Sidney Nolan: An Icon of Modern Australian Art

Sidney Nolan (1917-1992) produced one of the most distinctive and diverse bodies of work of any Australian painter of the 20th century. It was in the 1940s that Nolan found his artistic voice, one imbued with poetic sensibility, which he continued to develop in the ensuing decades. For Sidney Nolan, the expression of emotion was key above all else. His body of work can be viewed in series like ‘visual poems’, which when considered collectively, weave together a unique visual language identifiable as Nolan’s own.

“I’m very interested, in fact, compelled and dedicated to transmitting emotions and I care for very little else. I care for that process so much that I’m prepared to belt the paint across the canvas much faster than it should be belted, I don’t care so long as I can get the emotional communication, I will sacrifice everything to it –and this I’ve done.” (Sidney

Within these 228 lots, there are works spanning from the 1950s onwards, presenting works that showcase his diverse travels and knowledge of the Australian landscape, as well as the terrain of Antarctica, wildlife of Africa, and the treasures of Greece and Asia. This forms the largest single auction of Sidney Nolan artworks ever presented to market, and we greatly look forward bringing this collection to the public with Leonard Joel.

Sidney Nolan: Myths, Legends, Landscapes –

Sir Sidney Nolan (1917-1992) was one of Australia’s most recognised artists, nationally and internationally. He was also the most appreciated Australian artist of his generation with John Reed promoting his paintings almost as soon as Nolan took up the brush and a whole string of luminaries – including Kenneth Clark in London and Elwyn Lynn in Australia – amongst his devotees. Nolan also has over a dozen monographs devoted to his art and a long string of retrospective and survey exhibitions have been held in the major public art galleries of Australia.

Nolan was a highly experimental artist who was unbelievably prolific and tackled multiple mediums across many art forms from easel paintings to monumental murals, stage sets and sculptures in gold. One of his biographers, Tom Rosenthal, observed that Nolan “was a prodigious worker who probably left over 10,000 significant individual works, from flimsy transfer drawings to tiny paintings on glass or slate to elaborate collages to massive polyptychs nearly forty feet long”. Barry Pearce, who curated Nolan’s major retrospective exhibition in Sydney in 2007, calculated that Nolan’s oeuvre, in paintings alone, stood at about 35,000 works, but this estimate is considered by the Nolan Estate to be grossly exaggerated based on number of paintings in the estate and sold at auction since 1969. Now, more than two decades after his passing, we are still gradually processing his heritage preserved in the estate of Lady Mary Nolan and discovering rarely seen or previously never exhibited Nolan gems across a variety of mediums and techniques.

Nolan was an exceptionally well informed, well-read, and cerebral artist, who was aware of the national tragic myths that punctuated the European struggles for national identity, especially during the Romantic period. To some extent the desire for myths and legends that Nolan brought to the fore in some of his best work could also be viewed as part of a much broader international tradition. Nolan’s Ned Kelly, Burke and Wills, Mrs Fraser and the Gallipoli soldiers to us appear more real and genuine than photographs and historical documents. He does not celebrate heroic acts that lead to conventional hero-worship, but actions that often ended in defeat and acts of courage that lead to disaster and national trauma. Through these, as in European art, Nolan created lasting icons of national identity.

Landscapes were also an important aspect of Nolan’s art, but I don’t think that Nolan made Australians see their country afresh. Unlike with Fred Williams, Arthur Streeton or Hans Heysen, we do not look at a landscape and say that’s a Nolan landscape, even in the red centre. His genius was for the experimental emblematic creation. Like the Ned Kelly emblem which has become the single most recognisable visual image of Australia. He was a supremely inventive artist who employed bricolage with a stroke of genius. Throughout this selection of Nolan’s work there is a heightened sense of visual excitement, experimentation and the expressed desire to be different.

The drawing, Auschwitz head, c.1957, as in so much of Nolan’s best work, with an exceptional economy of pictorial means creates a haunting image that when coupled with the title becomes powerful and memorable. This is one of several works on this theme that is included in this selection.

4

Another important recurring theme amongst this body of work deals with the Anzacs at Gallipoli. Nolan had a personal link with the theme as his brother had drowned in 1945 and he associated this with the Anzacs who lost their lives on the beaches off Gallipoli. The mixed media drawing on paper, ANZAC soldiers Gallipoli, 1961, is one of several Gallipoli series works in this collection and belongs to several hundred works that he painted on this theme between the mid-1950s and the late 1970s. Nolan visited the battlefield site only once, in October 1957, but it seemed to charge his imagination. He wrote, “I stood on the place where the first ANZACs had stood, looked across the straits to the site of ancient Troy, and felt that here history had stood still … I visualised the young, fresh faces of the boys from the bush, knowing nothing of war or faraway places, all individuals, and suddenly all the same – united and uniform in the dignity of the common destiny.”

Nolan was involved with stage sets and dancers as witnessed by several mixed media drawings from the 1960s, including Dancer, circa 1961, and a whole bundle of highly expressive works titled Rite of Spring, 1962. When Kenneth MacMillan choreographed Stravinsky’s ‘The Rite of Spring’ for the Royal Ballet for London’s Covent Garden production in 1962, Nolan designed the costumes and sets. He employed earthy ochres and gave a distinctive Aboriginal flavour to the production largely inspired by Axel Poignant’s body of photographs made during a six-month stay in several Arnhem Land communities in 1952. Poignant subsequently photographed the MacMillan/Nolan production and in one of the photographs captures Nolan executing paintings in this selection in aniline dye, wax crayon and metallic paint on paper. As with much of Nolan’s best work, there is a startling freshness with the ability to surprise and astound the viewer.

Nolan was an addicted traveller, internationally and throughout Australia. In this selection of Nolan’s work there are images from Antarctica, Africa and the Australian outback, including memorable images such as Drought, circa 1961, Desert Landscape, circa 1961, Figures in landscape, 1967, and Central Australia and animal form, 1969. No selection of Nolan’s work would be complete without some Kelly work and that of his obsessive hero, the French poet Arthur Rimbaud. Two of the strongest works from these thematic obsessions are Ned Kelly – Jerilderie letter, c.1966, and the major oil painting Rimbaud at Harar, 1963.

Nolan frequently found inspiration in literature, literary themes and Greek mythology, for example, Rimbaud, Lowell, Shakespeare, Baudelaire, Leda and the Swan, Oedipus, Orpheus and the Minotaur and Theseus, but he never became a literary or illustrative artist. The literary or mythological impulse was his point of departure for a very personal and unexpected visual invention.

In 1943, Nolan’s friend and fellow artist, Albert Tucker, presented an apt assessment of Nolan when he wrote in Angry Penguins, “His long immersion in radical modernism, prolific with magnificent trivialities, has paid dividends in the development of an individual perception of a very high order, and in the steady growth of a rare lyrical talent.” This assessment held true as Nolan’s art grew and blossomed for the next half century.

OTHER NOTES:

In 1947, Nolan spent several weeks on Fraser Island whilst visiting Queensland. He learnt of the story of Mrs. Eliza Fraser - including her survival after the shipwreck amongst the local Indigenous Australians, her eventual return to England, and the impact of her claims about her experience.

It inspired the series by Sidney Nolan featuring Mrs. Fraser.

The source for this painting was probably the well-known photograph by Herbert Ponting, Iceberg Cavern 1910, which depicts the view from inside an ice cave close to where Ernest Shackleton’s ship, The Endurance, was trapped in sea ice.

“I had this cliché idea of Antarctica being flat, an enormous paddock across which dogs would run and explorers would battle … but I found a majestic kind of great continent, very much higher than Switzerland, and glaciers the size of Sydney Harbour coming down at steep angles. One felt this instantaneous fear at the first sight of it, that it would annihilate one; but this was overcome by the sense of wonder in it.”

OTHER NOTES:

Nolan began his career making abstracts before gradually shifting into figuration in the early 1940s. He did not return to abstraction until the late 1960s when he began work on his enormous multi-panel Oceania paintings (the series includes Paradise Gardens, Arts Centre Melbourne; and Snake, MONA, Hobart). The present work is a rare example of Nolan’s large-scale single panel abstracts from this period.

RELATED WORKS:

Sidney Nolan, Rimbaud at Harar 1963, 152.5 x 122cm in Pearce, B., Sidney Nolan, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, 2007, p.186 (illustrated)

Nolan’s 1962-63 African paintings were largely inspired by his interest in the French poet Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1891) who spent most of the latter part of his life in East Africa. The painting is probably loosely based on a photograph of the poet dressed in white, taken in 1883.

CONDITIONS OF BUSINESS / SUMMARY

Special Conditions of Sale – Jewellery

Jewellery and watches offered by Leonard Joel are sometimes accompanied by an Independent valuation as stated in the catalogue. These valuations are conducted by registered valuers and are offered purely as independent opinions. Variation may be found as to the colour, clarity and size of stones described in these reports, consequently Leonard Joel does not guarantee these Independent Valuations. Where stones can be weighed accurately, weights will be provided. Weights of set stones are estimates only and are provided to the best of our technical ability. Gram weight on gold and other precious metals are also given as an approximation. Wristwatches and pocket watches are offered in there current condition and Leonard Joel does not guarantee that they are in working order. Items may be thoroughly inspected during the viewing period or by prior arrangement.

Authenticity Certificates

As various manufacturers may not issue certificates of authenticity, Leonard Joel has no obligation to furnish a buyer with a certificate of authenticity from the manufacturer, except where specifically noted in the catalogue. Unless Leonard Joel is satisfied that it should cancel the sale in accordance with the Limited Warranty provided in the General Conditions of Business, the failure of a manufacturer to issue a certificate will not constitute grounds for cancellation of the sale.

GST

In the event that the vendor is registered for Goods & Services Tax (GST), the invoice to the buyer will provide a separate entry for the GST which is included in the purchase price. All Leonard Joel charges for services referred to in this catalogue are exclusive of GST. Overseas buyers may be entitled to a rebate for GST charged.

Admission

Leonard Joel has the right at its sole discretion without assigning any reason therefore to refuse admission to the premises or attendance at any of its sales of any person.

Commission (Absentee) Bids

Leonard Joel will execute absentee bids when instructed. Lots will be bought as cheaply as allowed by other bids and/or reserves.

Telephone Bidding

Buyers interested in bidding by telephone should contact Leonard Joel as soon as possible. Please note that telephone bidding facilities are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Bidder Registration

To recognise bidders during the sale all intending buyers are required to complete a Bidder Registration Form providing full photo identification and appropriate references if required before the Sale which will enable them to bid by way of a numbered paddle allocated to them.

Buyer’s Premium

There will be a buyer’s premium added to all purchases. The buyer’s premium will be calculated at the rate of 25% of the hammer price on each lot. This is inclusive of GST. The buyer’s premium is reflected by a reduction in the Seller’s Commission and is a common practice throughout Australia and overseas.

Property subject to the Artist Resale Royalty

Lots with the § sign will be subject to payment of the Artist Resale Royalty in the event that the lot is sold for a hammer price of $1,000 or more. The Australian Resale Royalty is a flat rate of 5 percent (5%) levy on the hammer price (including GST). The Australian Resale Royalty is payable by the buyer in addition to the buyer’s premium plus applicable GST.

Damage

Any viewer who damages a Lot will be held liable for all damage caused and shall reimburse Leonard Joel for all costs and expenses relating to rectification of such damage.

Title

Leonard Joel guarantees good title to all lots.

Warranties and Condition Reports

Condition reports will be available for any lot upon request, subject to conditions.

Protection of Movable Cultural Heritage Act 1986 (PMCH Act)

Buyers should be aware of the PMCH Act which protects Australia’s heritage of movable cultural objects and supports foreign countries’ right to protect their heritage of movable cultural objects. The PMCH Act regulates the export of

nationally significant heritage objects, it is not intended to restrict normal and legitimate trade in cultural property, and does not affect an individual’s right to own or sell objects, within Australia. The PMCH Act was enacted in response to the 1970 UNESCO Convention on the Means of Prohibiting the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property. It is the responsibility of the Buyer to ensure that the export of any lots purchased are not subject to, or in breach of, this Act.

Information about the PMCH Act, the Protection of Movable Cultural Heritage Regulations 1987 and the 1970 UNESCO Convention, can be found on the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts website at: www.environment.gov.au/heritage/movable/index

The PMCH Act implements a system of export permits for certain heritage objects defined as ‘Australian protected objects’.

“It would have been impossible not to have been intrigued, entranced perhaps and inevitably from time to time irritated, by the gregarious, imaginative, mischievous being that was Sidney Nolan. We know him above all as a painter of prodigious output but behind that relentless endeavour there lay an intelligence of mercurial curiosity.”
