Licensed by Viscopy Ltd. Australia
For Charles Blackman the early sixties were an inspirational time. He and Barbara were living in London which offered them “a doorway to real ”handmande works of art, to contemporary literature and theatre, and to the richness of the European tradition .”1 Here they were closely entwined with a vibrant circle of writers, poets, academics, actors and artists and had ready exposure to the masters of art history from Eugène Delacroix to Paul Klee to David Hockney. Christabel at the Table belongs to this fecund period where Blackman was noticeably drawn to an exciting “mixture of techniques – collage, cut-outs, scribbling, painting over…”2. Literature continued to be his guiding muse and the writings of John Shaw Neilson, in particular his poem ‘Schoolgirls Hastening’, that spoke of “the schoolgirls hastening through the light to touch the unknowable divine”3 found new ways to influence him. Neilson’s poetic references to darkness and light found voice here as a powerful and assertive dance between the positive and negative. In a swirling moment we are at once reminded of Ben Nicholson’s muted tones, of Mark Rothko’s spirit and abstract language that stirred human emotion, and the monochromatic palette and force of Franz Kline. The concept of the apparition is also ever present; it starts with the subtle form of a ghostly chair through to its formidable expression in the drawn figure of Christabel, who is partly obscured behind a thick black pillar with a further outline of her head reverberating behind. Her clasped hands, too, reappear as ghost-like punctuations behind punchy white rectangular blocks. Other interesting pictorial and perceptual devices are also at play; the lower half of the painting disappears into the canvas through a series of drips and bleeding and Blackman adopts collage to define the table edge and then reverses the concept by creating raised edges along the black column to suggest the collage form. The dialogue between the positive and negative that courses so strongly throughout Christabel at the Table reveals not only Blackman’s ongoing interest in human mystery, it also creates a strikingly graphic and uncommonly contemporary composition for Blackman that imbues it with a manifest gravitas. MIRKA MORA (1928-2018)
“Mirka’s art reminds us poignantly of the power of love, loss, laughter, discovery and invention. Her uncanny creations convey a sense of the innocence and wonderment of childhood while playing knowingly on adult dreams, desires, fears, and fantasies. To enter her world is to enter a realm of enchantment in which nothing is quite what it seems and anything is possible.” KENDRAH MORGAN, SENIOR CURATOR AT HEIDE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART

JOHN BRACK
104 JOHN BRACK (1920-1999) Portrait of Helen 1959 conté on paper signed and dated lower right: John Brack 59 39.5 x 30.5cm PROVENANCE: Private collection, Canberra $40,000-50,000 © Courtesy of Helen Brack
Portrait of Helen is executed with the same sharp observation that defined John Brack’s iconic paintings of the 1950s (famously Collins Street, 5pm 1955). His representation is without sentimentality but it is not without kindness or awareness. The spare artistic style draws the viewer into the work to closely discern the sitter; a women of strength with a sharp intellect and frank determination. She is disinterested in the viewer’s gaze, absorbed in her own thoughts. In describing his approach to painting a woman, Brack stated: “I am not interested in how she looks sitting in the studio, but in how she looks at all times, in all lights, what she looked like before and what she is going to look like, what she thinks, hopes, believes and dreams.” Portrait of Helen is a compelling picture, the conviction of which lies in Brack’s intimate knowledge of the sitter, his wife and fellow artist Helen Maudsley.

JOHN OLSEN
65 JOHN OLSEN (born 1928) The Coorong 2006 oil on board signed and dated lower right: John Olsen 06 signed and dated verso 91 x 95.5cm PROVENANCE: Metro 5 Gallery, Melbourne Private Collection, Melbourne EXHIBITIONS: John Olsen: The Coorong - Unfinished Journey, Metro 5 Gallery, 6 September - 1 October 2006, (illus.) LITERATURE: Zimmer, J., and McGregor, K., John Olsen: Journeys in the ‘You Beaut Country’, Macmillan, Melbourne, 2007 $70,000-90,000 © John Olsen. Licensed by Viscopy Ltd. Australia
In the 1970’s Olsen was involved in the “Wild Australia” film series which enabled him access to environments normally restricted to the public. It was at this time he had his first key experience in South Australia’s Coorong region, a “soul place” as he called it, which the artist continued to draw inspiration from for years to come. By November 2003, Olsen (along with David Dridan, Ken McGregor, and Jeff Makin) prepared for a painting trip to the Coorong. Olsen wrote at the time, “The Coorong itself – that long silt of salty water, a neglected soul landscape, walled in by sandhills. Huge skies […] emphasised by the flatness of the landscape.” Many of the works completed on this trip were completed in 2005-6 and contributed to an important series of paintings and numerous print editions. Cooyong 2006 displays the rich and vast emptiness found in the South Australian landscape, where the large sections of water and land intersect. The pure blue water takes the viewer to an Australian oasis, where Olsen’s animated brushwork depicts the colony of pelicans in their natural habitat that the artist was so fortunate to observe first-hand.
