His Majesty King Harald and Industry Minister Monica Maeland were honorable guests when the Norwegian Maritime Museum in Oslo opened its 100th anniversary exhibition ‘Norway is the sea’ on April 3rd. Through interactive media, games and a large virtual aquarium, children and adults can play and learn about the life in the ocean and the Norwegian modern maritime history.

“More than a classic exposition, this is a center to explore shipping and maritime activities,” comments the museum’s project manager for the exhibition Eyvind Bagle. The exhibition is spread over 500m2 and curious visitors can participate and test their knowledge through custom simulators and engrossing digital games.

Meeting Industry standards Kongsberg Maritime has developed a Watch Calling System for the KSim Engine simulator. It is used in scenarios where the marine engineer leaves the engine room and transfers to Unmanned Machinery Space (UMS). The simulated Watch Call system is based on real systems and meets the requirements of the Classification Societies. A certified Watch CallingSystem is required on board a ship in order to run UMS operations.

Swedish Minister Opens K-Sim DPSimulator at Chalmers

“One must be prepared for changes, think forward and embrace knowledge and technology. If only everybody could understand what ocean can accomplish when it comes to growth and job potential,” said Minister for Infrastructure, Catharina Elmsäter-Svärd when she officially opened Chalmers University of Technology’s new K-Sim DP-simulator.

Chalmers is the first training institution in Sweden to use a Kongsberg Maritime ‘full mission’ KSim DP simulator in connection with an engine room simulator, KSim Engine. Dynamic Positioning (DP) is a system made to keep vessels in an exact position with reference to a fixed or moving point.

It’s used to accomplish advanced operations, e.g. offshore, where precision is critical, so high quality training is essential.

DP simulators enable training and education of students in the advanced operations of DP systems found on board thousands of vessels. The DP knowledge acquired

In the beginning, DP was used for offshore drilling operations. Today, it’s also used i.e., in pipe laying and wind turbine installation operations, but also for passenger ships that instead of anchoring nearby vulnerable coral reefs, can choose to keep position by the use of DP.

The Regional Maritime University (RMU) has awarded Kongsberg Maritime a contract to deliver its K-Sim Engine simulator for its premises in Accra, Ghana.

RMU is a tertiary institution that gained university status in October 2007. It exists to enhance development of the maritime transport sector and the fishing industry in member states through the maritime education of students, training of marine personnel, research and consultancy and promotion of maritime co-operation.

The K-Sim Engine delivery for RMU comprises a full-mission ERS approved by DNV-GL according to Standards for Certification 2.14 (2011). Demonstrating the flexibility of K-Sim Engine, four vessel models will be available on the simulator: Trawler, Ferry, Anchor Handling Tug and Supply vessel (AHTS), and a low speed VLCC. Kongsberg Maritime will also deliver eight K-Sim Engine desktop stations, with Ferry, High Speed Craft with waterjet, AHTS vessel and VLCC models installed.

K-Sim Engine is in operation at maritime and offshore training institutes world-wide. It offers a wide range of functionality and configuration possibilities. Functionality at RMU includes Kongsberg Maritime’s BigView interactive mimic panel system, which can visualise in 3D, i.e., fire in a compartment as well as the impact of firefighting actions.

The simulation models feature compressors, purifiers auxiliary generators, oil fired boilers and main engine along with all control, monitoring, emergency and alarm functions –simulated to high degrees of physical realism and meeting DNV requirements. The Engine control room console also features a separate simulated CCTV for flue gas indication.

Extensive Upgrade and Unique New Rig Training Model for Simsea PRESS RELEASE

Simsea AS maritime training centre in Haugesund, Norway has chosen Kongsberg Maritime to support the extension of its offshore simulation facilities with new simulators and significant upgrades to existing simulators.

Kongsberg Maritime has also recently delivered a new rig simulator model at Simsea, based on the Floatel Superior accommodation unit, which is currently in operation in the North Sea. Developed as a part of the K-Sim Offshore simulators installed at Simsea, the new customised model will be used to train semi-submersible rig personnel in advanced operation of Dynamic Positioning (DP), position mooring system (POSMOOR), stability/ballasting and rig move/anchoring.

Floatel International commissioned development of the simulator model to provide training for maritime rig personnel and to support its safety strategy. Simsea has already conducted courses for Floatel International and today the organisation boasts significant experience of rig personnel training on Kongsberg Maritime’s simulators.

The new Floatel Superior rig simulation model offers the opportunity to practice on leadership and decision making in emergency and abnormal situations including communication and teamwork, all of which are training fundamentals. K-Sim Offshore has been designed to provide highly realistic, task specific or full vessel training exercises, making it the ideal foundation for such a diverse training program.

K-Sim Engine for Nelson Marlborough Institute Of Technology PRESS RELEASE

Kongsberg Maritime will deliver the latest version of its leading Engine Room Simulator (ERS), K-Sim Engine, to a new Applied Technology Facility at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) in New Zealand.

Taking place in June 2014, this will be the first Kongsberg Maritime ERS delivery to a customer in New Zealand but one of many to leading maritime training institutions in the southern hemisphere.

The new three-story Applied Technology Facility at NMIT will feature a mixture of learning and teaching facilities including classrooms, workshops, simulation suites, ‘informal’ student spaces and staff offices. A state-of-the art maritime engine-room training simulation suite has been specifically designed to accommodate the K-Sim Engine simulator.

The scope of supply includes a Full Mission K-Sim Engine simulator including BigView, 15 student stations and an advanced instructor station. NMIT will have four engine room models, enabling delivery of a diverse program of high quality training across multiple engine and vessel types.

Using K-Sim Offshore Class A bridges, EMAS Academy was challenged to move away from an operational skills focus to bridge team and individual’s resource management, highlighting illusive non-technical skills such as human factors management, effective communication, human computer interfacing, situational awareness, leadership & decision making, challenging, contingencies & risk mitigation, operation and ship safety. Drawing on its professional expertise and in-depth knowledge acquired on K-Sim Offshore, EMAS Academy selected three different operational scenarios. Creation, testing, integration with behavioural markers, fine tuning and complete story-boarding of each scenario was carried out. The builtin ability to record and replay each scenario on K-Sim Offshore encouraged EMAS Academy instructors that they were on the correct path and using the right simulator.

Today it is running the BRM course with successful results, both with internal and external clients.

By moving from Operational Skills focus to Team and Individual’s Resource Management Training, EMAS enables increased knowledge and collaboration as well as enhanced communication skills among crew members, which are important elements for safer and more efficient operations at sea.

Hogeschool van Amsterdam Extends Its Training Capacity

Kongsberg Maritime has recently conducted an upgrade and extension of the simulator facility at Hogeschool van Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

The upgrade includes extension of the visual scenes on the school’s three existing ship’s bridge simulators and two brand new ship’s bridge simulators, with 60 degrees horizontal field of view. Kongsberg Maritime Completes Delivery of Advanced Engine Room Simulator Model for Offshore Vessel Training Maersk Training Center (MTC) in Svendborg Denmark took delivery of an advanced Drillship Engine Room Simulator (ERS) model in February 2014. The new K-Sim Engine model is specially designed for the offshore industry’s training needs and will be used to provide integrated, realtime training for engineering personnel at Maersk Drilling.

From a distance, some think it looks like an amusement arcade equipped with gaming computers, but these machines offer so much more. The PCs recently installed at Lycée Maritime d’Etel are all equipped with the latest engine room simulator software from Kongsberg Maritime – KSim Engine – allowing students to virtually track faults and restore the engine to normal operations, as if they were in a real engine room on a 60 meter trawler.
