Panel: The Changing Face of Modern Retail – Creative Ways to Keep Customers Coming Kev Milner, Designer & Fiona Mullens, Greetings Card Editor from Hallmark

“We already do some social media and online, but these panels have really helped me to think more clearly about the whole process. A highlight for me was finding out about the intricacies of Pinterest, which I’ll definitely be using.” Izzy McDonaldBooth, National Glass Centre

Summit to think about From the future of Britain’s high streets to the realm of online and making sense of digital trading and marketing, yesterday’s The Great Northern Retail Summit was a meeting point for thinkers from across the retail spectrum. Audience members included everyone from retailers to designers, and all were there to glean expert insight into retail’s biggest issues. “Yesterday saw the inaugural Great Northern Retail Summit, and I was excited to join a packed-out room focusing on the future of the great British high street,” said Show Director, Cleere Scamell. Jacky Cuthbert from The Blue Magpie said the talks were “absolutely fascinating” and had plenty to take away. “It was brilliant to hear from all the speakers. People will always want that conversation and personal experience in-store and there are hundreds of things for me to think about now,’ she adds. Wayne Hemingway delivered the keynote during the morning’s High Street Revival topic, and during the afternoon the topic turned to digital. Closing out the day’s summit, David Skerret, Managing Partner of nimbletank was among the panel discussing Digital Innovations Shaping the Future of Retail. He said: “My everyday work often involves big brands, so it’s been refreshing and a great experience to talk with smaller businesses that have similar aims but on a smaller scale. This is a great way for retailers to learn not just what works, but also what doesn’t. Learning from other company’s mistakes is free but invaluable.”

“We’ve been exhibiting at Home & Gift for more than 50 years”

“It’s a logical extension within the fragrance market,” Ian told us. “We’ve been in business 18 years and I’ve been coming to Home & Gift for 17 years. It is a must-attend show for us because it gives us a heads-up on what is happening for Christmas.”

Richard Lang & Son Ltd. B18 Not only has Richard Lang served the giftware trade for more than 60 years, but they’ve been at Home & Gift since the start, more than 50 years. With more than 2,500 lines on display this year and some 80 per cent of product designed in-house, there is a gift for every possible retailer. “We’ve had such a great start this year and amazing feedback to our new ranges – visitors are noticing our new products and lines straightaway,” says Keith Edmondson, sales manager. “Our eclectic wildlife country range and stylised hare figures are really attracting attention.”

Other brands from Gaeltag include Lolita, Cow Parade and Tindra. “The Card and Gift by Tindra range is also new and is a real winner. It’s a gift you can post along with the card, so it doesn’t cost twice the postage.”

On bestselling products Our duck egg blue furniture sells well, as do our outdoor lanterns, hurricane lamps and seasonal garden furniture. In smaller giftable homewares, Sue Fenlon cushions from Evans Lichfield sell well and we’ve just started stocking candles from Golightme. We also sell photo frames from Richard Lang and lots of nautical-themed product from Giftworks, which do really well.

our sourcing calendar, to see and buy innovative new products to complement our offer. We love the show as it offers a diverse range of products in a relatively compact area, and it is, of course, in beautiful surroundings.

On sourcing We have already sourced the bulk of our Christmas offering – our main supplier for Christmas is Kaemingk – but as we’re planning to do Christmas in a big way, we’ll be looking for a few stand-out items for Christmas. We’ll also be looking for original, quirky products that aren’t available in competitors’ shops. On show expectations Sometimes you go to the show with set ideas of what you want to buy but are swayed by the amazing new products you see and so come away with a completely new image for the shop.

On trade shows I think trade shows continue to be essential for retail buyers today… buying blind or with a representative is never as good as touching and feeling the product, which is necessary to assess its quality.

Home & Gift Harrogate 2015

Getting the most

out of Harrogate Independent retail advisor and vicechairman of The Giftware Association, Henri Davis has spent many years attending Home & Gift Harrogate. There is not much she doesn’t know about how to get the very most out of the show. Henri shares her top tips for making the fair as productive as possible Retail buyers will be visiting Harrogate from all sorts of businesses, representing a wide variety of market sectors, some with one shop, some from large chains, some well-established and others looking to trade through their first Christmas. Regardless, all buyers will be looking for those great ‘must-have’ products that are going to drive sales growth. So how do you find these products when you are only there for a limited time and have potentially hundreds of exhibitor products to review? The answer is, you should be very clear about what it is you’re looking for in terms of type of product, price point and quality. Then, you need to prepare so that when you arrive at the show you can get started straight away. How a buyer should prepare depends on the type of business you have and your reason for visiting. If you’re an independent retailer you will often have a broad portfolio of products that you’re looking

10 tips for a successful show • Be absolutely clear about the types of product you need • Know where the exhibitors you want to visit are located • If you have meetings, know when and where, and then plan to work in that area around that time • Have contact numbers for those you are meeting with • Have water and snacks in your bag • Check you have enough business cards • Have a notebook and pen • Wear really comfy shoes • Wear layers • Carry as little as possible

for and therefore, you may need to cover a large proportion of the show. Often shows are used by independents to see existing suppliers, to review their new ranges and to look for new suppliers to fill any gaps they might have. If this is you, you really do have to plan your time at a show well.

Once you’ve established who you want to see, you can plan the areas you want to visit and how you are going to put your day together so that there isn’t a lot of time wasted walking between locations and back again.

If you’re looking to place orders at a show or immediately after, I think you need to feel you have seen all the possible options for the products you need before you commit to buying. As a buyer, I try and keep my days at a show as flexible as possible, every now and then I want to be sure that I see an exhibitor, in which case I make sure I plan to be in their area of the show at the time of the meeting. I’m always amazed at how different a stand looks depending on how you approach it, exhibitors spend a lot of time focusing on the back of the stand as this is often the biggest space. While that space is critical, in reality it is normally the sides/ends that a buyer will see first when walking an aisle so it is these that must grab their attention. If I’m tired at the end of a day, I often find I’m not really concentrating on what I’m looking at and, if I have the luxury of coming back for a second day, I’ll often walk the last few aisles I did at the end of day one the other way to see if I missed anything and invariably I have. Many of the show organisers are putting together seminar programmes and I always find it’s worth checking what’s on the days I’m there. Often this ‘time out’ allows me to refocus on what I need to do in the remainder of my time and I usually pick up some great ideas and tips from these sessions.

The Music Gifts Company has much to celebrate at Home & Gift Harrogate 2015. Not only is the company, which delivers gifts with a musical theme, celebrating 20 years in business, but it is launching an entirely new brand of men’s gifts. David and Colette Gee founded the company two days before they married in August 1995 and despite economic challenges have managed to grow Music Gifts into a successful brand. “We are proud to offer the largest range of British-made gifts based on a music theme, with lovely gifts for music lovers of all ages,” says co-founder David Gee. And while there have been challenges along the way, David says that he and his wife Colette have learned to always remain positive. “It is wonderful to see how our gifts have stood the test of time so well. The first product we launched was a shopping list, The Chopin Liszt, and 20 years later it is still our number one bestseller with sales in excess of half a million units,” says David. “Even after 20 years, we are still relatively small, but this allows us to offer very personal and friendly service,” says David, highlighting how establishing a rapport with customers and manufacturers is very important. “In fact, the highlight of the last 20 years has been meeting so many nice people within the industry and establishing friendships,” says David. It’s one of the many reasons David and Colette enjoy attending Home & Gift – to catch up with old friends and meet new customers. “We first exhibited in 2001. We’ve missed a few over the years, but now feel it’s one of the most important shows for us during the year,” says David. And this year is especially important for Music Gifts as they will be launching an exciting new brand, which taps into a new customer base. Enter element, a new brand of men’s gifts based around a variety of men’s hobbies and interests. “We’re so excited about this new brand, which

came about as a direct result of listening to our customers’ demands for men’s gifts,” says David. The range extends to mugs and coasters, socks, cufflinks, twin-pack hankies, pewter key rings and pins and birthday cards. For the mugs and coasters, Music Gifts worked with local illustrator Vikki Gibson who created designs capturing the speed and motion across 10 different sports. At launch, there are more than 30 designs of cufflinks. “We wanted to create something special and unique,” says David of element. “Over the last 20 years, we’ve formed a great bond with our craftsmen who make our products and we’ve managed to establish this exciting new collection.” As well as popular sports like football, cycling, golf, rugby and cricket, gifts feature running, motorracing, tennis, fishing, photography, motorbikes, darts, snooker, sailing, off-roading and even beer. “It’s important to offer customers quality products that still allow retailers to make good margins,” says David, pointing to the men’s socks, which are 95 per cent cotton, five per cent lycra, and come in six designs. But that’s not all. Music Gifts will unveil even more gifts for women, extending its jewellery range. “Our designer has made new earrings to complement the existing Heart of Clefs pendant,” says David. To incorporate both its ranges, Music Gifts will have a larger display at Harrogate this year, including a new bespoke display using the element colour scheme alongside the black and whitethemed display used for The Music Gifts Company. “Even though element is a new brand, we wanted to keep both brands within the same company to simplify account for customers, too.” Looking forward to launching the new brand, David says that while Home & Gift is always exciting, this year is especially so. Visit The Music Gifts Company on Stand DP4-50. or visit www.musicgifts.co.uk

Trade talk Founder David Gee talks industry performance, favourite gifts and celebrations On favourite men’s gifts “Of course, I love all our designs in the new men’s gift brand elements, but if I had to choose one, I would say the design our illustrator Vikki Gibson has created for our mugs. And as a very keen cyclist, the cycling one is my favourite.”

On the giftware industry “The industry is definitely more positive than it was two or three years ago. Customers aren’t as afraid and are more willing to invest in stock. I think people are more prudent, though, and watch their pennies more carefully, which I totally respect.”

On celebrating at the show “We work closely with our distribution warehouse so we’ve invited them to the show, as well as our illustrator and other friends and colleagues, so we will most certainly be celebrating,” says David. “If I say where, though, I doubt I could afford the drinks bill!”

Spotlight on...

Home & Gift Harrogate 2015

Ewe and Me

Ewe and Me is a well-stocked gift shop in Scotland offering everything from jewellery to homewares, to stuffed toys. It stocks Highland Stoneware, Arran Aromatics, Sheila Fleet Jewellery, Dora Design doorstops, Jellycat soft toys, among others. We talk to founder Janet Hartree “Scarves & jewellery sell well for us” Scarves are a consistently good seller, as is jewellery. In the summer holiday season we find Scottish products sell well, especially with tourists. Brands that do well for us include long established producers like Highland Stoneware with their beautiful hand painted pottery; Arran Aromatics, with their great range of toiletries and Sheila Fleet jewellery from Orkney. I found some lovely glass coasters at Home & Gift last year, which have done well and I’m looking forward to seeing the new designs from Joules Joules.

“We’ve not missed a show for years” Home and Gift has always been an important show for us and we haven’t missed a year for many years. Last year, we sourced new suppliers, mainly small businesses offering something different. It’s also great to meet up with existing suppliers.

“We stock up on plenty of jewellery” The timing is perfect for mid-season top-ups and

last-minute Christmas buying. I’m much more in the mood for thinking about Christmas in July than l ever am in February! The orders l place at Home & Gift are usually delivered in August when the shop is ready for the changeover from Summer to Autumn. This is when I bring in warm cosy scarves (winter comes earlier in the Highlands!), children’s microwaveable hotties and cushions and throws in new Autumn colours. We also have to make sure we stock up on enough jewellery to take us up to Christmas time.

“We’ll be looking for cuff links and wallets” We always struggle finding gifts for men. We do the travel clocks, the golf, hunting, shooting and fishing gifts. We will be looking for cuff links and wallets to add to our men’s range.

“We now sell more homewares” We noticed during the recession that customers were keen to buy useful gifts for the home. This trend has continued and we now

sell more homewares. Cushions and pottery are popular and we choose from Scottish suppliers when we can.

“Give yourself enough time to look around and decide” When l started attending gift fairs more than 30 years ago, the best advice I ever received was not to be too hasty giving orders and if time permitted to look around before making decisions. And this has been the way I’ve approached my gift fair buying experience ever since. Saying that, if I do see something new and exciting l’ll order it quick, eager to secure it for my shop. Make sure you give yourself enough time to look and decide. Oh, and remember to take a calculator and comfy shoes!

UNIQUE PRODUCTS and amazing CUSTOMER SERVICE. Consumers ought to ‘feel the fuzzies’ and sense they had a wonderful experience. BIJOULED, a delightful store in Harrogate, is a perfect example of this – they manage to create a UNIQUE SHOPPING EXPERIENCE for their customers both in-store and online.

Clare Jordan, founder of Clare Jordan, G33

We ask the exhibitors...

What are the most important services retailers can offer customers today?

Great products and service with a smile remain key. SOCIAL MEDIA is useful, helping retailers give their brand a friendly face. We are constantly inspired by our customers’ creative ideas, like HAMPTON’S in Penarth, South Wales – a beautifully stocked shop with a dog-friendly café and a strong local presence in the community through events.

Katie Meeke, co-director, Holy Mackerel, DP2-52

ONLINE SHOPPING is becoming more popular, so having a good, reliable, EASYTO-USE e-commerce site is crucial. Also, UK production is becoming more important – customers like to know where their products have been made and want a story behind it. Finally, PERSONALISATION is increasingly popular, with consumers demanding customisation options. We offer a few bespoke items online, which are doing well.

We’ve been coming to Home & Gift all the way from Orkney FOR 25 YEARS, and everything from the SHOW LAYOUT to THE DAILY PAPER and the high quality of exhibitors just gets better – WELL DONE TO THE ORGANISERS. We only came for two days but definitely should have stayed for at least three!

I LAUNCHED my shop just after last year’s Home & Gift and I’m really excited to be back for a second year. I’m looking forward to seeing what’s NEW this year, because there’s so much to be INSPIRED BY. I’m really on the hunt for new ideas and I’ll definitely be PLACING PLENTY OF ORDERS.

Home & Gift Harrogate 2015

Step up to the plate Owner of home and gift storee Plate Tableware in Fulham, London, Barry Seaman explains ains how his product offering has diverstified and outlines the importance of ensuring everything can make an acceptable gift Ten years ago I had an idea, a concept. It became a dream. I had an image of what I wanted to achieve, what I wanted to create – a new type of tableware shop – a tableware shop for the twenty first century. Even with my limited retail skills, I knew at the onset that my shop would never function and make a profit if I were to go down the traditional china and glassware retailer route. I had to offer something different. My concept centred on contemporary, design-led products with great functionality and, most of all, colour. I had a firm rule: everything in the shop would not just be suitable for personal use but it also had to make an acceptable gift for someone else. As Plate Tableware now approaches its tenth anniversary, it has been fascinating looking back at how the shop has evolved, changed, diversified and adapted to customer demands by extending its offering. The offering has expanded twice – once into kitchenware and, more recently, into giftware accessories. The first extension into kitchenware did not come easy. From day one customers were always complementary about the shop but would often say ‘this is a lovely cook shop’. It drove me crazy that people couldn’t see that I didn’t sell things for the kitchen. I eventually gave in, realising I was missing out on sales. Cooking was big business – it would have been silly not to. Making everything in the shop acceptable as gift was probably the wisest decision I made as a start-up. Today the convergence of homeware and giftware products continues to increase as suppliers have given everyday products a high-end, sophisticated design with traditional homeware products now giftier, rather than functional, usually presented in smart packaging. There are several giftware categories that work particularly well as extensions from tableware and kitchenware. Candles, especially scented ones in tins or glass are an easy sell along with soaps, hand-wash and hand creams. Stationery – recipe files, notebooks used for shopping lists and cook books also sell well. Flower vases continue to make popular gifts with extensions

“Making everything in my shop acceptable as a gift was probably the wisest decision I ever made as a start-up. Today the convergence of homeware and giftware products continue to increase” into gardening, especially herbs. Recently, items connected with ‘eating-on-the-go’ such as portable coffee cups, water bottles and bento boxes have been much sought after. If it’s a giftware product that works on the table or in the kitchen, then I will consider selling it. I try and find items suitable for different people (especially men and children) that maybe relate to different hobbies, interests or themes like baking or cycling. People like a small pick up gift that they can take to a dinner party as an alternative to wine or flowers. As a gift retailer you would be wise to venture into selling a range of greetings cards along with gift wrap, ribbon and tags. This can add £8 to £10 to a sale. I sold greetings cards from the beginning but my range has now expanded into cards for most occasions and they offer a good mark-up. The shop may have changed and diversified over the last ten years but throughout I have stayed true to my initial concept of colourful, design-led, functional products. Staying true is important as your customers get to know your style and taste and they come to trust your judgement in product selection and the ranges you offer. They soon appreciate that your shop is where they will always find something new, exciting and unique. They will get ideas and be inspired and always find something suitable to meet their needs. www.platetableware.co.uk

Home & Gift Harrogate 2015

5 minutes with…

Portmeirion Group M2 Ian Davies, head of retail sales and marketing services, Portmeirion Group Why Home & Gift? We’ve been exhibiting here for a decade. It’s one of the key Christmas gift shows for independents and some nationals too, and allows us to showcase our new items. We have a very strong track record at Harrogate, having seen a consistently strong order intake from attendance in the past. It’s also a very enjoyable show, with a really positive atmosphere.

What have been highlights for Portmeirion so far this year? The launch of the two Ted Baker Portmeirion ranges – sales have been positive. We’ve also had a fantastic reception to the Sophie Conran for Portmeirion Blue collection and sales of our Wrendale Designs products have doubled this year.

What ranges or extensions will you be unveiling at Harrogate? We’re extending the Ted Baker Portmeirion collection with two limited edition mug designs. We will also unveil a new festive pattern for Spode, Christmas Jubilee, and present various extensions to our Wrendale Designs collection, Sophie Conran for Portmeirion range and our classic Botanic Garden collection.

How do you stay on trend with your collections? We listen to our customers and we have a talented design team who know what’s new and emerging. We also use a trend analysis tool to predict future trends and take inspiration from around the world. Recently, there’s been a lot of crossover from the fashion industry into the homewares market so it’s a good place to spot emerging trends. As non-homewares brands begin to extend into the tableware and accessories arena, spotting appropriate licensing opportunities is also key.

What sets your product apart? Excellent design and quality, with a modern, fashionable twist.

Retailers are reporting an increase in the purchase of homewares as gifts. Are you seeing this? Yes. It’s become increasingly important to present tabletop items as gifts through gift packaging and retail displays, which suggest to the consumer that as well as practical items, these pieces can also make really great gifts. With our extensive giftable ranges, we are expecting to see great success at Harrogate. www.portmeirion.co.uk
