CHINESE WORKS OF ART LOTS 1-84 1 TWO CHINESE NEPHRITE JADE ‘JUE’ SLIT-RINGS EASTERN ZHOU (770-256 BC) OR HAN DYNASTY (202 BC-220 AD) The two rings carved in such a way that one side is smoothly rounded to the edge, and the other side bevelled, with narrow slits to one side. One greywhite, the other yellowish hue. 21 A CHINESE DOCUMENTARY BRONZE CENSER MING DYNASTY (1368-1644), CHONGZHEN PERIOD (1627-1644), DATED 1634/1635 Finely cast in bombe-form with lion mask handles and an eight character mark in relief in seal script inset to the base, translating as “Han home collection. Chongzhen Ixi.” The De Voogd Collection 7cm high, 20.5cm diameter OTHER NOTES: The 7th year of the Chongzhen Era (the year “Ixi”), began on January 29th 1634 and ended on February 16th 1635. The censer is thus effectively dated 1634 or 1635. (Note that many sources inaccurately equate the 7th year of the Chongzhen Era with 1634.) Han was a not uncommon Chinese surname at the time in question, especially in northern and central China. Translation and notes by Ely Finch (2020). $10,000-15,000
22 A CHINESE ARCHAISTIC BRONZE ‘DING’ CENSER WITH JADE-EMBELLISHED HARDWOOD LID QING DYNASTY (1644-1912), 18TH CENTURY OR EARLIER Raised on three cabriole legs with masks, a loop handle emerging from either side, and taotie masks to the front and rear of the vessel, the whole covered in a beautiful verdigris patina. Together with a fitted hardwood stand, and a domed hardwood lid embellished with a jade hat finial carved as a lingzhi mushroom group (probably Ming Dynasty). 33.5cm high, 28cm diameter $3,000-5,000

88 A JAPANESE O-YOROI ARMOR EDO PERIOD (1603-1868), 19TH CENTURY A spectacular example of an O-Yoroi armor. The 18-plate russet iron and silk lined Hoshi-bachi kabuto (star helmet bowl) with protruding o-boshi (large rivet) heads of rounded form in the ancient style, the front and back covered with gilded plates overlaid with shinodare arrows, a three-stage tehen kanamono and copper kasajirushi-no kan (ring for helmet flag). On the front, gilt kuwagatadai and mitsu kuwagata of a spear and stylised antlers, leather-clad fukigaeshi [turnbacks] with gilt mitsu-kiku-ni-maru (family mon) and two-plate itazane manju shikoro (rounded neck-guard). The black lacquered ressei menpo (mask with fierce expression) with impressive hair moustache and gilt teeth with red pigment on the interior, a four-lame yodarekake (throat guard); o-sode (shoulder guards) of hon kozane, Yoshitsune gote (arm guards) in the traditional style and plates joined by soft-metal mail, the do (main trunk armor) of classic hon kozane lamellar, over which hang the sendan and kyubi no ita (armpit guards), the Hodo haidate (thigh guards) also of hon kozane, with a black-lacquered wood saihai (signal baton) of gilt silver paper and silver kanagu fittings, o-tateage suneate (Iron shin guards) with continued gilt mitsu-kiku-ni-maru (family mon) and pair of Kegutsu shoes trimmed with bear fur and lacquered on underside. Contained in a six-legged karabitsu (storage box). 163cm high seated on box OTHER NOTES: O-yoroi was typically a rich man’s armor and mainly worn by higher ranking samurai on horseback. This type of armor flourished during the Heian (794-1185) and Kamakura periods (1185-1333), gradually went out of fashion in the Nanbokucho period (133692), and was revived in the Edo period as per this example. $8,000-10,000

With a rare iron black signature for Totaro on the base, and accompanied by a tomobako (original signed wooden box). Tomobako lid inscription reading “kaki-yu nishaku nagashi mentori kabin Mashiko mingama Totaro” with Totaro’s red seal. 28cm high, 15cm diameter OTHER NOTES: Sakuma Totaro was one of the core potters of the Mingei (folk art) movement, from an old potting lineage in Mashiko. Two lines of formal Tibetan script (U-chen) runs around the front of the ewer stating that the ewer was commissioned for the Tashi Lhunpo monsatery in Shigatse. The inscription reads ‘This vessel made of red sandalwood and its essence, may bring merits to all sentient beings and accumulate the merits and insights, thus leading to the realm of Buddhahood. OTHER NOTES: Warfare in the Trobriand Islands was pursued with long thrown spears (four metres or more in length), wooden clubs, and shields such as these. Before Trobriands men went to war, the village magician would cast a spell over each shield by resting it on his knees, and whispering his spell into the decorated surface, thereby empowering it with his breath. As a result, the shield was thought to become impervious to spears. Damage Any viewer who damages a Lot will be held liable for all damage caused and shall reimburse Leonard Joel for all costs and expenses relating to rectification of such damage. Title Leonard Joel guarantees good title to all lots. Warranties and Condition Reports Condition reports will be available for any lot upon request, subject to conditions. Estimates Estimates are a reflection of Leonard Joel’s opinion of the current market values, based on historic and current market realisations of similar lots. Estimates are inclusive of any GST, which may be applicable. Actual prices at this sale may fall short or exceed the estimates. Payment In any event accounts must be settled with Leonard Joel no later than 4pm two days after the auction. Attention is specifically drawn to condition 21 of the Buyer’s Conditions of Sale. Lots are at the Buyer’s risk from the fall of the hammer. It is strongly advised that overseas and interstate purchasers and absentee bidders make their arrangements with Leonard Joel in advance of the Sale. The PMCH Act regulates the export of
nationally significant heritage objects, it is not intended to restrict normal and legitimate trade in cultural property, and does not affect an individual’s right to own or sell objects, within Australia. The PMCH Act was enacted in response to the 1970 UNESCO Convention on the Means of Prohibiting the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property. It is the responsibility of the Buyer to ensure that the export of any lots purchased are not subject to, or in breach of, this Act.
