Ploegsma Publishers

Leopold was founded in 1923 and evolved into a children’s- and young-adult publishing house in the 1950’s. From baby books to books for young adults, from poetry to exceptional non-fiction, Leopold publishes for all ages. Leopold has a lot of collaborations with museums, different organizations and the government. The first children’s book ever published is still in print: Johan Fabricius’ Java Ho! The Adventures of Four Boys Amid Fire, Storm, and Shipwreck. Leopold hosts a lot of famous Dutch authors, for example the classic works of Tonke Dragt (The Letter for the King, The Secrets of the Wild Wood). Several popular brands are also published by Leopold, like Frog (Max Velthuijs) and Alfie the Werewolf (Paul van Loon). The beautiful Leopold picture books by renowned illustrators like Annemarie van Haeringen, Wouter van Reek and Ingrid Godon are taking a flight due to the fantastic teamwork with museums. Not only classic authors and popular brands are a big part of Leopold. A younger generation of authors and illustrators is building a vast oeuvre. Books like Zeb. (Gideon Samson & Joren Joshua) and Fright Night (Maren Stoffels) shake up the world of children’s literature.

Witte Leeuw Publishing house Witte Leeuw publishes trendy and cheerful books for children from 0 to 12 years old. From the books about Mouse and Bear by Pauline Baartmans and other cosy stories to read aloud, to the intriguing books about space and space travel by astronaut André Kuipers, Witte Leeuw has a book for everybody. Fiction as well as non-fiction books are published by Witte Leeuw. Examples of the latter are for instance practical photo- and notebooks, touch and feel books like Sweet Cuddles by Happy Horse, and sparkling friend-albums like the Bucketlist for Besties.

For well over a hundred years Ploegsma has been part of the Dutch publishing scene. The publishing house was founded in 1905 by Johannes Ploegsma and has been specialising in children’s books since the 1960’s: adventurous and humorous fiction and non-fiction books for children of all ages. These include many classic titles, such as the books by Astrid Lindgren (Pippi Longstocking) and Arnold Lobel (Frog and Toad), as well as books by contemporary and very popular authors like Mirjam Oldenhave (Mister Twister), Marjon Hoffman (Rosie’s Rules), Yvon Jaspers (Tess and Tommy), Reggie Naus (The Pirates Down the Street), Vivian den Hollander, Janny van der Molen and Caja Cazemier. Many of these authors have been translated. Even though a lot has changed in the last hundred years, Ploegsma’s love for beautiful books has not!

Condor Publishing house Condor mainly publishes funny and contemporary books for children from 7 to 12 years old. At Condor, you’ll find international bestselling authors like Dav Pilkey, Sue Townsend and Jason Reynolds, as well as some fascinating titles from the Netherlands itself. Non-fiction books about subjects such as LEGO, football and other sports are also well represented.

He tells the coolest stories and everyone wants to be his best friend. Thomas chooses Jake. From that moment on, weird things start to happen. Jake discovers suspicious footsteps near the secret hut. And who is sending him these strange letters? It’s time for Jake to get to the bottom of this. Even if it means going to the swamp, which is full of dangerous quicksand. His parents have also strictly forbidden him to go anywhere near it…

Selma Noort The Small House by the River

Joey heard Zaza’s voice, shaky and abnormally highpitched. ‘Joey, honey, we’re here. Mummy and Daddy. Can you hear me?’ Joey’s mouth was filled with grit. He was afraid to speak or cry. He was afraid to swallow. He didn’t even dare to breathe. Joey and Amber live with their family alongside the river. They swim and climb in the pear trees. But it’s getting more and more dangerous to live on the narrow dike. The traffic rushes past the houses, and one day a big truck slams into Joey’s bedroom…

Milan, Rosa, Bennie, Fatima and Prof are thrilled: they’re going on a football trip to Spain. But when there’s a volcanic eruption, the plane has to veer off course and the group lands in Sweden. Quite a bit colder than they’d anticipated. In Sweden they meet a football team that’s very similar to Chaos United – except better organized. Their clubhouse is made by IKEA, so it won’t fall apart. And when it comes to football, they seem to be on an entirely different level. Or is that just an illusion? In the third part of this comical Dutch graphic novel series, a leading role is set aside for Rosa. She’s going to show the Chaos team how it’s done: improvising while on the road…

Tonke Dragt The Battle for the Queen of Hearts

‘Who murdered the King of Hearts, at his wedding, in his own home?’ ‘I KNOW! cried the Jack of Spades, the Crown Prince of the mighty Kingdom of Spades, saying, ‘He, who did it, loves the Queen of Hearts... the King was murdered out of jealousy!

Fiction | 15 x 22 cm | 64 pages | November 2021 The press about The Battle for the Queen of Hearts: ‘A real Tonke Dragt tale, with important roles for nobility, courtly love, loyalty, mistaken identities (with the joker as the highest trump card). The adventure is cleverly constructed. The Hans Christian Andersen-like way in which Dragt transforms the figures in the cards into nobility – while maintaining their original spirit – is very strong.’ – Daily newspaper NRC Handelsblad ‘Unique novella about a card game coming to life, with warring brothers and mistaken identities. It showcases how consistent her work has been from the very beginning.’ – Daily newspaper de Volkskrant

During a holiday in 1955, the then unknown twentyfive-year old Tonke Dragt writes and illustrates a novella. Just having graduated from the Academy of Art in The Hague she brings the characters from a deck of cards to life. And these characters play their own game: who killed the King of Hearts and who will get the Queen of Hearts? The Battle for the Queen of Hearts is a humoristic adventure about glowing hearts, lies and deceit, deep dark dungeons and a duel – all within the rules of a card game. ◆

Imagine your next-door neighbours are pirates… And that they don’t live in an ordinary house, but in a kind of boat-shaped construction made from pieces of wreckage. They have a proper canon, which they actually fire for fun, and a guard shark swimming around their small moat. For years they used to sail the seven seas, but now they want to settle down. Captain Blunderbuss and his wife Betsy have a son: Billy. And then there is Grandpa Blunderbuss. He is the roughest pirate that ever lived, and people tell the wildest stories about him. Grandpa Blunderbuss is always thirsty, particularly for rum.
