Welcome to the launch edition of the Pure ART360 Magazine. Created especially for you for the love of art. It is scientifically recognised that art makes us feel better… At a time when many of the world’s galleries and museums are open on a very limited basis if at all, it serves as a salient reminder to all of us as to the importance of art, artists and culture in our lives. They contribute significantly to our wellbeing, happiness, meaning and purpose. Art and historical artefacts can elicit feelings of awe and wonder, inspire and motivate our choices and decisions, broaden our perceptions of the world and what is possible. Art is scientifically recognised as having the power to move, engage and awaken our emotions and inspire and instigate feelings of pleasure and joyfulness akin to falling in love. ART360 has been developed during lockdown to ensure we all have the opportunity to love and be loved by art, even in these strangest of times. This magazine is packed full of inspirational contemporary art, created by living artists. We hope you will enjoy and your curiosity will be peaked sufficiently to take a closer look – view the artist’s websites, follow them on social media and contact them directly to discover more and buy. “How tempting is the abyss of art and its infinitive fringe, that begs for interpretation.” Born in 1963 in York, Maine, Daniel grew up in Naples, a rural town within the vast, quiet spaces of Central Maine. One of seven children in a creative, artistic family, he taught himself to paint at a very young age and used his art as a method of reflective play throughout his childhood. He studied mechanical and architectural design at the Central Maine Vocational Technical Institute. While still in school, he applied his dimensional skills and passion for architecture in the family’s design and construction business.

He then turned his talents to the commercial art field, working as an architectural and commercial illustrator for a number of multinational corporations. Merriam’s illustrations received numerous awards including several first-place Broderson Awards (the annual Maine advertising industry award) and the first-place New England Scholastics Press Association Award (for editorial cartooning.) Yet his true passion remained painting the expression of his own vision. In 1987 Daniel shifted his focus solely to fine art and had his first solo exhibition at Abacus Gallery in Maine.

In the same year, the artist received an Honorary Masters of Humane Letters from the University of New England in recognition of the potential social contribution of his work. Since that time, Merriam has had over one hundred exhibitions throughout the United States, Europe and the Middle East. His life’s work has been compiled in three impressive volumes: The Impetus of Dreams, The Eye of a Dreamer, and the most recent Taking Reality By Surprise. These catalogues reisonnés are inducted into the permanent archives of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the National Museum of American Illustration, the Peninsular Museum of Art, and the Parrish House Museum. His work is also included in the public collections of The Riverside Museum of Art, CA; Merrill Lynch, CA; The Gesundheit! Institute, VA; the Manhattan Club, NY, among others. Complimentary to the many insights Daniel shared in our exclusive interview, here he gives us his views on selling on the internet among other things; INTERNET SELLING I do link to all of the usual social media platforms. Their effectiveness comes and goes as they change their revenue efforts. In the early days you could get organic viral growth, but now, most of that gets intercepted. Once they’ve got your audience coming through their portal, they control whether or not you and they connect. It is a ramping curve of pay to play. You must maintain email and phone contacts as your primary means of keeping in touch with clients. Even direct email services like constant contact will usually fail at getting

your announcements out. We still need to reach out in person to make sure we aren’t being screened. Optimizing a website has been a popular buzz phrase, but it has little meaning unless you reach your target audience and find a way to convert those views into sales. Most larger corporate internet marketing programs use smaller grass roots organic content like mine, to create circulation back to their holding companies sites, or simply pay to have you filtered out of the competition. Today’s social media drivers develop underground cult like participation. I’m not sure how many of those participants would be potential art collectors. I’m constantly being asked to produce

content such as videos, to feed the social media beast. It’s entertaining and can result in sales but over time we can become a slave to it. I’m more keen on keeping my nose to the canvas rather than the screen. MY FAVOURITE THING ABOUT BEING AN ARTIST IS…. I know what I’m supposed to be doing. So many people aren’t happy with their careers. I’ve known many wannabe artist’s who weren’t passionate about any particular creative ideas, only the idea of being an artist. For me, I’ve always known what I want to produce. It’s a destiny filled with lots of free choices. Other great things about being an artist are I get to meet many incredible people from all walks of life, from top to bottom. I’m my own boss. I can express myself anytime I feel the urge and it will be contemplated by many. I’m always on the look out for qualities in life, and

see the world through a very pleasurable lens.

MY ADVICE FOR ASPIRING ARTISTS The worst thing for me in being an artist is my work is labour intensive. I’ve spent countless hours, and many decades, in solitude, physically disciplining my eyes, hands and mind, to produce things of the highest quality I can achieve. Those years take a toll on the body. Much of the great art in the world has required great sacrifice. WHAT ELSE WOULD I HAVE BEEN? A musician (although that’s still art) an actor (that’s still art). I’ve worked in architecture, which very well could have led me into real estate development. As a young man, I’d taken a turn into journalism. I still may turn my pen toward that one.

First determine if you have any talent. Then decide if you have ambition. Then determine if you have enough discipline. Now all you need is time and materials. Make your market in the bull years, and make your inventory in the bear ones. Do what is in your heart because if you’re a good artist, that’s your best contribution to the world. Lastly, you will need to be a good business person. Nobody else will look after your entire career, especially not like you will yourself. MY ADVICE TO MY YOUNGER SELF WOULD BE Get started earlier on the pursuit of my biggest goals because you will run out of time before you know it.

Some advice I was given and have followed is, don’t let anyone else tell you what to paint. Always show your best work. Always do your best work. Collect on your accounts receivable within 30 days, and never discount your art. Your paintings are like currency and you mustn’t feel insecure in their face value. My life and work has been an example of what freedom of expression can afford us all. I’m fortunate to have lived in a time when I could manage the creation of a body of work that’s intended to enlighten the hearts of others. I believe each accomplished artist leaves behind a living history of the social consciousness unique to both their time and place in which they thrived. Few other mediums speak to the vividness of our human experience.

SOMETHING UNEXPECTED ABOUT ME I’ve worn all of the hats in my paintings. These images are not entirely fiction, as I’ve lived out my life through my art. My early orientations started on the tails of surrealism, delving into the dimensions of the human psyche. My analytic appetite teamed with my divergent thinking style spawns the very thoughts Freud and Jung argued over. That bridge between linear science and multidimensionality beacons a belief in spirituality. How tempting is the abyss of art and its infinitive fringe, that begs for interpretation. With over 30 years experience as a Psychologist in the business world, in 2016 Leonie shifted gears, bringing quantum science to the field of emotional and physical growth and wellbeing. Your energy is the primary key to your emotional health and to your physiology. If you’re stuck, can’t see the wood for the trees, have run out of options, shifting your energy is the answer you are looking for. Here in her own words Leonie describes her personal journey into energy medicine:

“I was born in 1966 in Worksop, a place I know so little about I had to Google what county it’s in - Nottinghamshire apparently. As a child my family were always on the go, never in one house longer than 2 years. We lived in many homes in and around Oxfordshire, Warwickshire, and what was Westmorland, now Cumbria. My father was a Nuclear Engineer. He was always working away from home, often in far distant countries, sharing the engineering expertise that used to be our British Heritage. I schooled in whatever school my

mum deemed fit for myself and my twin. I have four brothers, one of which is my fraternal twin, Giles. With such a large family, a stay at home mum and one income, there wasn’t the money for a private education, but it didn’t matter as we all loved to learn. Our average family IQ is nearly 200. My twin and I were seen as childhood science geniuses. We were taken out of school at 12 to join a special University. We hated it and chose to ‘school’ as normally as possible. Giles and I were the youngest by over 5 years. If you were to ask my brothers they’d say we were spoiled. Funny - I don’t remember it that way. As twins we were inseparable. We had our own language, and kept ourselves to ourselves. We were best friends for each other as we moved from school to school, with barely enough time to make friends with our other classmates. We loved to do what we called ‘magic’. Giles would cycle places. I would stay home, but travel with him in my mind. I always knew where he’d been and what he’d seen. We found it very easy to ‘astral travel’. We experimented with pyramid power, and had some incredibly spooky experiences with the Ouija board! I always saw spirits. At 2 years of age we lived in an ancient 12th century thatched cottage. I regularly saw people ‘walk / float’ by, where the old staircase used to be. One day I decided to follow with no understanding of laws of physics. At 2 years old I had no limits to what I could do so I simply floated after them. My mum saw me, and minutes later the local vicar was round to exorcise me.

I got my doctorate in Psychology at just 21. I studied at Bath University then Kent, specialising in Criminal Psychology. My first job was with Scotland Yard. I was one of the earliest ‘profilers’, which was fascinating, but my tender age and lack of experience did not serve me well. Murder victims – bodies – proved all too gruesome. After just 18 months I knew I had to leave or never sleep again with the nightmares. I had a passion for understanding myself and others, but was lured by what seemed to me like ‘huge amounts of money’ into the land of BLUE CHIP CORPORATE. We had very little money growing up and having material things felt like the ‘thing to do’. I was caught in the ‘I’ll be happy when I have...‘ loop. Always after the next promotion, a bigger house, amazing holidays. But when I achieved these goals the pleasure was short lived. I loved using Psychology in business, but I also knew I was not living in alignment - I had abandoned my purpose. It surprises me to look back and see the years I spent on my personal journey towards financial and business achievement. I was stuck in a high performing life that in reality, felt bereft of meaning. It wasn’t until my late 40s that I finally understood that I had another calling, and I knew that happiness was an ‘inside job’; that the only way to be the real me, was to return to the energy healing that had saved my own young life. And the reason I am so surprised about how long it took me to figure this out ....? I was bullied, I was raped, I was diagnosed with an incurable illness, and I actually

drowned, all before I was in my midtwenties. My life was challenging, dotted with significant emotional events and huge opportunities to grow and to learn. But my choices were driven by a childhood fear of not having enough money, and of not being good enough. I ran away from my truth out of fear rather than embracing life from a place of love. My first encounter with energy medicine was at just 19 years old. Studying at University I was starting to think the student lifestyle was taking its toll. Late nights, poor food, stressing out over exams. No wonder I always lacked energy and felt tired and sick all the time. It’s normal to feel aches and pains, to struggle out of bed right? Wrong! Routine blood tests showed quite a different picture. The next few moments are still surreal to me, misted over with time, and fogged with emotion. The University doctor looked me in the eye and dropped his tone to a gentle whisper: “I’m sorry Miss Evans (my maiden name), the tests show that you have acute myelogenous leukaemia. It’s at an advanced stage already. We need to do more tests … but from what we see here, I’d like to prepare you for the worst” The short story is I learned I had about 6 months to live. A huge shock but maybe this was the first moment that I began to see things clearly. I felt my extraordinary self stir inside me. • I knew I wanted to live • I knew I had something to offer the world • I knew medical science was not always right

Always a spiritual being and an explorer, I read, I researched, I reached out to others who had gone through this and come out the other side. I loved to meditate and I soon realised that I was so well equipped to manifest my own health. I created my own ‘Miracle Meditations’, focusing on a pure light cleansing and healing all the cells in my body. I saw my own body, free of pathogens. I felt calm and powerful. I felt energy shift inside my body. I started to instinctively move energy, release blockages, to power up the organs that need help all with my own hands. Somehow knowing where to touch, and what to do. •

I slept

I meditated

•

I shifted energy with my hands

•

I ate a special diet of raw living food

•

I meditated some more

•

I laughed

•

I was totally focused

And this ordinary woman made the extraordinary come to life. MY MIRACLE … Against the Doctors prognosis, I was completely free of disease in just 6 months! I still had blood tests every few months but the leukaemia never returned. What more proof did I need; I knew I had stumbled on something that seemed miraculous. It was a wonderful feeling and I didn’t let this feeling go for a few years. Purely by chance, holidaying with an American boyfriend after graduating I was

I no longer regret my years following money and business acumen. I learned so much, and enjoyed living in different countries and continents. Those years gave me hardship and highs, loves and heartaches, I learned what it was like to live ‘out of alignment’ with my true self and I am experienced in life now. I see the bigger picture. I live simply, surrounded by love, giving love and embracing my life from a space of love. Entranced by the cycle of growth and decay, Louisa captures the details on beautiful smooth Strathmore paper using ultra sharp pencils and graphite powder. It’s quiet in the studio, distanced from the world as she looks ever closer at plants, insects and birds. Texture, shadows, silhouettes and movement created with marks and tone, it’s rarely about the colour. As well as membership of the Free Painters and Sculptors and the Society of Graphic Fine Art, Louisa is a Fellow of the Society of Botanical Artists. She has links to the Royal West of England Academy, Sevenoaks Visual Arts Forum, the Cranbrook Art Show and Pure Arts Group and currently sells her work via selected Galleries. Her prizewinning drawings are held in private collections internationally and she is regularly accepted to Open Exhibitions in London and beyond.

Born in the West Midlands and now living and working from his studio deep in the Kent countryside, all aspects of the natural world inspire Jonathans artwork. Working in clay, he enjoys the challenge of creating from both the real and imagined. Through his close observation and manipulation of materials, Jonathan is able to create detail and texture or surface bas-relief on his sculpture, which are hand finished and painted to accentuate the relief. Jonathan’s sculpture is now highly sought after, with editions selling out quickly to his worldwide collector base. He exhibits widely both in the UK and internationally, including New York, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Art, as well as filling Gigi with immense joy and calm, makes her pause, think, question and educate, there is a world full of endless possibilities out there that we have only scraped the surface of! Through the use of acrylics and mixed media she immerses herself in abstract surrealism and the contemporary world of stenciling, skins, texture, numbers, photographs and collage. Gigi has been extremely fortunate over the years leading a full and exciting life, through extensive travel and connecting with others, to experience the passion and intrigue that art offers. In her latest series…the Santos, a religious statue was placed on the alter in different parts of Europe for the congregation to pray to when the priest was unable to say mass. With the assistance of a Santos statue purchased in Nice many years ago Gigi photographs its face to create skins, using the androgynous figure as the main subject of some of the worlds ongoing issues such as Racism, Women’s Rights and Mental Health. Gigi would like to think that she is sending a message of integrity and goodness in the form of her paintings…but you can decide… let’s make a connection!

Edithâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work is rooted in the observation of the world around her. There is warmth and humour in her paintings and sculptures that reveals a joy in playing with paint and fabric, and a delight in the unusual; of existing in between the real and the imaginary.

Her textile sculptures have human like qualities that people connect with emotionally and respond to on a profound level. Her abstract paintings depict landscapes that are familiar - yet strange; they are journeys into a dream-like place created out of personal memories. Her paintings contain stitch-like marks and staccato tacks, scratched onto thick layers of paint. Similarly, the surfaces of Edithâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sculptures are built up like layers on canvas. Hand constructed from fabric, the sculptures are painted, dyed, slashed, layered and embroidered with a wide variety of hand and machine stitches that echo her mark making in paint.

Drawing is involved in all of Vincentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work. He likes to sketch outdoors, interpreting what he sees with lines and marks. He experiences and observes things much more this way than split second photographs. It helps him to observe and to remember. The sketches are often quite detailed, as he prefers to use this information, combined with memory, to produce his Indian ink drawings or watercolours and he plays with space. He has been drawing regularly from a very young age and is an active member of the Society of Graphic Fine Art, serving on the council, which is the only national drawing society in the UK. Landscapes, old buildings, machinery and old boats are largely from places such as Winchelsea, Rye, Dungeness and in his locality.

Dizzyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work challenges and explores the boundaries of paper. While studying for a degree in printmaking she began to experiment with different methods of paper making focusing on developing a process, based on the ancient technique of papyrus, layering and fusing finely sliced fruit and vegetables to create cohesive sheets which formed textural tactile paper. Each sheet, an arrangement of colour and tone, retaining the essence of its origins. The colour and patterns produced in the sheets are ideal material from which to initiate a variety of works in both two and three dimensional form, and small books, challenging the traditional concept of book art. Her work has been exhibited internationally and throughout the United Kingdom including the Royal Academy. A number of works are in private collections and museums.

Initially an abstract painter, Jane’s eye has consistently been drawn to line and form and both continue to be overtly expressed in her work. As a prior HR professional, Jane’s art practice alludes to human fragility, our need for connection – to each other, our environment, our history and our memories. In her current projects she expresses a sense of connection using both sculpture – typically using thread and glass - and through drawing and painting. Her ideas bounce between drawing and sculpture, feeding off each other. For Jane, lines are often suggestive of connection or disconnect. In her sculptures, the use of glass as a support speaks of both fragility and inner and outer worlds. Line and form become the primary point of view with a tangible connection to ‘something’. She deliberately removes time and place, allowing the viewer to interpret their own sense of connection to her work.

Experiences of people and places are at the heart of Jeremy’s work. Observations made while on journeys around Europe, India, Japan and most recently Mongolia inspire him. These are revealed in acrylic on canvas paintings and coloured drawings as well as large-scale installation works specially created for exhibitions. He makes films for gallery screening bringing together his art practice with his earlier career in film and television. He has focused on his own art practice for the last ten years exhibiting regularly in group and curated exhibitions and had a retrospective of his paintings, drawings and television and film work in 2017. His paintings and drawings have been selected for open exhibitions of the Royal Society of British Artists and the Society of Graphic Fine Art. In 2021 the Dimbola Museum and Galleries will show his Indian paintings, a new film and site-specific installation in an exhibition entitled ‘Creative CrossCurrents with India and Sri Lanka’.

Oil is Rowena’s favourite medium, but collage plays an integral part in her process and she feels as if she is painting with the paper. She has very much enjoyed keeping a journal of words and art during lockdown and this has led to several exciting paintings about these strange times. By using a range of firing temperatures to fuse the glass and inclusions a choice of finished surfaces can be achieved: crystalline, tactile or full-fused, depending on the design and where the glass will be displayed. Decorations include glassfusible screen-printing, glass painting with enamels, micas, metals and frits. Texture and form within the design requires mould-making, casting and slumping techniques. For the past two years she has worked with the Worshipful Company of Glaziers in London and exhibited work at Ely Cathedral. Her work is currently on the Warm Glass website in the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Aspiring Glass Artistsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; section of the 2019 Glass Prize category.

Her new ‘Transient Light’ series of digital monoprints was produced during lockdown to reflect the unreal, dream-like state many of us have felt at some stage during this uncertain period. Part narrative, part reimagined, each artwork features local landscapes, old farm buildings and disused warehouses photographed on daily walks. Fragments of these images were then layered and blended in Photoshop using a variety of tools and techniques to document her personal journey. Vivien’s work has been exhibited in group exhibitions and galleries in the southeast where she lives and works.

Nick uses his on site broad brush gouache sketches, as well as memories of woodland visits, for his finished semi-abstract acrylic paintings. He is mostly inspired by trees and their beauty, with the tranquillity that they uncompromisingly offer, as well as being natureâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s givers of life. This approach brings him into direct contact with the natural surroundings and makes him feel at peace, with the experience helping him to bring that feeling into his art work that is produced back in his studio, making it atmospheric. Nick likes to experiment with light, tone and texture. To achieve this, he will either paint light over dark or leave parts of the canvas untouched. He believes this working method helps to create powerful images.

Joâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s intention is to distil the essence of nature and its magic into her paintings, which are created using mixed media on board. She builds up layers using a range of different materials to create a three dimensional effect. This layering process lends itself to the scenery that she paints, creating depth and texture which brings nature to life in each beautiful scene. Jo likes to play with colour and this can dictate the composition of a painting. She spends all the time she can walking in the Sussex countryside and always has her camera to hand which allows her to capture a tableau as and when it happens. French artist Sonia generates innovative works of art at the intersection between art and science. With an initial career as a psychologist, she depicts her insights into the psyche onto canvas. Caroline’s photography is a response to the beauty and infinite variation of objects found in nature, along with a concern for the natural environment. Cheryl is a narrative artist and her subject matter is nature. She has been a storyteller her whole life. When she was five and there was a lull at school her teacher used to ask her to tell the class a story and this is key to her art. Cheryl creates work through exploration in printmaking, painting, sculpting and writing. She prints on organic materials and works with paper, ink and stitchery to create 3D narratives. She illustrates her short stories in limited edition artistâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s books. Sophie is a fine artist, teacher and photographer. Throughout her career the work themes flow with what is happening in her life. Her current project is titled “Look Up”. This project explores her life as a mother and the limitations this places on her working practice. She sees these limitations as a positive challenge. The challenges being a lack of studio time, carrying a baby not a camera, and concerns about children’s mental health and lack of connection to the environment. She is also interested in new technology in creating art. The images are all taken on walks with her family using an Iphone, and edited using apps. Sophie says “I wanted to think about the idea that whatever you do there is an app for that.” The images use colour and cropping to disorientate the viewer into questioning what is real and what is false.

Victoria took her sculpture degree at City and Guilds of London Art School in the late 1980s where the emphasis was on a classical training in life drawing and sculpture. Having completed several portraits, she was commissioned to produce a life size bronze statue of Rudyard Kipling for Burwash High Street in 2019. Her more abstracted work captures the essence/ soul of a person and although her figures are often static, their stillness has a presence.

Felicity uses photography and sketches as a starting point for her paintings, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;designingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; the picture from a number of different images. Back in her studio, she works with a series of repeat camera images improving the composition, cropping and splicing the reference pictures and adjusting the colours using Photoshop. Then she begins her painting, building up layers of watercolour paint, starting with washes and finishing with a dry brush or natural sponge to create more random marks or working in mixed media combining pencil drawing with watercolour. She is a full member of the SGFA, a London Drawing Society and an Associate of the Wilderness Art Collective.

Steve is a contemporary landscape painter based in the Cathedral City of St Albans and graduated in Fine Art from the Manchester Metropolitan University. The work relates to the writers and artists of the Romantic period and demonstrates a profound and spiritual preoccupation with the natural environment. The work is rooted firmly in the solitary contemplation of the sublime beauty of the landscape and can be considered as a meditation on the isolation felt by many of us on life’s journey. There is a connection, born out of an Irish heritage, with the Celtic tradition of ‘Thin Places’ or ‘Thin Spaces’ and the belief that such places are sacred. This belief suggests that heaven and earth are only three feet apart but in the thin places this distance becomes even smaller. The invitation to the viewer is to enter the spirit of the painting as it moves you emotionally.

David has a varied and eclectic background but throughout his life and career has sought a central aesthetic that continually surfaces through his artwork. His artistic endeavors began at a young age as a creator of short films and continued into college at RIT where he graduated with a degree in Photography as a Fine Art. This early work is a distant echo of his current photography which uses paper, light and color to create ethereal sculptural objects. Tracie uses lyrical drawing to express intimate emotions pulled from her unconscious. Universal symbolism in her work speaks directly to our psyche giving us the sense our deepest emotions have been cherished and transcribed. Peisley works across media, in series to express her poetic narratives. Her â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Personal Mythologiesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; series of gold lustre edged porcelain plates combine her love of Greek myth with personal experience. She likens the process of drawing into a circular piece of porcelain to entering a portal from the soul, a Mandala. They attempt to seize a moment, lock it in clay. The art of storytelling holds a nostalgic resonance, the imagery she studied in Greece of Etruscan vessels decorated with passionate themes, offer us a piercing charm. The stylized drawing further preserves ancient motifs. The mysterious and ambiguous themes in her dioramas are elegantly described using Mazarin blue under glaze, reserved historically for English porcelain.

Victor (1948) has been developing his own art concept of Ontologic Painting for the last thirty years. Inspired by fundamental questions of ontology, Victor transfers possible answers onto his paintings. His ideas are embedded in simple geometrical forms painted with sand, earth, clay, and shell limestone. Victor uses oil paint primarily due to its physical properties of viscosity, fluidity and texture. He usually applies primary colors in vivid and contrast spots.

The materials Ali uses are mainly textiles based; she particularly loves using nuno felt. The name is derived from the Japanese word ‘nuno’ meaning cloth. This technique bonds loose wool fibres into an open fabric such as silk gauze, creating a lightweight felt. Ali loves experimenting with painting, felting, weaving, natural dyes and deconstructed textiles. Whether it’s macro or micro vision, nature in all it’s forms and seasons speak to her through her own experience of them. She creates therapeutic tactile places or surfaces, inspired by the elements and her spiritual connection to a power place on the earth. She gains clarity and nourishment from what some people call ‘The invisible realms’ and she enjoys watching these worlds of the unconscious and conscious arrive in her artwork. Carole is a mixed media painter with a loose and flowing style, inspired by nature and her rural surroundings. She uses the transparency of water media to layer her paintings, enjoying colour and creating textures with mark making and resist techniques. Her mixed media works often derive from a curiosity about materials, which she combines by experimentation and pure play! This allowance for serendipity extends into the digital world, where Carole scans and layers her paintings to provide a ‘start’ for entirely new digital mixed media pieces. These reimagined abstractions are unexpected and surprising, frequently inspiring new works in a circular fashion. She imagined a visit to Folkestone by Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera and has the photographs to prove it. Mermaids have been captured on film, seen in unlikely places, and more malicious ones have upset boats in the Channel. Annie recorded her attempt to return some exotic plants from their unsuitable seaside balcony environment, to their countries of origin, without leaving her studio. A philosophy course introduced her to the Ancient Greeks, more mayhem. A current series involves tiny, fading images of her parents excursions with their 1930â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s North London Cycle Club. Although adventurous in their pursuits, they were severely restricted by time and money. Annie has widened their horizons to where they might have gone, still modest, but beyond Essex.

Brenda was based in London for many years and is a member of the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers. She showed regularly at the Bankside Gallery. In the 1980s she re-built a village house and studio in Andalusia, producing works inspired by sun and shadow in Spain. She moved to Sussex in 2004 where she paints and prints in her ancient Oast House. Her speciality is collagraph and etching, and more recently embossed paintings. Brenda published a book Collagraph and Mixed-media Printmaking in 2005, and later a DVD Collagraph, a Sculptural Approach to Printmaking, soon to be published as a series of short films on YouTube. In her early years, Brenda produced detailed figurative etchings of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Londoners Londonâ&#x20AC;?: gritty architecture, trains and life in inner London. Today her inspiration is more abstract: natural growth mineral forms and erosion and she uses gold & silver leaf in her unique richly textured, glowing works.

And in my paintings, I try to capture the vibrancy of the urban landscape and at the same time the narratives of the individuals moving within them.’ Frances also loves to paint portraits and recently won Sky Arts ‘Portrait of the Week’ 2020 for her portrait of Bernardine Evaristo, Booker Prize winner 2019. Not only is capturing a likeness critical but the story is just as important for her. She regularly exhibits in London including The Mall Galleries, Olympia and The Affordable Art Fair. She was ‘Artist and Illustrators’ magazine shortlisted Artists of the Year 2019.

Susan is an experienced textile artist and teacher who makes work with a focus on details and rhythms in nature using natural materials and plant dyes for colour. The images featured include delicate stitched repairs and surface pattern detail from a series of Sussex landscape images. Susan took part in a natural dye group who exhibited at Ditchling Museum of Art & Craft in May 2019. She will be running outdoor workshops at Sussex Prairie Gardens during summer 2020 in ‘Batik Painting with Natural Dyes’ and ‘Stitching with Natural Surfaces and Objects’. Jazz the glass Alchemist gained her BA (hons) Designer Maker from the University of Brighton. She works with all aspects of kiln formed glass from fusing to casting. Like diamonds, colour and clarity come together with a little alchemy to produce beautiful works of art. Her creations are inspired by the very nature of glass and the interaction of light and colour with references to the outstanding scenery and wildlife of the Sussex countryside where she lives. Jazz produces unique handformed pieces of her own design as well as creating custom commissions. Her work ranges from traditional landscapes formed in glass to brightly coloured abstract work. Jazz is also an established glass tutor teaching at several venues across Sussex and has exhibited widely within the area.

Richard works in a light filled studio in Sussex, an acorn’s throw from the Ashdown Forest. He strives to create presence in painting, opening a soul space allowing the viewer to breath with the artwork. For him, an artwork must have countenance – a spiritual presence – so that the piece continues to live on in the mind of the viewer. Aiming for mystery in this world of the known, Richard creates standing before the unknown. Richard’s practice demands a certain distance, to achieve this he utilises bespoke tools, brushes and squeegees. He loves with a passion the ethereal nature of colour and the physical qualities of paint, exploring textures, transparency and glazing to create diverse, vibrant surfaces. Working to remould inner spaces, he invites attention to and engagement with surface and image, outer colour journey and inner soul-space; saying “I invite you to open the painting as you would a doorway”.

Recently, her inspiration has come from the natural world, its folklore and environmental issues, but she likes to work on whatever interests her: social history, historic events, personalities, relationships, life events, or even something just quirky and fun. Whether realistic or abstracted, moody or uplifting, her pieces often contain elements of storytelling and sometimes fantasy, which aim to create a narrative with the viewer. Gillian works in both 2D and 3D in a variety of different disciplines painting, collage and free-motion machine embroidery. Painting and/or collage not only inform her textiles, providing a rich base, but these different elements often appear in partnership within the finished pieces. In addition, she uses whatever materials and techniques help her to convey a thought, develop a feeling, create atmosphere or conjure a story.

JOAN ROCHE RRASA

After obtaining her post graduate degree in Fine Art from the Royal Academy Schools Piccadilly, artist Joan Roche was a senior lecturer in Fine Art for many years in London. She maintains a strong connection with the RA Schools’ alumni. This relationship with the Academy is sustained through attending weekly drawing sessions in the famed semi circular studio, an engagment deeply influencing her development.

Two subjects have engaged her over many years, the landscape and the figure. Working within the tradition of landscape painting, Joan works in a studio on the sea front in Marine Court, Hastings. The view from this ‘ocean liner’ charts the continuous flux of the sea’s surface; a vast plane of energy. The atmospherics compliment a longstanding fascination with hydro-optics and natural light. Predominantly working in oil based media experimenting with brush, and pigment techniques she draws directly from the environment that the town of St Leonard’s on Sea overlooks. Joan has exhibited widely both here and abroad; notably in the Centro Modigliana Florence, New Delhi, Australia and Grenada.

Holly’s textile artefacts communicate a contemporary multimedia adaptation of the ancient Shamanic ‘Despacho’ ceremony. This ritual exhibits a profound sense of gratitude for Mother Nature and the Universe, and encourages us to momentarily return to the essential unity with all that exists. Demonstrated through intricate hand embroidery techniques, needle felting, shibori, and beading, Holly’s artworks convey a real sense of consciousness and character. She intends for her artworks to articulate a notion of transcendence, provoking one’s curiosity and imagination. These biomimetic pieces portray a narrative which encourages human kind to deepen their affinity with the earth. In honour of the ‘Despacho’ philosophy, these textile pieces are created with only natural materials, thus rendering them entirely compostable so that they too, alongside admiration and good intentions, may be returned to Mother Earth.

SHELLEY ROSE

Reworking one of the great themes, Shelley creates compositions combining the style of the old masters with new interpretation using modern technology. The viewer is faced with familiar objects, yet his compositions hold visual surprises.

Shelley began his artistic career as a printmaker for the distinguished artist Michael Rothenstein RA in the early 70’s, and went on to teach at Goldsmith and Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design in London. His work has been shown in London including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions and he participates in art fairs in London and the South-East. He has won the John Purcell Paper Award for Outstanding Printmaking and the Aberystwyth Purchase Prize.

HILDEGARD PAX

The inspiration for Hildegard’s work stems from the observation of light in nature. Glass is central to her work with it’s qualities of reflection, refraction, opacity and translucency. In the assemblages of glass she strives to ‘Make the Invisible Visible’ and create unexpected temporal beauty. Reflected and transmitted colours meet and intermingle, creating an ethereal colour field space within the artwork. Hildegard “paints with light” using colour, lines and shapes to create intriguing and mesmerizing fields of projected colour.

BUCKWHEAT AND MUSHROOM RISOTTO (serves 2)

150g buckwheat – rinsed 1 small white onion – finely chopped 2 garlic cloves – finely chopped Fresh thyme 250ml vegetable stock

(homemade or organic gluten free stock cube – Kallo)

1/2 a 400ml can coconut milk Juice of half a lemon 200g mushrooms – sliced

(you can use any mushrooms you like) Coconut oil for frying Salt and pepper Heat a knob of coconut oil in a large pan with a lid, on a medium heat. Add the onion to the pan. Allow the onion to soften then remove the leaves from 5-6 sprigs of thyme and add to the pan. Add the buckwheat and season with salt and pepper. Mix well and allow the ingredients to sauté for 2-3 minutes. Pour in the vegetable stock and two of the garlic cloves and allow to simmer with the lid on for 5-8 minutes. Buckwheat cooks really fast! Meanwhile, in a separate frying pan, heat a knob of coconut oil on a medium/high heat. Add the mushrooms to the pan with the third garlic clove. Place in a few sprigs of thyme and fry all together until the mushrooms are soft and golden. Add the lemon juice and coconut milk to the buckwheat risotto, stirring on a medium/high heat. Continue stirring for 5 minutes until the buckwheat is soft and the mixture is thick and creamy. Add salt and pepper to taste. Mix half the mushrooms in with the buckwheat risotto, then spoon the risotto into bowls and divide the remaining mushrooms on top. You can serve on its own or as a side dish. LEARN MORE HERE
