Featuring an array of magnificent head turning jewels, seasoned collectors and those new to this category are sure to uncover a captivating piece of jewellery in the upcoming October Fine Jewels auction. As with all our catalogues, the collection is varied and features collectable antiques through to mid-century and contemporary treasures.

We are delighted to present an important antique emerald and diamond locket (Lot 159), with exceptional provenance. The piece can be traced back to the 3rd Countess of Harewood, Lady Louisa Lascelles (nee Thynne) who wears the locket on her wrist in an 1855 portrait of her that hangs in the dining hall of Harewood Hall, Yorkshire. Coming to the market for the first time, this presents an incredibly rare opportunity for collectors to acquire a unique piece with aristocratic lineage.

We are pleased to feature a large collection of superlative jewels from international houses including Cartier, Paspaley, Tiffany & Co, Bulgari, Van Cleef & Arpels and Georg Jensen. Highlights include a suite of jewellery from the Paspaley ‘Marquise’ collection, which juxtaposes tanzanite with high lustre Paspaley pearls and dazzling diamonds (Lots 112 through to 115 ). Designed and released in 2010 to celebrate Paspaley’s 75th year, the collection re-imagines the marquise motifs so popular in the 1930s and seamlessly leads them into the contemporary era. Also of note are the playful brightly coloured Bulgari ‘Elisia’ designs (Lots 106 to 108) and the elegant and understated ‘Trinity’ collection by Cartier (Lots 190, 192, 245 & 246).

For collectors of rare and exceptional gemstones, several important diamonds feature including an impressive 5.26 carat diamond ring (Lot 133), as well as an elegant 2.46 carat emerald-cut diamond ring accompanied by GIA certification stating the diamond is D colour and Internally Flawless (Lot 258).

As always, it has been a pleasure to curate and present this diverse collection of impressive and collectable jewels, we look forward to assisting you with selecting a special piece (or two) to add to your collection.

9CT GOLD, SILVER EMERALD AND DIAMOND LOCKET

Provenance: Lady Louisa Thynne, 3rd Countess of Harewood, thence by descent to the current owner $15,000-20,000

Harewood House in West Yorkshire has been the seat of the Lascelles family since the late 18th century. Designed by architects John Carr and Robert Adam for The 1st Baron Harewood Edwin Lascelles, Harewood House was created in the Palladian style, with classical features and an emphasis on stately symmetry. Construction of the house took place between 1759 and 1771.

Henry Lascelles was the 3rd Earl of Harewood, born in 1797. A British peer and member of parliament, he married Lady Louisa Thynne, the daughter of Thomas Thynne, 2nd Marquess of Bath, on the 5th of July 1823. No major renovations took place at Harewood House until Henry Lascelles increased the accommodation in the 1840’s, in part due to the fact that he and his wife had fourteen children together.

An 1855 portrait of Louisa Lascelles by English painter George Richmond currently hangs in the dining room of Harewood House. It portrays the formidable matriarch in a black gown, accented with a red paisley shawl. In the scene, she gestures towards the impressive Italian style terrace that she commissioned Sir Charles Barry to design as part of the 1840’s renovations. On her wrist is a bracelet which suspends the heart shaped emerald and diamond locket that has been passed down through the family.
