Since 1981 Imants Tillers has used his signature assembled canvas boards to explore themes relevant to contemporary Australian culture. Most recently, his body of work reveals a vast and intricate web of connections across time and place. “…issues of locality and identity have become uppermost in my mind and have made their presence felt in my recent work, not as literal representations of landscape, of the grass, hills, sky, clouds or rocks around me, but as evocations, through text and other layered visual elements.” When Locality Prevails, Heat¸ no.8, Giramondo, Sydney, 2004, p. 114 Tillers now regards his works to be as much word poems as paintings. Painted in blue around the edge of the work are words by poet Stéphane Mallarmé, who Tillers has cited in almost every work he has made since the late 1990s: “a throw of the dice will never abolish chance”. It references the concept of chance happenings but also to Mallarmé’s experiments with typography as a visual representation of his poems.

THE MR ALUSH ABAZI COLLECTION
Mr Abazi, or “Bidder 11”, as he was referred to by Leonard Joel auctioneers, was an enthusiastic collector of paintings, sculptures and antiques. The obsession began in Europe in the 1970s-80s. As Director of the Yugoslavian Swimming Federation, my father travelled to several Olympic Games and World Championships. He would take these opportunities to purchase paintings from abroad. In fact, he never returned empty-handed. The war in Kosovo in 1989 signalled the abandonment of a comfortable life, all possessions and the beginning of a new course in Australia. It was in the rooms of Leonard Joel that my father cut his teeth on Australian art. Mr Abazi took great pleasure in carefully arranging a fine collection of French and Australian art. He collected paintings, not painters. Indeed, the most important lesson my father taught me was to judge a work of art first on its merits and not its creator. Although I may have had an upper hand on dates, names and terminology, I could never match his remarkably sharp eye. Thus, my self-taught and self-made father, earned the compliment Cezanne once paid to Monet: “Il n’est qu’un oeil, mais, mon Dieu, quel oeil!” (“It is one eye, but my God, what an eye!”) Gregarious, witty, charming and erudite Mr Abazi was a collector’s collector who was proud to call Leonard Joel his second home. The sincere relationships he formed with the staff in all departments were unique and long-lasting. For this, we are proud that Leonard Joel will be offering a selection of his collection in numerous auctions throughout the year. Petrit and the Abazi family

161 SCHOOL OF GEORGE BELL (20th Century) Still Life oil on artist’s board unsigned inscribed in pen on backing verso: GEORGE BELL 1950/ MELBOURNE 48 x 37.5cm PROVENANCE: The Estate of Neil Robertson RELATED WORK: George Bell, Still Life, oil on board, signed lower left, 48 x 39 cm, GFL Fine Art, Perth, 8 May 1995, lot 79 $2,000-3,000
In 1932, Arnold Shore and George Bell, an established art critic, founded the Bell-Shore School in Melbourne. The school was an important influence on the development of modernism in Melbourne, promoting Post-Impressionism and particularly the principals established by Paul Cezanne. Shore’s appreciation for modernism was absorbed from European books and magazines; he never left Australia. Perhaps for this reason Bell’s influence as a teacher was stronger, looking to the British school of PostImpressionism during an extended study trip to England. Corner of the Studio 1934 was painted the year before the partnership between Shore and Bell dissolved. The ordinariness of the still-life painting, which gave prominence to abandoned and randomly grouped objects, challenged traditional hierarchies in art. Shore used a palette knife to apply paint, creating a raw and textured surface.
