Fine Chinese and Asian Art
Our Fine Chinese and Asian art auction features a total of 468 exquisite items spanning various categories of Chinese and Asian art. The majority of these items were sourced from prominent local Australian collectors, including The Estate of Raymond Tregaskis (Lots 31-50), the Reid Family collection from Sydney (Lots 51-58), The Edrina Collection of Chinese Robes (Lots 130-135), The private collection of early Chinese Carvings on Rock Crystal and Agate, Hong Kong (Lots 338-347), Scholar’s Desk and Leisure Objects (Lots 348-387), The Private Collections of Snuff Bottles (Lot 389-427), and other distinguished private collections. The auction presents a diverse selection of Ming and Qing dynasty porcelain, Song ceramics, jade artifacts, and other treasures, each offering a compelling narrative and exceptional quality.
Some selected highlights of this auction include a very rare Chinese imperial doucai dish, Chenghua mark and of the period (1465-1487) restored yet shining brightly, marking a significant piece once handled by Raymond Tregaskis early in his career. Also featured is a very fine Chinese carved cinnabar lacquer rectangular box and cover depicting ‘Elegant Gathering in the Western Garden’ from the Ming dynasty, 15th century, acquired from a prestigious old collection in Japan, portraying lifelike scholars with natural grace. Another standout piece is a large Chinese kingfisher feather hongmu table screen from the Qing dynasty, 19th century, notable for its rare diancui technique and acquired by a prominent Sydney collector in 2012 from Bonhams, showcasing exquisite courtly elegance. Additionally, a rare Chinese Jun Meiping vase from the Yuan/Ming dynasty, 14th/15th century, once owned by Republicanera collector Huang Zijing of Xiaohua Fangzhai and later acquired by Australian collectors Raymond Mitchell & Julian Sterling, stands out as another notable artifact. Furthermore, a rare and fine Chinese doucai vase tianqiuping with a Qianlong mark from the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), acquired from Christie’s London on February 16, 1995, Lot 303, adds to the auction’s prestige. Other highlights include a Chinese ruby-red ground cup with Yongzheng sixcharacter underglaze blue mark from the period (1736-1795), a rare Chinese Longquan Guan celadon glazed vessel (Zhadou) from the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), a rare and large Chinese celadon white jade carved ram-formed archaistic vessel covered Zun from the late Ming/early Qing Dynasty, 17th century, and a pair of Chinese blue and white ‘phoenix’ meiping vases from the Ming dynasty, 16th century.

Collection of Raymond and Victoria Tregaskis
Lot 31-50
When it comes to Asian art, particularly Chinese and East Asian antiques, Raymond Tregaskis (1949-2024) is a name you can't overlook. Ray often joked that his obsession with Chinese and Asian art began in his early 20s with a mistakenly bought snuff bottle. This humble start marked the beginning of a lifelong passion and deep connection with Asian art.
He fancied a bohemian lifestyle, had an incredible memory, and possessed a natural sensitivity to the aesthetics of oriental art. During his extensive travels around the world, he learned from the top Asian art and antique dealers in the UK and visited numerous auctions and museums. This love for art always burned within him, and he eventually achieved recognition as one of the few highly acclaimed Western experts and dealers in Asian art.
In circa 1987, Ray and his wife Vicki founded "Raymond and Victoria Tregaskis Oriental Antiques" in Paddington, Sydney. Over the next half-century, Ray and Vicki tirelessly shared their understanding and appreciation of Asian art with everyone they met. They established widespread recognition of Chinese and Asian art in Australia, nurtured many renowned collectors, and introduced numerous significant Asian artworks into public collections across the country.
I met Ray in 2011, and naturally, we became close friends. Beyond discussing and teaching me about Chinese and Asian art professionally, he was a guiding light in my life— instilling in me the values of seeking truth, being knowledgeable, and maintaining genuine enthusiasm. His teachings have become even clearer to me since his passing.
In honour of his lifelong dedication to Asian art, we have specially curated twenty of his most cherished pieces, forming this unique section. If you ever visited Ray and Vicki's home, you would surely recognize these twenty pieces, once displayed in their living room cabinets, where they were cherished day and night.

A RARE AND FINE CHINESE LONGQUAN GUAN CELADON GLAZED VESSEL, ZHADOU, SOUTHERN SONG DYNASTY (1127-1279)
In the past, this type of Longquan ware would considered to be Guan-type, which were believed to imitate Guan ware in Longquan kilns. However, recent studies have discovered that the Southern Song court had set up kilns in Longquan dayao and xikou to fire tribute wares to the court, as the alternative official kilns to the Jiaotanxia official kiln and Xiuneisi official kiln in Hangzhou. This present Zhadou would be a typical vessel that was made in the official kiln in Longquan dayao for the Southern Song court. For a celadon longquan zhadou, please see Christie’s New York, 22/3/2024, lot 815; also see Christie’s New York, 22/03/2019, lot 1718 for another longquan example.
Compare with a smaller longquan example, in the Zhejiang Provincial Museum, illustrated in Longquan Celadon of China, Hangzhou, 1998, pl.70; another discovered among a group of Song ceramics excavated at Lueyang, Shaanxi province, is illustrated in Wenwu, 1976, no.11, pl.6, fig.5; and a third is included in Chinese Ceramics in the Idemitsu Collection, Tokyo, 1987, pl.474.
See also another zhadou of similar proportions but smaller size, illustrated by R.Krahl, Yuegutang, A Collection of Chinese Ceramics in Berlin, Berlin, 2000, no.226. Fragments of these smaller zhadou recovered from kiln sites at Dayao, Longquan county, Zhejiang Province, are illustrated in Longquan qingci yanjiu, Beijing, 1989, pl.6, fig.5. The latter examples appear to have much greener and slightly inferior crackled glazes.

A FINE AND RARE CHINESE RUBYRED GROUND CUP, YONGZHENG SIXCHARACTER UNDERGLAZE BLUE MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1736-1795)
The exterior of the cup is covered with a ruby-red glaze, has minute spots of varied shades created by the blowing of the glaze onto the biscuit, the interior and the base is covered with a transparent glaze, which has a bluish tinge. The centre is decorated with different fruits in famille-rose enamels. With an old fitted box from Republic period (1919-1949).
The ruby-red glazed monochrome porcelains held a special place among the favourites of the imperial household. Notably, the Yongzheng Emperor presented a mallet vase covered with this exquisite ruby-red glaze as part of his bestowal to Ryukyu. This significant gesture is meticulously recorded in archival documents dating back to the 5th day of the 3rd month of the 10th year (1723).
This distinctive glaze, derived from colloidal gold, imparts a range of captivating hues, from bright pink to purplish red or rose pink. Although its origins trace back to the Kangxi reign, surviving pieces from that era are exceedingly rare. It’s during the Yong Zheng and Qianlong periods that we encounter more frequent examples of this glaze, typically adorning smaller-sized porcelains.
A very similar pair of ruby-red glazed cups, see Qing Imperial Monochromes: The Zande Lou Collection, no.16, pp.66-67. Another similar pair, see Treasures in The Royalty: The Official Kiln Porcelain of The Chinese Qing Dynasty, pp.147. Also see 200 Years of Chinese Ceramics, no.117, pp.111 for a similar cup. Doucai, also known as ‘contrasting colours’ or ‘fighting colours,’ is a prized traditional Chinese porcelain craft, counted among the most valuable types of ceramics. Originating in the Ming dynasty during the Xuande period and popularized in the Chenghua era, doucai ceramics experienced a revival during the Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong periods of the Qing dynasty, producing numerous exquisite pieces. The ‘Nan Yao Bi Ji’ records: ‘Using the underglaze cobalt blue to outline the flowers and birds, then applying the overglaze enamel to complete the entire piece, named doucai,’ marking the earliest mention of doucai.

A CHINESE GILT-BRONZE, CLOISONNE AND CHAMPLEVE ENAMEL WALL VASE, QIANLONG MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1736-1796)
The vase is semi-circular in shape and mounted with a purple sandalwood back panel. Its bronze body is extensively gilded, intricately engraved with banana leaves and continuous vines, adorned with several charming lotus flowers. The centre roundel of the vase is enamelled in blue, featuring a poem inscribed in gold characters: ‘Spring rain washes the delicate petals; numerous layers of crimson clouds overlap. The pair of phoenixes always in the depths of clouds, not letting the flying qiong go to the Ruan family,’ alongside the phrase ‘Imperial production,’ and the seal marks ‘Qian’ and ‘Long.’ Emperor Qianlong had a fondness for plum blossoms and even had a plum garden built for his enjoyment. Among the over forty thousand imperial poems he wrote in his lifetime, two hundred praised plum blossoms, including this well-known one, which subsequently adorned various courtly imperial items.
For an enamel wall vase also from the same period and inscribed with a Qianlong’s imperial poem, see Christie’s Hong Kong, 30/5/2022, lot 2878. 22cm high

During the Qing dynasty, wall vases became highly fashionable. They are documented in records such as ‘Qing Gong Nei Wu Fu Zao Ban Chu Ge Zuo Cheng Zuo Huo Ji Qing Dang,’ where they are referred to as ‘jiao ping,’ ‘gua ping,’ or ‘ci ban yuan ping.’ These vases were known for their diverse shapes and decorations, often inscribed with imperial poetry. These small and exquisite wall vases were particularly favored by Emperor Qianlong, who not only composed poems about them but also ordered the Imperial kilns to produce them in various styles, reaching the peak of their production and use during his reign. This present vase is exquisitely crafted, its bronze body with gilded decoration contrasts vividly with the deep and solemn purple sandalwood back panel. It highlights the noble royal temperament while embodying a dignified and elegant style. The incorporation of the imperial poem ‘Praising Plum Blossoms’ on the vase perfectly showcases its refined artistic taste and transcendent beauty.

The cover of the box is finely carved with Li Gonglin’s ‘Elegant Gathering in the Western Garden’ as its theme, meticulously carving out a scene where numerous literati and scholars gather for leisure. The painting depicts several islands connected by stone bridges, with rugged and peculiar rocks amidst exotic flowers and plants with vigorous branches and roots, imbuing the courtyard with a unique vitality. Groups of literati are seen throughout the garden, enjoying various activities such as admiring flowers, drinking and composing poetry, playing musical instruments, engrossed in chess, studying calligraphy, or engaged in lively discussions. The decoration ‘Elegant Gathering in the Western Garden’ on the cover, originates from the painting of the same name by the Northern Song dynasty artist Li Gonglin. The Western Garden was the mansion garden of Wang Shen, a nobleman during the early years of Emperor Shen Zong of Song. Wang Shen invited contemporary literati and scholars such as Su Shi, Su Zhe, Huang Tingjian, Mi Fu, Qin Guan, Li Gonglin, and the Japanese monk Enchin to gather and enjoy the garden. After the gathering, Li Gonglin created the painting ‘Elegant Gathering in the Western Garden,’ and Mi Fu wrote the inscription ‘Record of the Elegant Gathering in the Western Garden.’Due to the exceptional talents of figures like Su Shi, Su Zhe, Huang Tingjian, Li Gonglin, and Mi Fu, who were rare geniuses of their time, later generations revered them and produced numerous imitations and adaptations. As a result, the theme of the Elegant Gathering in the Western Garden became a common subject in painting, jade carving, and lacquerware throughout history. This square box exhibits an elegant and exquisite design, with a rich and pure lacquer finish and intricate and refined carvings. Particularly notable is the balanced and distinct delineation of the thematic imagery, which unfolds gracefully across the layers of lacquer, showcasing the essence of Ming dynasty lacquer art in a splendid and unrestrained manner.

Qianlong period was renowned as a golden age, where craftsmen excelled in their artistry, striving for perfection in materials and meticulousness in workmanship. The pinnacle of carved lacquer art in the Qing dynasty, particularly during the Qianlong reign, is considered the most representative. During this period, carved lacquer art had evolved distinctly from Ming dynasty styles, featuring sharper patterns and thinner layers of lacquer with a bright red hue. Carved cinnabar lacquer and jade decoration are two renowned gems in traditional Chinese craftsmanship. This box seamlessly combines the essence of both, showcasing superb craftsmanship and deserving its reputation as a masterpiece with significant collectable value.

A LARGE CHINESE KINGFISHER FEATHER HONGMU TABLE SCREEN, QING DYNASTY, 19TH CENTURY
Decorated with real birds’ feathers, including bright turquoise kingfisher feathers, the screen depicts a scene of two pheasants amongst a rocky and floral landscape including large peonies and scrolling daisies, two bats flying about, the whole mostly in dark turquoise with occasional red, the bodies of the two birds in their original colours, all set behind glass in a hongmu frame which is carved with auspicious symbols, as is the hongmu stand.
The gentry favoured exquisite furnishings like this screen, notable for its extensive use of the precious kingfisher feather to recreate scenes inspired by bird paintings. The opulence is heightened by these feathers, which were an expensive and labor-intensive medium. The technique of inlaying feathers, called dian cui (meaning ‘dotting the kingfisher’), involves cutting the feather into shape and adhering it to the base. The feathers’ intense blue colour is due to light reflection, not pigments. The highest quality works used feathers imported from Cambodia, and it is said that Chinese imperial demand for these feathers contributed to the Khmer Empire’s wealth.

A RARE CHINESE LONGQUAN CELADONGLAZED LOBED INCENSE BURNER, SOUTHERN SONG/YUAN DYNASTY
The truncated lobed body supported on three slightly splayed legs, the shoulder with a horizontal rib intersecting vertical flanges associated with the mouth rim stimulating the form of a blooming mallow, rising to a short neck and an everted rim, applied throughout with an unctuous sea-green glaze thinning to a pale green at the ridges, the bottom of each leg left unglazed revealing the pale ware burnt russet-orange in the firing. With a Japanese silver cover and a Japanese wooden box, the cover of the box is inscribed, a Aoyama family collection label on the reverse side of the cover.
The present incense burner, elegantly modelled with an undulating mouth rim to simulate the form of a blooming mallow, is highly unusual. Mallow shape is not uncommon on bowls and dishes, but it is extremely rare to find it on an incense burner. The exquisite bluish-green kinuta glaze as seen on the present vessel was particularly valued in Japan, where the incense ceremony kodo plays a highly important role.

otHer noteS
For over eight centuries, such exquisite Longquan celadon has been revered in both China and Japan, often considered heirlooms passed down through generations or treasures of temples. This phenomenon is particularly prevalent in Japan. The glaze of this piece, rich and non-transparent, smooth as jade, encapsulates the most admired qualities of Longquan celadon glaze. Additionally, its plum-blossom glaze is light and gentle, perceived by collectors as exquisite to the finest detail, yet potters might consider it a challenge. Such superb color and texture can only be achieved through meticulous selection of materials, careful preparation, skillful glazing, and precise firing, making such high-quality works exceedingly rare and precious, embodying the subtle and elegant aesthetic taste of the Song Dynasty. By the Yuan Dynasty, demand for Chinese ceramics in Japan had intensified. It is evident from the numerous heirlooms in Japan that the quantity and quality of imported Chinese celadon and other ceramics were notably high. Tang Dynasty artifacts remained highly sought after in the Yuan Dynasty. Kinze Sadanobu (d. 1333), from a branch of the Kanto-based Hojo clan, mentioned in surviving letters that ‘Chinese ships have arrived, unloading large quantities of Tang items.’ In one such instance, a Longquan celadon lidded jar (used as an urn) was
found in his tomb, a testament to his avid pursuit of Chinese artifacts. His family temple, where his tomb lies, still treasures two large Chinese celadon vases and a large celadon appliqué incense burner.

A RARE AND IMPORTANT CHINESE GREEN GLAZED MOULDED FLASK VASE, NORTHERN QI DYNASTY (550-577 A.D.)
Each side decorated with Huren musicians and dancers. With a fitted box.
This type of flask with moulded decoration was popular in the Northern Qi period, as has been discussed by He Jiying in ‘Xifang yishu dui Wei Jin Nan Song zhao Sui Tang taociqi de yingxiang’, Shanghai Bowuguan Jikan, no. 7, 1966, p. 164. The form and decoration of such flasks are influenced by Central Asian vessels and culture. Four flasks similar to the Falk vessel were excavated in 1971 from a Northern Qi tomb belonging to Fan Cui at Anyang, Henan province. The Henan flasks decorated with a dancer surrounded by musicians, and one is illustrated in Zhongguo wenwu jinghua daquan - Taoci juan, Taipei, 1993, p. 114, no. 401. A further flask of this type is in the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and is illustrated by J. Fontein & T. Wu in Unearthing China’s Past, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 1973, p. 148-9, no. 71. Another version of this form, with wider shoulders and higher foot, is in the British Museum, illustrated by S. J. Blitz Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art, Amsterdam; Collection of Professor Conrad M. Harris, UK, purchased on 30/06/2001 from the above.
Conrad Harris became interested in Chinese pottery in the late 1990s, around the time he retired as Professor of General Practice at Leeds University. Having moved on from a career in medical academia, he took an academic approach to learning about the styles and artifacts of different periods- from the Neolithic to the great dynasties of China. Harris was highly erudite collector, who traveled extensively in China, pursuing his interest in ancient pottery wares through many provincial museums. He gave regular lectures and, in 2002, gained a Diploma in Asian Art from the British Museum. He was an active member of the Oriental Ceramic Society and , in the 2004-2004 Oriental Ceramic Society Transactions, he contributed the lecture ‘Chinese ceramic horses and how they changed’. Most importantly, he gained immense pleasure from seeing his collection take pride of place on the shelves all around his study.

In traditional Chinese culture, the gourd carries highly auspicious and positive symbolism. From its name, appearance, to its characteristics, it holds unique qualities. Since ancient times, it has been a symbol of wealth, longevity, auspiciousness, and peace. Shaped like two interconnected spheres, it belongs to the metal element in the five elements theory. With a narrow mouth and a plump body, it is believed to ward off evil spirits in feng shui practices. Its shape, larger at the bottom and smaller at the top, resembles the Chinese characters for ‘auspicious’ and ‘happiness’. Gourds grow on vines and branches, symbolizing continuous generations and enduring imperial lineage. The gourd itself is robust and adaptable, thriving well, symbolizing many children and blessings, as well as flourishing descendants.
Within this cultural context, various utensils and objects shaped like or themed around gourds have been continuously crafted, becoming immensely popular and respected among both the imperial court and common people.

The conch shell is one of the important ritual instruments in Buddhism. According to ancient tradition, the Wrathful Deity (Achala) upholds the teachings of Buddha received from the original Buddha-mother, wielding a left-turning conch shell to deliver salvation to all beings. Later legends suggest that the left-turning conch is an embodiment of the Wrathful Deity, containing relics of the deity’s remains. Some Vajrayana practitioners regard obtaining such a conch shell as a rare and sacred encounter akin to encountering the Buddha, often reverently placing it prominently at the centre of their tantric altars.

An almost identical perfumier, with fitted zitan stand and cover, sold at Christie’s New York, 23/9/2022, for $63,000 USD. A green jade perfumier of slightly larger size, carved with very similar archaistic scrolls, previously in the Qing Court Collection, is illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Jade Ware (III), Hong Kong, 1995, p. 50, no. 39. Another reticulated greenishwhite jade perfumier of similar size, but with plain T-shaped interlocking elements and similarly carved conforming zitan cover and stand, also from the Qing Court Collection, is illustrated by Yang Boda in Zhongguo Yuqi Quanji (The Complete Collection of Chinese jades), vol. 6, Hebei, 1994, p. 53, no. 85, fig. 1.
5.5cm diameter; 3.5cm high
provenance
A private collection of a scholar.
otHer noteS
The use of perfumiers started in the Tang and Song dynasties, and gained popularity in the Imperial Palace and the noble households as a type of functional decor during the Qing dynasty. Incense or fresh flowers were placed in perfumiers with openings on the sides to emit pleasant aroma in the interior spaces. The present circular white jade perfumier is carved with reticulated, interlocking T-shaped components. This intricate design was known to be an innovation of jade perfumiers during the Qianlong period (1736-1795).

The mouth is capped with a button lid decorated with intricate human face motifs, while the lid itself features a concentric arrangement of linear patterns reminiscent of unfolding flowers, radiating gracefully outward from the central button. The neck is encircled by a band of swirling cloud and thunder motifs, prominently displaying a unique beast face under the protection of a pair of phoenixes, with additional protruding animal heads on either side that originally served as handles, contributing to its ancient and mysterious aura. The protruding belly surface is meticulously carved with vertical ridges that echo the design on the lid, creating a cohesive and harmonious aesthetic.
