A jewel in Melbourne’s crown: a reflection by Lerida Tinalley String Quartet recently learnt that on February 10th, Melbourne jeweller, Kozminsky, will be closing its doors for the final time. Many musicians will remember that before we purchased sheet music online (or downloaded it from IMSLP) we would visit a Melbourne institution, Fine Music. Tucked upstairs, down a little obscure lane connecting Bourke Street and Little Collins, McKillop Lane, Fine Music was a treasure trove of freshly pressed editions of Barenreiter, Henle, Sikorski or (excessively priced) Durand. The excursion was also an opportunity to browse the magnificent window displays of a jewel in Melbourne’s crown, Kozminsky. Immersed in the hustle and bustle of Bourke Street, the store was a reminder of the elegance of yesteryear… I remember when the Quartet had been accepted to compete in both the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition and the Banff International String Quartet Competition, two major competitions scheduled within weeks of each other, we suddenly realised that we needed performance 200 A VICTORIAN GOLD BRACELET $2,200 - 3,200
practise. The cost of venue hire, advertising, ticketing… after several hours of brainstorming in Justin’s bachelor pad, he suddenly said ‘What about the jeweller, you know, the one with the amazing store near Fine Music, Kozminsky?’ I was sceptical. But we rang and I spoke with Kirsten Albrecht. Kirsten immediately said, ‘Why don’t you come in this afternoon and I’ll speak with you about it?’ I remember vividly that it was a scorching Melbourne day, I arrived in my little summer dress, and after years of gazing through the glass, I entered the store for the first time. Kirsten sat me down, listened to Tinalley’s story (at that time, we had been together 4 years) and after conferring with her brother Ben, came back and said, ‘How about $5000?’ I was stunned.
I felt
like Kirsten had just offered me a million dollars. That was the beginning of a wonderful association that Tinalley has been privileged to enjoy for ten years. The Kozminsky ‘door’ was always open. Michelle and I were loaned jewels for international tours, photo shoots and special events. Kirsten and her wonderful staff helped us organise sumptuous events in the upstairs gallery celebrating Tinalley’s achievements and unveiling new chapters in Tinalley’s life. In fact, in truth, the only reason why Adam and Justin are married is because of the magnificent rocks they presented their wives when the question was popped… 282 A SUFFRAGETTE AMETHYST, PEARL AND ENAMEL RING $1,000 - 1,800
rings selected under the discerning gaze of Kirsten! But what is extraordinary about the relationship between Kozminsky and Tinalley, is that we shared a passion and a vision. Kozminsky listened to Tinalley’s story and wanted to be a part of its next chapter. And Kozminsky went above and beyond in its efforts to support Tinalley. Ten years later, I realise how rare that support is. When Kozminsky closes its door, Melbourne will not only lose an iconic link to the heady days of sophistication and elegance, but a rare jewel in the modern world.

Full Circle Since the announcement of the Kozminsky auction with Leonard Joel and our imminent move from Bourke Street, we have experienced a flood of emotion. Clients well known to us, and people who have walked by for many years have come in to wish us well. It has been overwhelming and humbling. Working day to day it is easy to become blasé to the beauty that surrounds us. It has helped me to understand afresh what our business means to Melbourne and the wider community. “A special occasion” is the phrase used most often to describe the reason for a visit to Kozminsky. This auction is indeed a special occasion. John Albrecht, Managing Director of Leonard Joel, and John D’Agata National Head of Jewellery are both responsible for this unique collaboration. So we have come full circle. It’s wonderful to again work beside my brother John, creating beauty in the distinct Kozminsky style, that has woven itself into the fabric of Melbourne. labour-intensive techniques, which made the jewellery expensive. Lot 2, our cover piece, is a fine example of jewellery from this romantic period. Our beautiful diamond pendant, centred with a cushion cut diamond of 2.30ct, suspended within a pierced bow, floral and foliate fitting set with rose and single cut diamonds, has all of the attributes of the jewellery produced in this short era. There are many other special selections in this first Fine Jewellery catalogue for the year. Of note, from a slightly later period, lot 9, the swagged Art Deco 3.05ct diamond earrings and lot 10, the impressive Art Deco 5.35ct solitaire diamond ring, come to mind. As with all of our catalogues, the jewellery selection is varied and we are proud to showcase a variety of different styles including designer, modern and antique jewels. Lot 15, a gold

The auction includes extremely rare gold Sycamore and Splash necklaces by Georg Jensen, at lots 390 and 396 respectively. The Feminine Equation As we enter the Year of the Rooster, in what some may view as auspicious, Leonard Joel’s first 2017 Fine Art sale sees women coming up trumps. Our front cover features Clarice Beckett’s mesmeric Yacht at Sunset c.1928 whom despite a dearth of support from her male peers, painted continuously throughout her life, albeit mostly in the shadows. Timely recognition only came after her death when Rosalind Hollinrake, (then Humphries) in the 1970s granted Beckett’s her work the exposure it long deserved and set her place as one of Australia’s most significant modernists. By contrast, an artistic sisterhood was more readily available and nurturing to artists Dorrit Black and Ethel Spowers who are represented in this sale by two uncommon works.
Black’s
contemporaneous wartime era scene, At the Cafeteria c.1943 is notable as a monochromatic rendering and also for being an inverse representation of this image. Spowers’ The Rocking Horse 1927 is a thrilling discovery as it is not too often that ‘ghostly’ works, known but largely unseen, come to light. This the first to appear at auction and it is speculated that Spowers never released it as an edition, enticing further research. The dark horse in this sale may indeed be Ina Gregory, an artist inspired by esotericism and who is represented by eleven works 114 TIM SCHULTZ (born 1960) Margravine Venus 1997 oil on canvas 111 x 98.5cm $3,500-5,000
that showcase her focus on portraiture, landscape and spiritualism. With only a handful of works ever brought to auction and perhaps better known by some for her close connections with Impressionist Jane Price, this spotlight may raise the veil higher and grant more context to her oeuvre –the lure of further discovery beckons. The march of women continues on the other side of the fence with The Collection of a Lady forming the preeminent collection in this sale. Brimming with classic and handsome landscapes by Adrian Feint and Kenneth Macqueen, nocturnal scenes also clearly found firm favour evidenced by Arthur Streeton’s purple-hued Night Scene 1890 and David Davies Day’s End, both of which featured in the Ballarat Art Gallery’s 1974 celebrated exhibition, Moonrise. At the Contemporary end of the spectrum is another edition from Jan Nelson’s series Walking in Tall Grass depicting a female subject, Iris after our September offering of Viktor. Close to a century after Beckett, Nelson may still work in an environment where male artists are predominant however it is no longer a game of masters and apprentices between the genders as opportunities and expectations are thankfully more evenly matched. The (re)contextualising of twentieth century women artists has certainly been a welcome trend of the last decades, however in the future these acute and timely re-evaluations will probably not occur as readily or be required in this more level playing field. Already auction indications are encouraging – look no further than our recent sale of Patricia Piccinini’s Cyclepups: Firestarter which along with Ben Quilty’s offerings belong to the currently small clique of Contemporary works that have matched

Red; the colour that stops us everywhere. At the traffic lights. The colour that renders a visit to the Grand canyon awe-inspiring and Uluru mesmerising. And here we showcase its extraordinary effect in the decorative arts and it’s no surprise that so many of these pieces find their origin or inspiration from the orient, where the colour is synonymous with good fortune and happiness.

‘Man of flowers’
A little over thirty years ago when I was still living in the Dandenong ranges, I saw one of our local shops selling huge generous bunches of mixed Perennial flowers. They were irresistible for a still life artist’s subject matter... I inquired as to where they had come from, to be told that David Glenn had grown them at his nursery. I knew neither the man or the nursery, but went on to paint the beautiful specimens, and to then produce a card of the painting titled Cottage Flowers. I sent the card with a thank you to David Glenn,

which he mysteriously never received. About twelve months later a friend who knew David suggested she introduce us, and I could obtain more of his flowers for my paintings.

We met, fell in love, married, and twenty-nine years later this ‘man of flowers’ still grows almost all the flowers that grace my still life paintings.... Criss Canning

The shock of the estimate It is always the moment when an auctioneer and potential seller determine whether there is a meeting of minds, more discussion to be had or a parting of the ways. That moment is when we auctioneers advise a prospective seller what we believe their treasure or collection will sell for at auction. Others describe it as that perpetually reoccurring moment when we auctioneers let the client down. The crux of these discussions is always about what the seller expects an item is worth in the face of advice that it is in fact worth far less. Often the seller interprets this moment as a lack of interest or knowledge on the part of the auctioneer but 99 out of 100 times it is neither. It is simply the difference between the retail or gallery price that a seller has in his or her head and the reality of a secondary market price free of retail margins that the auctioneer knows well is what “the market” will pay for something once it has left the retail establishment, the gallery, the dealership with a margin or the retailer of the brand new. It is a moment and sometimes a minibattle between auctioneer and prospect that plays itself out throughout the world, at every auction and every day of the year and no category, period or material is impervious to this moment. And how I wish this moment could be solved by some clever people-person that could invent a turn of phrase, a slick explanation or a warm-hearted response that could pierce the seller’s suspicion like a diamond bullet and generate a revelation, a revelation that the auctioneer does know pricing, does not wish to buy the item for a bargain and actually wants what they the seller want, the best price possible. But alas, that invention continues to evade the auctioneer and in the meantime I will continue to refine my explanations, my humour and my empathy in the hope that one day the perfect explanation will emerge!
