Editor-In-Chief Yaira Orellana

In this issue, we touch on the subject of the current season: Winter. From Winter fashion, to winter skin care, we have reviewed it all. However, with this issue as with our previous two, we have concentrated on photographic art and creative editorials. This was the case with Twisted Wonderland. We tried to change things up and surround the shoot around art. As with every shoot done for our magazine, we are surrounded by very talented people, and am very thankful to be surrounded with such talent. I thank all involved: Terrance Antonio Photography, Stacy Howell Photography, Asa Pressley, and Collette Mruk. All of the Makeup artists, hair stylists, wardrobe, and the list goes on. Without your talents and dedication we wouldn’t have been able to make this issue what it is. I give special thanks to my husband and children who have been by my side through hours of sitting in front of the computer, writing articles, editing photos and putting this publication together. Also, a huge thanks to my best friend, Jamie Tran. She’s a very gifted person, and without those gifts, I would be lost. Thanks to M3 models, Tout, and Robin Lee models.

A huge thanks to Carmen Jordan and Titus Perry for a most artistic wardrobe provided by American Apparel for the “Twisted Wonderland” Shoot. They are truly some of the absolute best in the industry. Hair stylists such as Stephanie Grace, Shannon Yauilla and Tia hughes did an amazing job on the shoots for this magazine. Talented designers such as JLSnider and Suite 33 allowed us to grace our pages with their beautiful designs, and made our issue what it is. Thank you, and look forward to work with you in the future. Hope you enjoy this issue as much as I have. Be prepared for more to come your way as each issue will come packed with new editorials, and great images, so stay tuned. Sincerely,

BABY IT’S COLD OUTSIDE ... BUT WHAT ABOUT MY SKIN? Helpful tips for your winter skin care regimen from a licensed Esthetician by Chelsey Winford

Every winter, all of my clients want to know the same thing. “What should I be doing differently to care for my skin?” It’s a good question, considering how unique the conditions are compared to other seasons. The cold, brutal winds, and drier air create different challenges for your skin. Thankfully, there are many solutions. Let’s discuss.

Your Aresenal

Cold air automatically means air with less moisture in it. While we may not love the sweat and oil and that comes with heat, we hate the dry, dull, and flaky skin that winter brings. Small switch-ups in your products can help combat that. Have you been using a foaming cleanser, perhaps with exfoliating ingredients like salicylic or glycolic acids? Switch to a gentle, soap free cleanser. If your skin is prone towards being dry, try out a nourishing cream or hyrdrating gel cleanser. Do you typically use a facialscrub to exfoliate? Try something gentler, like a weekly or bi-weekly enzyme based exfoliant. I love Dermalogica’s Daily Microfoliant. I only use it twice a week, even though it’s gentle enough for daily thanks to powder form and rice enzyme base.

Your Routine

Minor tweaks in your routine can bring on BIG changes. Love long, hot, showers and baths? Switch to warm water to avoid moisture loss. Applying lotion or body oil immediately after a shower while skin is still damp locks the moisture in your skin. A good rule of thumb for winter lotions is that you should have to either scoop or squeeze it. Check out The Body Shop’s body butters. They are super rich and moisturizing, and come in an array of yummy scents. Ever tried a serum? Layering a hydrating gel serum under your normal moisturizer will up the water retention in your skin, keeping it soft and glowy all day. The extra time is well worth the results. Check out Glo-therapeutics B5 hydrating gel. It won’t clog your pores and is good with all skin types.

The Great Outdoors

It’s cold, you’re bundled up... so you skip the spf? No!! You could get a sunburn even on a cloudy, rainy day. Cold weather is no exception. Whether it be a traditional sunscreen, a tinted moisturizer with at least 15 protection, or a mineral foundation with spf, get your coverage in somewhere. The lack of outdoor activity can make your skin sluggish and dull. Try to stay active, nothing gives you a glow like a good old-fashioned workout, indoors or out. Also, taking a D3 supplement is essential. It is the only vitamin that sunshine causes our body to produce, and it is important to our overall health and the beauty of our skin. It even combats fatigue and depression!

Your Secret Weapon

Sometimes you just need a extra boost. A daily self tanner can give you a subtle sun kissed glow when you just can’t handle another day of hibernation. Jane Iredale’s new formula, Tantasia, has a special formula that actually customizes its color to natural skin tone. Illuminating moisturizers are also a great option.

Hope these tips keep you glowing till Spring!

Inner Beauty

You are what you eat, and it shows up in your skin no matter what the season. Just because it isn’t hot out doesn’t mean you can slack off on water intake. Pack your diet with nutrient and vitamin rich foods. I even sneak spinach (which is loaded with almost every good thing for your skin and body you can imagine) into my morning smoothies. Acidophilus is another essential supplement that helps purify your blood and help your digestive system, leading to clearer skin. Another good trick is hot lemon water. It’s easy, delicious, purifies your liver, and staves off infections. Less sickness equals less medicine which leads to “skin ickiness”. An all-around good thing.

DO YOU SUFFER FROM WWSS? What in the world is WWSS? It’s an acronym Le Rouge Editors came up with. It stands for “Winter Weather Skin Syndrome”. Do you suffer from dry itchy skin during the cold season? If so, your skin doesn’t have to look as unsightly as the weather is outside.

The arid weather tends to bring uncomfortable dryness to the skin of your face, hands and feet. For some it gets as bad as flaking, cracking, and even eczema. If your condition matches the latter, you may need to consult a specialist. If it’s just general dryness, you may want to try several options we’ve listed.

Moisturize More You may need to switch up from the creams you usually use in the Spring or Summer. Try switching to an oil based moisturizer during the Winter. The oil will create a protective layer on the skin that retains more moisture than a cream or lotion.

Hydrate Drink your water! Remember drink eight 8oz glasses a day. Water is good for your overall health and the skin of someone who is severely dehydrated will benefit from fluids. But the average person’s skin does not reflect the amount of water being drunk.

Lessen up the superhot baths! The intense heat of a shower or bath breaks down the lipid barriers in the skin, which can lead to a loss of moisture. Also, shorten the amount of time you spend in the water.

1 CARE FOR AGING HAIR Many of us think that the lines of

your face are the delators of our age. Well, we’ve got news for you. Faded, damaged locks scream “Yes, I can be your mama!” Keep on reading to receive the best tips for covering grays, adding gloss, and fattening dull strands..

44

PLUMP IT UP

You want to use products that will help give your hair a thicker look and not weigh it down. You’ll want to scan the product labels for words such as “thickening” and “Volumizing”. Take supplements such as Biotin (1,000 micrograms). This is a type of B vitamin and you may also like to try 500 milligrams of niacin a day. This latter mineral gives hair strength; it also has many other benefits. You may want to look into using topical hair loss solutions such as Women’s Rogaine. This product contains a nutrient that encourages hair growth, and can slow down hair loss.

2

TURN UP THE VA-VA VOLUME

The easiest way to keep hair from looking thin and lifeless is by adding a great texturizer. There are many to choose from. One product that our editor team tried is Nioxin Volumizing Reflectives- Bodyfying foam. After the first use it really helped the hair appear to have more body, and gives curls a great bounce. Another plus is that its alcohol free.

3

4

LET IT SHINE

As strange as it may sound, the best way to let your locks shine their light is by adding heat. Yes, you read it right, HEAT. As long as it’s done the right, you’ll achieve a brilliant mane without damage. Prior to applying any heat, apply a heat protection spray. When using the blow dryer, add the nozzle and aim it down the hair shaft. Complete the look by running a flat iron over strands to seal the cuticle and give hair that glassy surface. You can achieve the same gloss by using a curling iron.

DON’T LET THE GRAY SHOW

You may need to avoid certain styles that you were once used to. Examples of such styles are sharp parts and slick back styles. These show roots on full blast. It’s recommended that thicker textures and wavy do’s make grays harder to spot. If you want soft coverage of the pale strands you may use a quick fix rood cover which acts a lot like makeup for the hair. For a more permanent fix, you may try a permanent color kit. Many of these come with a slanted brush to apply on the roots. You may find these at any drugstore.

5

NOURISH

The tools we use to make our hair look good actually cause harm. Wash hair depending on your texture. If you tend to wash daily, try it every other day. Use shampoos with words such as “anti-breakage”, “strengthening”, “restorative”, etc. They hold ingredients that help against damage. You may want to use a deep conditioning mask or treatment once a week. These are treatments designed to nourish hair more than a regular conditioner which leave a smoothing agent that will stay on for days.

Being a Paul Mitchell Educator, I am partial to their fabulous products. But, being an educated stylist, I do have my other favorites as well. One being Joico’s shampoo and conditioning line. They smell fabulous and they work like magic! One product I have always been partial to is their deep conditioner, the K-Pak Reconstructor. I have to say that I have used this product on my own damaged hair, and its repairing abilities are amazing! I swear by this product and have recommended it to many clients until recently. Joico has come out with a new wonder product called K-Pak Revitaluxe. It is a Bio-Advanced Restorative Treatment. Revitaluxe features a bio-advanced Keratin Peptide Complex, which is a blend of Bio-Mimetic Peptides, Keratin Amino Acids, Jojoba Oil, and Aloe Extract that dramatically transforms dry, damaged hair. This advanced technology: • • •

Delivers complete restoration and hydration. Corrects years worth of damage while preventing future damage instantly. Leaves hair stronger, softer and more moisturized

It is THAT good! Plus, with each application hair becomes stronger, softer, more hydrated with improved elasticity. I recently performed a little experiment and did some damage to my own hair to see if this product really is all they say it is, and it is! I can safely say that it lives up to the hype. My hair is incredibly softer, shinier and the damaged area has been repaired after only a few days of use. I can’t wait to see what prolonged use does to my hair! K-Pak Revitaluxe is the first of its kind: a luxury hair treatment clinically proven to INSTANTLY correct years of damage and protect against future damage. And not to mention it smells fantastic too!!

NEW YEAR

NEW LIFESTYLE ASK YOURSELF 3 QUESTIONS

Forget the Resolution

This January 1, I ask you rather than make a Resolution, why not make a lifestyle change? The problem with resolutions is they are made and broken normally all within the first few weeks. Why? The pressure to change and 1. How many times have you set out with a plan to attack January 1 with a fierceness that meet a goal becomes overwhelming and a burden before we ever reap any benefits of can’t be beat? our diet and fitness routines. 2. How many times have you started out with Here are my tips to break the cycle of resoluyour goal in mind and the date set for when tions and replace with goals and a lifestyle you will reveal your new hot body? change that is guaranteed to keep you on track 365 days of 2012. 3. How many years have you had to repeat questions 1 and 2? Before you set out to make a New Year’s Resolution, I ask you 3 simple questions:

Ditch All or Nothing Mentality

Every step toward a healthier lifestyle pushes your towards your end goal. If you have a moment where you stray from your diet/fitness routine: accept it, acknowledge it, and move on! Never allow yourself to “get back on track tomorrow”. I urge you to “get back on track immediately”. 68

Drop the “Deadline date”

Set a goal but not a deadline. Deadlines are due dates that if you don’t meet then you fail, so if you set a deadline to lose 50lbs by June 1 but June 1 arrives and you’ve lost 45lbs does that mean you’ve failed? Absolutely not!! I prefer to adapt the Goal Date mindset. If you have a goal in mind but don’t quite meet that, then you haven’t failed because you are still pushing forward. Remember every pound lost is a reason to celebrate.

If you go full force from no activity to a full week’s worth, you are setting yourself up to fail. You will have much better results if you allow yourself to build momentum with fitness. Share your goals with your friends and family. Ask them to hold you accountable and request their support. Scheduling outdoor activities is a great way to get your exercise in, spend time with your loved ones, and keep you on track.

Do Not Start on January 1st

Lastly, be kind to yourself. Expect that you will have bad days, weak moments, and you will fall off the wagon. Do not beat yourself up about it nor feel guilty. Get right back on track! Put your game face on, refocus, and push toward your goals. When faced with a situation you need to ask yourself, “Is ________ pushing me toward my goal or away from it?”. You will know how to handle it depending on what your answer to the question was.

Start on December 31st or January 2nd. This way you aren’t starting on the Resolution day, you are starting on YOUR day. Make this journey about you and what works for you. Do not try to make the statistical American January 1st fit into your life, instead make your first day work for you.

Begin a New Lifestyle Starting a new diet just causes people to cringe from head to toe. It makes everyone grit their teeth and that feeling of dread starts to bubble up. Changing your lifestyle however is a completely different venue. You are changing how you eat, how you exercise, and how you view your new journey. Lifestyle changes are just that, lifestyle changes. Changing how you eat is much more beneficial than dieting to lose a few pounds. Eat clean foods, exercise more days than not, and be proud of each milestone you cross.

I close with 1 last question to ask yourself in the next few months when the journey gets tedious: How bad do you want it? Stay Active, Stay Strong, Stay Committed. Crystal Honeycutt 100lb Weight Loss Success Story Motivational Coach ISSA Certified Personal Trainer Certified Fitness Instructor www.getwickedphit.com

Now here are my tips to make the New Year work for you, instead of against you: Baby steps equal great strides. Tackle one new food a day. Gradually change your taste buds ather than cause shock by a 100% change. Strive for 3 days of exercise each week, gradually working up to 5.

THE ART OF BELLYDANCE For those that shun the gym, and usually keep their sweating outdoors, the brisk winter weather might deter you from hitting the pavement. Have you been considering what workouts to do while you’re kept cooped up inside? Consider the art of Belly Dance. Also known as the Middle Eastern Dance is what many use as an alternative, fun way to exercise. 70

The name of this dance form itself is a misnomer. Not only are the abdominal muscles worked, but also the pelvis, trunk, spine, neck, arms and legs. It’s a no-impact form of exercise. A bellydancer uses her quadriceps, hamstrings and glutes to hold steady as she performs hip movements. The amount of impact to the knees and ankles is minimal.

One of the oldest forms of Dance Originally danced by women for women as a means of entertainment, it is one of the oldest forms of dance in the world. Certain dance moves were specific to ensure the woman’s body was well prepared for child birth. This art form also helps build the back muscles evenly. The movements involved exercise the back muscles, and they are exercised evenly. Strong back muscles prevent back injuries, and promote good posture. Even your arms get a work out! Belly Dancers have to hold their arms up for long periods of time, and it actually takes quite a lot of strength to perform arm movements slowly and gracefully. Another benefit of the dance is that as the abdominal area is being worked out, it aids digestion. The moves that involve rolling the belly and swaying the torso. This helps food move along the digestive system.

Any form of exercise will help with this, but belly dance is especially helpful. If you’re someone that thinks you can’t belly dance, think again! ANYONE can do this. Any size, age or skill level. Taking a belly dancing class is a great way to relieve stress, increase a positive body image and self-esteem, and burn over 300 calories an hour. There are many other benefits to this dance, along with the great workout, and awesome outfits. Lookup your local Belly Dance class, and have a fun, invigorating, inside workout! Saleema is the dancer in these images. She gives instruction on the art of belly dance in Columbia, SC .

71

Many different props are able to be used. Along with the fun wardrobe. The use of props will increase the intensity of the workout.

72

Suspendisse consectetur mauris vBelly dance also exudes femininity. The different styles of wardrobe and jewelry that can be used is an artform in itself.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

WITH MASSAGE THERAPY

By Jarrod Fritz, LMT

T hese days everyone seems to be leading a fast-paced, stress-filled lifestyle. To cope with the stressors some people make poor choices such as Not only does Massage Therapy help us relax, but it helps our physical and emotional health too!

74

energy drinks, alcohol, caffeine, and even over-the-counter drugs. These substances, when overused, can be destructive to the mind and body. What if there was something out there that was natural, safe, and extremely helpful in relieving stress, would you try it? Well massage therapy may be the answer for you and with the amount of licensed massage therapists and massage facilities increasing so rapidly, that answer is becoming easily accessible. Massage therapy is not only natural but has been used since the dawning of time in cultures around the world including the ancient orient, Romans and Greeks, Native Americans, and even primitive African tribes. Massage is instinctive and in our human nature. Think about when you bump your arm or stub your toe, what do you do immediately after? You rub the area to soothe the pain. What does a mother do when their child is upset? She rubs their back to calm them down. Massage has many benefits that will positively affect us mentally, physically, and emotionally. When we get stressed our heads get clouded and it becomes much more difficult to think and concentrate. Headaches and migraines are often a side effect of this stress as well. When we get stressed we tend to react the same as we do when we are scared and we tighten up our muscles in defense, especially the muscles in our neck. When muscles tighten they limit blood flow and in this case the limit is to the brain. The brain functions best when it is nourished with oxygen delivered by the blood, so it’s easy to understand that if the tight muscles are cutting off the nutrient supply to the brain that we would not only have headaches, but we wouldn’t be able to think clearly either. Massage helps to break down the tension in the muscles of the neck allowing the normalized blood flow back to the brain, which eases headache pain and allows you to concentrate, focus, and think more easily.

Relieves Pain

It’s not just a Treat

Pain not only hurts, but also drains our energy levels and affects our motivation. Tight muscles in the body cause limitations in our normal movement patterns and when we go to move, the limitations cause tears in the muscle fibers and then pain. It’s a natural reaction of the body to tighten up the muscles in defense when we feel pain, so it’s easy to see how this cycle can repeat itself until the body is in complete disarray. Massage therapy is essentially passive stretching of the muscle fibers which relieve tension that causes pain. In addition, the flushing movements of massage helps to promote the elimination of toxins and other wastes that are built up in the body that can cause pain and dysfunction. Tension relief and waste removal reduces pain and allows us to move and feel better.

Massage therapy has been depicted on TV and movies with candles, incense, and a very calm and relaxed atmosphere where people “treat” themselves on special occasions. Now that you understand how much more massage therapy has to offer and how it can be vital in your general well-being you can see that massage is way more than just a “treat” but an investment in your health. There are many different types and styles of massage out there, so do your research to find which will best suit you. Find a therapist that provides what you are looking for and before you know it you will move, feel, and be better!

Relieves our Mood Nothing seems to put us in a more depressive, saddened mood then being in pain, whether it is physical or emotional pain. Emotionally, we become drained and have a tendency to have a negative perspective. If you will recall the idea of the mother rubbing the child’s back, human touch has a very soothing and relaxing effect. The nervous system responds to positive touch, such as massage, with the release of certain hormones that give us a feeling of euphoria, that is happiness and joy. That reaction in addition to pain relief puts us into a positive state of mind which in turn attracts more positive people and positive energy. NATURAL SKIN & HAIR PRODUCT REVIEW All Natural or Organic products are the next big thing. People are taking into consideration the health of our environment as well as the health of our bodies. As a society, we are now realizing that natural is better all around. In the beauty industry this is not the exception. Our Editor-In-Chief has reviewed several products and has the 411 on them right here. Activated Antioxidant Infusion When it comes to skin care, I’ve tried just about everything out there. Anti-aging, anti- acne, a mixture of both, department store brands, off brands, drugstore brands, you name it! After trying Astara’s products just after a few days, I finally saw the light. These products are a raw botanical skin care line. Chemical free and the ingredients are all natural and chosen to support the body’s intrinsic healing ability. After using the Activated Antioxidant infusion, I noticed that my skin was very soft and supple. This moisturizer has a light creamy base and is fast absorbing, so it does not leave a sticky residue. I noted an improvement in the firmness of my skin. I have now found a product that’s all natural and works like a charm. Additional reviews of Astara’s products can be found on our website www.lerougemag.com

Sibu Beauty – Sea Buchthorn Balancing Facial Cleanser This product is also all natural. It’s great for every age. The cleanser is light with soft exfoliating beads, non- foaming and wonderful for makeup removal. Leaves your skin feeling fresh, and light. It has a great citrus and invigorating smell. We’ve reviewed other products by Sibu Beauty, and you may find it on our website.

Collagen M.D. Beauty from within, that’s what this product is about. Instead of painful injections on your face, you take the supplement by mouth. The collagen is digested and rapidly absorbed. Not only does it help your skin, but also includes a product that improves the health of your joints. So it not only improves your external beauty, but your internal health. The product comes in a fine powder form, has no taste, so when you mix it with juice it doesn’t give a funny taste. As with any supplement, it takes time to see the results. Since, this is the case; I’ll do a follow up product review on our website to let you know how this product is working.

Mixed Chicks Leave-In-Conditioner Don’t let the name fool you! This prod-

uct is for all with curly or wavy hair. As a naturally curly haired person, I must say this product gets two thumbs up! This rich leave-in conditioner does not weigh down hair. Leaves hair shiny, lightweight and leaves your curls looking super-hot! This is a product I will continue to use. The shampoo and conditioner has also been reviewed, and you may see this on www. lerougemag.com

PHOTOGRAPHER SPOTLIGHT He is a man of man of many hats. Some which include: Fashion and Beauty Photographer, Makeup Artist, Fashion Stylist, fashion show and pageant Choreographer, Writer, Director…and the list goes on.

In this issue we are spotlighting Russell Adair.

He is a man of many hats. Some which include Fashion and Beauty Photographer, Makeup Artist, Fashion Stylist, fashion show and pageant Choreographer, Writer, Director…and the list goes on. His work has been published on national campaigns and has traveled the world capturing beautiful images everywhere he goes. We asked him a series of questions and this is what he said:

96

Q: When did you begin your work in the photographic industry?

A: In my early teens.

I am so grateful I fell in love with photography early on. I began by looking at pictures in magazines. By the time I was a teen, I had developed an immense appreciation for the art of line, color, proportion, and movement. I noticed that I began to see things in a different way. Certain people bean to have an engaging presence to me natural elegance, impeccable style, unquestionable sex appeal, and unique personality. My quest was to successfully capture those images on film.

Q: What inspired you to begin photography?

A: The catalyst was a Newsweek magazine with the late Richard Avedon as cover feature and

several page stories. After reading the article, I knew that was what I was trying to become, it was an instant sensation. Along with the pictures, fashion influence, and development it all became a reality to me. I presented my work to agencies and there was an immediate positive response. The work lead to shoots in Aruba, Mexico City, Curacao, Toronto , Canada and more. Photography led to even working as a makeup artist, stylist on commercials, music videos, documentaries, still photographer on films, I directed 3 TV commercials, and 2 Fashion Show productions at the Metropolitan Convention Center which I directed, choreographed and wrote.

Q: What do you love most about what you do?

A: Transformation and seeing the response after you have applied all the makeup, styling, smoke and mirrors. It’s astonishing! Like photographing something for a time capsule!

Q: Tell us how you got into jewelry design? A:

I started when I was a teen making a few pieces for my mom and sister for test shoots. Then I didn’t pursue it again for many years until I was asked to coach a girl set to compete in a beauty pageant, I was looking for a specific style of earring to match her evening gown that I couldn’t find, so I decided to try an make it myself. It turned out well so I decided to continue to make more pieces; it just took off like a rocket. The sky’s the limit!

Q: What can we look forward to with your future work?

A: There is a cultural shift in the world of fashion that I embrace, and this affects your individual style. Now there is Facebook and the ability to reach people worldwide. I continue to be influenced by culture, people, and places. I will continue to discover and photograph unforgettable faces. Ultimately I will continue to be a motivating force to those I inspire, develop, mentor, and elevate excellence and integrity in the world of imagery, fashion, and beauty.

Model Spotlight

LILY SYKORA

COVER MODEL SPOTLIGHT “ I used to be very insecure with myself and wanted to be the so-called “normal”, wearing only Abercrombie to “fit in” and wanting to look like everyone else. It wasn’t until I started modeling that I truly found myself and my own identity.”

I

am originally from Alexandria, VA. I moved to Charleston when I was 7. I am half Slovakian. I used to be very insecure with myself and wanted to be the so-called “normal”, wearing only Abercrombie to “fit in” and wanting to look like everyone else. It wasn’t until I started modeling that I truly found myself and my own identity. I have been interested in modeling and fashion since as long as I can remember. I was the 8 year old practicing my runway walk on the play ground while everyone else was on the swings. I would be inside watching reruns of ANTM while all the kids in the neighborhood were playing hide and seek. I think as I grew older, I lost that sense of being an individual to all the pressures that adolescents face and I think that’s when I thought it was only acceptable to dress and act like everyone else. My dad is a pianist, so I had the luxury of piano lessons from early on. I had perfected 2 Bach pieces by the third grade. I have always been “beyond my years” and more mature than most kids my age and I associate and attribute that to my parents upbringing of me. My mom has been taking me to spiritual yoga classes since as long as I can remember. That has been a big part of my life. I have two Pomeranians, Hope and Miss Pearl. As well as a younger brother.

LE ROUGE 120

The first time I sparked an interest in modeling was when I was scouted as a child, but my mom wasn’t too keen on the idea at the time. But that moment has always persisted with me. In January of 2011 I started classes with Millie Lewis to get educated on what it really takes. I was then in August of 2011 accepted in the Southeast Talent Search with CDMT. I do not know how legit they were, but if nothing else, it was most definitely a major confidence booster. The perfectionist in me was always too scared of rejected to put myself out there until that. Overcoming that, I submitted my pictures into Robin Lee models and talent, where I was signed the same day! I owe Robin everything for taking a chance with me, as that made me realize that I am an individual and that has allowed me to accept it. I also recently went to a call for Columbia Style Week and made it! My goals for modeling are simple. I just want to gain more confidence in myself as a person. Getting jobs, obviously, is also a top priority. :) My personality comes to life in front of the camera and that’s all that matters to me. As far as the future, I would absolutely love nothing more than have a job in fashion, but if that doesn’t work out, I want to model my way through college. I would love to be either something in the fashion industry, a dietitian, or a therapist to help others, especially young girls find that there is much more to them than the thrills of being accepted. The thing I love most about this industry is the fact that I can let out all my passion in front of the camera and transform into pretty much anything. It gives me a chance to get out my own head and focus on turning myself into a photographer’s art. Modeling is most definitely an art-form.

I Am Nicole COVER MODEL SPOTLIGHT

My name is Nicole and I was born in Savanna,

Georgia. I moved to South Carolina around the age of 5 and have been here ever since. I am the oldest of 4 children two brothers and a sister. Family means everything to me. I wouldn’t be the person I am today if it weren’t for them. My father passed away on July 29, 2004. Unlike most people we did not inherit anything when he passed. This made me realize life was too short and I had to strive for the things that are important to me in this life. There is no time like the present because tomorrow is NEVER promised. I went from having everything I needed to not having nearly anything. I now know what it means to struggle, but I would not take back one day because now I appreciate life and what I have a lot more. If I did not endure the battles, I wouldn’t be able to grasp the true value of the lessons.

Modeling was not always a dream of mine. When I was growing up I was considered a tom boy. I did not believe I had the look or the confidence to be a model but as I grew older, trying to find myself as woman, I became very interested in modeling. I “played” around with modeling for a couple years but nothing really serious ever came from it. I have been to a lot of open castings calls where you make it but then they want you to pay for everything under the sun. I was always told that if they want you they will pay to have you. Being in South Carolina I really did not think I had a shot. I never really had the nerve to just pack up and leave because it wasn’t that easy for me. After my dad passed away I have always worked 3 and 4 jobs to provide for my family. I did not have the chance to go to college because struggling to find some type of stability became more important. I almost gave up on my dream with everything going on I didn’t think that it would be possible. Everything that you go through only makes you stronger. Patience is surely a virtue and now I can proudly say I am blessed with this opportunity again and I will work hard to achieve my dream of becoming the next top model. So world look out because here I have arrived! 123
