H E L L O H O L I D AY A s a c h i l d , t h e C h r i s t m a s h o l i d a y s w e r e m y f a v o u r i t e t i m e o f y e a r. (I think this is the case for most kids!) My fondest memories are the simplest ones: digging through my hand-sewn stocking on Christmas morning; snuggling up on the sofa with popcorn to watch old holiday movies; and - the ultimate treat - drinking from the “special red glasses” that my mom only let us use at Christmastime. A s I ’ v e g r o w n o l d e r, t h e h o l i d a y s - w h i l e s t i l l j o y f u l - c a n s o m e t i m e s seem more complicated. At every turn we’re nudged to try and outdo last year’s creativity: the tree needs to be bigger and sparklier; the presents n e e d t o b e i n t r i c a t e l y w ra p p e d w i t h h o m e m a d e p a p e r, a n d t h o s e h o l i d a y c h a r c u t e r i e b o a r d s n e e d t o b e l i k e n o n e o t h e r.

B u t a s I t ra v e l l e d a c r o s s t h e c o u n t r y v i s i t i n g t h e b l o g g e r s y o u ’ l l s e e within these pages, I was struck by how the simple gestures were the ones that really made it feel like Christmas. Hearing Mercedes and N a t t a l k a b o u t s p e n d i n g a n a f t e r n o o n i n t h e i r g ra n d m o t h e r ’ s k i t c h e n to learn her secret almond cake recipe made me excited for my own annual Christmas baking (peanut butter balls and gingersnaps) at my p a r e n t s ’ h o u s e . Wa t c h i n g C o l l e e n c r e a t e h e r p o m p o m w r e a t h w i t h h e r kids reminded me of making construction paper garlands and holiday wreaths with my own mom as a child. And as I chatted with the mothers and fathers in this issue about what Christmas morning is like with kids i n t h e h o u s e , I b e c a m e n o s t a l g i c f o r t h e d a y s w h e n I g o t t o d e c o ra t e j u s t t h e b o t t o m h a l f o f t h e t r e e w i t h m y b r o t h e r, a n d w h e n I t r i e d t o s w e e t talk my parents into letting us open just one gift on Christmas Eve. Holidays The holidays are a state of mind. It’s about sharing our talents and good fortune with those around us; teaching others about the gift of giving; and opening o u r h o m e s t o f r i e n d s a n d f a m i l y. O f c o u r s e , t i n s e l e d trees and sugary sweets are an important part of the equation - even if they don’t turn out quite as perfectly as planned. Winter is sometimes the longest season, but the holidays always seem too short. I t ’ s a l w a y s f u l l o f f a m i l y, f r i e n d s , a n d p r o b a b l y k i d s ’ t o y s or creations. When we bought our fixer upper three years a g o , w e w e r e s o e x c i t e d t o t ra d e u p f r o m a n a p a r t m e n t t o a home where we could host - and this space gets a workout doing just that. U n t i l r e c e n t l y, w e ’ v e a l m o s t e x c l u s i v e l y f u r n i s h e d o u r home with hand-me-downs so it was such a fun experience to choose new furniture that truly reflected our style a n d t h e w a y o u r f a m i l y u s e s t h e s p a c e . Fu r n i t u r e i s n ’ t just for sitting on in this house; it’s for fort building, superhero launching, and dog piles. BY C O L L E E N Before we moved into our home three and a half years ago, I’d never had a mantel before. I’m definitely no expert, but I’ve had so much fun playing with it each season and have come up with some simple tips to keep holiday mantel styling fun and beautiful.

Use whatever item you have centered over your mantel already a painting, mirror or even your TV - as the starting point.
FRESH IS BEST
Place heaps of fresh greenery across the mantel as a garland, and bunched in vases for interest. This is one time when more is more.
ADD SOME HEIGHT
Add height with candlesticks, vases of b ra n c h e s , a n d l a y e r e d signs on either side of the mantel.
PICK A TONE OR TWO
Use different shapes, textures, and scales to add interest but keep it within a tone or two. Think neutrals or even metallics.
HAVE SOME FUN
Add your own personal objects and mementos to spark joy. Maybe it’s your kids’ ukulele, or a potted plant from your bedroom. Think beyond standard Christmas decor and play with what you already have and love.

THE ORDINARY M A K I N G T H I S H O LY H O M E A FA M I LY H A V E N B Y L A DY H AY E S My husband and I run at the speed of light most days. When we thought about our dream home, we knew we wanted a place to escape, to be creative, wild and free, and a space to let our little girls watch a fire burn and g e t t h e i r f e e t d i r t y. S o , t u c k e d a w a y o n a q u i e t r o a d , i n a small village of 300 sits a turn of the century church and, well, we bought it! One of the first things we did to our space was renovate the upstairs loft which instantly became one of our favourite places in the church. We knew that turning the space into the living room would be perfect. I was especially eager to set up our Christmas tree and have our first holiday in the church. I originally imagined this space as a bedroom, but I wanted it to be a place we could all enjoy and get cozy in. Adding the Devina Daybed was a great way to make the best of both worlds. It’s the perfect spot to read, snuggle, and catch up on some quality zzz’s. .

BY T H A L I TA A N D M A R Q U I S In our house, the kitchen is where we end up spending most of our time, whether it’s just the four of us, or we’re entertaining family and friends. Spending time around m y g ra n d p a r e n t s ’ t a b l e a s a c h i l d taught me that the time we spend around the table as a family is b o t h m e a n i n g f u l a n d impor t an t. W e decided to have our dining room as an extension of our kitchen s o t h e r e i s n o s e p a ra t i o n f r o m where the food is made and where it’s consumed. To inject a little personality into this room, we painted one accent wall in a large buffalo check pattern. We went for a sage green that can work regardless of s e a s o n ra t h e r t h a n t h e t ra d i t i o n a l black and white.

The kitchen is the true heart of our home and even if it’s as small as mine, it becomes even more important during the holiday season. To improve the function of this room, we revamped our outdated and mismatched appliances and added open shelving to this small space. BY J O A N N A Living in a small home means that every space has a secret second function: our dining room table doubles a s m y w o r k & c ra f t s p a c e , t h e l i v i n g r o o m s e r v e s a s a yoga studio, and the kids’ playroom performs doubleduty as a guest room. Since the playroom is the only room in our home where we can invite guests to sleep, I needed this small space to work for both adult guests, my two kids and their many toys. The Sonah bed comfortably sleeps two adults without o v e r w h e l m i n g t h e s p a c e l i k e o u r p r e v i o u s s l e e p e r. W h e n we don’t have any guests, it’s the perfect spot for the girls to play with their toys and read long fairy tales. Fr o m their sisterly bond to their bedtime routine, a shared bedroom has made a l l o f t h e s e e x p e r i e n c e s b e t t e r. T h e sense of calm they feel in their bedroom is a result of a design that is both f u n c t i o n a l a n d p r e t t y, w i t h o u t b e i n g over-stimulating. The Sweetdreams line of furniture will grow with my girls and their changing personalities and interests, and the twin beds we chose are big enough for a teen to sleep in, and comfortable enough to snuggle and r e a d b o o k s t o g e t h e r. By going with all white furniture, I can easily change accessories like pillows, prints and toys to give an all new vibe to their room. I know the quality and versatility of the furniture we chose will help it last for years to come.

C R E AT I N G A C O Z Y SPACE FOR THE BEST CHRISTMAS EVER B Y T H A L I TA Dave and Joy are two people who’ve inspired and motivated me, and I’ve watched them parent their two children, Ben and Aria, in such a gentle and l o v i n g w a y. W h e n t h e y t o l d u s t h e y w e r e e x p e c t i n g their third baby (another girl!), we were ecstatic and quickly began working on a plan to makeover their space. With Dave being a master of all things building and renovating, we decided to create an accent wall with a material that can grow with their little girl - shiplap. We added some new baseboards, casings and crown moulding which we painted in Benjamin Moore’s Simply White. The Cameron Contour Convertible Crib, Dresser and Changer Top are pieces that are meant to be around for a long time. The crib can eventually become a toddler bed, a daybed, and a full-sized bed, so it can really g r o w w i t h t h i s b a b y.
