Decorative Arts & Asian Art
Our November offering is not only our last for the calendar year, but more meaningfully it is the last we will showcase at 333 Malvern Rd, South Yarra – a building that has been iconically our home for some decades, before we move to our beautiful new space at 1A Oxley Road, Hawthorn. This auction, like many previous offerings, pays homage to the skills and workmanship mastered in clay, glass, silver, bronze, lacquer, stone, gilding and wood, spanning Western and Asian craftsmanship. Our Decorative Arts auction opens with sterling silver tableware including no less than six flatware suites with four of the sets made by Georg Jensen under designs by Johan Rohde being Acanthus, Scroll and the ever popular Acorn pattern (Lots 23-26). Sterling silver features again in our Australian Decorative Arts segment with a wonderful example made by Melbourne silversmith Williams Edwards, being a well cast ewer richly decorated with fruit, flowers and nuts modelled in the Victorian taste, a rare example of his work. Gracing our front cover and the pièce de résistance of the auction is the Italian 15th century painting on panel (lot 140), depicting The Virgin and Child enthroned and crowned by two Angels, with St Francis and St Anthony Abbot. Acquired by the vendor's parents in Italy before they emigrated to Australia in the 1970s, the painting is a true treasure in the Australian market, a rarity not often seen outside Europe. In our Asian Art offering we open with the Douglas Johnston collection of Japanese works of art (Lots 150-181). With a small yet illustrious and dedicated local base of Japanese sword and militaria collectors, it's not often a selection of high quality works are released, and presents some wonderful opportunities to invest. The collection presents sword furniture, tsuba (guards), fuchi (hilt collars) kashira (pommel caps) from the Edo to Meiji period including several pierced sukashi tsuba with NBTHK certification papers as well as multiple menuki (hilt ornaments) in mixed metals, a gorgeous pair of iron and Raden lacquer shell inlay stirrups and delightful set of six lacquer jingasa (war helmets). In addition, an enormous Shibayama inlaid tray with Shogun theme is a tour-deforce of export lacquer from the Meiji (1868-1912) period, reflecting the focus by Johnston in buying quality works throughout his acquisition phase. In our Chinese, Tibetan, South East Asian and Indian works of art, we feature a finely made Chinese censer from the Tang period (lot 238), boldly glazed in blue and amber, and resting on three zoomorphic feet. We look forward to inviting you all to the viewing period for our last fine auction at 333 Malvern Road, South Yarra. chiara curcio head of decorative arts, design & interiors Trevor Fleming Japanese art consultant
