cover stars this month. We take a look at BabyStyle’s personal journey across the last 18 months. When everything got turned upside down in March 2020 due to the impact of the global pandemic, Andy Crane and his senior managers rolled up their sleeves and took to the phones and warehouse after sending all of their other team members home. You can read all about it by simply turning to page 12 (oh and of course if you visit them at Harrogate, make sure you enquire about the ‘secret room’ - I know I will be!). Graco launch safety campaign for car seats

As school restarts and parenting life picks up apace, Graco reveals the recipe for happy car journeys with children, as families get ready to travel here, there and everywhere again. Research with Graco’s Instagram followers revealed three key considerations when taking car journeys: safety, entertainment and cleanliness. As part of its ongoing efforts to become even more sustainable, Silver Cross is the first and only brand to offer its customers a car seat recycling service, which will launch during Recycle Week 2021. For safety reasons, car seats cannot be sold or passed on for second-hand use, so the new Silver Cross recycling service will stop them from ending up in landfill at the end of their life span. Silver Cross customers who no longer need their car seat can book a collection for it to be recycled free of charge. At the recycling plant, the team use specialist lasers to separate the recyclable materials, which can then be used in the production of other products and packaging across a variety of industries - with absolutely nothing going to landfill. David Abbott, Director of Marketing at Silver Cross, says “As a brand, we’re making a conscious effort to become even more sustainable through our products, packaging and recycling processes. Whilst 2020 was a record year for Artsana UK & Ireland, the home of Chicco, Boppy and Recaro, 2021 proved to be one of the most challenging on record for the entire nursery industry. Going From Strength to Strength…in the weakest of times Whereas most of the world is strolling back towards the way things were, life at BabyStyle HQ has remained ‘normal’ throughout the last 18 months. Sure, a lot of day-to-day processes have had to be adapted to protect team members and visitors, but the entrepreneurial spirit and gritty determination at BabyStyle to keep on pushing the boundaries of innovation and service has remained staunch throughout. You’ll be able to see some of the results of this at Harrogate, but we’ll get to that shortly… Whilst the government saw our industry as ‘non-essential’ last year, we all know the reality of having to work through the various lockdowns to keep the flow of essential products moving - ladies were unable to furlough their pregnancies after all! When everything got turned upside down in March 2020, Andy Crane and his senior 12

managers rolled up their sleeves and took to the phones and warehouse after sending all of their other team members home. Consumers were still needing their products; stores needed the stock to fulfil their orders so the flow needed as little disruption as possible. Every week saw the challenge grow harder and harder though as transport and port delays began to bite. The exponential rise in energy required to offer a baseline level of service became a multi-dimensional challenge after the first few months. As well as fire-fighting against the supply and transport issues, momentum needed to be maintained on major development projects that were already underway.

A special mention also needs to be made for the excellent digital support that BabyStyle has provided for customers and pregnant couples during the last couple of years. Leveraging their brand assets and customer service through a well co-ordinated and consistent social media presence across all of the main platforms, including a fresh forage into Tik-Tok, has been a real boon for the BabyStyle and egg brands. This activity continues at pace and they are setting a very high standard for other brands to follow and are continually reaping the positive benefits of it.

What’s in store for visitors to the BabyStyle stand at Harrogate… BabyStyle will be present in Hall G at the Harrogate Nursery Fair later this month and this comes as no surprise as they are part of a very small handful of brands who have never ceased to support the show. With all eyes on Harrogate as the current torch bearer for trade shows in 2021/22, we were curious to see if Andy Crane would give us the inside track on what everyone will be able to see on their stand as it has now been over two years since we managed to gather together like this! Cards were kept close to his chest, but there was a mention of ‘mini-eggs’ and while we initially thought that some chocolate was being offered it actually transpired that a new concept second stage egg stroller is going to be unveiled to the world and from the pictures we have seen it looks very, very appealing. The Vancouver nursery furniture set will be on physical display for the first time, and this Autumn addition to the Charnwood Collection perfectly coincides with Harrogate this year. New fashions for Oyster3 and egg2 will also be able to view, including the latest seasonal indie exclusive Oyster3 edition, the stunning Graphite. And if that wasn’t enough already, we are delighted to break the news that there will be a very, very exciting product that is being revealed to selected stand visitors in a secret room! We couldn’t get any more information out of Andy, but we love a secret room at a trade show and we get the feeling that this is going to be something completely unexpected from the brand. There has clearly been a lot of hard work coming out of Leicestershire over the last 18 months and while every part of the global supply chain has been unwillingly working against individual brands, BabyStyle has kept the pedal pushed hard to the floor and managed to continue to travel from strength to strength.

ello everyone and welcome to my little corner. This month I thought I’d have a little chat about the state of the industry and where we all go from here. I also want to touch upon the nightmares we’ve been having over the past few weeks – nightmares most of you will have had too. So, how have the past few weeks been for you all? Busy I hope? Busy or quiet I’m guessing you’ve come across Mr and Mrs Ostrich. You know the couple that are due in 6 weeks and for some strange reason they cannot seem to grasp why they need to order the pram and furniture NOW! That’s them, the ones that seem to think you’re pulling their legs when you say stock is taking months and not days to arrive. You’ll recognise them as they like to bury their heads in the sand and pretend that everything happening in the world isn’t, nor will it affect them. Ironically (This is where someone that knows Alanis Morisette brings my article to her attention so she can see something that is actually ironic and not just a list of unfortunate coincidences) these are also the 16

The truth is that at some point 99% of orders placed online in our industry have come off the back of you or me. These people have been in our shops, they’ve benefited from our experience and display stock. They’ve then gone home and ordered online. This will be because they either found it cheaper (or so they think), more readily available or that they had a negative experience in your store (not mine – we are brilliant LOL (I wish)). To me this means the customer bought from you but chose to order it from whicheverpramshop.com. Surely I’m just supporting the argument of the article I read? No, what I’m saying is that we need to get back to basics. Here’s another amazing JB apology. . . . .the internet and social media is your fishing gear, the bait being your brilliant shop, your mecca to prams – rammed full of wonder and products to try. That little maggot is you and your staff all fat and juicy, ooozing knowledge and

experience. What of the hook? That’s your prices. You can compete with online – if you think you can’t speak to you rep and work together – it’s in both of your interests to get that sale. Every person that steps foot through your door needs and deserve to experience the best version of your business, everytime! Don’t forget you have something online retailers don’t have – YOU! To go back to my fishing line analogy – the line is your website and social media. A good quality line won’t fail you. It will make landing that big fish easier. An attractive UP TO DATE website and social media presence will do the same. Have a clean and concise online presence – something that entices potential customers to visit you. Ensure your social media posts are engaging and get good interaction. There are so many amazing examples out there, some of you are doing wonders – others not so good. My point is that our industry needs in store – Online isn’t the future. A symbiotic relationship between the two is the way to go. Use the Internet as a tool to support your store and done correctly your store will benefit. And there you go, I hope you feel fully motivated. You don’t have to be the best nursery store in the UK. You just need to be the best nursery store you can be.

Harrogate Int. Nursery Fair ready to open their doors once more - 17th to 19th October 2021, Harrogate Convention Centre With it being nearly two years since the industry have been able to congregate at a UK trade event, the 2021 show is sure to meet everyone’s expectations. The show this year has certainly grown beyond expectations with the opening of a fifth hall being announced. The event will return bigger and better than 2019 and span across Halls D, G, H, Q and Kings Suite and will also see the exciting return of several major brands and first time exhibitors at the 2021 show, including Mamas & Papas, Dorel, iCandy, Cybex, Chicco, Recaro, Britax, Jané, Junior Jones, Out n About, Ergobaby & Tula Baby; and numerous show faithfuls such as BabyStyle, Meego, Obaby, DCUK, Joie, CuddleCo and Roma – to name just a few. “There is a real buzz of excitement about Harrogate this year as the industry looks forward to its first trade event in two years. We opened an additional hall to cater for demand – and recently announced a free after-show party on Sunday 17th October thanks to a collaboration of sponsors to be announced shortly,” Said Adrian Sneyd, show organiser,

“A large number of exhibitors for 2021 are brand new to the show, or returning after a break, so visitors will be excited to see some fresh and innovative ranges.” As the only nursery trade event in the UK the show this year will offer visitors a great opportunity to see many key suppliers all under one roof. By attending you will be among the first to spot new trends, experience new product launches, gain invaluable demonstration of products and meet innovative new companies entering the market. As an industry we can be extremely fixated on ‘brands’ and of course there are many reasons for this as consumers are brand focussed. Harrogate is also a great opportunity for you to meet these smaller fledgling exhibitors and view their ranges. Nursery retailers have definitely got the appetite for a trade show, with independent retailer Ian Davidson of Babylicious telling us: “With this being the first time we can all meet up since the start of the Covid pandemic, naturally

I’ll be making the most of it and attending for the full three days!” This is also echoed by many with Little Gem’s Darran Neal looking forward to being able to touch and see products on stands commenting: “The show couldn’t come sooner - buying from photos doesn’t work in my opinion.” Direct4Baby will be attending with a number of their team. David Ball comments: “We’ll have six staff attending the first two days, all with pre-booked appointments and then we’ll have some of our shop staff from our shiny new store attending the last day, as we’d like them to be able to see first-hand what is on the horizon!” For anyone in nursery retail, this is a not-to-be-missed event providing a one-stop-shop for everything for babies, toddlers and beyond from pushchairs and car seats, to nursery furniture and sleep accessories through to toys and gifts. We are looking for new innovation but we also need to add to our bedding and furniture ranges. We will of course look forward to seeing in person, new products from our current suppliers. How important are show only offers to you? Obviously show offers always help but only if it means we get to make better margin. If everyone goes back and discounts what they have bought then actually show offers make things worse. They dilute the margin you are making and don’t actually create more demand at all. As an industry it’s been so long since we’ve all been able to meet - what are you most looking forward to while being at the nursery fair? Seeing people - we have missed seeing people from the nursery industry.

We always like to visit our existing suppliers to see what new items they have coming, but this year we have a real interest in eco-friendly, low or zero carbon products - including some exciting new feeding options; we definitely want to make 2022 a greener, more sustainable year for Whites Farm Baby Barn. As an industry it’s been so long since we’ve all been able to meet - what are you most looking forward to while being at the nursery fair? Probably catching up with old friends and having a little taste of normality again!

We’ll have 6 staff attending the first 2 days, all with pre-booked appointments and then we’ll have some of our shop staff from our shiny new store attending the last day, as we’d like them to be able to see first-hand what is on the horizon! What will your focus be while at the show? To be honest I haven’t got a primary focus for the show. If something is amazing and stands out then I’ll be certain to check it out, however, we have a brilliant key range that works for us, which keeps our product managers very busy, so we’re not looking for a major overhaul or anything. Harrogate this year for me is more of a laid back, fun-fair which we’re really looking forward to being part of.

What will your focus be while at the show - for example, is there a particular product category that you are searching for? We don’t have a particular product category that will be our focus at the show, as we are interested in all products available, from baby furniture to safety gates and push chairs to car seats. Outside of searching for new and exciting products, we’re also looking forward to using our time at the show to build on our relationships. How important are show only offers to you? Show-only offers are important to keep our deals and sales fresh on both our website and in-store. Big buying decisions will be made from the show offers, helping us bring more convenient shopping to our customers, as we can package items in bundles with better margins for us as a business. As an industry it’s been so long since we’ve all been able to meet - what are you most looking forward to while being at the nursery fair? We are really looking forward to physically meeting with suppliers and getting a feel for new products that are soon to be launched. We are also looking forward to having a sneak peek at some of the new lines that offer innovative thinking into technology, as the baby and nursery industry grows more into this sector. I have made appointments with all suppliers that I currently deal with but have left plenty of time to visit other stands for new products to stock within both my stores. What will your focus be while at the show - for example, is there a particular product category that you are searching for? Baby essentials! I’m looking forward to filling our shelves with some new and fresh stock. Suppliers have been great with showing us new products via Zoom and emails but, just like a customer, we need to get our hands on them for a proper look.

I am looking at expanding our entire offering. I am interested in double prams, furniture and bedding in particular. There is a new brand of sustainable bedding called FORREST which I am keen to see. It is really different with very modern patterns. But I am also looking for other sustainable products. I have been contacted by Scandi brand, NOORDI who are going down this route with their prams and other products.

With this being the first time we can all meet up since the start of the Covid pandemic, naturally I’ll be making the most of it and attending for the full three days! As my mum Joan is now retiring to have a much nicer pace of life, I will be attending with my sister Sharyn who I’m looking forward to introducing to you all. My niece will also be with us, who is pregnant and looking forward to seeing products that are available - shout out to all you lovely brands product donations kindly received for the arrival of our ‘Babylicious baby’! How important are show only offers to you? Who doesn’t like an offer! Although that said, these are great if they provide an even playing field for all. As an admin of the NSG, of course I recognise that the nationals may have larger buying capabilities, but if you take a look at retail in general, it is the indies who are the real backbone of this industry and when brought together at Harrogate, our buying ability can be powerful! I have to say, lockdown in general was a time of reflection for me and gave me the scope to think about how I feel that independent retailers are currently viewed by brands. Perhaps now is the time for a rethink by everyone….? What will your focus be while at the show - for example, is there a particular product category that you are searching for? I don’t have a particular focus as will be attending to view as much as possible during the three days of the show. However, eco and sustainable products have to be high on the agenda - this is such an important area for nursery ranges and I will be actively seeking products that hold eco-credentials! 62

For us, the show couldn’t come sooner - buying from photos doesn’t work in my opinion. We were intending to travel up on the Sat night and have a few drinks with other retailers but I forgot to book Sat night and all the hotels are full (fingers crossed this is a good indication as to the popularity this year!), so we will travel up Sunday with a clear head and stay for Sunday and Monday night then travel back home Tuesday afternoon. What will your focus be while at the show - for example, is there a particular product category that you are searching for? Sandra & I are looking more at Nursery furniture as well as core wheeled products, we have been doing well with nursery furniture with no comebacks or complaints Have you pre-planned your visit with regard to appointments? We have made a few for Sunday and Monday, the normal stands such as BabyStyle, Egg, CuddleCo,Venicci, iCandy and Cybex. Tuesday morning we will use to mop up any new nick nack products that we might have missed. How important are show only offers to you? We (or rather I) tend to play the poverty card when reps come to our shops and the manufacturers have always looked after us well. What are you most looking forward to while attending? That’s an easy one to answer! I think this show is what we have all been waiting for, it will enable us to all put some spark back into the shops. We’re really looking forward to seeing everyone again!

mental health With World Mental Health Day taking place this month, FanFinders reveal the impact of pregnancy and societal pressure on UK mums’ mental health.

F

or many in the baby and parenting industry, the primary goal is making parents’ lives easier, whether that’s through innovation and the delivery of better products or resources, creating easier ways to purchase essentials and get advice, or ensuring safety. We noticed that while there are regular insights into shifting behaviours or habits to help us do this, the discussion around mental health often gets lost. There is great power in keeping this conversation going. Which is why we thought we’d share the results from our recent poll of over 1,000 mums about the challenges of new parenthood. SUB HEAD: The impact of pregnancy and birth The poll revealed that many new mums in the UK feel that the support they received during pregnancy was insufficient. In total, 79% of new and expectant mums felt unprepared for what they experienced during pregnancy. Despite 62% of mums polled saying they ultimately enjoyed pregnancy, 56% said they had a stressful, complicated or traumatic birth, and over a third (35%) suffered from postnatal depression (PND) or poor mental health following their pregnancy. When asked, 82% of those surveyed felt there could be more stories and information out there to better prepare

them for pregnancy. 76% also felt there needs to be more support or information online that could prevent mental health issues post-partum. While 37% said they didn’t receive enough support during pregnancy from friends, family or their medical team, one of the largest sources of anxiety for many was not being able to openly share their struggles. In total, 56% of those polled said they felt pressure to have a ‘perfect pregnancy’ and couldn’t speak out about the negative aspects.

Your Baby Bible When it comes to insufficient support, the pandemic has only exacerbated the situation. Many parents in the UK have been cut off from accessing vital resources or had appointments cancelled. This gave us the idea of producing a book with valuable insight from specialists to help new parents prepare, without the sugar coating. We wanted to cut through rose-tinted views on pregnancy and parenthood to give parents something to accompany them at each stage. Last month, we launched Your Baby Bible: The Ultimate Guide to Having a Baby through our consumer community and in conjunction with Louise Broadbridge, Your Baby Club’s official midwife, founder of Let’s Talk Birth and Baby, and the face behind Instagram’s @ thehonestmidwife. Available as a free e-book to every

parent that signs up, it features contributions from 10 experts, specialists and medical practitioners, covering everything from what to expect in each trimester, through to weaning recipes and how to support baby’s development.

Better support Louise believes that progress is being made on educating and speaking more openly about the realities of the pregnancy journey but there is still work to do. “With social media, I think we have high-profile mums that are going through the experience and are getting much better at talking about it in a non-idealistic way. You have the likes of Stacey Solomon, Kate Lawler and Ali Bastian, these new mums are now saying on those communities: You know what? This is really tough.” “Where we’re still lacking is education

when it comes to more complex deliveries and on topics like breastfeeding – I think we could do far better in how we teach it. We need more depth and acknowledgement of the fact that not every single parent can have a ‘perfect’ birth, not everyone can deliver in the same way or have the same experience.” Our core audience is at a crucial stage in their lives and as a collective industry, we have a responsibility to support them within our marketing or communication, by making it valuable, useful and relevant. When it comes to mental health, beyond sharing more resources and support wherever we can, we can also start talking less about the ‘perfect’ experience and speak more to reality. Car seat safety advice

Last year, the Baby Products Association produced a definitive guide to laws and regulations concerning child car seats in the UK in conjunction with leading car seat manufacturers and industry experts. Law changes

The Association recently advised that the sales of R44 car seats (also referred to as child restraints) must cease in the UK and the

The Baby Products Association has partnered with Nottinghamshire Trading Standards to provide an Assured Advice Scheme, which means that companies can receive advice about their products’ safety, for example; whether it meets the requirements of the relevant safety standard with an interpretation of these if required provided by the Nottingham division and which will be upheld by Trading Standards departments in England and Wales, and gives a firm grounds for defence in court. Julie Milne of the trade association, explains: “This a part of the Association’s Primary Authority Partnership and members

European Union from 1st September 2023. This means that they can no longer be offered for sale, either online or in stores. R44 means Regulation No 44 of the Economic Commission for Europe of the United Nations (UN/ECE). Any R44 car seats owned beyond this date can continue to be used and are still considered to be safe. The Regulations have been updated to reflect new technology and the latest Regulation is R129.
