A Collector’s Pursuit –
For many of our clients, collecting is a lifelong pursuit, sometimes it begins as a childhood hobby and other times it is something started in adulthood. Regardless of age or expertise, the appeal of seeking, locating, acquiring, and displaying items of interest can provide great fulfilment. Some collectors are extremely particular in the type of objects collected and we have seen collections amassed around some of the most unusual subjects, not only grouped by object type such as clocks or porcelain, but also by theme (my mind jumps to an extraordinary collection I once saw based on the theme of bears). However, I know many collectors’ interests are also more general in nature and can span themes, time periods and categories. Likewise, this auction presents a diverse range of unique wares with some particularly exciting pieces both of Australian and international heritage.
The acclaimed Australian artist Norman Lindsay is well known for his depictions of the female form and in lot 35, Nude with Dove, we see a romantic and rare oil painting by the artist. Another oil on canvas, lot 51, this time by the English artist Douglas Cowper who died tragically young, is an angelic depiction of his two sisters Eliza and Penelope Cowper. Shortly thereafter, lot 54, we have Rembrandt’s etching Descent from the Cross by Torchlight, which provides a striking example of the Dutch Golden Age artist’s exceptional printmaking skills.
The furniture and interiors within the auction comprise an array of European master craftmanship, most notably in the impressive extending dining table, lot 156, with a design attributed to Gillows. Of course, the sale also includes a most remarkable centrepiece for any dining table in the form of a large Victorian silver salver, lot 176. It is incredibly well cast and engraved with the latin motto ‘hinc fortior et clarior’ which translates to ‘henceforth stronger and brighter’.
The enchanting skill and technique of the French art glassmaker Charles Schneider is on prominent display in the Estate of John Kennedy Mclaughlin (lots 256-357), as well as a lovely selection of Moorcroft pottery and three Soviet teacups and saucers.
Closing out the auction we have four significant pieces of international acclaim. Lot 358 is an imposing bronze sculpture by the Russian artist Mark Matveyevich Antokolsky of the Germanic folklore demon Mephistopheles. Lots 362-364 are three important 18th century Meissen figural groups from the collection of Robert Compton Jones who was an eminent local dealer of international standing.
However you choose to collect, I hope this current iteration of The Collector’s Auction abounds with enchanting items to inspire your imagination and enhance your collection.

The early years of Norman Lindsay's artistic career were taken up mainly with his works on paper, including watercolour, etching and drawing. It was not until he had entered his fifties that he began seriously painting in oils. As such, most of Lindsay's oil paintings were completed from the mid 1930s onwards. His dedication to mastering the medium meant a great deal of physical energy was needed and as such his output in other mediums became somewhat less during those years. Many of his oils were vertical in composition and he maintained his fascination for representing the nude and femininity in this medium. Lin Bloomfield commented: "One of the advantages that oil had over other mediums for him was that he was better able to catch flesh tones. To any painter of nudes, this must be one of the main goals, and there is no doubt that in his better paintings he succeeded admirably." (Bloomfield, L, The World of Norman Lindsay, Sydney. 1979, p. 65)

DOUGLAS COWPER (British, 1817-1839)
Eliza and Penelope Cowper oil on canvas
92 x 77cm
PROVENANCE:
Penelope Cowper, UK
Thence by descent
OTHER NOTES:
Douglas Cowper (1817-1839) was a talented but tragically short-lived portrait artist who was born in Gibraltar and studied at Sass’s Academy and the Royal Academy Schools in London where he was awarded the first silver medal for a copy of a work by Poussin. Whilst studying, he befriended and also painted his co-student William Powell Frith (18191909, portrait sold Sotheby’s London 3 October 2007). He exhibited at the Royal Academy, The Society of British Artists and the British Institution but his life was cut short from tuberculosis at the age of 22. This delightful double portrait is of his two sisters Eliza and Penelope. The darker haired older girl is Eliza Cowper who also died from tuberculosis in Gibraltar, on the eve of her wedding. The younger blonde ringleted girl, Penelope, was the sole survivor of her family following the death of her parents and siblings. She married Robert Tennent, from a wealthy Scottish family with vast business interests and they had six children. Penelope and the children moved to Australia after the early death of her husband, and brought this painting with her. It has remained in the family ever since.
$3,000-5,000
GABRIELE CASTAGNOLA (Italian, 1828-1883)
Filippo Lippi Falling in Love with Lucrezia Buti 1873 oil on canvas, a pair each signed, inscribed and dated: G. Castagnola / Firenze 1873 (one lower left, the other lower right) 100 x 74cm
PROVENANCE:
Bonhams, London, British and European Art, 20 March 2018, lot 112 Private collection, Sydney
OTHER NOTES:
These two paintings depict the development of the love affair between the artist Filippo Lippi and Lucrezia Buti. Buti was a nun at the monastery of Santa Margherita in Prato where, in 1456, Lippi was commissioned to complete a painting for the high altar. After having used her as the model for his Madonna it is said that they fell in love and he stole her away, bringing her to his home in Florence where they remained and would go on to have two children. In the scene with Lippi on his knees one can see to the right his famed painting of the Madonna currently held in the collection of the Uffizi Gallery.

MARK MATVEYEVICH ANTOKOLSKY (Russian, 1840-1902)
Mephistopheles
bronze
signed in the bronze: Antocolsky
cast by F. Barbedienne, Paris Height 84cm
OTHER NOTES:
Mark Matveevich Antokolsky was one of the most important Russian realists of the nineteenth century with The Tretyakov Gallery alone housing thirty of his works, including the bust of Mephistopheles as well as editions of the full-body version in marble and bronze. The sculptor first had the idea of portraying the demon made famous by Goethe’s Faust in 1874, and whilst living in Paris, he produced the bust in 1877 and finished the full-body sculpture in 1883. The same year it was purchased by the Hermitage, and in 1897 it was moved to the newlyestablished Russian Museum in St Petersburg. It represents the devil’s agent as a slender man lost in thought, forgoing any costume to underscore his subject’s timelessness and universality with only the goatee and slightly horned haircut to signal the demon’s devilish nature. His elbows and shoulders are sharp, his fingers long, his facial features lean, his skin taut over bone. His posture is hunched and its tension is internal, as if the demon were gathering his thoughts and energies without any signs of danger or aggression.
On the day he completed the sculpture Antokolsky wrote to E. G. Mamontova, the wife of arts patron Savva Mamontov, delineating his artistic intentions in detail: ‘My Mephistopheles represents the puzzlement, plague and putridity that poisons the air, that gets inside people and ruins them. Mephistopheles is relentless evil, an evil without end; ruthless, repulsive, nesting in an ill body with a collapsing soul. He is sick and suffering from having lived through everything, from decay, from an inability to take pleasure in life. His spirit is lifeless, he is incapable of creation, and yet he cannot hide his envy, pride and weakness. The warm spring rays of sunlight burn his skin and blind him. All forms of happiness, be they laughter or the kiss of young lovers, annoy him. He wants everything around him to be as dark, deathly, empty and lifeless as he is. To walk in darkness, to dig the ground like a mole, to ruin, to beget suffering, to see blood and tears pouring down-these are the things that calm and settle him, although he never quite takes pleasure in them, so unquenchable is his lust for lifelessness’
(V. Stasov, ed., Antokolsky: His Creative Life, Letters and Articles, 1905, p. 441). $20,000-30,000

A MEISSEN GROUP OF ‘THE TYROLEAN DANCERS’
Circa 1740, modelled by Johann Friedrich Eberlein (1695-1749) as two swirling figures with their arms linked, he in a grey hat with a purple rosette and band, green jacket with gilt bands and yellow breeches, she with a white blouse, a pale pink flower-sprigged bodice, red skirt painted with gilt and black flowers and gilt borders, white apron and yellow shoes with blue rosettes, on a shaped mound base and a gilt metal rocaille scrolled plinth, underglaze blue crossed swords mark to base.
Overall height 18cm
OTHER NOTES:
Traditionally this group has been described as the Dutch or Tyrolean dancers though contemporary descriptions differ, see Ingelore Menzhausen and Jurgen Karpinski, In Porzellan Versaubert, Basel, 1993, pp. 136-7, Kaendler’s Taxa for 1743 records ‘1 Groupgen wie ein Arlequin mit einem dergl. Weibel miteinander Pohlnisch tanzen’. Three versions of this model were made, the first modelled by Eberlein in 1735 with two later revisions by Kaendler. This model proved so popular that it was copied by both the Chelsea and Bow factories and also by Chinese potters in the Qianlong period. See the similar model illustrated by Yvonne Hackenbroch, Meissen and other Continental Porcelain, Faience and Enamel in the Irwin Untermyer Collection, London, 1956, fig. 84.
$15,000-25,000

A MEISSEN GROUP OF ‘THE INDISCREET HARLEQUIN’
Circa 1742, armorial red wax seal to back of base, modelled by J.J. Kändler, with Columbine seated on Beltrame’s lap in an amorous embrace, Harlequin at their feet peeping up Columbine’s skirt, on a shaped mound base applied with flowers and foliage. Height 15.9cm
PROVENANCE:
Private collection, Avenue Montaigne, Paris, c.1890-1930
Christies, London, Centuries of Style: Silver, European Ceramics, Portrait Miniatures and Gold Boxes, 1-2 December 2015, lot 47
LITERATURE:
Eisenbeiss, E. P, German Porcelain of the 18th Century, London, 1972, pp. 268-269.
OTHER NOTES:
Bawdy humour was used by the commedia actors to punctuate their performance and this required a mastery of comedic timing. In this group Kändler captured a moment at the height of the comic action when Harlequin peeps up the skirt of the distracted Columbine. Meredith Chilton suggests that the group could have been derived from a blend of two separate print sources. The couple’s pose could be derived from one of Petrus Schenck’s engravings of Columbine seated on Harlequin’s lap, taken from a series of twelve engravings, ‘Les Amours de Columbine’, which show Columbine ‘paired in amorous positions with almost every male member of the troupe’. Harlequin’s pose could be based on Gregorio Lambranzi’s engraving from ‘The New and Eccentric School of Theatrical Dancing’, where Harlequin is shown ‘concealed’ on the ground and reaching up ‘in order to steal from an unsuspecting blind beggar’. (Chilton, M, Harlequin Unmasked, The Commedia dell’Arte and Porcelain Sculpture, Singapore, 2001, p. 138, fig. 225 and pp. 304-305, where the example of this model in the George R. Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art, Toronto, is also illustrated, no. 93).
A similar group was sold at Christie’s London on 18 November 2008, lot 121.
$30,000-50,000

A MEISSEN CRINOLINE GROUP OF ‘LA TASSE DE CHOCOLAT’
Circa 1740, modelled by J. J. Kändler, the lady seated with a pug-dog on her lap on a chair with a high pierced back, a servant holding a tazza with a chocolate cup beside her and a tripod table on her left with a chocolate pot, chocolate cup and saucer, sugar bowl and snuff box, on a shaped mound base applied with flowers and foliage, underglaze blue crossed swords mark to base.
Height 15cm
PROVENANCE:
Private collection, Avenue Montaigne, Paris, c.1890-1930
Christies, London, Centuries of Style: Silver, European Ceramics, Portrait Miniatures and Gold Boxes, 1-2 December 2015, lot 44
OTHER NOTES:
This group is recorded in Kändler’s Taxa of April-June 1737 and exists with a number of variations to the figural composition. The group was inspired by an engraving by Laurent Cars after Boucher depicting a scene from Molière’s comedy ‘Le Sicilien ou l’Amour peintre’. A similar group with a table and chocolateservice is illustrated by Dr. Erika Pauls-Eisenbeiss, German Porcelain of the Eighteenth Century, Vol. I, 1972, pp. 194-195 and another is illustrated by Stefan Bursche, Meissen, Steinzeug und Porzellan des 18. Jahrhunderts Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin, Berlin, 1980, p. 297, cat no. 306. A variant of this model with a kneeling cavalier, from the same collection as the present lot, was sold at Christie’s on 2 June 2015, lot 28 and another group with the table on 21 November 2005, lot 91. $30,000-50,000
