Joost Swarte
De Stijl – Visiting the artist’s studio art picture book all ages
• Joost Swarte internationally acclaimed artist • 2017 international celebration: 100 years of De Stijl • ‘Art history doesn’t get any better than this.’ – nrc
At the beginning of the previous century, a group of artists wanted to shake up the art world. A lot was changing at that time; the world was ‘modernising’ at breakneck speed. Art was being left behind, they thought. Why continue to produce paintings that look like real life, when a new technology allows you to take a photo? What they wanted was paintings, buildings, toys and furniture that fitted into the new age. All designed using simple resources. Rectangular shapes, red, blue and yellow. Black, white and grey were permitted too. And clean, straight lines.
Their ideas came together in a new magazine they called De Stijl (The Style). De Stijl called for a new art for a new world and is still going strong a century later. Joost Swarte chose ten artists that were part of De Stijl or were influenced by the movement. He depicts their studio and how they worked in an homage that shows what made these artists, architects and designers unforgettable.

ART? Marcel Duchamp’s Fountain 1917-2017 • Fun gift book • 100 years anniversary of the world’s most famous ‘readymade’
A hundred years ago the French artist Marcel Duchamp challenged viewers to look at something they would never expect in a museum. Just like Marcel Duchamp writer, poet and artist Ted van Lieshout plays with our conceptions of what art is. Can one laugh at it? What did the artist mean? Does art need a museum to be art?
Official replicas can be found in important public collections: Centre Georges Pompidou, Tate Modern, the National Gallery of Canada and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
With ART? Ted van Lieshout celebrates the centenary of one of the most striking and influential works in the history of art. ‘I found modern art a complicated affair. Until I came across Fountain by Marcel Duchamp. It’s not that I understand all modern art now, but since that moment I am open to it.’

At the end of every school day, new teacher Mr Van der Steg entertains his pupils with tall tales of incredible events, which he claims really happened to him – involving hungry lions and haunted castles, shipwrecks and desert islands. One day, when he can’t think of anything suitably exciting to tell them, he invents a story about a very important letter which he’s expecting that evening, with news of a perilous mission. Evening arrives and so, to his surprise, does an enigmatic letter... The media on Tonke Dragt: ‘So nail biting you’ll need to wear protective gloves.’ – Broadsheet reviews ‘In fact, the book itself is like a song, or incantation; a wandering, winding ballad with occasional joyous percussion, to the spell of which the reader can’t help but succumb.’ – The Times, Best Books of 2016 ‘It’s a magical, strange, gripping tale.’ – The Guardian ‘This is a very different story for fans of The Letter for the King, but with the same pace and brilliant imaginative storytelling. It is full of eccentric characters and mystery, with a slight touch of humor. The Song of Seven is sure to go down as a classic in children’s literature.’ – The Spectator ‘An engaging adventure which twists and turns.’ – Booktrust ‘Gloriously written with tons of plot twists and turns, and a barrel-load of excitement.’ – North Somerset Teachers Bookaward ‘An exciting adventure.’ – Readitdaddy blogspot

After discovering that his wife has been unfaithful to him, the mighty ruler Shahriar (Persian for king) takes a new virgin bride every night and has them killed the following morning. No woman will ever cheat on him again. His Vizier’s daughter, the imaginative and inventive Scheherazade, wants to put an end to the slaughter of young girls and, so, chooses to present herself as a bride for Shahriar. On the first night, Scheherazade begins a story that is not yet finished by the morning. The king allows her to live another day, so he can hear the end of the story the following night. But the story continues into another story that hasn’t ended by the next morning. The cuckolded ruler cannot resist the temptation of the unfinished story: each time he must and shall know the ending. The nights begin to build up, one after another. And the stories begin to change Shahriar. He feels remorse for the dead brides, as well as guilt, and, to the relief of his people, he marries Scheherazade.

From the first page to the last, Belle is in bed. And not because she’s tired. By the way, ‘Belle’ means ‘beautiful’ in French, but that’s not really relevant. She loves to run and dance. And she loves her grandfather (very much), because he doesn’t treat her like she’s pitiful. Belle also loves spaghetti, but that’s actually not in the book, so it’s OK to forget this immediately. Even though it’s true. Since Belle is in bed all the time, you’ll find no running in this book. And for the first dance moves you’ll have to wait for at least hundred pages. Still, lots of things happen. Mum lies, the doctors chatter, dad keeps flying in and out and grandma falls down the stairs. In the meantime, Brie chatters like a false trumpet through Belle’s life and grandpa tells pretty good jokes. And little Jan is also there, but he doesn’t make it till the end. Or does he?

Rindert Kromhout One Mann fiction age 15+
• Sensitive portrait of a famous writer and his family
‘Someone like you, Klaus, will never stand in the shadow of another.’ Klaus Mann, nineteen years old, holds an entirely different opinion on this. That the budding writer currently stands in the shadow of his famous father, Thomas Mann, might have something to do with it. But why does Thomas reject him, as a son and as a person? What is Klaus doing wrong? He doesn’t dare to speak to his father on the subject but, instead, decides to write him a letter; a candid, confrontational letter. The letter turns into a gripping novel about a well-known family of writers and stage actors in the restless Munich of the beginning of the 20th century. But who is actually standing in the shadow of whom?
The media on One Mann: ‘Wonderful period piece on the artistic environment around the Mann family, in Germany, between the two world wars. By chance she meets Eveline, who recently lost her sixteen-year-old daughter to cancer. A special bond forms between them, one that Tessel doesn’t fully understand. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that Eveline is the only person who is not careful around her. And who doesn’t have time for politeness. Little by little, Tessel reveals what happened between her and Percival, a friend who turned out not to be a friend at all. Slowly but surely she changes her view of herself and the events.
