, where it was first cultivated in a garden in the 1750’s, as a blend of two other forms of wild strawberry. Long before this, however, they had begun cultivating them in their gardens from the wild, as early as the 14th century. They’ve been with us ever since as a popular dessert and food item, and are grown in the thousands all over the world. Pick Strawberries Day encourages you to get out and experience the wonders of picking strawberries first hand, and there are local u-pick strawberry fields that spring up anywhere strawberries are grown. How To Celebrate Pick Strawberries Day First off, get out there and pick some strawberries! U-Pick strawberry fields are in full swing during this holiday, and if you’re growing them in your backyard then it’s likely time to do at least one of the many harvests of the year. Once you’ve gotten yourself a bounty of strawberries, it’s time to have strawberry shortcake! Simply slice up your strawberries and sprinkle them with sugar, and put them in the fridge for a couple hours. While you’re waiting, prepare a yellow pound cake and get it to baking. Once it’s out, simply take a slice of cake, cover it with strawberries, and then add a dollop of whipped cream and vanilla ice cream! It’s the absolute best of summer right there on your plate. Don’t let Pick Strawberries Day go by without gathering your own! 4
They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and to the curators at the Museum of Bad Art, none of these pieces are beautiful. They’re either bad pieces made by otherwise talented artists, or bad pieces made by exceptionally untalented artists. The collection includes portraits, landscapes, and still life pieces. This one, for example, is "Mana Lisa" by Andrea Schmidt of Vancouver, Canada. You can see most of the collection online, but there are also three permanent galleries in the Massachusetts area.

Say goodbye to tediously peeling clove after clove of garlic. You can microwave a whole head of garlic for about 20 seconds and the cloves will slip out of their peels effortlessly, without the garlicscented fingers.

Way back in 1863, this was one of the first royal weddings ever to be photographed. Queen Victoria's eldest son, Albert Edward the Prince of Wales, married Princess Alexandra of Denmark on March 10. The wedding took place at St. George's Cha-pel in Windsor. At the time, Queen Victoria was mourning her husband, Prince Albert, who had passed away in 1861. She wore black to the ceremony and stood above the proceedings on a balcony rather than taking part in the procession. Prince Albert Edward would become King Edward VII in 1901. Here, his wife Princess Alexandra poses in her beautiful English silk gown.

A Hong Kong-based diamond jewellery brand has used a show in Switzerland to show off the Most diamonds set on a handbag with nearly 10,000 embedded in a Coca-Colainspired accessory. This Coca-Cola bottle-shaped diamond handbag contains 9,888 pieces of natural diamonds, weighing 120 karats, and took 15 highly skilled craftsmen nearly 100 days to complete, showca-sing the utmost creativity and extravagance. The bag holds 8,543 black diamonds and 1,345 colourless diamonds.
This is the third time the jewellers has earned a Guinness World Records title following two other successful attempts in 2015 and 2016 - the Most valuable guitar (with 400 carat diamonds) worth $2 million and Most jewels on a guitar (16,033 well-polished Swarovski gemstones) which was played by Jermaine Jackson. "Although we have successfully set two Guinness World Records titles before, we continue to challenge ourselves and create the world's top-level diamond art treasures. My team and I are very proud and excited that we have set a new Guinness World Records title again." 8

Aaah golf, the sport of old rich people who have the time to spend hours upon hours on the rolling green hills of a golf course, following a tiny white speck. Many of us who have never even attempted to play golf are sure we wouldn’t like it simply because of the people that are most often seen playing it don’t seem to be the most exciting of individuals. But those of us who have tried see this pretty differently, so join us this Golf Month as we show you how much fun this sport can be! The History of Golf Month The modern game of golf originated in 15th-century Scotland, but the game’s ancient origins can be traced back to the Roman game of paganica, in which participants used a bent stick to hit a stuffed leather ball. Some historians assert that paganica spread throughout Europe as the Romans conquered most of the continent almost 2,000 years ago, and eventually evolved into the modern game. Other historians believe that chuiwan, a Chinese game, played between the eighth and 14th centuries, was the father of modern golf as we know it. A Ming Dynasty scroll dating back to 1368 entitled “The Autumn Banquet” shows a member of the Chinese Imperial court swinging what appears to be a golf club at a small ball with the aim of sinking it into a hole and would thus seem to support this version of history. Golf Month was created just recently to encourage people who may not think they would like golf to give it a try and benefit from all this sport has to offer. How to Celebrate Golf Month The best way to celebrate Golf Month is to get out and play some golf! If you’re someone who already plays golf, maybe try getting some friends or family members who have never tried to join you for a few hours on the course. And if you’ve never tried, it’s the perfect time to! You’ve tried scuba diving and paragliding, and you’ve even learned to play chess…so why not golf? If you’re still on the fence, consider some of the ways playing golf can be good for your health: • Playing golf gets you outdoors and keeps you there. Be honest, how much time do you really spend outside? Seeing as how most jobs are stuffy office jobs these days, we assume your answer to this question is, “Not to much”. A game of golf is guaranteed to keep you outdoors and breathing in that fresh air for approximately 4 hours! • Golfing burns plenty of calories. Surprised? You shouldn’t be. The average golf player walks between 5 and 7 kilometres during one game, which burns about 1,000 calories. And all without breaking a sweat! • Golf has been proven to reduce stress levels. Thanks to the hours spent either almost alone or conversing with fellow players on a wonderfully green backdrop, golfers tend to be relaxed and more ready to face stress and challenges than players of other sports. So what are you waiting for? Get celebrating Golf Month today!

BY JEN BABAKHAN You might think that "bronzed" look in summer makes you look healthy, know that a suntan can come with a higher price than you wish to pay.
When Janet, 42, suddenly noticed a bump on the side of her nose while looking in the mirror, she assumed it was a harmless pimple. Two days later, things got weird, “It just sort of self-exploded, and then it began bleeding excessively,” she says. For the next three weeks, Janet watched as the spot on her face scabbed over and bled repeatedly. Finally, her husband convinced her to go to the doctor. “He’s a firefighter, so he’s seen everything. I really thought the doctor was going to laugh that I came in for a zit,” she explains. To her disbelief, her doctor referred her to a dermatologist. “My primary care doctor said he was willing to bet I had basal cell carcinoma. The dermatologist confirmed it with a biopsy. I was shocked,” she says. A tanning bed aficionada since her teens and an avid runner who disregarded sunscreen, Janet was especially susceptible to skin cancer—which happens to be the most common type of cancer. “I begged my mom to sign permission slips for tanning beds when I was 16, and I tanned before every vacation. Looking back, I’m not surprised I got it,” she explains. After undergoing a separate surgery to remove a dime-sized chunk of her nose, Janet’s next stop was a plastic surgeon to restore her appearance. Her options were limited: “A skin graft isn’t desirable on the face because the color never matches,” she says. “My doctor said I wouldn’t be satisfied with it, and recommended the flap surgery instead.” For this procedure, the surgeon would transfer skin from a discrete spot on her forehead to patch her nose and then—prepare yourself—route a vein from her forehead to supply the patch until the skin can survive on its own. And that vein is left hanging from the forehead and connected to the nose in a sort of loop in front of her face. Janet asked her surgeon what the recovery was like. “He said that I could return [to work] after a few days, but most people take three weeks off to heal because they don’t want to leave the house looking that way,” she recalls. Janet chose the flap surgery and immediately afterward understood why most people take the three weeks at home. “I cried almost every day, it was such a painful open wound—and emotionally it was just a very dark time,” she recalls. “I tried to go shopping at Target, and people would just stare—or worse—leave the aisle entirely,” she says. Tired of the curious stares from strangers, and even those of friends, Janet went “live” on Facebook to explain her new look. “After the video, I received so many notes from others undergoing the same treatment who felt comforted that they weren’t alone,” she recalls. It was exactly the push she needed to become more vocal about her diagnosis. “It’s heartbreaking to me to think that others going through this feel like they need to hide,” she explains. After Janet had her final stitches and the vein removed, she says, “I remember leaving the doctor’s office and feeling like I made it.” Today, Janet is cancer-free and visits her dermatologist twice a year. She has partnered with the Miles Against Melanoma Foundation and has found educating others to be rewarding. Her words of encouragement to those facing a skin cancer diagnosis are simple, yet memorable: “You will feel the sunshine on your face again—just wear your sunscreen.”

There is almost no other event that could be called as influential as the printing press that Gutenberg invented around 1440. Before this monumental creation, books were copied by hand. Laboriously, monks and other men of learning would spend hours and hours through the bright sunlight and the weak light of an oil lamp to make copies of religious texts, literature, and official documents. It could take years just to copy one book. When Gutenberg devised a printing press that could print copy after copy in just a small fraction of the time, the whole world changed dramatically. All of a sudden, everyone could have their own copies of the religious scriptures. They could read them for themselves. Political pamphlets could be made by the thousands and influence the masses like never before. Learning was not limited to a select few. It was available for all. Books were not just for the rich. They could be made for those of lower classes. Gutenberg’s press changed the political world, the religious world, and the everyday life of man. No more would we lean on a select few to direct us. We could take it for ourselves.
