Our first dedicated timepieces and watches collection

Such has been the success of our recent timepieces sales that we are pleased to split our Spring catalogue with a dedicated section for watches. In keeping with our established reputation for bringing you watches from the world-renowned makers our new look format sale includes “the holy trinity’’ of the high end of Swiss watch brands such as Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Rolex, alongside older vintage timepieces.

The sale commences with a feast for pocket watch enthusiasts with examples ranging in date from as early as the 1700s through to the early 20th Century, a number with fascinating provenance attached. Lot 8 a heavy, monogrammed 18ct gold split-seconds chronograph is engraved with presentation inscription to A.G. Holroyd. The discovery of tellurides in 1896 is largely attributed to Holroyd, this discovery would prove significant to the socio-historic development of the West Australian mining sector. Interesting historical nautical provenance is connected also to lot 7, a very fine 18ct gold pocket chronometer signed by E.J. Dent, the company noted for their unparalleled reputation for the accuracy of their clocks and marine chronometers. In unblemished condition, this keywound example is offered in its fitted mahogany deck box.

Moving ahead in time, we present an impressive line up of exciting timepieces from rare tool watches to luxurious dress watches and many of the timeless classics. Hard to look past is a striking stand out from Rolex, lot 32 an 18ct gold sapphire and diamond encrusted GMT which can be best described as a “sparkling symphony’’ on the wrist. Our front cover Lot 27, property of the original owner, is a coveted reference 6239 this model was launched in 1963 until 1976. Fast track to around the 2000s and reference 16523 (lot 26) is a true collector’s Daytona, powered by a Zenith movement, the cal. 4030 was the last outsourced movement for Rolex. To complete the picture and certainly a ‘trophy Daytona’ for any committed Rolex collector, we offer lot 39 a white gold and pink mother of pearl dial, reference 116519 released in the early 2000s as a part of a low production special series of colourful Daytonas that would go on to be nicknamed the “Beach” Daytonas.

As far as tool watches that pack a punch, it is hard to ignore lot 43, this stunning Audemars Piguet with a heavy 41mm 18ct gold and black ceramic case features the distinct porthole shaped bezel design by legendary Swiss watch designer Gerald Genta and AP’s signature ‘tapisserie’ waffle style grid pattern dial. And just on that topic of innovative case design, lot 19 with its distinctive oversized cushion-shaped form is immediately recognisable as a Panerai, one of the most collectible dive watch manufacturers in the world. Both watches present in excellent condition and are accompanied by complete box and papers.

An array of classic wristwatches and bracelet watches are also offered for the budding collector or the established connsoisseur including classics from Cartier with versions of the Santos and Tank in steel and in gold, from Jaeger- LeCoultre we present a Grande 986 DuoDate Reverso and from Breitling, Omega IWC, Zenith and Ulysse Nardin the finest in precision chronographs. With so much on offer you may be in doubt about where to commence in your watch collecting journey, I would advise you need look no further than with the master many consider the pinnacle in watchmaking: Patek Philippe. Lot 59 with its satisfying pure proportions and high performance movement is where you might say precision meets horological perfection.

CONDITIONS OF BUSINESS / SUMMARY

Special Conditions of Sale – Jewellery

Jewellery and watches offered by Leonard Joel are sometimes accompanied by an Independent valuation as stated in the catalogue. These valuations are conducted by registered valuers and are offered purely as independent opinions. Variation may be found as to the colour, clarity and size of stones described in these reports, consequently Leonard Joel does not guarantee these Independent Valuations. Where stones can be weighed accurately, weights will be provided. Weights of set stones are estimates only and are provided to the best of our technical ability. Gram weight on gold and other precious metals are also given as an approximation. Wristwatches and pocket watches are offered in there current condition and Leonard Joel does not guarantee that they are in working order. Items may be thoroughly inspected during the viewing period or by prior arrangement.

Authenticity Certificates

As various manufacturers may not issue certificates of authenticity, Leonard Joel has no obligation to furnish a buyer with a certificate of authenticity from the manufacturer, except where specifically noted in the catalogue. Unless Leonard Joel is satisfied that it should cancel the sale in accordance with the Limited Warranty provided in the General Conditions of Business, the failure of a manufacturer to issue a certificate will not constitute grounds for cancellation of the sale.

GST

In the event that the vendor is registered for Goods & Services Tax (GST), the invoice to the buyer will provide a separate entry for the GST which is included in the purchase price. All Leonard Joel charges for services referred to in this catalogue are exclusive of GST. Overseas buyers may be entitled to a rebate for GST charged.
