A Message From The President
E
very year is special, but this is the final year that I will serve as president of LeTourneau University. Typically, this President’s Annual Report issue of the NOW magazine reflects the happenings and blessings of the year just past. We do that here, but also celebrate highlights of our 60-year history as a reminder that God has had a powerful hand upon this place. Twenty years ago, in the fall of 1986, I stood before the university faculty and staff in Speer Chapel for the first time. I was nervous inside and maybe outwardly, as I delivered my very first State of the University Address. I recently reread that speech and want to share some of those thoughts as we think about the university and the future. I stated then: “We are a college of commitments.” • We are committed to excellence. I see a lot of people working hard to provide the best with less.

Today, we have a lot more but we still must work hard, for we will never have enough to meet all of our needs, and we must not relinquish our commitment to excellence.

• We are a college committed to excellence without exclusivity. We don’t need to rely on snob appeal or serve only the most capable students to evidence that we turn out a good product. Today, our students are even stronger than 20 years ago. However, we are still open to those students who have academic potential and will try to be all that God would want them to be. •
We are committed to integration. • integration of faith and learning • integration of a broad Christian worldview • integration of knowledge and experience…knowing and doing • integration of the academic, the spiritual, the social and the physical
Today, through our Center for the Development of Christian Leadership, we incorporate into our entire curriculum our five leadership distinctives: Discovering Purpose, Broadening Knowledge, Deepening Skills, Grounding Values and Collaborating Service. •
We are committed to openness and creativity. Our programs are unique, and we dare to be different.
Today, while we retain our flagship programs in engineering and aeronautical science, we have added more than 30 new majors that include biomedical engineering, international business, several new programs in education and even a new program in digital writing. While preserving the best of our traditions, we must also provide creative new programs to serve the needs of students of today and tomorrow. Our values of yesterday are still true today, but we are a young institution. We have yet to hit our full stride. We are a university with a great future. I’m as excited today about our future as I was 20 years ago. With God’s help, I’m confident that LeTourneau University’s best years are still ahead. Next year a new president will deliver the State of the University address. I ask you to pray with me for the search committee that will lead in the process of selecting that new leader. We will walk our way through this year of presidential transition with confidence and faith that leaves no doubt about Who holds our future, the God Who is the same yesterday, today and forever. Join with us as we celebrate our first 60 years and look forward to the great years that are ahead.

T
he history of LeTourneau University is an example of the faithfulness of God, for without Him, it would not exist. Sixty years ago, R. G. LeTourneau and his wife, Evelyn, founded the technical school that is now LeTourneau University. Since then, God has showered His favor upon this university and enabled it to grow. Allen Tyler, Harry Hardwick, Richard LeTourneau and Alvin Austin have all been instrumental in shaping the university’s history. Each of these university presidents was committed to seek God’s leading, to follow God’s commandments and to hear God’s voice. Throughout the years, numerous men and women have served as university trustees, faculty and staff. They come from LETOURNEAU UNIVERSITY FALL 2006
many backgrounds and share a dynamic faith in God. LeTourneau University is an unapologetically Christian university. While it has no direct denominational ties, it welcomes students of all denominations who love and seek after God. It is a place where students have found a deeper relationship with Him, grown in their spiritual walk and discovered God’s purpose for their lives. The university’s founder used to say, “I am just a mechanic whom God has blessed.” Today we can say LeTourneau University is a school which God has blessed. In the following pages, we take a look back at some of the people and events that have shaped LeTourneau University over the past 60 years as we celebrate God’s faithfulness.
Founder R. G. LeTourneau in 1955 was quoted as saying: “LeTourneau Tech was really born 20 years ago (in 1935) when one day I discovered a machinist didn’t know how to figure the circumference of a circle. I made up a little examination in about fourth grade arithmetic and found that very few of them could make a passing grade. We immediately began to give lessons to all who wanted to take them, because even though a man might be a capable workman, he would never be good timber for a foreman, superintendent or general manager unless he had a little mathematics in his head.”
LeTourneau Technical Institute is founded.

LeTourneau’s radio station KLTI goes on air with religious programs, music, education, news and sports for radio listeners in East Texas.
First campus Bible class begins with 12 and grows to 60. Class meets every Friday night. Following the study period, there is a time of social activity. The NOW magazine says, “This well-rounded program furnishes an ideal place for Tech boys to take their dates.”

More men pre-register for spring semester at LeTourneau Technical Institute than ever before. The Junior College division is approved by the Texas Education agency and is accredited by the Associate of Texas Colleges. R. G. LeTourneau confers degrees on 91 graduates at commencement exercises held in the LeTourneau Dome at the plant.
LeTourneau Tech offers a four-year course in lithography with a Bachelor of Science Degree in the printing trades. The Tech Male Choir is organized.

Spring semester offers a new course in aviation mechanics. LeTourneau Tech tightens admission and conduct standards for incoming students. Rules include regular attendance at chapel and classes, prohibiting possession or use of alcoholic beverages, operating automobiles on campus and prohibiting pets on campus. LeTourneau’s celebrate 40th wedding anniversary.

LeTourneau Technical Institute becomes LeTourneau College and accepts female students. Dr. Allen C. Tyler is named president by LeTourneau College Chairman of the Board R. G. LeTourneau.
LeTourneau Tech basketball team finishes their best season yet, averaging 65.4 points per game.
The Rev. Billy Graham is named to LeTourneau College Board of Trustees. A new sign for LeTourneau College is erected at front of campus.

The second annual Frontier Days activities are held in the Tech gymnasium. Men grow beards or pay $1 to be “certified shavers.” Students dedicate the renovated Army chapel to be used for permanent chapel services.

R.G. LeTourneau’s autobiography “Mover of Men and Mountains” is published. LeTourneau offers four-year programs in machine science, electrical science, welding engineering, Christian service, mechanical science, industrial engineering, building trades science and a twoyear program in linotype operation.

1962 Richard LeTourneau is elected president of LeTourneau College at the retirement of Dr. Allen C. Tyler, who was named president emeritus. A new 150bed residence hall is named in Tyler’s honor.
LeTourneau University receives accreditation from Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The college musical group, the LeTourneau Singers, cover 10,000 miles performing across the country telling people about the college. “Our philosophy at LeTourneau College is that the Lord needs representatives to witness for Him in all walks of life.” — Dr. Harry Hardwick LeTourneau College opens a new library, which is later named the Margaret Estes Library.

1965 The school’s science building opens, later to be refurbished as an education center.

The new dining hall opens, built to accommodate 500 students. LeTourneau College Silver anniversary emblem is unveiled. It features the three-circled concept of the philosophy of the college dramatized by the Bible, which represents the spiritual emphasis, a torch, which represents the intellectual, and a pair of strong hands, representing the practical.

R. G. LeTourneau dies at the age of 80. “Mom” LeTourneau is named National Mother of the Year.

Association of Texas Colleges and Universities announces LeTourneau College has earned full membership accreditation. A new LeTourneau College sign is unveiled at the front entrance, replacing generations of archways and welded-pipe signs.

The Downtowner Motor Inn is given to LeTourneau University. It is later used for temporary student housing. The FAA recertifies LeTourneau College as Aviation Maintenance Technician School in compliance with updated FAA requirements.

Texas Education Agency approves LeTourneau’s secondary teacher education program for full accreditation.
Richard LeTourneau returns to the presidency of LeTourneau College, as Dr. Harry T. Hardwick resigns. Hardwick is named the school’s first chancellor.

The Longview Citizens’ Resource Center addition to the library is dedicated. Missions Emphasis Week raises funds to send students on summer mission trips to nine foreign countries and throughout the United States. Mountain Mover machine, built by R. G. LeTourneau in 1922, is installed on the campus of LeTourneau College.

The Alpha Omega (AO) society house opens with beds for 24 students. The new Automotive Society Shop opens. A new aviation facility at the Gregg County Airport opens, with maintenance hangar, offices and classrooms.

LEAP program expands to Dallas. U.S. News and World Report lists LeTourneau University as one of the “Top Ten” regional liberal arts colleges in the Western United States in its fall 1990 edition of its America’s Best Colleges guide. Richard H. LeTourneau steps aside and becomes chancellor. Dick Berry, vice president and dean of college, becomes acting interim president.

Evelyn LeTourneau dies at her home in Longview at the age of 86.

Dr. Alvin O. “Bud” Austin assumes presidency of LeTourneau College, bringing fresh vision and perspective following a national search. Heath-Hardwick Hall opens, housing offices and classrooms for the liberal arts. LeTourneau College hosts its first annual invention contest with 29 entries.
LeTourneau receives full accreditation after a SACS visit and the engineering program renews ABET accreditation.

LeTourneau College becomes LeTourneau University with the unveiling of the new sign at the main entrance. Also, the R.G. LeTourneau Memorial Park is developed, including a circular plaza featuring three of the inventor’s earthmoving machines and a bronze statue of the founder. KZX (Kappa Zeta Chi) society house opens with 10 bedrooms. LeTourneau University begins its first working adult program, LEAP, which stands for LeTourneau Education for Adult Professionals.

Jeannette S. Belcher Memorial Tower, the Belcher Campus Mall and the Glaske Carillon and Bells are completed and dedicated. The Teacher education program receives initial three-year approval from Commission on Standards for the Teaching Profession. Longview Hall, a classroom and office building, opens.
LadyJacket basketball arrives on campus with the university’s first-ever team for the 1994-95 season. Five quadruplex apartment units open to house married students. Fall enrollment surpasses 2,000 students for first time ever, with official enrollment of 2,047 students. First MBA students graduate in Longview.

The Presidents Written by Janet Ragland

T
he institution we know today as LeTourneau University has been blessed throughout its 60-
year history by a series of God-honoring presidents who have helped guide the school through changing times. Anchored in fundamental Christian faith and geared toward technology, the school from its beginning was founded to meet real world needs to educate people for a better life and to fulfill the calling God had for them. That mission has not changed. In its early days as LeTourneau Technical Institute of Texas, the school primarily educated and retrained returning World War II veterans. As LeTourneau University, the school today meets the educational needs of high-achieving, traditional college-age students and high-reaching working adults who live in a fast-paced, technologically driven 21st century. While the students and the times have changed, God’s hand has been active throughout its history to build and bless this place we know as LeTourneau University. His hand remains to guide its future.

R. G. LeTourneau 1946-1961 The school’s heritage as a place built to honor God began with its founding. Robert Gilmour LeTourneau was an internationally known inventor and manufacturer of earth-moving equipment before he and his wife, Evelyn, founded the school in 1946. They were devout Christians who knew the value of giving back to God their time, talents and treasures. R.G. LeTourneau grew up in a working-class family. He went to work at the age of 14 as an iron molder and mechanic in a garage in Stockton, Calif. His eighth grade education was augmented years later by correspondence courses in engineering and geometry, but the founder of LeTourneau University actually never completed a college degree of his own, even though he was once awarded an honorary doctorate.
He learned the electric machinists’ trade in the Navy during World War I. An expert welder, he went into business repairing tractors after the war and discovered welded earth scrapers were more durable than riveted ones. He loved machines that enabled one man to do the work of many in half the time. By the early 1940s, he owned manufacturing plants across the country making heavy-grading equipment. During World War II, his company provided 70 percent of all heavy earth-moving equipment used by the U. S. Armed Forces to build runways, clear debris of bombed cities and build roads and bridges for supply vehicles to support Allied troops. After the war ended, the LeTourneaus moved to Longview, Texas, where they opened a new manufacturing plant and started the school that would become LeTourneau University. R.G. considered God to be his business partner, and was known for dedicating much of his profits to charitable uses. A member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, he routinely traveled more than 200,000 miles per year barnstorming as “a mechanic the Lord has blessed.” A man with ideas ahead of his time, he was one of the first businessmen to travel extensively by air, having
remodeled a war surplus Douglas A-26 bomber that took him from coast to coast beginning in 1947. While R.G. focused much of his attention to the manufacturing plant and his speaking engagements, Evelyn focused much of her time and energy to the Christian school for students who were mechanically inclined. LeTourneau Technical Institute offered an “alter-day” schedule that permitted students to alternate days of school and work throughout the school semester, with two students working one full-time job. Men could take classes Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and work Tuesdays and Thursdays, then alternate for the following week. Until the late 1950s, no classes were held on Saturdays. LeTourneau’s plants were closed on Sundays. This “earn-while-you-learn” program enabled many to attend school who otherwise could not afford an education. Based on a three-fold purpose to educate “the head, the hands and the heart,” the school encouraged its Tech students to compete in Bible memorization programs to win prizes, and many qualified to attend special Bible memorization summer camps.
Dr. Allen1961-1962 Charles Tyler During LeTourneau Technical Institute’s first 15 years, Dr. Allen Charles Tyler served as the dean overseeing the “alter-day” program and handling the day-to-day issues. When LeTourneau Tech became LeTourneau College in 1961, Tyler was named its first president. He had served as an administrator with the Spring Valley school system in Illinois for 26 years, over a decade as superintendent of a high school and vocational school. Tyler was initially employed by the LeTourneau family in 1944 as director of plant and supervisory training at LeTourneau’s Peoria, Ill., plant. Tyler moved to Texas in 1946 as an associate dean of LeTourneau Technical Institute. Tyler had a bachelor’s degree from Bradley Polytechnic in Peoria, Ill., and a master’s degree from the University of Illinois. He was awarded an honorary doctor of vocational education in 1951 from John Brown University. For LeTourneau Tech’s first 10 years, its founders were under obligation not to demolish

any buildings in case the government repossessed the facility in the event of another war. Once the 10 years passed, Tyler announced the school’s first 10-year plan to improve physical facilities. The plan included starting a School of Arts and Sciences in the fall of 1961 and opening the school to women. Later stages of the plan included adding a School of Business, a School of Education and a School of Engineering. During Tyler’s presidency, a $450,000 bond issue was sold to build the first permanent

Richard was experienced in business administration and management before entering school administration. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Texas A&M in industrial engineering and served as administrative vice president of LeTourneau College during Allen Tyler’s presidency. In 1970, Richard earned his doctorate in industrial engineering from Oklahoma State University.

structure, a 150-bed residence hall that was later named in his honor. Tyler took an active part in church and civic leadership, serving on the boards of the First Christian Church, the City Planning Commission, the Community Chest, Chamber of Commerce and First National Bank of Longview. He served as president of the Rotary Club in Longview and wrote several articles that appeared in education and trade journals.
During Richard’s first presidency, the college became financially independent from the LeTourneau company with a final $2 million gift that balanced the budget and contributed to the school’s eventual accreditation. Richard improved the spiritual climate on campus in the early 1960s with strict rules of conduct. In the mid-1960s, he dropped the alter-day system that had provided many the opportunity to work their way through school. One of his first goals was realized in April of 1964 when the Texas Association of Colleges and Universities accepted LeTourneau College as an affiliate member as a four-year college. To help academically challenged students, he initiated the Giant Step program to help students transition from high school to college during the summer before their first fall semester. The program was so successful, it remained for 26 years. Enrollments grew from 425 in 1961 to 732 in 1968, when Richard left office to serve as president of his father’s earthmoving equipment manufacturing company. College facility improvements during his first term included the Tyler Hall west wing (1962), the Margaret Estes Library (1963), the Science Building (1965), nine married student housing quadruplex buildings (1966), and a gymnasium (1967). When Richard returned to the presidency in 1975, the school was $8 million in debt and in need of a cash infusion and more residence hall facilities. Through tenacious fund raising and challenge grants, three new residence halls were built in 1982: Pennsylvania Hall, Evelyn LeTourneau Hall and Mabee Hall. Harry1968-1975 Hardwick
Harry Hardwick is fondly remembered for his love for people and his gift for listening and sharing. Hardwick’s presidency was marked by growth in enrollment, facilities, programs and, unfortunately, debt. One of the highest achievements was gaining accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1970. Known as a “true Christian gentle man,” Hardwick oversaw many changes on the campus. The Skipper Dining Hall (1970), the Longview Citizens’ Resource Center (1974) and the R. G. LeTourneau Memorial and Student Center (1975) were all constructed during Hardwick’s tenure. His many involvements in civic life in Longview helped bridge communication between the university and the community. He was active in the Christian and Missionary Alliance church. Hardwick previously had served as president of St. Paul Bible College in Minnesota and was a faculty and staff member at Nyack College, his undergraduate alma mater. He earned a master’s degree in speech from New York University where he later earned a doctorate in education in 1968. He served as pastor to several churches and contributed to the founding of Youth for Christ. LeTourneau University’s Heath-Hardwick Hall was named, in part, as a tribute to his many contributions to campus life. Hardwick became the school’s first chancellor on May 1, 1975.

LeTourneau has for 60 years sent its Christian students out into the world armed with godly knowledge to turn the world about. Integrity, wisdom and fortitude are in short supply today, LeTourneau has taught thousands to live their lives that way. Discovering purpose, broadening knowledge and deepening professional skills, these traits are taught at LeTourneau to strengthen its students’ wills. Students learn there’s a mighty God who leads a willing soul, they put on God’s armor as He shows them where to go.
Grounded in godly values, students show others that they care as they volunteer thousands of hours in communities everywhere. If one person can make a difference, how much more will thousands do? Alumni are spread throughout the world to help God’s will come true. God has blessed LeTourneau University as its successes can attest, it has sent godly leaders into the world, it has sent its very best. May other universities follow the path that LeTourneau has defined, education and excellence in all one does, following God’s Word divine.

Alvin O.1986-2007 ‘Bud’ Austin Alvin O. “Bud” Austin’s tenure spans more than a third of the university’s 60-year history. To the casual observer, his greatest impact on the school might seem to be the near-total renovation and beautification of campus facilities. However, this career administrator’s legacy is much more than bricks and mortar. When Austin made the decision to come to what was then LeTourneau College in 1986, the university was still using many of the old, white-washed World War II barracks, remnants of the days when the 156-acre campus in South Longview was the old Harmon Army Hospital. More than $75 million in new construction, technology infrastructure and equipment has transformed the physical campus into a first-rate university with quality facilities. A few of the construction projects build during Austin’s tenure includes the university mall and bell tower (1992), as well as educational facilities including Longview Hall (1992), Solheim Recre-

ation and Activity Center (1996), Glaske Center for Science, Engineering and Technology (2001), a remodeled Education Building (2002) and new Martin Donner Memorial Test Facility (2006). Residential additions include university apartments (1994), Thelma Gilbert Hall (1998), Durham House, Carpenter House, Howe House and McKinley House (2000), John and Florence Thomas Hall (2002) and Margaret Davis Hall (2005). However, the one that tops them all is the single largest building on campus, the $20 million S. E. Belcher Jr. Chapel and Performance Center, a 2,000-seat auditorium slated to open in spring 2007. Despite facility improvements, Austin’s leadership has propelled the school forward in other substantive ways. Moving to university status in 1989, Austin added the school’s first-ever graduate programs and established new educational programs in Dallas, Bedford, Tyler, Houston and Austin.

For 15 years, the university has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of America’s Best Colleges. Fundraising for the university has never been better. Austin’s tenure has seen remarkable growth and change. Enrollment has grown from 753 to nearly 4,000 students, while SAT scores have increased by about 160 points. Academic programs have expanded from 35 majors to over 60 and faculty quality is the highest in the institution’s history. Born in Florida, Austin grew up in the western United States. He earned his undergraduate degree from Westmont College in 1964, his master’s degree from California State University–Los Angeles in 1967 and his doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Mississippi in 1971. He served as vice president for institutional advancement at North Park College and Theological Seminary in Chicago, Ill. Before that, he held administrative posts at Seattle Pacific University and California State University–Northridge. His first administrative post was as one of the youngest university vice presidents in America when he was at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene in 1970. He was 28. Austin’s commitment to Christian leadership led to the founding of the Center for the Development of Christian Leadership which integrates five Christian leadership values (discovering purpose, broadening knowledge, grounding values, deepening skills and collaborating service) into all the university’s curricular and co-curricular programs. Austin was the school’s first president selected after a national search, and was not closely associated with the LeTourneau family. When he arrived, the university’s financial underpinnings were tentative. Deficit budgets raised potential for real financial distress. Accreditation and other external validations were marginal. Austin’s first year as president was the only year in the past two decades that the school’s budget was not balanced. Austin has also provided leadership to a host of professional, civic and church organizations in the past two decades. Promoting Christian higher education, Austin chaired the board of the Council for
Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU), served on the board of the Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas (ICUT), and was a member of the Council of Presidents of the American Southwest Conference. He served as a member, and as chairman on numerous accreditation teams, for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and as a commissioner for the Commission on Colleges, the association’s governing board. He previously served as one of 13 members of its Executive Council. Locally, he was president of the Longview Chamber of Commerce and served on Longview Economic Development Corporation and Longview United Way. He was on the original Strategic Planning Committee for the City of Longview. He also served on the board of the Good Shepherd Health System for 11 years and as its chair for two. He served on advisory boards for Regions Bank, the Eastman Chemical Company, and most recently served as co-chair of the Longview Vision 2010 Committee which encouraged branding the Longview area as a good location for retirees. He currently serves on several boards including the Educational Foundation of East Texas for Encouragement FM, which operates the Christian radio stations, KVNE and KGLY. In April of this year, Austin announced his intention to retire. He accepted a two-year, non-governance transitional role as chancellor to provide continuity and encouragement at the will of the university’s next president. As his retirement date of June 30, 2007 draws nearer, Austin says the university is in the strongest position in its history for a leadership transition to occur. While he does not yet discuss his future plans, owing to his commitment to “finish strong,” he does admit to one truth when he says, “I have confidence that the God who allowed me to come this far and has given me so many tremendous opportunities to do things I would never have dreamed about, is not going to set me aside if there is something else that I can do.” n

Gonzalez and undergraduate engineering students are working to develop (1) a detailed anatomical musculoskeletal computer model to quantify knee ligament strain and (2) a sophisticated robot-cadaver knee experiment that will be used to verify and evaluate the computer model in hopes that therapy can be developed that can make many future knee surgeries unnecessary. More than 400 freshman and transfer students from all across the country moved into residence halls with help from faculty and staff. ENROLLMENT CLIMBS FOR 10TH YEAR Enrollment for the fall 2006 semester at LeTourneau University almost hit the 4,000 mark again this year after 10 consecutive years of increasing enrollment. The official enrollment for the university for fall 2006 is 3,983, up one student from last year’s record enrollment of 3,982. The Longview campus is host to 1,732 students, with a record 284 online students who are served from the Longview campus, making the Longview impact 2,016, the highest ever. ACL-DEFICIENT KNEE GETS $200,000 RESEARCH FUNDING The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded $206,849 to LeTourneau University for Dr. Roger Gonzalez’ biomedical engineering research into the stability of knees lacking anterior cruciate ligaments (ACL). The grant is awarded under the NIH’s Academic Research Enhancement Award program, designed to involve undergraduate students in small-scale biomedical research projects. The research project focuses on knee stability associated with ligament failure and the prevalence

Karen Rispin, who teaches biology at LeTourneau University, accompanied the LEGS team to CURE International’s Bethany Crippled Children’s Center in Kijabe, Kenya, this summer. LEGS stands for LeTourneau Engineering Global Solutions, a student research and design project under the direction of biomedical engineering professor, Dr. Roger Gonzalez. The goal of LeTourneau University’s LEGS research is to deploy and test a low-cost, durable, above-knee prosthetic leg that improves the walking gait and quality of life for amputees in some of the world’s poorest countries.

A F R I C A Written By Karen Rispin Car accidents, land mines, snake bites, infections and burns often result in amputations in developing countries like Kenya because of inadequate medical treatment. In virtually all developing countries, above-knee amputees receive only peg legs that don’t bend, resulting in a stiff-legged, wide-swinging walking gait that is physically tiring. This summer I went to Kenya with the LEGS team, including team leader and mechanical engineering professor, Dr. Steve Ayers; mechanical engineering students Dave Hufft and David “Ditty” Dittenber, and pre-med student Shannon Toews. Shannon had traveled to Kenya last year with the LEGS team. This year’s LEGS team members focused on product development, completion and testing of their prosthetic leg design. Shannon and I focused on rehabilitation and subject adaptation. Our goal was enhancing patients’ use of their new limbs through proper fit and gait training using laminated flash cards. Patients walked along talc lines we drew on the ground as we recorded gait data with two video cameras. During the first week, patients fitted last year came in for re-evaluation and follow-up. Timothy Njuguna, 11, and Doris Wanjiru, 14, came in from “Joy Town,” a home for disabled children. Magdalene Chepkenyor, 14, and Faith Odongo, 7, were brought in by their mothers. Shannon and the patients from last year greeted each other with great excitement and delight. The children all had outgrown their sockets and needed to be refitted, but had good reports for us about the LEGS limb. Peter Mbuvi, 28, who lost his leg in a

hippo attack, reported that he walked for miles a day on his LEGS limb. Dr. Steve Ayers had developed a careful, methodical protocol for Shannon and I to follow to fill in gaps in the original information collected on patients last year. We also assessed how these patients were walking one year later. The LEGS knees held up very well, just needing a new rubber bumper and some tightening, making it clear LeTourneau students had designed a good knee. One goal of the trip was to find out which raw materials were available in Kenya to build the LEGS limb. By chance, I met Steve McMillan who maintains all the lab machines and generators at the Kijabe hospital. He knew what was available and how to find it in Nairobi. Steve spent hours explaining the situation and materials available (bolts, nuts, plastics etc). His wife, Melinda, is a physical therapist who works with amputees. She partnered with us to help train the clinicians how to teach patients to walk on our polycentric knee, that bends in a natural way, yet remains rigid when body weight locks it straight. Three patients, Catherine Wanja, 22, Emily Achieng, 22, and Winnie Moi, 26, were new this year. Our LEGS engineers worked with the head of the clinic’s orthotics shop and other staff members to fit, assemble, and align their new prosthetics. We had brought knees and feet with us only to discover a miscommunication about foot size, so the feet were too big. Our students carved them down as much as they could, but the women’s shoes still didn’t fit, so we bought them each a new pair at an open air market that sold running shoes. It had rained, so trying on damp shoes was difficult, but their pleasure in choosing new shoes made it really fun.
Emily later became ill because the high altitude in Kijabe exacerbated her sickle cell anemia. My heart ached for her. She wanted so much to keep up with the other girls as they learned to walk with their new legs. She was transferred to another hospital for pain relief and later told us she had rededicated her life to God while we were there. Walking well with a polycentric knee is a skill that takes time, instruction and deliberate practice. Most patients in developing nations have very little guided rehabilitation. The LEGS team is developing a program to encourage patients to practice in their homes. In addition, we are working with our overseas partners to develop a fitting and rehabilitation protocol specific to the LEGS limb. While the work was intense and busy, moments of the trip that were not work-related were special,
as well. One evening we walked up the hill to visit Rift Valley Academy, the boarding school I attended from grade 2 – 12 while my parents were missionaries in Kenya. Another evening, Shannon and the other students played LeTourneau’s “Alma Mater” on partly filled pop bottles. We ate supper one night with the prosthetics shop’s hospital staff at Moma Chiku’s, a tiny African restaurant. It was a night of good fellowship and good food – Kenyan greasy chapattis, soupu with cabbage and ginger ale. Leaving Kenya was a bit sad, but it was good to come back home. Since returning, we have applied for several federal grants, and we continue to seek funding through corporate and foundation sponsorships. All donations are appreciated, both by the students and faculty and by the amputees who can walk again. n

A Little Ingenuity Makes C
Written by Rachel Stallard More than 2,500 students will attend LeTourneau University this semester without ever stepping foot into the Memorial Student Center, or eating in the cafeteria, or watching a basketball game or playing intramural sports. And that’s OK, because these LETU students are working adult students in the university’s School of Graduate and Professional Studies. They attend classes in the evenings and on weekends in Tyler, Dallas, Bedford, Houston and Austin, and nearly 300 LETU students take classes online. Through the visionary leadership of LETU President Dr. Alvin O. Austin, many working adults complete their college educations as LETU students. In the late 1980s, Austin saw dynamic changes in East Texas. Workers once secure in their careers saw the need for more training. Some needed advanced degrees to be more marketable in a tougher, competitive economy, but returning to school full time was not feasible. Many of these working adults had family and work responsibilities. To raise student enrollment, Austin needed ingenuity to succeed. Realizing many people change careers several times in their lives, he initiated the working adult program in a format that allowed working adult to finish their degrees while keeping their jobs. “Initially we sought to reach an under-served population here in the immediate Longview area,” LETOURNEAU UNIVERSITY FALL 2006
Austin says. “We thought it would strengthen the university’s outreach, and if someday we had 200 people in it, we would be successful.” It didn’t take long to see the initiative could expand the reach of Christian higher education to other cities.
Community Acceptance The program was originally called LEAP, which stood for LeTourneau Education for Adult Professionals. In the beginning, the university teamed up with a Phoenix-based marketing company that helped colleges around the country start adult education programs. One of the original committee members of the LEAP program was Dr. Donald Connors, the assistant vice president of the School of Graduate And Professional Studies (GAPS), which is what the program is now called following a name change in 1995. “The community got very involved with more than 100 community members turning out for our first informational meeting,” Connors says. “Our coursework is accelerated, not abbreviated. It’s the same coursework students would get going to class everyday in a traditional setting, but the work is compacted. We also tell our students that what you learn here in class tonight, you can apply in your work tomorrow.” The first class met Oct. 30, 1989 with 13

College A Reality For Many students seeking their bachelor’s degrees in business. Classes met once or twice a week for six to eight weeks per course with the same students making a group, or cohort, which met together year round until they completed the program. When one course was completed, the next course began the following week with a new professor in the same classroom. Books were sent automatically to students a few weeks before each new course began. There was no need for students to re-register or re-enroll. Once a student was placed in a cohort, the next courses were scheduled automatically to keep them on track to complete their degrees. “We have succeeded because we found a way to take the education to the students rather than the students to the education,” Connors said. Today’s program works the same way, with one exception. When LETU’s program first began, incoming students had to have already completed at least 60 credit hours or an associate’s degree. Today, students with no previous college credits are now admitted into the program. The format has been a hit. Today, more than 1,170 cohort groups totaling 16,000 students throughout Texas and online have completed their degrees through the GAPS program. In the program’s 17-year history, it now accounts for 45 percent of the university’s living alumni. Many other universities also have adopted this format to reach working adults.
Bedford
Ingenuity Leads To Growth LETU has been able to maintain its roots as an unapologetically Christian university while integrating its working adult program into new communities. Longview and Tyler both opened learning centers for evening and weekend classes in 1989. Dallas and Bedford opened in 1990. Houston followed in 1993. The city of Austin was added in 2001. A second Houston site, in the Westchase District, opened in 2006. “Our students come from a 20- to 25-mile radius around our centers,” says Dr. Scott Ray, associate vice president for GAPS. “Our mission is still reaching out to the local community, wherever that community may be.” Online courses also add opportunities for student growth and personal tailoring of classes not limited by geography, as Ray cites students stationed in other countries, including Iraq, are pursuing degrees from LETU. “We’re always trying to find ways to meet the needs of potential students,” Ray says. Each center now offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business, as well as a Post-baccalaureate Accelerated Certification for Teachers program (PACT) that equips adults who already have a college degree to become certified teachers in the state of Texas. The Training Educators to Accept the Challenges (TEACH) program enables adult students to earn their bachelor’s degrees in

interdisciplinary studies and become teachers or teacher’s aides. “We are still unapologetically Christian, just like we always have been, and that’s not going to change,” Ray says. “All of our faculty members still have to be a mission fit for the university.” Each of the 400 adjunct faculty members employed by LETU’s centers go through the same interview process as the faculty and staff working at the Longview campus, including sharing their personal Christian testimonies. All classes begin with short devotions and prayer. Chaplains at each center help students with personal issues. Course content is taught from a Christian worldview, Ray says. “Accounting is accounting. There’s not Christian math or non-Christian math, but business can be taught in keeping with our mission of integrating faith and learning.” Dawn Rodak, director of the two Houston sites, says many working adult students are drawn to GAPS because they have found a place to be successful. “Many of our referrals come from word-ofmouth, from other students telling their friends how much they achieved through our program,” she says. As the largest city in Texas, Houston brings a diverse ethnic mix to LETU’s demographics. “We have a diverse ethnic population that makes classroom discussions interesting,” Rodak says. It also makes the 148 adjunct faculty and three full-time faculty members more aware of how to relate to a growing transitional population. The aftermath of last summer’s hurricanes has increased Houston’s population and educational needs to an unprecedented level. “Katrina changed a lot of lives around here, and Rita brought us many students from the Beaumont area,” Rodak says.

The Classroom As A Mission Field Rodak says the spirit of Christian love and encouragement permeates the centers and is evidenced on the wall at the Galleria-area office. “It began as a grass-roots student initiative, when one cohort finished the program and put a picture of its class with a Bible verse on a plaque and presented it back to the campus as an encouragement to others who follow,” Rodak says. “It was a personal and wonderful gift.” Now each graduating cohort has followed suit and the administration has determined size and content limitations for the plaques. However, it remains a tool of encouragement. “I tell students who are having trouble in their classes to go look at that wall. Go look for someone you might know who has been through this program. If they can do it, you can do it, too,’” she says. “I know of two students whose families lost everything to fire,” Rodak says. “Our students were faithful to help. Many anonymously dropped off diapers, clothes or grocery store gift cards for those in need. There is a camaraderie here that students wouldn’t get anywhere else,” she says. “Seven students since January have professed faith in Christ because of influences in the classroom,” Rodak says. “If we did nothing else, making sure our students’ eternal future is secure is more important than all the degrees we offer. Having a degree just makes our lives on Earth a little easier.” From business classes to teacher education, more students find themselves drawn to the success LeTourneau’s programs offer, reaffirming the university’s founding belief that faith and ingenuity are a powerful combination. n Rachel Stallard is a freelance writer who lives in Kilgore, Texas.

NEW COACHES Two new coaches have brought new energy to the athletics program at LeTourneau University this fall: baseball coach Robin Harriss and softball coach Brad Bowser. Harriss is a 1995 graduate of Texas Tech University where he earned all-Southwest Conference and SWC-tournament team honors during his senior season. Originally from San Angelo, Texas, Harriss attended Lubbock Christian University and Frank Phillips Junior College before earning a degree in exercise and sport science from Texas Tech. He earned a master’s degree in college teaching from Northeastern State University in 2003. Besides coaching, Harriss will also teach in the kinesiology department at LeTourneau. A former South Atlantic League all-star catcher, Harriss played or coached at the professional level with the Cleveland Indians for eight years. He coached at Bacone College and Oklahoma State University before going to Dartmouth College, where he was in charge of recruiting and hitting. At Dartmouth, Harriss helped take the Big Green from last place in the Ivy League in 2005 to second place in 2006. Over 40 of his college players were drafted into the major leagues.
Taking up the reins of LadyJacket softball is a familiar face on the LETU campus. Brad Bowser has served as associate dean for student life at LETU since 2000 and said he’s long wanted to get back into collegiate sports. Bowser is a 1988 graduate of Indiana’s Anderson University, where he played varsity baseball at the NAIA level. After earning his master’s degree in college student personnel at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind., he worked for nine years at Anderson University, serving as assistant men’s basketball coach in addition to his other student-life duties. Athletic Director Duane Trogdon said Bowser was already a great fit for the university and believes he can make LETU a contender in the American Southwest Conference. WHITE PURSUES A CAREER IN DIAMONDS Former LETU pitcher Demetri White, a 2005 mechanical engineering graduate from The Woodlands, Texas, has signed to play professional baseball with the Vermont Lake Monsters, a Single A affiliate of the Washington Nationals organization. One of the most dominant pitchers in LETU history, White was the top strike-out pitcher in the American Southwest Conference during his last three collegiate seasons. n

we were able to build relationships, make a good impression and represent our school in a positive light.” For LeTourneau education students Lynn Buckley and Melanie Wesson, the trip reassured them that they had chosen the right career path. Buckley said she was surprised by similarities between Alaskan and Texan children. “Kids are kids and no matter what culture and where they live,” Buckley said. “There are always going to be some common characteristics that link them together.” Wesson said she was inspired to work with special needs children. “After this trip, I feel that special education may be something for me to look into,” Wesson said. “In Alaska, there is a high percentage of (children with) fetal alcohol syndrome. We met one or two children who were on the autistic spectrum.” The other LeTourneau students who went on the trip included Michele Mercer, Jennifer McCool, Ryan Corcoran, Whitney Barnes and Jake Gebhardt. All of the students who traveled to Alaska spent about two months preparing lessons that would be age appropriate for kindergarten through 8th grade classrooms. “We were unsure as to how much each school would allow us to work with their students,” said Dr. Emberton. “But, what we found were very open opportunities to share our talents, skills and hearts with the students.” Rempel said another school district in an even more remote part of Alaska has asked for LeTourneau students to visit. The more remote locations are only accessible by airplane. “It will be more challenging doing it off the road system,” Rempel said, “but I think this first effort has laid the groundwork for more.” n
Alaska was a bit cooler than Texas, but the weather didn’t stop LETU education students from visiting several classrooms and a few scenic diversions along the way.

What an exciting year this will be for our alma mater! Having never had the opportunity to meet R.G. or Evelyn, I sometimes wonder if they ever dreamed that LeTourneau Technical Institute would grow to become a worldclass university that offers over 60 different majors to students from the world over. I can only imagine that they are pleased with our growth and that it has not come at the expense of our heritage. Even though the white barracks that once housed our students have been replaced with comfortable and well-appointed residence halls, and hundreds of trees dot the campus, the foundation of faith and learning that our founders were so committed to is still firmly in place. Change is inevitable, but the things that make LeTourneau unique have not changed. We are very intentional about incorporating our faith into everything we do and it permeates our campus. We are facing a significant change this year as we select a new president to lead our university in the years to come. After 21 years of service, Dr. Austin will step down and a new leader will be installed to guide LeTourneau University into the future. I would like to challenge you to pray daily for God to give our search committee wisdom as they seek out and select this new leader. We even have small bookmarks that can guide you in your prayers. Class Notes MEMORIALS Briggs Haugh (’04 ASFL) died July 26, 2006 in a Louisiana plane crash. Briggs is survived by his wife Joy (Cofer) Haugh (’06 ASDT). BIRTHS Art (’78 ME) and Miriam Kruppenbacher have another daughter, Anna Elizabeth, born April 21, 2006. She joins sister, Leah, 6. The Kruppenbacher family lives in New York where Art is the NYSEG and RG&E director of electric distribution engineering. Robert “Bob” Brandt (’78 ET) and his wife Rosalania announce the birth of Sarah, born 7/25/06. Bob has two sons from a previous marriage, Daniel and Felipe. Bob and Rosalania live in Paraiba, Brazil, where Robert is a Professor at Campina Grande State University. Ben (’84 BUAT) and Gigi Benedick welcomed their third child, Sarah Sue Elisabeth, born May 22, 2006. She joins siblings, Abigail and Joel. The Benedicks work for Wycliffe in Papua New Guinea. Rob (’91 ATBS) and Kristi Dillingham have a son. Jeremiah Scott was born Oct. 22, 2005. He joins his big sister, Leah. The Dillingham family lives in Alaska where Rob is a pilot for Arctic Barnabas Ministries.
Nathan (’96 MT) and Valerie White have a new baby. Jonathan Jay was born 9/18/06. The Whites live in Kenai, Alaska. Ben (’97 ATFL) and Becky (Steiner) (’98 ATFL) Gambrell announce the birth of Lucas Josue Daniel on 9/12/06. The Gambrell family lives in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, where Ben is a pilot for South America Mission. Ben (’98 ATET) and Rebecca (Jennings) (’98 PSYS) Wigton announce the birth of their son, Ezra Miles, on June 27, 2006. Scott (’99 CST) and Andrea Salzman welcomed Luke Elliot, born Nov. 18, 2005. They live in Buchanan, Mich. where Scott works for Life Action Ministries. Dennis (’99 ME) and Kimberly (’98 ME) (Daharsh) Tweten announce the birth of Annelise Rose, born Aug. 12, 2005. Annelise joins Lillian, 5, and Evelyn Bella, 2. Living in San Antonio, Texas, Dennis works for Southwest Research Institute and Kim is a stay-at-home mom. Katrina (Isaack) (’99 PSYS) and Bret Orton announce the birth of their daughter, Kyria Irene, born March 2, 2006. They live in southern Colorado, where Katrina has an acupuncture practice and Bret teaches high school math and science.

MARRIAGES Greg (’85 CS/ET) and Jenny Schultz married April 12, 2004 and now live in Denver, N. C., Greg works as a Manager for CommScope, Inc. Esther Dunn (’99 BYBS) married David Serrano this year. She also completed her doctorate in Plant Medicine from the University of Florida. The Serrano family, including David’s daughter Isabella, 5, live in Miami, Fla. Esther is a plant pathologist for the USDA and David is an entomologist. Bekah Cadman (’00 BYBS) married Lt. Stephen D. Fisher on 6/20/05. Steve is an ordained minister in the PCA and a US Navy Chaplain on active duty. Bekah completed her Master’s degree as a Physician Assistant shortly before they wed and

This fall he will oversee the Helicopter Maintenance Specialty program at SIU.
Jennie Parks (’06) married Zach Humphreys May 13, 2006 in Fort Worth, Texas. They live in Nacogdoches, Texas, where Jennie teaches. 1960’s David Irving (’68 MT) and son, Jeff Irving (’00 MET) traveled to Slidell, La. with Gallup Baptist Church in New Mexico to rebuild homes destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. The Faith Baptist Church in Slidell hosted them. Don Thompson (’69 ME) wants his KZX brothers to know he has resurfaced after working as a project engineer on power plants in India, China and the Philippines. He is now in Uganda under contract to the U.S. Department of State, Overseas Building Operations for the USAID annex to the embassy there. Brad, Lori and their three children, serve as missionaries in the Leipzig area. 1980’s Dan (’81 MT) and Karen (’81 BI) Dudeck returned to campus in May, 25 years after their own gradu-
ation, to see their son, Josh Dudeck (’06 ME) graduate. Daughter, Jessi, attended LeTourneau for one year. The Dudeck’s live in Savannah, Mo. Mark Lee (’82 BU) received his Doctor of Ministry degree from Iliff School of Theology in Denver, Colo., in June. This fall he will present a paper based on his dissertation to the American Academy of Homiletics. The Lees live near Fort Collins, Colo. where they raise Boer goats in addition to their parish work. Scott (’82 EE) and Carol Oakes celebrated their 18th wedding anniversary recently. They live in Annandale, Va., with their three children, Jennifer, 15, Jonathan, 13, and Stephen, 11. Scott recently accepted the position of vice president of Systems Development for Trident Systems in Fairfax, Va. Russell (’85 CSE) and Rhonda Davis live in Greenville, Texas, where Russell works for L-3 Communications. They have 10 children, including twins, Melinda and Melissa born Jan. 15, 2005.

Marlan works for Nikon Precision, Inc. Remember this family in your prayers. In May 2006, they lost their daughter, Christa Lee Sauerman, in a motorcycle accident. Andrea Peterson (’92 BBM) is now the development services manager for WorldServe Ministries. She lives in Plano, Texas, with her husband, Steve, and children, Megan, 17 and Lexi, 14. Scott Channon (’93 BBM) will be the Aviation Resources Department flight instructor at MAF. Scott and family are moving from MAF in Venezuela.

Steve Land (’03 ASAE) works with Compass Aviation Ministries in North Carolina as a flight instructor. Steve, his wife Andrea and daughter Kirsten are preparing to live and work in Kyrgyzstan in the future.

Update Todd M. Anderson (’86 BIAT) and his wife, Parvin, are grateful their daughter, Bahareh, formerly from Iran, received her U.S. Citizenship in July. The Andersons live in Euless, Texas. Their story was featured in the Summer 2003 issue of the NOW magazine.

Each August it’s an exciting and moving (no pun intended) experience to welcome hundreds of new students to campus. This year was no exception. Students from across the country and around the world arrived with their lives packed into cars and suitcases. You could see their eagerness to begin their LETU experience. I’m privileged to work with a devoted admissions team. This team guides new students through the admissions and financial aid process. Our success is due, in large part, to the alumni and friends of LETU who share their stories and experiences with others. As we celebrate LeTourneau’s 60th anniversary, we hope you will tell a student about your LETU experience. ajor General B. F. “Fred” and Billie Starr met in October 2002 at a Bible study kick-off dinner in San Antonio. Three months later, they were married. “As soon as we shook hands, we could tell there was something there” Billie says. “She seemed smart and straight forward; I was impressed from the beginning,” says Fred. So when he heard she was thinking about moving back to Kentucky, he wouldn’t have it. Fred was persuasive, and after a few ice cream sundaes, Billie changed her mind about leaving. Fred told Billie he wanted to announce to their Bible study group that they were sweethearts. At first Billie was hesitant, but Fred kept pursuing, and after three days, he had had enough, he was going to do it. That night Fred announced to the group that “Billie is going to be my sweetheart, and if I can, I’m going to make it permanent.” His persistence paid off; they married that December. This couple loves the Lord, each other and LeTourneau University. Fred’s relationship with LeTourneau University began in 1985 when, thenchairman of the board William Stegall invited him to be a trustee. Fred was elected in 1987 to the LeTourneau University Board of Trustees and served until 2003 when he became a trustee emeritus. Fred’s love for the university is unshakable, so soon after they were married, Fred brought his new bride on her first visit to the Longview campus, which she said reminded her of her home state of Kentucky. “I immediately saw in the university what Fred has seen for 20 years,” she says. “The time was extraordinary! I could feel the love of the staff, especially Dr. Bud’s staff.” “At LeTourneau University, they are demonstrating their Christianity,” Fred says. “God is blessing LeTourneau University like I have never seen anywhere else. It has been such a pleasure to serve on a board whose individual and corporate interest is serving the Lord and our students.”
To the Starrs, stepping onto campus is like stepping into a revival. They enjoy fellowshipping with students, other board members, faculty and staff. While visiting recently, Fred walked around the construction site for the new S. E. Belcher Jr. Chapel and Performance Center. “I was thinking about students who need help and can’t get it if they don’t make A’s,” he says. “I thought singling out an average student would be a good thing. These students want to graduate and are working as hard as they can. They need a source that recognizes that.” As a result, the Starrs have set up an endowed scholarship to benefit LeTourneau’s average students with financial need. Billie says the scholarship is for students “who want to learn, try to learn, and are doing their very best to learn. The money couldn’t be better spent than how LeTourneau University will be able to use it.” Fred agrees. “I hope it grows so that it can help several students a year!” n
