“Duchamp’s idea, of course” The sentence used as title of this project was said (or better it was thought) by a character of Roberto Bolano’s novel, 2666. This character realizes a ready made thought out by Duchamp: when his sister got married, Marcel gave her as gift a treatise on geometry with the aim to hang it out with clothes to let it absorb reality or at least to get it in thouch with the true world. As a tribute to Duchamp and Bolano, I decided to stroll around the city with my clothes horse (on which I previously hung some clothes and a book out) and, when I finally found a good location to place it, to take a picture of it. This project isn’t just a tribute, but it would give a rise to the reflection about the connection between culture and landscape.”

“Joli” outside, Punk inside, or the opposite. I am not much of a punk apart from creating havoc (messing up) with my own gun: the camera, the images. -Can you tell us more about your project “White Lady”?
In this project the main idea is to transform places into surrealist landscapes.
A character can transform the reality, even if this character looks like everything we expect: with a head, two legs, two arms, he transmits something unusual. The purpose in this project is to alienate ourselves from our own reality. -Why did you choose Peru to shoot this project?
I started it in the French countryside. I chose Peru because i was searching for that kind of atmosphere. There is something mystical and i think that the character (white lady) accentuates this side of Peru. -How do you choose the locations for your photo shoot? I think the location is essential. If you want to take unusual pictures you have to go to an unusual place. I work in two ways: I check out the place via google maps, or i move by instinct. Sometimes i get kicked out from the locations. Something hit me when I went to Chernobyl. I thought i would find a place completely destroyed infected, but i was surprised to see that the nature was abundant, and how things are apparently “normal”.

-You find yourself in what genre of photography? I want to work with different genres. A sociological side and an aesthetic side. Titillate an aesthetic from the ugly, play with the codes of aesthetics. -What inspires you the most?
I get inspired by people. I think that reality will always surpass fiction. If i didn’t invent some scenes, nobody would believe me. On the other hand these scenes do exist in real life, even crazier than we can imagine. This was also the idea of my project: “La Burqa”. -In France there was a big debate to ban the burqa in public places. What was the idea of the project “La burqa”?
On “La burqa” the idea is to push a double logic to the extreme: 1) The Prohibition 2) The idea that you can have a normal life in our society with a burqa. These two ideas, once applied are both stupid one as much as the other. Reality exceeded my imagination when i read the article about this woman that was fined because she was wearing a burqa while she was driving. For me this is the height of irony.

-How did you came up with the idea for “Fucking Tourist”?
I had the idea in Bali when one of the natives told me: “I’am sorry but all the tourists take photo after photo of us like we were objects of folklore, and one day we find ourselves in postcards. I do not want to be photographed” I said to myself: “He really thinks that my pictures will end up in postcards?” But then again: “He is right. Let’s shoot some portraits that can not be used for a postcard. For once they can express their feelings: “Fucking tourists!”. I wanted to work the “controlled” side of the photographs, because people on holidays are always smiling in front of the camera, it’s obligatory.
-You use often photography as performance or happening. Is this about going beyond the medium of photography?
I think that every photograph should be a performance, a selftranscendence for the photographer and for the model. I was having a hard time to shoot some photos from the project “White Lady”. Half hour of suffering which will remain in a lifetime picture, it’s worth it. Behind every picture hides a story.

-Your projects are open-ended. Will you continue them or will you move to other projects?
I will continue “Fucking tourist”, “La burqa” is finished and i have two or three pictures left for “White lady”.
-Who are your favorite photographers?
Martin Parr is the one that made me start photography,he is the master. And others like Nobuyoshi Araki, CÈdric Delsaux, Alec Soth, Kimiko Yoshida.
-I read in your blog, your article “It’s equally important to please and to displease.”. With your photography you want to please or to displease?
The two. The absence of reaction freaks me out. For me balance is when two extremes meet, not being in the middle.
-What do you want to transmit with your projects?
I try to show another reality. Do I succeed? It’s up to the viewer to tell.

Tube Fed The images from Tube Fed offer a commentary on the impact of technology on humanity. In particular, I focused on how television and mass media affects both our conscious and subconscious perceptions of the world and ourselves.
