Setting the scene for the year, The Collector’s Auction on the 21st of February opens Leonard Joel’s calendar with a treasure trove of artefacts sure to delight any collector.
Our important art offering includes a classic Fred Williams gouache, a painting by Jordy Kerwick (the Australian contemporary artist who has recently scaled the ranks of the international artworld), and an etching by Pablo Picasso of the iconic Marie-Thérèse.
Our traditional decorative arts offering boasts an early 18th century armoire (lot 55) which is impressive in scale looming overhead at over two and a half metres tall. The late George III oak breakfront secretaire bookcase (lot 38) is another notable piece of craftmanship that makes a statement in any room.
The Property of a Gentleman (lots 67-136) showcases an inspiring collection amassed with a discerning eye over decades. Highlights from the collection include: the cover lot (133) a monumental bronze equestrian figure of Louis XIV, an Empire ormolu mantel clock (lot 70), and a regence ormolu mounted commode (lot 122).
The auction flows through to a refined selection of glassware and silverware, closing with our small yet impressive section of Asian art. Of note are the Japanese bronze of a Macaque (lot 176) which is finely sculpted and the imperial jade bowl (lot 185) exceptional for the beauty of its colour.
To all our Leonard Joel clients, I hope The Collector’s Auction is the beginning of a positive and fruitful collecting journey for you in 2023.

56.5 x 75cm
PROVENANCE:
Rex Irwin Art Dealer, Sydney Private collection, Sydney $35,000-55,000
Fred Williams was a painter and printmaker whose distinctive vision and innovative style reinvented the way the Australian landscape was viewed and represented. His subject matter was always derived from something he had observed outside as he strove to depict the underlying “bones” of the Australian continent. He developed a visual language which involved the reduction of form in the landscape to a series of abstract motifs. In the present lot we see the soft crest of a hill as denoted by a single almost unbroken line. The landscape is dotted with ambiguous strokes of paint and as your eye attempts to discern the pattern of these strokes the imagery of rocks, trees and a blustery wind appear and disappear before you. The subtle play of colour and texture produce an atmospheric composition characteristic of Williams’ unique approach.

Marie-Thérèse was the inspiration for many of Picasso’s greatest works and the story of their first encounter and subsequent love affair is among the most compelling in 20th century art history. For Picasso, Marie-Thérèse offered a combination of the lover, the model, and the goddess, and she was cast in many roles throughout his body of work. The present lot is an intimate yet confronting portrait depicting her gazing directly at the viewer. Similarities can be seen in the composition to the later 1937 painting by Picasso of Marie-Thérèse in a Red Beret which is housed at the Tate Modern, London.

The Meeting of King Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville at Woodstock oil on canvas
signed on stretcher verso: D MACLISE RA
23.5 x 33.5cm
OTHER NOTES:
The partially intact label on the back of the stretcher bearing the words “Illustration from Woodstock... Edward .. and Elizabeth Woodville..” provides the clue to the story of this composition; The story of King Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville, whom Edward secretly married in 1452 and she was crowned Queen in May 1465. At the time of their first meeting Elizabeth had been recently widowed and, as was customary for unmarried women at the time, had been dispossessed of her land and forced to move with her two children to her parents’ home. Legend has it that Elizabeth became aware that Edward was visiting Wychwood forest for a hunting excursion (Woodstock referred to on the label was a wooded park - later Blenheim - within Wychwood forest that belonged to the King). Elizabeth went there to meet Edward to plead for her land to be returned to her. Edward was so taken by her beauty that he instantly fell in love. $1,000-2,000

Known as a connoisseur of archaic jades the Qianlong emperor had many pieces in the Imperial Collections. This heavy bowl is exceptional for the beauty of its colour, and the effects of the interplay of various inclusions in the stone. Porcelains created with the effect of simulating natural phenomena were particularly popular during the Qianlong reign, and it is possible that this bowl was commissioned to simulate the much admired qualities of dreamstone.

Bidder Registration
To recognise bidders during the sale all intending buyers are required to complete a Bidder Registration Form providing full photo identification and appropriate references if required before the Sale which will enable them to bid by way of a numbered paddle allocated to them.
Buyer’s Premium
There will be a buyer’s premium added to all purchases. The buyer’s premium will be calculated at the rate of 25% of the hammer price on each lot. This is inclusive of GST. The buyer’s premium is reflected by a reduction in the Seller’s Commission and is a common practice throughout Australia and overseas.
Property subject to the Artist Resale Royalty
Lots with the § sign will be subject to payment of the Artist Resale Royalty in the event that the lot is sold for a hammer price of $1,000 or more. The Australian Resale Royalty is a flat rate of 5 percent (5%) levy on the hammer price (including GST). The Australian Resale Royalty is payable by the buyer in addition to the buyer’s premium plus applicable GST.

Any viewer who damages a lot will be held liable for all damage caused and shall reimburse Leonard Joel for all costs and expenses relating to rectification of such damage.

Protection of Movable Cultural Heritage Act 1986 (PMCH Act)
Buyers should be aware of the PMCH Act which protects Australia’s heritage of movable cultural objects and supports foreign countries’ right to protect their heritage of movable cultural objects. The PMCH Act regulates the export of nationally significant heritage objects, it is not intended to restrict normal and legitimate trade in cultural property,

Information about the PMCH Act, the Protection of Movable Cultural Heritage Regulations 1987 and the 1970 UNESCO Convention, can be found on the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts website at: www.environment.gov.au/heritage/movable/index
