Namatjira’s delicate and refined skill in watercolour highlights both the beauty and severity of the Australian landscape. Riley’s Untitled 1994 (lot 48) is grand in both scale and story. The Ngak Ngak, or whitebreasted sea eagle, is seen fulfilling its role as guardian of the country amongst the rain clouds, a symbol for his mother.

LITERATURE: Lock-Weir, T., Dorrit Black: Unseen Forces, Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide, 2014, p. 180 RELATED WORKS: Houses, Mirmande 1934, oil on canvas 35.2 x 53.3cm, Private collection Study for painting ‘Houses at Mirmande’ 1934, pencil on paper, 18.4 x 26.7cm (sheet), Private collection
Dorrit Black and her mother ventured to London and Europe between 1934-1935, first heading to France in March. They arrived in Mirmande and stayed for more than a fortnight. The bitter cold prevented her from painting so instead she made a series of preliminary sketches which she later finished in England. Black completed at least two major oils of Mirmande based on these sketches. Dorrit’s time overseas during these years reinvigorated her commitment to modern art. This painting is quite likely painted after her second visit to Mirmande in 1934. The brushwork is quite impasto, in line with Dorrit’s later works. The painting has a fragmented and Cubist feel, while the treatment of the trees refer back to the influence of Andre Lhote. $30,000-35,000

Edward Henty, “The Pioneer”, was known as the founder of Victorian settlement. Edward headed to Australia with his brothers and father, Thomas Henty, and eventually settled in Van Diemen’s Land. The aim that they had before them was to breed sheep and produce wool on a large scale, and so the decision was made to seek wider land on the southern edge of the continent. Edward made his way to Portland Bay, Victoria. Sheep were fetched across from Tasmania, pastures occupied, houses erected, land cultivated. At the time of his death Edward and Anna Henty owned upwards of 20,000 acres, with a large area of land under crop. The Henty family legacy is strongly interwoven in the history of Tasmania and Victoria specifically. $10,000-15,000

Together the two brothers developed Walker and Co. engaging in coastal shipping and whaling from their wharf and warehouse at Dawes Point. Walker established himself at Wallerawang in 1824, taking its name from an Indigenous word meaning “place of plenty of wood and water”. In correspondence to the Colonial Secretary, Alexander McLeay, dated 1837, Walker outlines his status: “I beg you will be pleased to submit to his Excellency the Governor’s consideration the following grounds upon which I venture to solicit an extension of my present grant of land of 2000 acres which I received when I first came into this country in 1823, as a free settler. I brought out with me 18 merino sheep (having lost nine on the voyage), a free man as overseer, who is still in my employment, agricultural implements and workmen’s tools to the amount of £200 and I have purchased sheep in this colony to the amount of £1500, and although I suffered the severe loss of upwards of 400 head last winter”. Wallerawang was a sheep and cattle station which also served as a major stop-over location for travellers between Sydney, Mudgee and Bathurst. James Walker continued to build both property and livestock numbers over the following two decades including Loowee (Lue) about 70 miles from Wallerawang, Biambil on the Castlereagh River, Yooloondoory, Coonamble, Barradean, and Mobilla near the Warrumbungle Ranges. $15,000-25,000

This place is marked by two rocks in the centre of the painting. At the bottom of the sea in this area there is a fire burning (Walwaluna) This fire was placed there by the saltwater crocodile (Gadugado). The sea today still boils at this spot. This painting shows two men hunting dugong with a harpoon and paddles. The diamond pattern in the painting is special to the Yirritja moiety. Yirritja ancestors have passed down unique patterns to identify their clans. The pattern here can be identified as belonging to the Madarrpa people by the elongated tail at the end of each row of diamonds the red and yellow represents fire and flames and black and white represent ashes. The central panel contains barramundi and sea grass which the dugong eats. Sea grass is also used to make armbands worn in ceremonies. $1,800-2,800
