Food Bank Design

We believe

communities & their stories should drive the architecture & engineering design conversation in creating neighborhood spaces where people feel valued.

Our story is simple. Help bring hope and food to our community food banks through innovative and operationally efficient design.

From operational efficiencies, balancing a welcoming environment and privacy, to how people find their way around, we are a fullservice architecture and engineering design firm that has helped food banks/pantries not just act as a resource of food for a customer base that’s doubled since the pandemic, but create neighborhood spaces where people feel valued. This begins and ends with our clients’ mission - to solve hunger.

As a team that prides itself on understanding the unique needs of each food bank and community, our proven planning and design approach is tailored to bring everyone to the table (staff, donors, community, volunteers, key stakeholders, etc.) to create unique spaces that bridge connections to the community by designing environments that help foster and support inclusion and diversity.

The stats to the right provide a high-level overview of what we have accomplished with food and community-based clients nationwide.

Second Harvest Heartland (SHH) distributes nearly 90 million pounds of food and grocery products per year to the Twin Cities Metro and regional communities. LEO A DALY assisted SHH with the design of a new facility that increased capacity for distribution within the region to 150 million pounds a year and incorporated fresh food and produce into their distribution. The project was combined the following main components into one new facility:

25,000 SF Volunteer Center: The space increased capacity to 200+ production volunteers per shift.

10,000 SF Programed Support Spaces: Support the community through governmental program subsidies such as CSFP pick up locations for senior food packages, spaces for SNAP registration and outreach, as well as allow food shelves for individuals to shop.

30,000 SF Office & Support Areas: Supports 200+ employees and 50+ office volunteers.

150,000 SF Distribution Center: The new high pile rack storage distribution center provides five temperature zones.

“Our new facility enables us to not only increase our community connection and meet the extremely fast-growing need for our food resources, but it prepares us to be able to expand our services in the future. The flexible design provides us the space necessary to fully explore innovative ideas such as a commercial kitchen or other food production operations to meet the needs of our hungry neighbors.”

As one of the largest food banks in the nation, Second Harvest of Silicon Valley is a non-profit that works with more than 300 partners at 900 sites to distribute more than 10 million pounds of fresh produce, protein and dairy each month to families in surrounding communities. Before the pandemic, Second Harvest was serving 250,000 people on average every month. After the sharp rise in need due to COVID-19, Second Harvest began serving more than 500,000 people on average per month. This incredible need of the community was met by Second Harvest through temporary operational shifts across their three locations, which is inefficient & uneconomical in managing these food volumes. As a result, Second Harvest engaged LEO A DALY to unify three facilities under one roof to house their new headquarters, client services, distribution, and volunteer center. With more space for food handling and storage, offices, and a dedicated volunteer spaces, the new community-focused food bank will provide increased capacity to allow them to flex when required to respond to future emergencies and disasters.

“LEO A DALY understands that inclusivity of everyone involved in the food banking ecosystem is necessary to achieve the mission – to solve hunger. They understand how complicated and sophisticated food bank operations are and that we are at the center of a much broader regional food distribution network. LEO A DALY has planned and designed a building for us that has brought us to that “WOW” moment. We are confident the new facility will allow us to successfully serve, and be a valuable part of, the community while efficiently fulfilling the basic need of food assistance.”
