53 (Opposite Detail) EMANUEL PHILLIPS FOX (1865-1915) Young Girl oil on board signed lower left. e.PHILLIPS Fox 34 x 25.5cm PROVENANCE: Christie’s, Melbourne, 20 April 1993, lot 171 as Head of a Child $12,000-16,000 Young Girl was likely a study for a child in one of Phillips Fox’s famous domestic scenes of women and their daughters, for which he was particularly well known. Preferring to paint his subjects indoors, the viewer is provided a glimpse of a window frame, surrounded by the lush shades of green in the background and turquoise of her shirt. The girl’s peach-toned face is pensive, in keeping with the style of many of the artist’s female portraits. This study showcases the foundation of Phillip Fox’s art practice. The love of cool colours, displayed against the warmth of pinks and beige tones form the evocative, meditative blend of most of his paintings. With thanks to Dr. Helen Topliss.

“The Flinders gave Heysen objective reasons for suggestions of modernism to enter his work: atmospheric perspective was replaced by clear, hard, flat shapes […] and starkly contrasting colours” IAN NORTH
49 HANS HEYSEN (1877-1968) Summer Lights, Flinders Ranges 1933 oil on canvas signed and dated lower left: HANS HEYSEN 1933 60 x 86cm PROVENANCE: Leonard Joel, Melbourne, 12 April 1989, lot 34 Sotheby’s, Melbourne, 08 April 1990, lot 55 EXHIBITED: Possibly shown in One Man Exhibition, Newspaper House, Perth, 1933 RELATED WORK: The Wilpenas from Etina c.1931-33, oil on canvas, 61.6 x 91.8cm, signed and dated lower right: HANS HEYSEN 1933 in North, I., Heysen, Macmillan and Art Gallery Board of South Australia, SA 1979, cat. 59, p.64 $70,000-90,000 © Hans Heysen. Licensed by Viscopy Ltd. Australia
The German-born painter Hans Heysen (1877-1968), one of Australia’s most influential artists, migrated here in 1884 with his family and quickly embraced the wild and rugged landscape of his new home. He began painting at the age of fourteen and from 1929-1933, he made the Flinders Ranges one of his major subjects. Heysen had first visited the region three years earlier and was fascinated by the archaic nature of the landscape, and the barren hills that were in stark contrast to the gentle Hahndorf scenery where he and his family had settled. He claimed that the mountains folded in on themselves, (in fact one of his paintings is called Folding Hills) frozen and were like waves. The Flinders Ranges inspired Heysen to reject the lush landscapes depicted by other Australian artists such as Elioth Gruner and Arthur Streeton.
Whereas Streeton’s “Australia Felix” proclaimed the pastoral wealth of Australia, Heysen developed an antithetical view and chose to paint the region during the drought season of which Summer Lights, Flinders Ranges 1933 is a magnificent testament. At the time, critics described this series of paintings as representing the “bare bones of landscapes”. For Heysen, it was inspiring to paint the mountain subject in sculptural terms set against the brilliant blue sky and vivid yellow ochre and red colours of the arid land. Importantly too, Summer Lights, Flinders Ranges symbolises Heysen’s growing awareness and acknowledgement of the Aboriginal presence which added depth and gravitas to his understanding of the ancient land. With thanks to Dr. Helen Topliss.

A member of the Bombay Progressive Artists Group, Husain’s style, heavily influenced by the cubist movement, became synonymous with modern Indian art. Widely regarded as the ‘Picasso of India’, MF Husain’s prolific career spanned decades, with the artist producing upwards of 40,000 complete works throughout his lifetime. While he was one of the most prolific artists of the twentieth century, his self portraits are not as widely circulated, and are considered harder to come by.
