Asian offering pivots to Japan in May The upcoming May auction sees a strong offering of Japanese works from 18th Century EDO times to the modern period. There is a rich history of collecting Japanese works in Australia and whilst it is an area that has been recently overshadowed by Chinese antiques, it is beginning to rise again as quality works come to market and find new custodians. Sydney Highlights Of particular note in the Sydney offering is the collection of Japanese historical and modern studio ceramics. Savvy collectors will have the opportunity to acquire multiple high quality export Imari ware works as well as a range of contemporary pottery and celadon pieces that would fit in any modern setting.
Melbourne Highlights The showpiece of the Melbourne sale is the famous album of woodblock prints, One Hundred Aspects of the Moon, by Ukiyo-e Master, Yoshitoshi Tsukioka. It is incredibly rare to find complete albums given the many natural disasters and the calamity of WWII. In addition, we are pleased to offer a beautiful collection of high quality Satsuma works as well as museum quality Edo and Meiji period lacquerware amongst many other treasures. Trevor Fleming, Japanese Art Specialist

CLOCKS 160 THE GRAND COMPLICATIONS TABLE CLOCK* BY JOSEF (JOSEPH) RUETSCHMANN (1755-1801) An exceptionally rare Viennese eight day scarlet tortoiseshell and ormolu mounted table clock, circa 1770, triple fusee, with perpetual calendar, full calendar moon phase, Grande Sonnerie striking, with multiple dials and apertures, 66cm high $60,000-100,000 VIEW IN MELBOURNE
36
The Grand Complications Table Clock, Circa 1770 JOSEF (JOSEPH) RUETSCHMANN (1755-1801), VIENNA Clockmaker: Josef (Joseph) Ruetschmann was born in 1755. In June 1786, Ruetschmann was named a Viennese master, and worked alongside his partner David Ruetschmann (Frater David a Sancto Cajetano) (1726–1796); both well known for their complicated bracket clocks with perpetual calendars. Ruetschmann later died in 1801. Little is known about Ruetschmann or his work, which only emphasises the importance of this clock for collectors of astronomical and complicated clockwork. Case: A waisted scarlet tortoise shell case beneath a structured pediment with a classical female finial. Elaborate ormolu mounts and cut brass inlay overall, above decorative rococo inspired bracket feet. With a glass panelled door to front and rear, and two glass panels on each side of the case. Typical of an Austrian clock of this period, the case is elaborately decorated in baroque inspired ornamentation. Height: 66 cm high Chapter ring, auxiliary dials and indicators: The central enamelled chapter ring is surrounded by seven auxiliary dials, each with iron and gilt brass hands. All the dials are set into a pierced and engraved ormolu plate with four decorative bird spandrels. Set within the chapter ring is a semicircular plaque bearing the clockmakers mark ‘Joseph Ruetschmann in Wien’. The three upper dials are set into a shaped and floral engraved ormolu plate. The first dial is a highly detailed perpetual calendar segmented into four quarters representing each month in the first three common years, and the final quarter for the leap year, all listed in the clock’s native German language. Above this dial is a semicircular aperture representing the days of the month. The thin gilt brass hand indicates the date and the iron hand indicates the month and year. Beneath the perpetual calendar are the 24 hour dials and moon phase dials. The 24 hour dial bears the hours in Roman and Arabic numerals with the
central inscription of ‘Talicum Horologium’ translating to hour calculator, and a single iron hand to nominate the hour. The moon phase dial lists the 29 ½ days of the months moon phase, also with a single iron hand. Flanked by these two said dials is a recessed reserve with a rotating two tone spherical moon. Beneath the moon phase, 24 hour dial, and the perpetual calendar is the large chapter ring. The latter lists the following measurements: hours in Roman numerals, minutes in Arabic numerals, days of the week in the German language, and seven astronomical symbols. Each of the four iron hands in the chapter ring is designated for the four measurements. Set into the centre of the chapter ring is a pierced wreath decorated ormolu plate with a small semicircular aperture for the mock pendulum bob in the form of a paste brilliant. The name plate and the three key holes are also housed within the centre of the chapter ring. At each corner surrounding the exterior of the chapter ring are four auxiliary dials designed for the following functions: rise and fall; Grande Sonnerie; maintaining power lever and Grand Petit. Each of these subsidiary dials has a single iron hand. Movement: An eight day, three train, triple fusee movement with verge escapement and Grande Sonnerie striking (quarter striking with repeater). Perpetual calendar with fly back monthly indicator, full calendar moon phase, with rotating moon and twenty four hour dial indicator & day indicator with zodiac hand around dial. Complication: Any complication in horology refers to any mechanism not involved with regular time keeping or striking movements. In this example the complex calendars, and astronomical features deem it to be a rare example of a grand complication.
