Known as the Atmos clock this timepiece is considered the ultimate fusion of science and clock making. Powered neither manually nor by battery this exquisite mechanism feeds off minute changes in temperature and atmospheric pressure. The design is so carefully calibrated that it can run for years without interference. Although examples of “atmospherically” run clocks date back to the 17th century, it was not until the second quarter of the 20th century that the mechanism was refined to enable significant production. Today more than 500,000 such clocks inhabit the homes and offices of the world!

THE GEOFFREY HATTY COLLECTION OF APPLIED ARTS
AN IMPORTANT MODERN DESIGN SINGLE-OWNER COLLECTION
The Geoffrey Hatty Collection of Applied Arts AUCTION SUNDAY 8 NOVEMBER AT 2PM 32 Years ago a modest and unassuming individual recognised the extraordinary and the special in 20th century design. He set about quietly and intelligently communicating the importance of the Modern period and its Interiors into Australia. The Rise of the New Collector, Again On an international antiques website, I recently stumbled across a 1920s Louis Vuitton trunk/desk. The asking price was more than $100,000 and it occurred to me that at time of manufacture, it would not have been considered either significant or collectable but regardless, someone loved it enough to commission its manufacture. Such is the nature of things that we retrospectively imbue monetary value with – it is often not until time, scarcity and condition have taken their toll on what remains that we decide something is special and worthy of being a “store of value”. At our recent designer luxury auction similar collecting dynamics played out although it was refreshing to see young “collectorators” (the new hybrid collector/decorator) again deciding to imbue elegance and quality manufacture with value before the imprimatur of some authority on what should or should not be deemed collectable. This Ralph Lauren trunk of contemporary manufacture was just such an example and realised $4,880 (IBP).

BRINGING HOME THE BIRKIN AUCTION SATURDAY 12 SEPTEMBER AT 1PM
In Michael Tonello’s 2008 best seller ‘Bringing Home the Birkin’, he tries to dispel the myth that there is any kind of wait list for the coveted Hermès Birkin bag. If so, why is it so hard for most of us to get our hands on one? For more than twenty years, the Hermès Birkin bag has been the iconic symbol of fashion, luxury, and wealth. Michael is a master storyteller who weaves together tales of hunting Birkins in the world’s most prestigious locales and boasts at visiting over one hundred Hermès stores, stalking and catching his prey. It is great to have the time and money for this type of globetrotting, but if you don’t, and (let’s face it - we are all pretty time poor these days), why not just jump the que and pick one up at auction? We regularly sell Birkins as well as a wide range of other luxury items at Leonard Joel. Why not make this beautiful 35cm Black Togo leather Birkin yours? Jewels, Objets D’Art & FINE ASIAN ART AUCTION SUNDAY 15 NOVEMBER 2015
A CONTINENTAL SILVER AND ENAMEL CIGARETTE CASE, CIRCA 1925
This clock, lavishly decorated with inlaid tortoiseshell, is a fine example of the lengths 18th century furniture and cabinet makers would go to embellish these impressive timepieces. The inlay technique found its high point with cabinetmaker Andre Charles Boulle who’s surname was later adopted to describe this artistry. From a young age Boulle enjoyed the attention of monarchs and was regularly commissioned by nobility, ministers and financiers.
