Home & Gift Harrogate 2015 is now open for business
Home & Gift Harrogate 2015 is open for business. Thousands of visitors will be welcomed to the hub of the home and gift industry for the four-day show, which runs from today, Sunday 19 July through to Wednesday 22 July. “We have made some changes to ensure planning and buying is easier than ever before,” explains show director Cleere Scamell. “There is access to the widest range of new and exclusive lines across four vibrant show sectors: Gifts, Interiors, Greetings & Stationery and Jewellery & Fashion.” Organisers have also gone to great efforts to introduce a new design-led marquee. Design Point 5 offers a mix of great giftware and is a must-visit for greetings and stationery products. “For the first time ever you can access the Design Points directly from Halls Q and the Kings Suite,” adds Cleere. “To help visitors navigate, we have introduced our firstever app which is available via the App Store or GooglePlay.” Responding to visitors’ requests to make the vast show more accessible, there is now a new and improved layout which cuts the time spent travelling between the 15 halls – the trip between new Hall Q and Design Point 1 is now two minutes, rather than the 20 minutes it took in previous years. In a first for Home & Gift Harrogate, 2015 sees the inaugural Great Northern Retail S Summit take place in the Majestic Hotel tomorrow, Monday (see page 2 for more details). S Speaking about the event, Cleere says: “The industry has been crying out for an event that ggenuinely delivers expert insight and practical business advice to retailers, so where better to host it than at the heart of this amazing show?” Also make sure to look out for the curated Product Trails. The ‘New’ Trail showcases th the latest, freshest and most innovative products, all highlighted with ‘new ‘swing tags and st stickers, while Christmas, Eco and Best of British trails are also available. Harrogate also w welcomes more than 150 brand new exhibitors to the show this year.
A knight in digital armour A special 90-minute workshop on how to make digital work for businesses is taking place today, Sunday 19 July, at the Ballroom, Majestic Hotel at 4pm. The workshop is called ‘How to do your Social Media in 30 Minutes a Day’ and will be led by business builder and entrepreneur Warren Knight. Warren is the author of Think #Digital First and will offer business owners handy tips on how to save time, how to design a seven-day social media campaign, and perhaps of most interest to everyone – how to increase online sales by five hundred per cent.
A whopping eighty per cent of home and gift retailers say they have noticed an upward surge in consumer confidence. Retailers were responding to an anonymous survey conducted by Lema Publishing, publishers of the Daily News, in the run-up to Home & Gift Harrogate. The survey, which was carried out via Surveymonkey.com, targeted readers of Lema Publishing’s key titles including Gifts Today, Greetings Today, Nursery Today, Tableware International and Toys n Playthings. “Sales are trending back up,” pointed out one retailer, with another telling the Daily News that “consumers seem to be spending”. Sixty-seven per cent of business owners explained that this has manifested itself with an increase in sales volume, fifty-five per cent said they have noticed an increase in the average spend per customer, twenty-two per cent have benefitted from rom an increase in footfall and more than thirty-three perr cent say there has been an increase in the number umber of higher-priced items sold. “We are based in a smalll village and have noticed a considerable upturn turn in footfall this year,” said one retailer. “This, his, along with an increased average spend nd has meant we are up 15 per cent on last year’s figures.” Interestingly, eighty perr cent of retailers said trading is better tter in 2015 when compared to the same me time period in 2014. When asked if performance ance is in line with expectations, ninety per cent of retailers said that it is, with th eighty per cent rating the overall health alth of the home and gift industry as good. “There is still the ever increasing number of outlets ets that offer cards and gifts as an add-on line,” one retailer er told the Daily News. “But if you can maintain that all important point of difference nce in-store, I think the future e is positive.”

Home & Gift Harrogate 2015
The gift of giving The Giftware Association’s chairman Michael Papé speaks to the Daily News about the association’s presence at Home & Gift Harrogate and what their talent spotters are looking for when it comes to the Gift of the Year What presence will The Gift Association have in Harrogate? We will have a very strong one. We have our usual manned stand, K10 in the King’s Suite, where we’ll be looking to help existing members and subscribers and enrol new ones. And the voucher scheme is again operating, so those who are signed up with The GA will be taking advantage of special offers being made by exhibitors who belong to the association. It’s not too late for retailers at the show to get these benefits, they should simply go to The GA stand and sign up as a member or subscriber and then they will receive their vouchers.
Will your talent spotters be looking for products that are suitable for the GA’s Gift of the Year competition? Most certainly. Our judges, retail members and subscribers are handing out special business cards which are also available from The GA’s stand to suppliers of products they like to encourage them to enter. These talent spotters will then fill in a form with the appropriate details to enable The GA team to make follow-up visits to those exhibitors’ stands.
Home & Gift is known as the social show, so there will also be time to relax, won’t there? Of course! The GA and show organisers Clarion Events will hold a get-together for the association’s members and subscribers at the close of the show on Monday at the barbecue area in the grounds of the Majestic.

The team at Caroline Gardner has added another string to its bow with a move into producing roll wrap direct. Her initial range includes four everyday designs including bestselling and icon prints, and two Christmas designs, one of which is gold foiled. The wrap quality is true to Caroline’s passion for quality product with three metres of wrap at 80gsm. Each unit is supplied in a sleek Caroline Gardner display unit. www.carolinegardner.com
Finally Michael, it must be a blow losing your popular chief executive Isabel Martinson after nearly 15 years? Well, it is. But you know what they say, nothing is forever. It was Izzy’s decision and we, of course, respect it. While we will all miss her, it will be business as usual as we look to appoint her successor. We’re in no rush to do that as it’s crucial that we find the right person. The GA’s mission to create more trading opportunities for our suppliers and retailers is ongoing and we won’t be taking our eye off the ball.

Xystos partners with Kringle Xystos has announced a partnership with US company Kringle Candle which will see it distribute the brand in the UK and Ireland. General manager Tom Sykes explains that Xystos is determined to further extend its UK market share in this key sector. To this end, it has formed a new partnership with Mick Kittredge, his father Michael founded Yankee Candle, and is now the sole distributor for American manufacturer Kringle Candle in the UK and Ireland.
Three exhibitors tell us why…
“
Mick considered “several options” before concluding that Xystos was best equipped to help grow the brand, which produces beautifully crafted and highly fragrant candles. “The Xystos team caters to the very best stockists and its service and track record as a distributor for home fragrance are very impressive,” he says. And the man who, with his father, established Kringle in 2010 adds that it looks forward to working with Xystos to increase its already enthusiastic and loyal UK fan base with “exciting new fragrance introductions”.
NPW embarks on exciting rebrand DP2-27
Massachusetts-based Kringle promises that, in addition to a vast assortment of fragrances, it will offer a comprehensive range of candle formats, with its premium products ideal for both home use and gifting. This will be Miss Milly’s second Home & Gift and a definite must-attend as last year’s edition was our best show of the year! We were busy from the moment we opened and had customers standing three deep at times. Home & Gift Harrogate 2015
Almost 30 years at
Harrogate Harrogate veteran Simon Willis has been attending Home & Gift for almost 30 years, first with Denby, then Royal Doulton, n, Royal Crown Derby, and now with Global Luxury Brands. Here, ere, Simon looks back fondly on his career at the show This year, I will be showing at Harrogate for the very first time in my own right as Global Luxury Brands (stand Q42). It’s a scary move, but the show has such influence with buyers that when I was lucky enough to secure the agency for De Rosa Collections, I felt there was only one way to launch that range, Home & Gift 2015. Along with Herend Porcelain, Bronte Porcelain, Villeroy & Boch and William Edwards we hope this will be the first of many visits back to one of my favourite shows. It was almost 30 years ago that I first got involved in Home & Gift. As a fresh-faced – oh, and thin – 22 year old I was dispatched, loaded with stock, from Denby in an old hot and noisy Bedford van... quite exciting as it was my first experience of having use of the company vehicle! As always, the weather was superb, way too hot for unpacking and setting up a stand, but it was brand new and all so exciting back then. In the early days, marketing juniors were only trusted with transport and unpacking before David French and his famous team came in to do the ‘proper work’; and obviously enjoy the hospitality that Harrogate had to offer, something that my colleagues, Tony and David, and I could only dream of. After a couple of shows with Denby, my move to Royal Doulton in 1989 meant much less hands-on involvement with the show and far more armslength planning. It was still a highlight of the year both as a social event and as a valuable opportunity to get first-hand feedback – from both the sales team and the customers on the new products we had spent months working on with the factories. In July 2000, Hugh Gibson and his family purchased Royal Crown Derby from Royal Doulton and I was lucky enough to be sales and marketing director for the next 14 years. Then, the very much hands-on involvement in Harrogate started all over again. For many years, we were to be found showing in The George Hotel. Much as I am finding now when you embark upon a new venture, it’s
“Of course, the social side of Harrogate has always been one of its many attractions” both scary and exciting. The difference back then was that I had a great team to help and was lucky to keep that team almost totally intact for all of my time there. Back then, the stand was relatively lavish with super lighting and the inspired displays, more creative than I suspect I will be able to achieve this year, but we all had great fun and saw a huge range of customers, something I hope I can repeat this year. One of the most memorable, and most successful (rather surprisingly) shows of all time was the year our stand collapsed, spreading the finest, broken, bone china all over the floor of The George. The noise might not have spread far but the news travelled fast. More customers than we could ever have expected to see came to commiserate and admire the displays that myself and my colleagues, had put on borrowed trestle tables. Never let it be said that we were lacking in resolve back then! Of course, the social side of Harrogate has always been one of its many attractions. The choice of restaurants means that you are never at a loss for new places to eat. One of the most onerous tasks at Derby was that of Social Secretary-Harrogate; a role Jim Stark, and then Bill Menmuir, undertook with gusto. Many of the restaurants visited over 30 years still remain favourites. There are stories aplenty, many of which I regret I cannot tell… but there is one hedge on the way back from William & Victoria’s that has broken the fall of two of my colleagues. Yes, you know who you are! I am certainly looking forward to seeing old friends, and new, this year so please stop by and see Global Luxury Brands on Stand Q42. Here’s to the next 30 years!

Willowgreen Home & Gifts
a range of men’s gifts to complement “I would really like to find the small amount I currently have
”
Amanda Dutton is founder and owner of Willowgreen Home & Gifts based in Northwich in Cheshire. Established in 2011, Willowgreen offers a wide range of gifts, including brands like Heaven Sends, Caroline Gardner, Gisela Graham, Sia, East of India, Parlane and Emma Bridgwater.
On the show I feel that Home & Gift is a more relaxing show than many others and I like to use my time here to search out new up-and-coming designers and smaller companies I may have missed elsewhere, or who may be showing for the first time. I like to make last-minute additions to my Christmas line and source fresh new products to bring in at the New Year. On sourcing This year, I would really like to find a range of men’s gifts to complement the small amount I currently have on offer at Willowgreen. I’ve yet to find the products that tick all the boxes in terms of quality, style and price. On navigating the show I would advise new visitors to do their research before they even arrive, particularly on which exhibitors they’d like to see. Arrive as early as possible and see these on your first day, as well as browsing the rest of the halls looking at potential suppliers and collecting all information. Once the day is over, get your definites and maybes together and return to them the following day to place orders or get as much info as possible to place future orders.
On the social side I don’t tend to spend much time on the social side of Home & Gift as I usually go alone, but there’s always time to grab a Pimms cocktail and enjoy a bit of live music between appointments! I say, enjoy the atmosphere and soak it up as Harrogate is such a lovely place to enjoy a trade show in.

giftware store, with a focus on tableware, based in Fulham, London.
On Harrogate The show is very important to us because of the time of year. We can introduce new lines late summer and order for Christmas as it’s not always easy ordering in February for so far ahead. We also find it very relaxing and friendly – and hopefully, warm! On sourcing I expect to find some new lines and finalise orders for Christmas. We are a large gift shop selling all types of gifts so we will be looking at jewellery and gifts and anything that catches our eye. On men’s gifts It’s not easy finding things specifically for men. We are always on the look out but we tend to stick to known favourites such as cufflinks, clocks including novelty ones, wallets and, believe it or not, dragons! Wallets are our bestsellers in men’s gifts.
On homewares We sell quite a lot of homewares. Vases and mugs are especially good for us and we find smaller items are proving popular. On navigating the show We advise visitors to slow down and enjoy the show and remember to stop and have lunch. Betty’s Tea Room do a lovely lunch if you’re prepared to queue. Take sunscreen and a brolly – you may well need both.
On Home & Gift Location, layout and timing is what draws me to Harrogate. July is when I start thinking about Christmas and this will be the first time that many of my suppliers will show their new Christmas ranges. This year, I expect to find new suppliers, pick up inspiration for the Christmas theme for my shop and have a Pimm’s on the lawn.
On sourcing I will mainly be looking for Christmas product and sourcing more gift than tableware – products that are fun, reasonably priced and attractive. I find unusual, quirky and colourful pieces of tableware and kitchenware do well as gifts, with good packaging essential. I’ll be looking for lots of little pick-up items along with decorations, games, greetings cards, candles and gift wrap. I will also be looking for items to decorate Christmas tables and for parties, like crackers, napkins, paper plates. And for Christmas-specific tableware like mugs and tea towels. Finally, I’ll be sourcing serveware and men’s gifts, the latter is always a challenge. On what sells well Sharing boards and bowls are popular and small products like coasters, mugs, espresso cups and salad servers do well for me. Animals are still popular – farmyard and woodland creatures. On navigating the show Do your homework in advance – go through the exhibitor guide and identify your regular suppliers and companies you want to check out and then create a hall by hall list. Tackle the halls systematically – I start in the conference centre, then the design tents, followed by those in the hotel grounds.

RJB Stone STAND DP1-49 | DP1-55
“We are launching more products than ever before!” Known for creating unique design-led products at affordable prices, RJB Stone – the home of Sass & Belle – will be introducing 800 new products to their everyday collection and unveiling 1,500 Christmas products at Harrogate this year. UK and international Sales Manager Megan Walsh (pictured) tells us what’s happening at RJB Stone. “Home & Gift Harrogate is key for us” This will be our fifth year exhibiting here. Home & Gift happens at a great time of year to help existing customers plan for the autumn and Christmas seasons, as well as providing an opportunity to meet new retailers. That’s why we’ve chosen to premiere our new A/W 2015 collections here and have a separate dedicated Christmas stand. There’s always a friendly and relaxed vibe and a lot of that is down to the creativity of the exhibitors and the gorgeous surroundings of Harrogate.
“Occasion gifts are in demand” Retailers’ requests for occasion gifts including Easter, Mother’s Day and wedding gifts have increased remarkably in the last six months. This year we have beautiful designs to fit all occasions, ages and tastes and our seasonal Christmas range delivers more than 1,500 decorations.
“We offer retailers comprehensive collections” Some of our most popular Sass & Belle collections include the fun Party Safari Animals and Happy Animals on Bikes collections. We love to draw on positivity, aspirations and fun. Classic collections such as Ashley Farmhouse are timeless and very popular for home accessories retailers. This year is especially exciting for us as we have created additions for many of our ranges, as well as introducing several beautiful new ones, to provide retailers with comprehensive collections that incorporate new products, such as bento boxes to our lunch box range.
“This year is full of change for RJB Stone” We have been working for some time on introducing a new trade website. We wanted to provide our business partners with a more interactive and user-friendly experience and offer an even easier ordering process. The website is due to go live this autumn. We also unveiled our new branding for RJB
Stone at the end of 2014 and this year we have incorporated this into our trade show displays. We were honoured that the GA shortlisted our Scottie Dog Foldable Shopping Bag for product of the year this Spring.
“We offer creativity and diversity” Our Sass & Belle products make fun and beautiful additions to the home. We offer creativity, diversity and trend-conscious products and our designers bring their unique styles to mainstream concepts. Lovingly made, our products are priced to provide retailers with the best possible margins. Our brand motto is ‘For the little things in life’ and we want to bring a smile to people’s faces.
“We have an open, honest approach to selling” We pride ourselves on offering an honest and open approach to selling. We want to ensure that retailers have the best and most suitable products for them, whether it’s an independent card and gift shop, a furniture boutique, multiple retailers, children’s store or a cosy teashop. We are highly accessible as our minimum order is only £150 and carriage paid for UK mainland orders of £200 so people have more flexibility with their buying power. We never use sales representatives so we know the products, the company and our customers’ needs inside out. We are able to offer expert knowledge and are genuinely passionate about the products as we’ve seen their journey from a new design to the retailer’s store.
Bring on the show! Home and Gift 2015 is very exciting for us as we are launching more new products than we have done before. The networking side of the show is also essential to us, building up relationships is key to understanding what our customers want and it also makes for a good chinwag. There is only one Home & Gift Harrogate! Discover RJB Stone at www.rjbstone.com Contact the team at rjbenquiries@rjbstone.com or call +44 (0) 207 346 0100.

Homewares trendspotting with… Achica
On trend… Blue homewares
Discover the latest homewares 5 trends for Autumn/Winter 2015 with Liam Butler, brand directorr of the international online Mixed Metals lifestyle store, Achica Plaster pink There will definitely be more pink around in Autumn/Winter but it will be a plaster pink – more brown with less blue, and will be used as a new neutral on which to layer more dominant colour. Grey, in all its 50 shades, will become passé as at the early adopter end of the market the consumer adopts this taupey pink neutral instead. The colour will be seen predominantly in paint and in linens, such as bedding and upholstery.
Metals no longer need to be kept to one element. There will be copper mixed with brass or steel, aluminium mixed with painted metals or aged bronze across everything from tabletop to lighting to occasional furniture.
’70s vibe Think vintage Emmanuelle films. Rattan used indoors mixed with jewel-coloured printed fabrics used in a layered way. Layered kilim rugs to cover wood floors and an explosion of patterns used in soft furnishings in soft autumnal colours.
Shades of blue Blue continues to be strong again replacing grey and used in a layered way. Dark navy, teal and aqua will continue to be prevalent in homewares adding a confident base to juxtapose lighter colours. In particular, there will be lots of mixing of darker blues with pale woods.
On trend...
Pastel Shades
Terramundi DP1-35 With pastel shades trending, Terramundi has come up soft tone trumps, delivering sugary pastel shades on a variety of its money pot designs. These cotton candy colours of pale blues, light greens and pastel pinks are translated via hand-painted spots, stripes and other patterns on its handmade money pots. www.terramundi.co.uk
Stone We are seeing the continuation of the trend for marble, quartz and granite being mixed with perspex and metal used as bases for lighting as well as incorporated into coffee and side tables.
Sophie Conran for Portmeirion M2 The Portmeirion Group will present its brands, including Spode and Royal Worcester, as well as its licensed brands, Ted Baker Portmeiron and Sophie Conran for Portmeirion. Having had a fantastic reception to the new Sophie Blue Collection, which devolved the classic Sophie pieces into a more decorative one with a timeless design inspired by traditional English sponge ware, new additions have been added to this and will be presented at the show. www.portmeirion.co.uk

Caroline Gardner DP1-113 Caroline Gardner’s quirky yet sophisticated designs are brought to life in her wonderful gift lines including gifts for the home and garden, stationery and accessories – think gift wrap, bags and greetings cards. On display will be a new collection of stationery and gift accessories, including a new tropical print. How important is Home & Gift to Caroline Gardner? This is Caroline Gardner’s seventh year exhibiting; the show has grown hugely over the years, with a higher level footfall but in a manageable space for retailers to navigate. It’s a really important show to us as it’s the launch pad for our AW ranges. Coming to the stand gives customers a chance to immerse themselves in the brand and pick the looks which work best for their stores in a fun and social environment. We also launch our Christmas collection here and with such detailed embellishments to this range, it’s great to order on stand.
It’s known as a social show, will you be socialising much? We organise a lovely meal with all our agents and the full sales team each year. It’s a great opportunity for us to get together and it’s the highlight of our week. However, you will also see the Caroline Gardner team out and about most evenings catching up with our agents and customers, it’s great to have everyone in one place for a week and the social atmosphere of Harrogate is really quite unique.
What are your show expectations? We always expect a great buzz at Harrogate as it’s such an intimate show. We are especially excited this year as we have moved to a new stand in the gift hall DP1-113, we are looking forward to getting to know our new neighbours!
What’s unique about your product and offering? We offer a unique selection of product collections for our customers, allowing them to order a range of our products simply in one go. They benefit from smaller unit sizes, free display units and a well-prepared collection of product based on bestsellers and what’s new.
How is the industry performing so far this year? This year has started off strong, our new card releases, such as Kaleidoscope, Ohh la la, Folklore and Modern Calligraphy are already racing to the top as key captions. These card ranges encompass a new style, however they are still distinctively Caroline Gardner, as they carry our well-known colour palette. Gift continues to grow for us which is a great success, we are truly excited to launch our new products, and see our customers reactions! We have built on bestselling products this season, and introduced key items into more designs! But we are especially excited about our gift collections, and as our third year creating these, we feel they are at their strongest.
