Craftsmanship, Design, Rarity and Provenance

Welcome to our first Collector’s Auction for 2024 which traverses the broad collecting category that has come to be known as the decorative arts. Focusing on exceptional craftsmanship, design, rarity and provenance, the sale includes impressive examples of English and French furniture, porcelain, silver, clocks, marble sculpture and fine art. The Estate of Judith and Ernest Rapee, which leads our auction, is a tribute to early 20th century elegance, celebrating the romanticism of Norman Lindsay’s watercolours, oils, drawings and etchings. Our traditional European furniture includes exceptional French craftsmanship as exemplified in the Louis XV walnut canapés and fauteuils (lot 80 and 81) and the regence commode (lot 83). The quality of fine art on offer is illustrated by the rare 17th century Dutch still life by Pieter Gerritsz van Roestraten (lot 156) which highlights the artist’s talent for depicting reflective surfaces on objects for which he was well known. Other notable mentions in the art category include: two landscapes by Grosvenor school artist Eveline Syme (lot 166 and 167) which both have ‘cancelled’ draft compositions on the reverse; and our cover lot, the fastidiously detailed interior scene painted by the British artist Jessica Hayllar who exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. The excellence of the Royal Academy is no where better emphasised than through the work of the Royal Academician Arthur George Walker. Discovering Walker’s delicate yet awe-inspiring marble sculpture of Peleus and Thetis (lot 44) has been one of the true joys of putting together the Collector’s Auction and re-confirms the ability of this auction to gather exceptional items from a variety of disciplines, cultures, and eras. madeleine norton head of decorative arts & art, sydney

Arthur George Walker RA

In Greek mythology, Peleus may be best known as the father of Achilles. However, he was also a hero, king and the husband of the sea-nymph, Thetis. Thetis was loved by Zeus and Poseidon, who gave her to Peleus, king of Myrmidons of Thessaly, in order to fulfil her destiny of bearing a son who would be mightier than his father. Thetis unwillingly wed to a mortal, resisted Peleus’s advances by changing herself into various forms. However, assisted by the wise centaur Chiron, Peleus finally captured her and the child of their union became the warrior Achilles. Walker’s sculpture of her spurned embrace delicately captures the pair twistingly intertwined. The sheen of the marble reveals their taught muscles as Thetis pulls away to resist and Peleus clings tighter still. The tension between the figures is palpable as Peleus puckers his lips preparing for the impending kiss and Thetis turns her cheek. Arthur George Walker RA (1861-1939) was an English sculptor and painter who studied at the Royal Academy in London from c.1883-1887. Among his bestknown works are several war memorials throughout the UK and a statue of Florence Nightingale in Waterloo Place, London. His work is held in the collections of Tate Britain, London, the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, and the Royal Academy, London. madeleine norton head of decorative arts & art, sydney

Length: 164cm, Height 90cm, Depth 83cm, Weight approximately 250kg other notes Commissioned research by the British Horological Institute’s Museum of Time Keeping has dated the clock’s creation to 1760-1810, probably in Austria. At that time, the Industrial Revolution was generating high demand for clocks, and skilled European craftsmen were developing new technologies and techniques to produce high-quality mechanical timepieces for a growing market. The clock would originally have been set high in a tower (or turret) with a 2.5-metre pendulum swinging beneath. Pre-dating wristwatches, it played an important role in regulating the lives of all within hearing distance by chiming each quarter hour. A failsafe mechanism repeated the bells that marked the hour. The clock was wound each day with a crank handle. A small dial allowed the clock winder to check what time the large, external clock face was showing. $15,000-20,000 Viewing by appointment only in Burradoo, NSW 2576.
