MATHEMATICS

real problem solving + superior specialization = major career potential If you are the student who always aced your math classes and easily identify the ways mathematics plays a key role in everyday life, the mathematics major at LETU may be a winner for you. Mathematicians work in a variety of fields, and the flexibility of our program only adds to this versatility. Despite the fact mathematics is one of the oldest and most fundamental sciences, LETU professors make it more than relevant. You will graduate prepared to enter the workforce, become a teacher or continue your studies at grad school.

OUR DEGREES

• Mathematics, B.S.

• Mathematics Minor

Our mathematics program focuses on flexibility. Design your degree to help you pursue your goals. At LETU, you will work one-on-one with an advisor who helps you select classes from both mathematics and another area that will best benefit you. If you want to apply mathematics in business, we’ll point you to economics and other business courses. If math applied to engineering is what you’re interested in, go for classes in one of our highly recognized engineering programs.

WHY LETOURNEAU UNIVERSITY?

• Our small classes mean you have one-on-one interaction with your professors. • Our well-rounded curriculum allows you to work with math, engineering, biology, business and chemistry professors to model real-world problems. • You will have the opportunity to participate in competitions with the LETU Math Club and present undergraduate research at conferences across Texas. • Our faculty members have years of experience, integrate technology and calculus and understand the connections between Christianity and mathematics. • Our team assignments mirror the professional world. Mathematicians frequently work as part of interdisciplinary teams that may include economists, engineers, computer scientists, physicists and others.

WHAT DO MATHEMATICIANS DO? Mathematicians are a part of just about every business and industry you could imagine. They model natural and economic systems, analyze financial investments, investigate business risks, develop security strategies for national and industrial secrets, find better ways to organize and conduct computer operations, apply statistical methods to solve problems, teach and conduct research.

WHERE WILL I GET A JOB? Due to the flexibility of our program, LETU graduates are prepared to work in a wide array of fields, from cryptography to operations research. A few of the places our graduates put their analytical skills to use include:

• Insurance firms • Financial firms • Pharmaceutical companies • Engineering firms • School systems (K-12) • Graduate programs at research universities • Government agencies: National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), NASA, U.S. Department of Defense

“The education I received from LETU gave me an insight into the beauty I regularly see in my studies of analysis and algebra. I still use the notes from my classes at LETU to remind myself of a topic, or for a problem to give to my own students.” – William Grilliette, ’02, doctoral student, University of Kansas

CAREERS Math majors’ post-grad potential earns some serious respect. A 2009 study shows that the top three ‘best jobs’ in terms of factors including income, environment, employment outlook and stress (mathematician, actuary and statistician) are careers suited for math majors. Not to mention, CNN Money research reveals the top 15 highestearning college degrees have a common element: math skills.
