Patrick Holloway MSN Causes and Microsoft, a proud sponsor of the 2018 Special Olympics USA Games in Seattle, are bringing you special coverage of these games that have brought inclusion and empowerment to millions around the world with intellectual disabilities. Tennessee’s Eric Wilson got a bit antsy when it came time for him to do his first bench press of 127 pounds at the Special Olympics USA Games power lifting competition. Nicknamed ‘The Hulk,’ he lifted the barbell off and—without listening or waiting for the judge’s instructions to do so—pressed it like it was nothing, and returned it to the rack. As per the rules in power lifting, the lift did not count. With his first press disqualified, Wilson, 31, had only two presses that could count: one with a weight of 132 pounds and one of 149 pounds. “That’s when we flip the switch,” his coach Omar Lopez said later following Wilson’s power lifting competition at Seattle’s Husky Stadium on Monday. “We just turn it on and zzzzzzip. He’s hulking out.” Friends and family would follow Lopez’s example and move their hands across their chest like they were tearing shirts off or flipping the switch. Lopez would fling a T-shirt with The Incredible Hulk pain-ted on it over his shoulder. It was time to hulk out. That’s exactly what Wilson did on his second lift of 132 pounds. He walked up to the stage, flexed his muscles, and got angry like his favorite Marvel Comics character. Not the recent portrayals seen in the many Avengers movies by Edward Norton or Mark Ruffalo, but Lou Ferrigno, the original actor/bodybuilder from the live action Incredible Hulk series that began in the late 1970s. “He’s my favorite body builder,” Wilson said following the bench press. When asked about Hulk Hogan and any similarities to the professional wrestler that the mannerisms could be mistaken for, he shakes his head. “He’s my favorite wrestler, but I like Ferrigno.” There’s one difference: within all the aggression and anger, Wilson put out a large smile to applause before lying down on the bench. Just like the monstrous green avenger, Wilson patiently held 132 pounds in the air while awaiting the judge’s orders down, up, then rack; following all in sync. The first set that was disqualified is no longer relevant. Wilson would again pose and head to the back. Wilson wouldn’t have any more lifts disqualified for the rest of the day. "The athletes we work with, there’s a lot of pressure and it’s hard to overcome not doing so well the first lift,” Lopez said. “The first lift sets up your tempo for the entire competition. What’s most impressive about Eric is that he didn’t have a good first lift, but he has the will to overcome. It’s not easy, but we went up in weight.” Each subsequent lift had a similar structure: Wilson would flex his muscles, hold the weight and move things in sync with the judge’s commands. His third lift, also successful at 149 pounds, would be enough to take second place in the 74k weight class with the bench press. Florida’s Brandon Sanford would walk away with the honors pulling off a 181-pound lift. The deadlift is where Sanford couldn’t touch Wilson. Wilson would knock out all weights of 242 pounds, 281 pounds and his best 303 pounds, a landslide. Unfortunately, since he didn’t participate in the squats, first place overall in the weight class isn’t a possibility. Wilson is all smiles when his competition is over. He joined his family, who all wore identical grey T-shirts with an outline of his body and the words, “The Incredible Eric” drawn over it. Visiting Seattle for the Special Olympics, he wants to check out Pike Place Market and see the famous fishmongers throw fish. “I love bodybuilding,” he said, quickly forgetting about Pike Place Market. “I’ve been lifting for years.” “I’ve only been with him since May,” Lopez says. “But not only do I love working with him, warming up, working out and being here, I love how much we’re learning from this individual; it’s amazing.” Following that statement, Lopez turns to Eric and says, “Can you give me one more Hulk sign?” On command, Wilson rounds his arms out and flexes his muscles. They swell out and his singlet looks even tighter around him like he got blasted with gamma rays. But there’s still the smile. 2

Two jewellers from India have broken the record of Most diamonds set in one ring, by setting a staggering 6,690 diamonds into an 18 karat rose gold structure, shaped like a lotus flower.

Vishal Agarwal and Khushbu Agarwal, both based in Surat, Gujarat, constructed the ring using a base component and 48 individual diamond encrusted petals. The lotus ring weighs more than a golf ball, with a total weight of just over 58 grams. It took six months to design and craft the intricate ring, which has been valued at $4,116,787 USD. Vishal created the design for the ring, and Khushbu, who owns Hanumant Diamonds, funded and provided the resources for the ambitious project. The ring was manufactured by Hanumant Diamonds artisans, based in Mahidarpura, Surat. The lotus ring took the record from Savio Jewellery's Peacock Ring which earned the record in 2015, with 3,827 cut diamonds. The idea for Vishal and Khushbu's creation came from them wanting to raise awareness about importance of water conservation. They decided to use their work to generate awareness and settled on a lotus flower design because it is the national flower of India, and because it depicts "the beauty growing in the water-world". "As fame is so much attached to a Guinness World Records title, we can put it to good use by bringing together like-minded people to work towards a beautiful world," Vishal and Khushbu says. As with all our diamond related records, the diamonds used for the project had to be verified as conflict free from independent sources. 6

SOMETHING FOR DOGGY You will need: • Old, worn out sweater; • Scissors; • Sewing kit (only if the fabric needs that). Directions: • Put your sweater on a plain surface and cut down one sleeve of it by following the curve of the shoulder seam (make sure the sleeve is wide enough to fit your dog’s chest). • Take the piece and put it on a plane surface, then make 2 holes where the dog will insert his front legs, follow the picture to see how it should look. Don’t make the holes too big as they will widen, but take care also to not make them too small so your dog feels uncomfortable. • Cut the sleeve to desired length if it is too long (if your doggy is small the fabric might be too long, so you will need to measure). • Fold the edges half inch under and hem. • Dress your cute and little dog or cat with the new fashion clothing you just made! 7

If you are among the roughly 10 percent of people who fear a loaded syringe, heed these survival tips: Fess up. Tell your doctor how needles make you feel; she might have you lie down to avert wooziness. (Seriously, make sure you tell the truth) Visit your happy place. Close your eyes, breathe deeply, and listen to your favorite song on noisecanceling headphones. Chew the fear away. A piece of gum or candy provides a sweet distraction from the doc. Skip the coffee. Caffeine can make you anxious for up to six hours before your procedure. Request a security blanket. According to Mark Burhenne, DDS, wearing a weighted blanket like the ones used during X-rays can make you feel safer in the chair. It pairs nicely with a therapy dog—a cuddly service that more and more practices are offering.

Fatigue is probably the symptom most commonly associated with iron deficiency. The reason for the exhaustion? A lack of oxygen flowing through your body. 'When you have anemia you have fewer blood cells to carry oxygen to vital organs of the body,' says Ian Tong, chief medical officer at Doctor On Demand. 'This oxygen deficit is global and can cause vague symptoms like fatigue, headache, and weakness.' You feel tired and weak: Iron deficiency is often underdiagnosed—and undiscovered. You develop restless leg syndrome: Restless leg syndrome, a nervous system disorder that creates that 'pins and needles' feeling and creates an urge to move your feet that could keep you up at night is one of the more unusual symptoms of iron deficiency, according to Dr. Tong. Your hands and feet may feel cold: The old saying may be 'cold hands, warm heart,' but cold hands could actually signify anemia, according to the Mayo Clinic. You may feel dizzy: Feel dizzy? Iron deficiency anemia could be to blame. 'Dizziness or chest pain can also result because your body is trying to tell you to lay down and let more oxygen get to the heart or brain,' Dr. Tong says. You might develop heart conditions: Because a loss of iron affects your red blood cell count, a shortage could cause your heart to work harder to deliver oxygen throughout the body—and cause you to develop heart murmurs or an enlarged heart. And if you already have cardiovascular disease, low iron levels could prove deadly. 'People with diseases of the heart or blood vessels—also called cardiovascular disease—could suffer a heart attack or stroke if they develop iron deficiency,' Dr. Tong says. You might crave weird things: One of the weirdest symptoms associated with iron deficiency anemia is pica, which is a sudden desire to eat some pretty unusual things, like clay, dirt or ice. You might develop headaches: If you find yourself popping pain killers for headaches on a regular basis, iron deficiency anemia could be to blame. 'When you have anemia you have fewer blood cells to carry oxygen to vital organs of the body,' Dr. Tong says. 'This oxygen deficit can cause vague symptoms like headaches.' 11

The car accident marred one teenager’s face, but it left no scratch on a friendship. The summer I turned 16, my father gave me his refurbished ’69 Chevy Malibu convertible. Cherry red, chrome accents, V-8 engine—a gift wasted on me at that age. What did I know about classic cars? The important thing was that Hannah and I could drive around Tucson with the top down. Hannah was my best friend, a year younger but much taller, almost five foot ten. “Hannah’s a knockout,” my mother always said. And sure enough, that summer she signed with a modelling agency. She was already doing catalog and runway work. A month after my birthday, Hannah and I went to the movies. On the way home, we stopped at the McDonald’s drive-through, putting the fries on the seat between us to share. “Let’s ride around awhile,” I said. It was a clear night, oven-warm, full moon slung low over the desert. Taking a curve too fast, I hit a patch of dirt and fishtailed. I then plowed through a neighbor’s landscape wall and drove into a full-grown palm. The front wheels came to rest halfway up the tree trunk. French fries on the floor, the dash, and my lap. An impossible amount of blood on Hannah’s face, flaps of skin hanging into her eyes. They took us in separate ambulances. In the ER, my parents spoke quietly: Best plastic surgeon in the city. End of her modelling career. We’d been wearing lap belts, but the car didn’t have shoulder harnesses. I’d cracked my cheekbone on the steering wheel; Hannah’s forehead had split wide open on the dash. What would I say to her? When her mother, Sharon, came into my hospital room, I started to cry, bracing myself for her anger. She sat beside me and took my hand. “I rear-ended my best friend when I was your age,” she said. “I totaled her car and mine.” “I’m so sorry,” I said. “You’re both alive,” she said. “The rest is window dressing.” I started to protest, and Sharon stopped me. “I forgive you. Hannah will too.” Sharon’s forgiveness allowed Hannah and me to get back in the car together that summer, to stay friends throughout high school and college, to be in each other’s weddings, and to watch my four teenagers fawn over her three younger children. I think of her gift of forgiveness every time I’m tempted to resent someone for a perceived wrong. And whenever I see Hannah. The scars are so faded no one else would notice, but in the sunlight I can still see the faint shimmer just below her hairline—for me, an imprint of grace.

Trauma Terapie Unitas www.connectivetherapy.co.za Kosbaarder as die wereld se skatte. Maar nie goed genoeg vir my nie. “Try to remember, the kind of September, when life was so slow and oh’ so mellow. Try to remember, the days in September, when you were young and a good Fellow. Then follow…follow you heart.”

Of jy nog steeds jou onderlip byt, as jy konsentreer en jou ken vryf as jy peins? Ek wonder of jy weet…. hoe jy heeltemal vanself alles presies perfek antwoord - 100 % in my siel se woorde… Daarvan is ek meer as dood-seker. 14
