dedication

The staff affectionately dedicates the PIONEER posthumously to the memory of Mrs Elizabeth Crim who went home to be with the Lord March 16, 1959 May this memorial serve as a token of our appreciation for her guiding influence in the student affairs of LeTourneau Technical Institute and for her distinguished service as librarian of the college for twelve years Mrs Crim was born August 29, 1909, near Jacksonville, Texas, and attended Jacksonville Public Schools and Jacksonville Baptist College from which she graduated in 1930 She then entered Texas State College for Women While serving as librarian in the Jackson High School she continued her education through graduate studies at East Texas State College. From 1936 until 1946 Mrs Crim served as librarian of Lee Junior College in Baytown, Texas

In the autumn of 1946 Mrs. Crim assumed her duties as librarian of newlyorganized LeTourneau Technical Institute During her years at Tech she built one of the outstanding technical libraries in East Texas As a result of her knowledge of technical libraries she served on numerous panels and held a number of offices in the Texas Library Association

Many students will remember her for her thoughtfulness during the Christmas season when she served refreshments and had a pleasant smile for all who visited the library. On behalf of all who knew her at Tech we add our eternal gratitude to the pleasant memories of Mrs Elizabeth Crim

It's nice to know something about history, but most of it is a sad story. They say that history repeats itself, and everybody looked for a depression to follow World War II as it did World War I, but they got pleasantly fooled because we didn't forbid the use of machinery after World War II as our officials did after World War I which was the cause of the worst depression in a century

It's nice to know a lot about English, and I admit mine is poor; but when things aren't going right in the shop I find I can speak a language the boys understand

It's nice to be an artist and paint pretty pictures of a sunset or a mountain, but the imitation can't be any prettier than the real, and a colored camera can now make a real picture, although I will admit it's handy to be able to take a mechanical blue print and visualize enough to make a picture drawing of what a machine will look like

It's nice to study social science, but if we've studied our Bible as we should, we will have learned the best there is in social science

It's nice to study the economic system of our country, but after asking thousands of teachers how Uncle Sam puts the paper money into circulation, I've found only one man that gave me a sensible answer, and he said that Uncle Sam just pays his bills with it. And if any reader of this article knows a better answer, I'd like to have it.

You may not like mathematics, but you are not going to get very far designing a machine unless you know a lot about mathematics And remember this high standard of living that our grandfathers knew nothing about has been acquired by the use of machinery A man on a bulldozer did more in five minutes than six natives with machetes all day. As the inventor of that bulldozer and also of the first bulldozer made, I say it took mathematics to make that bulldozer, so let's study mathematics. It also took a lot of study on the resolution of forces, so let's study that too. Oh, yes, I had to study physics and metallurgical chemistry I wish I had taken more time to study chemistry Yes, we need business administration and bookkeeping, and girls especially should study shorthand Let's take on some industrial management, a little time study and mass production But the study that will yield the greatest results of all is the study of self-discipline We need to learn to apply our mind to a study and when we have really learned to study, we can learn almost anything we set our minds to

Of course, I'm assuming that we've had the 3 R's in grammar school, and before we left the eighth grade we should have known the Lord Jesus Christ as our own personal Saviour, and that His power in our life will give us selfdiscipline and the initiative and a desire to learn. In fact, I am convinced that with the help of God it can become a joy to study, and work becomes play, and our minds will be keen and alert if they are dedicated to God and not cluttered up with the foul things of the pleasures of sin which are but for a season

"mom's" message

Since the founding of LeTourneau Technical Institute it has been my fervent prayer that this will become the leading Christian technical college in America. That dream can becomeonly as real as each student and staff member purposes in his own heart to uphold the spiritual traditions of the entire LeTourneau Foundation.

Those of you who know Christ as your personal Savior have a great responsibility in helping to make Tech the kind of school that the Lord will continue to bless and use. Your testimonies can help to make this a place that you can proudly recommendto other technical students who want to attend a Christian college Let your lives here be like snowflakesthat leave marks but not stains I prayerfully covet your cooperation

As you study to show yourselves approved, may all of you plant your feet firmly on the Rock of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Yours in Christ,

As we look about and find evils so deep-rooted and backed by such mighty forces, we often feel we must leave them standing Let us remember there was a little group of Christians who matched themselves against the Roman Empire. They were laughed at, and many called them insane fanatics They had a hard struggle but made the tremendous venture and won because they felt a supporting Power behind their efforts

Too often we look at the size of a task and conclude it cannot be done. So, let us put our trust in the Spirit which can give us strength that is not ofthisworld, a strength no earthly force can withstand.

industrial engineering society

The Industrial Engineering Society is a national organization of which LeTourneau Tech is a junior chapter The purpose of the society is to create an interest among students now enrolled in two or more Industrial Engineering courses, to give them the desire to master these courses, and to give them an inside view of industry

Meetings are held every month, and the Program Arrangement Director contacts speakers that are directly associated with some field in industry In the course of time, these men are invited to take part in the meetings

Each year two scheduled field trips enable the students to examine many different phases of industry Also, during each semester a dinner meeting is attended by the one hundred members

The Tech Yellow Jacket, a newspaper by and for the students of LeTourneau Tech, has seen another very successful year under the direction of its editor, Earl James

The Jacket plays an important role in the coordination of campus activities and special events As the voice of Tech, it is designed to have student views read and recognized

One thousand copies are distributed throughout the campus and mailed to alumni throughout the world

Collating news for bi-monthly publication keeps Editor Earl James and Assistant Editor Deighton Hunt on their toes

Organized in 1957, the LeTech Flying Club has grown and grown and grown The thirty active members have logged many hours in the air and have completed a recognized course in aviation ground training

The boys are now flying a L-2 Taylorcraft and will soon advance to the larger Luscombe and Cessna 170

All agree that the serenity of flight cannot be equaled

Club officers: Harvey Price, president; Wallis Bluhm, vice president; Alvin Onstad, secretary; Sandy Koonz, treasurer; Fred Pfau, reporter

radio club

In September of 1956, the students of LeTech organized a radio club and obtained their F.C.C (Federal Communications Commission) license April 25th of 1957 was a big day for the Radio Club for this was the day they made their 100th contact These contacts are made with ham operators in the United States and many foreign countries

Several of their other activities include radio instruction for the Boy Scouts of Longview and aiding the Red Cross during times of emergency

These varied activities are not only a credit to the school but also to the community of which we are a part

The members spend much time having "ham sessions" with distant contacts
