T H E K A S P I E V P R I C E C O L L E C T I O N O F H I M A L AYA N A R T LOTS 1–29 1 AN EASTERN TIBETAN GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF DRA LHA KYE CHIGBU CIRCA 18TH CENTURY The cast bronze and gilded wrathful protective deity, one of the five Pehar Kings, depicted wearing a round hat, a short upper garment with flaring sleeves, jewels, his right hand in tarjani mudra where a sandalwood stick attribute would once have been, his left hand curled to clasp another now missing attribute of a cane. He has flaming brows and beard, and is riding a horse through a swirling cloud amidst a rocky mountainous landscape, depicted in the figure’s base of stylised mountains. Remnant traces of pigment can be found on the figure’s face and hat. Base resealed with a later base plate. Unsealed consecration aperture beaneath the belly of the horse, but with intact consecration material within. 13.5cm high, 11.5cm wide PROVENANCE: Christie’s Park Avenue, Indian, Himalayan and Southeast Asian Art (sale 8146), 24 March 1995, lot 70. 2 A TIBETAN GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF STANDING AVALOKITESHVARA CIRCA 18TH CENTURY The deity cast in bronze with fine gilding, depicted standing on his lotus throne, with two hands in anjalimudra, his others in various positions, his smiling principle face flanked by two others, with seven further heads above, surmounted by a diminutive head of Manjushri. He is wearing elaborate jewels, and a scarf flowing to the lowest hem of the dhoti, which stops short of his feet. 3 A TIBETO-CHINESE GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF MAITREYA CIRCA 18TH CENTURY The diminutive finely cast and gilt bronze figure of Maitreya, future Buddha, with a compassionate expression, delicately modelled hands and other features, such as the dharmacakra and kalasa surmounting the lotus blossoms at each shoulder, and the jewels and crown, the figure standing on a single lotus base. Traces of red and green pigment remain on the diadem. Sealed base. 10cm high, 4.5cm wide

5 A TIBETO-CHINESE GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF USHNISHAVIYJAYA CIRCA 19TH CENTURY The cast gilt bronze figure of the eight-armed, threefaced, crowned female longevity Buddha, seated on a double lotus throne, wearing flowing robes and elegant jewels, with large hooped earrings and hair tied in a chignon. 6 A TIBETO-CHINESE GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF GREEN TARA 17TH CENTURY The finely cast figure seated in lalitasana on a lotus throne, with her right leg pendant, the foot resting on a lotus blossom, lotus flowers emerging from both hands and flanking her shoulders, her body in tribhanga pose, right hand in varadamudra and left in vitarkamudra. 7 A RARE NEPALESE GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF RAHU CIRCA LATE 19TH CENTURY The large finely cast gilt bronze depicting Rahu, with the lower body of a serpent and the upper body of a demon with nine wrathful heads, holding a makhara banner symbolising victory over the four maras and annihilation of the five poisons. In his upper left and lower right hand he holds a bow and arrow, and in his lower left hand a snake. The figure wears a cloak made of flayed human skin and a garland of severed heads. 48cm high, 29cm wide PROVENANCE: Purchased from Lynn Cessna of Parkham Place Gallery, Sydney, 2010 $4,000-6,000 8 A TIBETO-CHINESE GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF AMITAYUS CIRCA 18TH CENTURY The finely cast and gilt bronze image of the Buddha of Long Life seated on an unusually high double lotus throne in padmasana, both hands held in his lap in dhyanamudra, wearing crisply cast jewels and a high pointed crown around his tall chignon, surmounted by a flaming cintamani jewel. A long strand of his straight hair hangs down to his waist at the rear of the figure. 18cm high, 9.5cm wide

PROVENANCE: Soo Tze Oriental Antiques, 2008 $5,000-7,000 9 A TIBETAN GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF PADMASAMBHAVA CIRCA 15TH/16TH CENTURY The well modelled figure with a bright, penetrating gaze beneath brows knitted in concentration, with a benign smile. His characteristic hat has an unusual decoration of five heaped ‘norbu’ jewels. He wears heavy pendant earrings on elongated lobes, his undergarment held together at the breast by a jewelled fastening chain, his patchwork outer robe bordered with an incised foliate design around his shoulders. In his gracefully modelled left hand he holds a dorje to his breast, his right hand holding a kapala from which issues jewels in a flame like vapour. He sits in dhyanasana on a later double lotus base. 10 A WESTERN TIBETAN INSCRIBED GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF A KAGYU LAMA 17TH CENTURY Cast in bronze with fine gilding, depicting a Kagyu lama seated in padmasana, dressed in robes with brocade edging and the high hat of the Drukpa Kagyu, his right hand in vitarkamudra, the left folding a manuscript on his lap. The cast bronze figure is seated atop a gilt repousse double lotus throne, with red cinnabar pigment at the top, and an inscription reading ‘/Sri med thugs sras lha tsun (for la btsun) dge’o bkra shis/’, meaning ‘The Most Excellent and Noble Renunciate Lhatsun Who is Inseparable from his Heart-Sons, May Virtue and Happiness Prevail’. 19.5cm high, 13cm wide PROVENANCE: Kitty Higgins, Trocadero Gallery, Washington DC Dr Raul Vispo Collection Soo Tze Oriental Antiques, 2011 EXHIBITIONS: Exhibited in Oglethorpe University Museum of Art, Atlanta Georgia USA, The Many Faces of the Buddha (September-November 1986), pp62, catalogue number 25. Heart brothers refers to those a person is close to in their spiritual practice, particularly students. This image is likely that of the 17th century Sikkimese Lhatsun Jigme Namkha (1595-1650), a Nyingmapa Dzogchen Lama, a Tibetan lama famed for opening up the hidden land of Sikkim to Buddhists as a place to do spiritual practice. $8,000-12,000

11 A WESTERN TIBETAN BRONZE FIGURE OF ACALA OR MANJUSHRI 11TH/12TH CENTURY A beautifully cast small bronze sculpture depicting the wrathful Manjushri or Acala, in a dynamic pose lungeing to the right, with his left hand on hip, holding his diamond sword aloft, wearing a threepointed diadem and other jewels, a finely detailed antelope skin around his waist, standing atop a single lotus base. 12 A CHINESE CHAMPLEVE ENAMELLED GILT BRONZE SYMBOLIC OFFERING QIANLONG (1735-1796) OR JIAQING (1796-1820) PERIOD The symbolic altar offering cast in gilt bronze with champleve enamel details, of one of the seven regal Buddhist symbols, the Queen, here depicted kneeling, her hands before her in anjalimudra, on an elaborate triple-lotus base in Qianlong rococo style, with champleve enamel details, which sits atop a pedestal featuring the character ‘shou’, surrounded by four champleve enamel leaves, which in turn sit above an enamelled cosmic ocean, enclosed within a ruyi-motif pierced gallery border above a double lotus base. 37cm high, 10cm wide PROVENANCE: Soo Tze Oriental Antiques, 1999. 15 A TIBETAN GILT REPOUSSE PANEL OF TANTRIC DAKINIS DENSATIL MONASTERY, CIRCA 14TH/15TH CENTURY The gilt metal repousse panel depicts three dancing dakinis within three vertical stacked circular cartouches bordered by a naga eating its own tail, each dakini brandishing a ritual karthika and a kapala skull cup. 16cm high, 5.5cm wide PROVENANCE: Soo Tze Oriental Antiques, 2014. $2,000-3,000 16 A TIBETAN GILT REPOUSSE DRAGON HEAD CIRCA 18TH/19TH CENTURY The dragon’s head of gilt metal repousse crafted fully in the round, depicted with intense glare, open mouth with bared fangs, golden scales, a green mane with two blunt horns. Considerable original pigment remaining. Together with a fitted perpsex stand. 13cm high, 19cm wide PROVENANCE: Soo Tze Oriental Antiques, 2009. $3,000-5,000 17 A MONGOLIAN GILT REPOUSSE PANEL DEPICTING DORJE LEGPA CIRCA 18TH/19TH CENTURY The protective deity Dorje Legpa is depicted in this gilt metal repousse panel surrounded by clouds of smoke emitted from his fiery bellows, above his vehicle, the goat with entwined horns symbolising the binding together of relative and absolute truths, Samsara and Nirvana. The panel is bordered on either side by human heads depicted in various states of decay. Traces of pigment remain on most of the heads. 25 A TIBETAN BRONZE FIGURE OF AVALOKITESHVARA CIRCA LATE 19TH CENTURY The ungilt cast bronze figure seated in padmasana on a single lotus throne, wearing a five pointed crown, with four arms, two joined in front of his breast in anjali mudra, one holding a lotus blossom aloft, the other holding a mala. 21cm high, 15cm wide PROVENANCE: Soo Tze Oriental Antiques, 1988 $800-1,200 26 A TIBETO-CHINESE BRONZE FIGURE OF VAJRADHAKA CIRCA 18TH CENTURY The figure seated cross-legged on a lotus base, his hands crossed in vajrahumkara mudra holding a ghanta and vajra, the ferocious bearded three-eyed face with open mouth displaying inlaid copper fangs, wearing a tiger skin and beaded jewels. He wears heavy earrings and a skull crown, his headdress with a vajra finial to the rear and hair cascading down his back. Cast bronze, inlaid with copper, coral and turquoise. 10.5cm high, 8cm wide PROVENANCE: Soo Tze Oriental Antiques, 2002 LITERATURE: For earlier examples see: ‘Buddhist Sculptures in Tibet’, Ulrich von Schroeder, 2001, p355, catalogue numer 93E; and ‘Art of the Himalayas: The Zimmerman Collection’, Pal, 1991; and Christie’s New York Indian and Southeast Asian Art 20 March 2002 lot 77. OTHER NOTES: Images of this type are thought to have served as censers and have been associated with fumigation ceremonies and fire rituals. The figure would have sat on a squat bowl which would have contained sand on which the burning incense was placed in order to emanate from the deitiy’s mouth. $3,000-5,000

27 A RARE TIBETAN OR MONGOLIAN BRONZE FIGURE OF TSANGPA KARPO 18TH/19TH CENTURY Finely cast bronze sculpture depicting Tsangpa Karpo riding a horse, wearing a diadem with a conch shell, holding a sword up with his right hand, in the left holding a bowl of jewels to his breast. Remnant traces of gilding, and a sealed consecration aperture in the belly of the horse. Original base missing. 15.5cm high, 14.5cm wide PROVENANCE: Soo Tze Oriental Antiques, 2001 OTHER NOTES: Tsangpa Karpo is also known as the White Brahma, one of the protecting Dharmapalas. He is depicted as a beautiful, brave and intelligent being who can see everything in the three worlds clearly with his third wisdom eye. Sculptures of Tsangpa Karpo are rare, and in thangkas he is usually a secondary or supporting deity. He is popular in Mongolia. $8,000-12,000 28 A TIBETAN BRONZE FIGURE OF PADMASAMBHAVA CIRCA 17TH CENTURY Finely cast bronze depicting a seated Padmasambhava as the guru of medicine, seated atop a tall square plinth. Cast in high relief at the front of the plinth are the eight medicine Buddhas in a stylised rocky mountain landscape. Depicted within a forested mountainscape, with two Kadampa lamas below with a flaming triple gem. Mounted in a later brocade border with a wooden roller. The buyer’s premium is reflected by a reduction in the Seller’s Commission and is a common practice throughout Australia and overseas. Property subject to the Artist Resale Royalty Lots with the § sign will be subject to payment of the Artist Resale Royalty in the event that the lot is sold for a hammer price of $1,000 or more. The Australian Resale Royalty is a flat rate of 5 percent (5%) levy on the hammer price (including GST). The Australian Resale Royalty is payable by the buyer in addition to the buyer’s premium plus applicable GST. Damage Any viewer who damages a Lot will be held liable for all damage caused and shall reimburse Leonard Joel for all costs and expenses relating to rectification of such damage.
Protection of Movable Cultural Heritage Act 1986 (PMCH Act).
