elcome to Tableware International’s fourth annual Awards of Excellence showcase. We bring you some of the most exemplary works of art this industry has produced over the past year or so. We are currently living in a very different world to the one we were all enjoying when we had our last awards. Unlike previous years where we have all been able to get together at Ambiente, enjoy each other's company and celebrate the winners, this year we have this finalists supplement and and the winners will be announced in the next issue. Despite the challenges, this has not stopped this fantastic industry from innovating and creating some truly exciting products and ranges. This is an award for the industry, judged by the industry. You will not find higher praise than that from your colleagues. The following pages introduce you to our acclaimed judging panel – all very busy people who love and value the tableware industry. They have gone above and beyond the call of duty, taking time to judge each entry based on its innovation, design and functionality, aesthetics and storytelling. The 2021 Awards of Excellence features 15 different categories including; fine dinnerware, casual dinnerware, serveware, barware, flatware, fine glassware, casual glassware, decorative, coffee and teaware, metals, hospitality dinnerware, hospitality glassware and innovative tableware. And not forgetting our Lifetime Achievement Award Winner and designer who will announce in the next issue.
Despite the challenges of the current pandemic we have received many entries from all over the globe from esteemed names such as Wedgwood, Denby, Herend, Nikko, LSA International, Riedel and many, many more. Our finalists – who you will discover over the course of the following pages – have been chosen because their products bring something new, exciting, fresh or even just downright functional, to the table. Whether it is design or aesthetics, each finalist has caught the eye of our judges for very honourable reasons. Our sponsors too deserve mention for their incredible continued support which we are always grateful for – you can learn more about them over the following pages. Supporting awards such as these is important. Because by showing your support – whether that is through sponsorship of an award, through being a judge or through taking the time to actually enter the awards themselves, you are showing that you value the industry as a whole. You think it is worth your time. And that is what we need, we must appreciate this industry because it deserves your time and it deserves your appreciation. And we, Tableware International, are incredibly proud to run the awards ceremony which honours the talents of so many of you. If you have entered an awards category but have not been named as a finalist, we thank you and encourage you to enter again next year. If you have been named as a finalist, we congratulate you, and look forward to seeing you all at Ambiente 2022!

Executed in sparkling crystal and hand-made by Riedel in Kufstein Austria, the exciting new collection of decanters features vibrant colours. The decanters are not painted - instead the colour is crystal in itself, which is overlaid by hand onto the semimolten glass, as each decanter is created, and is embedded within the clear crystal structure - thus ensuring the vibrant colours will never fade or lose their brightness. These colourful pieces take inspiration from traditional Venetian glassmaking techniques, which are brought right up to date for the 2020s. 14 TABLEWARE INTERNATIONAL AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE 2021

FINE GLASSWARE Riedel
Riedel Winewings www.riedel.com
Georg Riedel, in his long career, has shaped many functional glasses, all specifically designed to enhance the enjoyment of the liquid for which it is created. Georg, as the creator of varietal specific wine glasses, strongly believes that a finely tuned glass shape enhances the perception of all aromatic beverages. In the Summer of 2018, Georg was asked by a customer to create ”the ultimate glass” for Cabernet Sauvignon, a project which was to provide the inspiration behind Riedel Winewings.
Slowly, a new shape emerged: A flat-bottomed glass, wide and reminiscent of the wing of an aircraft, complete with winglets. Over the course of a year, through many tastings and by making changes to shape, size and rim diameter, what began as one glass for one grape varietal developed into seven different glasses to represent the most popular grape varietals. Riedel Winewings was born and was about to take flight!

CASUAL GLASSWARE Orrefors
Informal
www.orrefors.se In designer Björn Dahlström’s own words; “I viewed the process as an industrial design project, where each part of the glass was deconstructed, analysed and reworked into a new whole. The bowl at the bottom of the wine glass cup is wide to maximize the contact of the drink with oxygen. The relatively open cup is a lovely design detail, but it’s also better suited emotionally to nonalcoholic drinks. The champagne glass is a detour from the square element of the series, standing out with its fluted shape. The short stem harmonises beautifully with the other pieces in the series and means you automatically pick up the glass by the cup, which is good for balance and for mingling. The carafe has a distinctive character, with colourful glass and a prominent spout. The little bowl is ideal for use as a base, or for serving some kind of appetizer.”

Nunziatella
www.alessi.com Culture and tradition meet in “Nunziatella”, an original container to preserve and serve Mozzarella di Bufala Campana designed by Emma Silvestris and realized in collaboration with the Consorzio di Tutela Mozzarella di Bufala Campana DOP. A new object, the first of its kind, that combines design with an excellence symbol of the Made in Italy agri-food, intending to promote to the world the history of a millenary product. The container is designed to accommodate a mozzarella in the classic size of 500 grams, or pieces of lesser weight, with their respective liquid government that for proper storage must necessarily be equal to the volume of food content. The design is never casual and it can be seen in the details: “Nunziatella”, made of white thermoplastic resin with a matte external finish and a glossy interior, is completed by a steel ladle to collect, drain and serve this extraordinary PDO product at its best; the handle of the ladle is shaped like an “S” in order to be placed on the edge of the container when it is not in use.

The green iguana is a large reptile, yet it easily climbs the trees, is a good swimmer, and, like a cat, almost always falls on its feet. The inhabitant of tropical rainforests it is one of the most beautiful lizard species in the world, and its colouration is almost indescribably stunning. At high risk, it can lose its tail making up almost half of its body, and then regrow. The designer was inspired by the beauty of this extraordinary lizard, so this beauty of nature was painted on a Herend ornamental plate, limited to 10 pieces, depicted on a branch over water in its original habitat. It is noteworthy that the master painter can demonstrate with extreme confidence the always mistyhumid atmosphere of the rain forest of almost 100% humidity, though often not even the sharpest lens can reproduce it.

Ginori 1735
Ether Collection www.ginori1735.com
Éther, an aesthetic concept for a unique culinary experience. This is the new decorative motif created for Ginori 1735 by Constance Guisset, one of the most important French designers. “The creation of Ether for Ginori was quite similar to the way in which a ballet set is conceived. Ether is the scenic design I have imagined for the elements of the Aria collection. The dynamic movement of the graphic design seems to evaporate in the mingling of light and shade which makes the plates a sort of frame, within which chefs can play,” says Constance Guisset. Inspired by the name of the collection on which it develops – Aria – with her Ether motif Constance Guisset has created a nebulous atmosphere, revealing a breath of invisible air, which blows on ashes to confer movement and lightness to the surface of the plates. The texture chosen for Ether is interpreted in black which can indeed, because of its lack of tint, be matched with all possible shades. An ideal type of contemporary mise en place, a masterpiece of dry elegance that is aimed at those looking for a unique experience in the table setting and dish, able to combine aesthetics, functionality and play. 60 TABLEWARE INTERNATIONAL AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE 2021
