Ph r anen tode m z de-v r ou Lu s st questions: 1) Can you introduce yourself for le negatif readers? 2) When did you feel that you had something to say and the best way to do it was photography? 3) Who are your favorite photographers or artists, the ones that inspire you and also influence your work? Your work: 4) I made my research and i learned that Phantom der lust means Phantom of desire. Why this desire or need to hide your models faces? 5) Would you give a brief walk through your project (that i really like) fa[ce/ith]less and tell us how did it started ? 6) most of your photographs are in black and white. What makes you choose to shot something in B&W rather than color? 7)
What equipments do you use?

Some words for film photographers and lovers?
by jola.l
I am Phantom der Lust. My real name is not worth any mention. I was born in a country that doesn’t exist anymore. I shoot film. I’m just an amateur. For me photography is like a religion: it’s not you who choose it, but it chooses you. You’re not an author. You are just a glove that someone puts on.
My first camera was some Polaroid. It had a shutter button to press and I pressed it- photography was a very simple thing. Now I use a Hasselblad. It is almost the same thing. Now I shoot “3D collages” on glass. This technique was used in Russian animated cartoons, for example in “Hedgehog in the Fog.
Man Ray said: I photograph the things that I do not wish to paint, the things which already have an existence. I know just one thing: how I express myself. in one way or another. Photography offers me the means, more simply and faster than painting. I maintain this point. Besides, I cannot draw.
Once I saw the erotic photographs by Araki and Hosoe and realized that all my life is justified: I saw The Beauty. I regret that I saw photographs by Arthur Tress, Robert Mapplethorpe and Sally Mann so late. Their art is on the same level as the ancient sculptors. Precisely, it’s not an art in the usual sense of the word. It’s almost a myth. It is the mix of different aesthetic values, high and
low genres that inspires me the most. There is no so called “cultural trash”. There is just beauty, whether it is dressed in rags or fine clothes. Every kind of art feeds from the unsatisfied desire, the thirst that cannot be appeased. It is like in 1850 Edgar Allan Poe wrote: “No such combination of scenery exists in nature as the painter of genius may produce”. Half a century later Russian poet Zinaida
Gippius expressed this thought more precisely: “I need something that is not of this world”. That is why an artist embarks on a never ending journey seeking something that does not belong to reality. And if he fails, his desire becomes only a phantom of true feeling, as a ghost in an abandoned house. I shoot ideas, not people. Face is the most intimate
part of human body. Martin Scorsese in interview on Bergman describing Scenes from a Marriage says: “Intimacy is too much, the fear of exposure is too overwhelming”. Intimacy is too much. That is why faces of my models are always hidden. I just invite a spectator to fill the missing part of the photo with his or her own feelings.
Black and white photography shows the essence of things, they look naked. In the absence of color, the hidden mystery appears in material objects. In addition, color requires highest level of mastership one can attain as a photographer. In my opinion, the excellent examples of color imaging are such film movies as Medea (von Trier) and The Color of Pomegranates (Paradjanov).
I’ve never seen Medea until the end, i cannot stand the stress of colors. Film and digital are just mediums that have their pros and cons. But the medium is the message. For me, shooting film is like daydreaming. The light trapped in the film negative reminds of shining from stars extinguished long time ago.
It’s a miracle to hold in your hands a piece of celluloid with a piece of The Past confined in it. The main distinctive feature of film photography is an elegant paradox of film per se: the image of material objects becomes a material object itself.
It’s worth to remember that a picture you made (if it deserves it) will never disappear even if the negative will be loosed or spoiled. It will live in the mind of Spectator as a concept of beauty, passion, fear... Or, if you’re lucky, it becomes something that is not of this world.
“You should shoot only what you can’t resist to shoot.”
