LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

D

uring the most recent political election cycle, we saw firsthand the impact of choices, words and behavior; both personally and collectively. Although the recent election is just one example of the many things happening in our world, it is a reminder of how quick people are to tear down instead of building up. In some ways, we are seeing a microcosm of the deconstruction of the very things we value and hold dearest. In Ephesians 4:29, believers and followers of Jesus Christ are instructed, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” The current societal landscape truly underscores the importance of LeTourneau University’s vision and mission. Not only is LeTourneau University a community committed to integrating our faith with our work… we are a community of builders. LeTourneau students, faculty and alumni have been building for decades. It is the building of our faith, the building up of people, the building of companies, the building of lifelong friendships, the building of inventions, the building of the future that allows us to fulfill our God-given calling and to be one of the leading Christian University community’s in the world. This past summer, Christianity Today published a “Meet the Makers” edition in which they highlighted leaders representing a diverse group of professional disciplines who are shaping the future and modeling the unique faith and work integration. We at LeTourneau are thrilled with the national attention that Christianity Today directed to the important topics of integrating faith, work and building for eternity. And the good news is that those of us who are a part of the LeTourneau University family celebrate the fact that we’ve been doing this for a long time. For more than 70 years, students have come to LeTourneau University to answer God’s vocational calling, pursue knowledge and integrate their faith into every facet of their life. A LeTourneau University student’s story does not begin or end at LeTourneau University; their story is built at LeTourneau. This is the role and responsibility of the 21st Century Christian University. This is LeTourneau, and we are #LeTourneauBuilt.

Building the Future through Science Written by Janet Ragland

rmed with plastic spoons and sandwich baggies, the freshman biology students in Dr. Greg Frederick’s freshman biology class fanned out across the LETU campus to dig in the dirt in search of bugs, but not the insect kind. They were looking for microscopic viruses called “bacteriophages” as part of the Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Sciences (PHAGES) program, an undergraduate research project in partnership with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Science Education Alliance. Dr. Greg Frederick well understands the importance of getting undergraduate students involved in meaningful, hands-on research. He remembers when he got the first taste of doing hands-on research as a college student, and it hooked him.

That is why Frederick invested the time and energy to apply to have LETU selected as one of only 101 universities worldwide—one of only a handful of universities in Texas and the only one in East Texas— partnering with the PHAGES program. He wants his students to get hooked on doing research on which to build their futures. Phages are important because they are viruses that attack bacteria, and as bacteria mutate, the phages can also mutate and can kill the bacteria. “Certain strains of tuberculosis are particularly anti8

biotic-resistant and mutate quickly,” Frederick said. “Using these viruses as alternative treatment could potentially solve problems of tuberculosis and other antibiotic-resistant diseases.”

around them, characterize those viruses, sequence and annotate their genomes and then have opportunity to present their results at academic conferences and to publish in scientific journals,” Frederick said.

Howard Hughes Medical Institute launched the Science Education Alliance to support scientists and educators to advance biomedical research and train the next generation through education, discovery and leadership.

One of Frederick’s first students to discover a new virus through the PHAGES program was Brian “Blake” Maxfeldt of Katy, Texas. Maxfeldt hopes to become an orthodontist.

“This Science Education Alliance enables our students to do meaningful research as they isolate previously unidentified viruses from the environment

Maxfeldt tested a soil sample from a flower bed just outside the Solheim Athletic and Recreational Center on the LETU campus and isolated the phage that was determined to be a new discovery. Grateful for the opportunity to do hands-on research as an undergraduate, Maxfeldt chose to name the new, novel virus the “Solheim Virus,” in honor of long-time LETU Board of Trustees member John Solheim and his family, for whom the Solheim Center is named. “I’ve learned so many skills throughout the process that I feel will put me at a great advantage when I apply for graduate school,” he said. Funds are currently being sought to conduct genomic sequencing and further molecular and bioinformatics characterization of the Solheim virus and the 20 other viruses isolated by LETU students which have yet to be fully characterized. More detailed information about the Solheim virus can be found online at: http://phagesdb.org/phages/Solheim ■

Creativity and Problem Solving: Building Better Engineers

Written by Janet Ragland

Creativity is defined by Merriam Webster as the ability to make new things or think of new ideas. So how does creativity impact engineering design? And can creativity be taught? LeTourneau University assistant professor of mechanical engineering Dr. Ben Caldwell has received nearly $300,000 in grant funding from the National Science Foundation for research on improving engineering creativity and problem solving. Titled “Understanding How Engineers Draw from their Knowledge and Experience to Solve Design Problems Creatively,” Caldwell’s research seeks to understand how people generate ideas and how to then teach and nurture that skill effectively. Partnering with him as a research associate is LETU psychology professor Dr. Vicki Sheafer. “Psychologists have been studying creativity for over a century,” Caldwell said. “And while there is much debate on the topic, it is clear creativity is valuable, but difficult to define. One aspect of creativity, defined by psychologists, is called spontaneous flexibility, which is the ability to generate diverse and appropriate responses to a given situation. “For example, a spontaneously flexible person might find several new ways to use conventional objects,” Caldwell said. “Psychologists have measured spontaneous flexibility in this way: by asking people to generate many possible uses for common household objects and examining their responses. “Engineers regularly solve problems, and in the process, often come up with several options for solving those problems,” Caldwell said. “We want to help engineering students explore those options and teach them how to select the

10

NOW Magazine | Fall 2016

best ones. If we can understand better where creativity fits into the problem-solving process, we can better teach engineers how to solve problems.”

Collaborating on creativity research are, seated from left, Dr. Benjamin Caldwell and Dr. Vicki Sheafer, and standing from left, graduate students, Caleb Bennetts and Avery Cheeley.

Caldwell knows that it requires creativity to be an effective engineer. His research currently provides student subjects with two types of tasks: problem finding and problem solving. On the problem-finding task, subjects are asked to generate numerous ideas on how they can use a specified object, such as a drinking cup. The results are judged for quantity, novelty, breadth and quality of ideas.

On the problem-solving task, subjects are presented with an open-ended problem and asked to find multiple ways to solve the problem. For example, the problem could be that drying dishes by hand takes too much time. So, how do you solve that problem? Solutions could include everything from putting dishes in a dish drainer or preheated oven to coating dishes with a fast-dry rinse material, using a hair dryer or even using disposable paper plates. Caldwell said he started the project specifically with engineering majors. One of his graduate students is working on his master’s thesis based on this creativity research. Caldwell currently employs two more students in this year’s research budget. The students gain real-world research experience, working side-by-side with their professor. The research also has expanded to add psychology majors and will look at differences among individuals in these fields.

Creativity and problem solving is a process that can apply to any field of study, he said. Caldwell has plans to partner with other universities such as his alma mater, Clemson University, and the Air Force Academy to find additional subjects. The result of the research could help Caldwell specifically identify how to help engineers expand their cognitive thinking and improve their ability to access creativity and apply it to engineering to build better engineers for the future. “Our goal at LeTourneau University is to equip graduates who excel in creativity and turn that creativity into solutions that serve our world,” Caldwell said. ■

Faith@Work Summit in Dallas Deepens Understanding, Broadens Reach Written by Janet Ragland

“God needs Christian businessmen as much as he needs pastors.” That is what LETU founder R.G. LeTourneau was told by his pastor after he committed his life to the Lord. The same is true today. God wants Christian engineers, nurses, pilots, teachers, scientists, writers and pastors to all see their workplaces as their front line of influence for His kingdom. LeTourneau saw no divide between Sunday’s worship and Monday’s work, and didn’t see a lot of use for a religion that only worked one day a week. He believed that any kind of work glorified God when done with excellence.

For more than 30 years, Dr. Bill Peel has coached people to discover their calling, understand the significance of their work and become spiritually influential in their workplaces. He is a thought leader in the global Faith at Work movement and, as the founding executive director for LeTourneau University’s Center for Faith and Work, has rebuilt LETU’s reputation as a leading voice in this movement. Representing LETU, Peel has spoken at numerous conferences and churches across the country about how people can discover their role in God’s plan and build bridges of influence for God’s kingdom in their everyday lives—especially at work. 12

NOW Magazine | Fall 2016

Recently, from Oct. 27-29, Peel and his team co-hosted more than 400 academic, business and church leaders from all over the globe for the Faith@Work Summit at the Westin Galleria in Dallas, Texas. The Summit was a hands-on, working conference, providing time and space for those attending to collaborate and develop new initiatives to further their individual and collective work of glorifying God through the workplace. Attendees grappled with ideas on how best to extend Christ’s transforming power and presence into workplaces around the world—to take the faith at work movement both deeper and broader—learning together from each other and seeking thoughtful answers to three questions: 1. How can we help Christians deepen their understanding of what it means to follow Christ in their particular line of work? 2. How can we broaden the reach of the Faith at Work movement to new audiences that remain largely unaddressed? 3. How can Christians in business, workplace ministries, Christian schools, universities and seminaries work with the church to develop whole-life disciples?

“Fueled by the Holy Spirit, today’s Faith at Work movement has made great strides toward spreading a biblical view of work and calling worldwide,” Peel said. “Yet amidst encouraging progress, Christians in the workplace are in dire need of mentors and materials to show them what it means to be a whole-life disciple in their specific work. Also, whole segments of society remain largely untouched by the truth that they can serve Christ in their daily work.” Peel cited statistics that showed 70 percent of workers were unsure how their work serves God, 78 percent said their work was less valuable than a pastor’s work and 60 percent had no clarity about God’s calling on their lives. “The Faith at Work movement is reaching a tipping point, with more than a thousand workplace ministries being launched over the past few decades,” Peel said. Hundreds of books have been written, including his own book, “Workplace Grace: Becoming a Spiritual Influence at Work,” the leading text on workplace evangelism around the world. “We know our work matters to God,” Peel said. “God made us for work. He has uniquely equipped each of us to further His kingdom through our work.” Our university founder, R.G. LeTourneau, understood that, too. He was called into business as a mission field in the mid-20th century. Called “God’s Businessman,” he knew that by accepting God as your business partner, there was no limit to what could be achieved.

Dr. Bill Peel co-hosted the Faith@Work Summit in Dallas.

LETU President Dr. Dale A. Lunsford led the opening prayer at the Faith@Work Summit in Dallas. “LeTourneau University is the only Christian university founded by a business leader,” Peel said. “We, as Christians, have an opportunity to make a difference in the places where we work, but also at LETU, equipping the next generation of Christian leaders for their future workplaces. The integration of faith and work has always been part of the DNA of LeTourneau University, and it continues today as LETU’s vision is claiming every workplace in every nation for Christ.” LeTourneau University is a leader in this important movement, and while we may be a small school, the vision of graduating students who see their work as a holy calling and claim the workplace as their mission field is a big vision—one with eternal results. ■

LeTourneau University’s Center for Faith and Work was founded in 2011 to equip, connect and mobilize students, alumni and the global Christian community to discover their role in God’s plan and build bridges of influence for God’s Kingdom to the workplace. Peel represented LETU and shared the story of R.G. LeTourneau at the first Faith@Work Summit held in Boston in 2014, which can be seen online at http://bit.ly/2fx37f0. Great resources from the 2016 Dallas Summit can be found with the Twitter hashtag #FAWS16 and at the event website www.FWSummit. org. Building With Innovation:

LETU Patents Microwave Welding, Soldering, Brazing Device Written by Janet Ragland and Dr. Yoni Adonyi

O

n a crisp November day last year in Chicago, LeTourneau University welding/materials joining professor Dr. Yoni Adonyi walked across a stage at FABTECH to receive the highest honorary title of AWS Fellow. He was inducted into the 2015 Class of Fellows of the American Welding Society as recognition for his distinguished 40-year career accomplishments, sustained professionalism and contributions to welding-materials joining education and research in the field of welding science and technology.

This year, his name is on a brand new U.S. government patent, along with engineering professor Dr. Seung Kim and two LETU engineering alumni, Allen Worcester and Ithamar Glumac, all of whom are listed as co-inventors of U.S. Patent 9,374,853 for a closed-loop microwave joining device capable of joining difficult-to-weld dissimilar combinations of advanced metals to ceramics and/or to polymers. LETU’s new U.S. government patent is the result of nearly five years of research. Faculty members, graduate students and engineering and engineering technology undergraduate students all worked alongside each other on this research, with visiting international students from Brazil giving them a flavor of the real world when engineers and engineering technologists work side by side on different aspects of the same project. 14

NOW Magazine | Fall 2016

The new discovery was based on an actual industrial need to join thermoelectric ceramics to copper substrate without cracking an intermetallic formation. The problem with furnace soldering of thermoelectric generators was the extremely low thermal conductivity of the bismuth telluride semiconductor elements, which resulted in solder overflow and brittle intermetallics when joined to copper. Therefore, the service life of the components was greatly reduced, while also limiting the peak temperature at which they could operate. With an initial $125,000 in funding from II-VI Foundation, the materials joining engineering research and development team, led by Adonyi, started developing laser and ultrasonic welding solutions for Marlow Industries in Dallas, Texas. A pre-college intern, Nathan Sumrall, brought the problem to LETU. Engineering professors Robert Warke in MJE and Seung Kim in EE got involved. As the microwave concept took shape, undergraduate research associates Mark Taylor and Riley Wyers started verifying the early concept of eddy current heating of metals in microwaves with plasma suppression. Corey Phelps was the first student researcher to use finite element analysis (FEA) to model the waveguide concept with the moving back wall producing constructive and destructive interference at the target.

In areas such as research, where failure is often a possible outcome, you should never doubt the truthfulness of a Christian innovator. This quality is common to all of us and can be traced back to the tradition of our founder R.G. LeTourneau. —Dr. Yoni Adonyi Several undergraduate student teams worked on the initial design of magnetron and insulator setup (team led by Ithamar Glumac), plasma suppression and thermal camera optimization (team led by Tim Privitt), possible use of sustained plasma use as an alternate

heat source (team led by Andrew Stall) and weld fixturing and efficiency of energy absorbed (team led by Davis Wilson). At this point, the total number of students working on the project for academic credit exceeded 40. NOW Magazine | Fall 2016

15

Two graduate engineering students, Allen Worcester and Derek Hoyt based their masters’ theses on the project, which resulted in two peer-reviewed publications in the Research Supplement of the American Welding Journal. Worcester set up good commercial models and a working closed-loop control system. Hoyt discovered how sample orientation, compression fixture and use of ferrite susceptors improved the reliability of the system. Electrical Engineering Professor Emeritus Dr. Bill Graff was the first to suggest visualizing the electromagnetic single-wave energy peaks by laying marshmallow along the waveguide. The distance between the burn peaks represented the wavelength—an experiment later repeated using Play Dough—with the closedloop control already working. Engineering professor Dr. Martin Iordache provided Worcester advice on the closed-loop controller design, which made completion of the controller possible. Enhanced by the use of predictive simulation software, the plasma-less, closed-loop controlled system can be used to solder, braze or weld unusual combinations of metals, ceramics, polymers and composites. Potential uses for the device are where critical joints between advanced metals, ceramics and composites cannot be made any other way in the electronics, defense and aerospace industries. While the vast majority of microwave joining applications focus on polymers, or plastics, this invention tackles the other two major material types, advanced manufacturing of metals and ceramics. “We started from real problems and developed novel solutions which benefit mankind,” Adonyi said. “Hundreds of ideas came forth from students and faculty, fully aware of their empowerment from God to subdue Creation.

“I believe Christian engineers are different from secular ones, not necessarily in intelligence and persistence, but in their daring and honest approach to a challenge,” Adonyi said. “In areas such as research, where failure is often a possible outcome, you should never doubt the truthfulness of a Christian innovator. This quality is common to all of us and can be traced back to the tradition of our founder, R.G. LeTourneau.” By definition, welding joins two separate pieces of material through high energy, developing a direct and powerful bond. Welding engineering at LETU is also a powerful bond that brings faculty and students together through innovation. LeTourneau University considers the patent as the beginning of new and exciting partnerships with those seeking to join advanced metals and ceramics, as well as polymers. Anyone interested in discussing new ideas with LETU, please contact Dr. Yoni Adonyi (yoniadonyi@letu.edu), or LETU’s Director of the Office of Sponsored Programs, Paul Boggs (paulboggs@letu.edu).

Many students contributed to this research over the years in invaluable ways. If you are a student who worked on any part of this project, or a related design project, we are grateful for your contribution and would like to hear from you. 16

LETU Aviation Celebrates 60 Years Written by Glenda Vosburgh

L

eTourneau University’s College of Aviation and Aeronautical Science marks its 60th anniversary this year, and its story tracks with the history of the aeronautics industry over that same time period. The first and only comprehensive four-year college aviation program in the state of Texas, LETU’s aviation program has graduated students who went on to run aviation companies, work for the military, serve in missions and work at every major airline, but its beginnings were a bit more humble. The program officially started in 1956, but its roots stretch all the way back to 1946 because Mr. LeTourneau used airplanes to travel to his many manufacturing plants around the country. He is best known for using several old A-26 bombers that had been converted to civil use. Mr. LeTourneau also used the airplanes to travel to his many speaking engagements around the country and often took a student along if they were from the city he was traveling to. In addition to his manufacturing plant, he owned an aviation business in Longview which supported the airplanes he used for his travels, but also serviced airplanes for other customers. It was this business that provided the means of starting LETU’s aviation program in 1956 under the leadership of Ernie Hansen, who later became a missionary pilot and mechanic in Peru. Over the past 60 years LETU’s aviation program has grown from offering a two-year program to a full four-year aviation degree. In the early days, aviation classes were taught in old, wooden barracks on the Longview campus. After classes, students went out to the airport to practice what they learned. 24

In 1958, the airplane and engine maintenance courses were certified by the Civil Aeronautics Authority (CAA), the predecessor to the Federal Aviation Administration, and were offered in a two-year program. Once students completed the program, they were allowed to take the Civil Air Authority (CAA) exam for their Airframe and Engine (A&E) mechanics license.

When LeTourneau Technical Institute became LeTourneau College in 1961, aviation students could then take regular college courses and earn an Associate of Science degree. They also could qualify to take the Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) exams from the new Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to receive their mechanics certificate. That same year, Dale Crane and Glenn Ellis, the “founding fathers” of the aviation program, persuaded the college to open a ground and flight school. In the mid-1960s, the program was divided into two departments—the flight school, chaired by Ellis, and the mechanic school, chaired by Crane. In the late 70s, the school introduced its first four-year aviation degree. This Aviation Technology Bachelor of Science degree (ATBS) included curriculum for both professional pilot and A&P mechanic certifications. By 1980, the school began purchasing its own fleet of airplanes after previously leasing planes and office space from Flight Specialties, a local company that performed maintenance on the training aircraft. In 1984, the college purchased a flight hangar at the East Texas Regional Airport (GGG) to support flight training, provide offices for the flight faculty and instructors and provide a hangar for college staff to maintain and service the school’s airplanes.

The aviation program was the first college program in the state of Texas to have an air traffic control program, and it remains the only four-year university in the state that offers a comprehensive collegiate aviation program. All training, labs and classes are taught by LETU instructors and faculty. Fred Ritchey Jr. is the current dean of the College of Aviation and Aeronautical Science. The program now owns 15 airplanes, and has about 230 college students enrolled, as well as about 60 high school students taking dual credit aviation courses. The program offers 17 degree and concentration options. The Paul and Betty Abbott Aviation Center, named for alumnus Paul Abbott and his wife, at East Texas Regional Airport is one of LeTourneau University’s largest facilities and one of the nicest aviation facilities at any university nationwide. Additionally, students may now enroll in the college’s aviation management program and receive their flight training at LETU’s new training facility at the McKinney National Airport in McKinney, Texas, a suburb of Dallas, Texas. Aviation alumni from all through the decades are encouraged to attend the Aviation Reunion at Homecoming in April. ■

Putting God First in the Workplace—At Sea Written by Glenda Vosburgh

T

he impression made by a simple prayer was the clincher for Tim Markley when it came to choosing the college he would attend.

After graduating in 2003 from Highpoint Baptist Academy in Geigertown, Penn., Markley started visiting colleges.

“LeTourneau University has a large alumni group in Pennsylvania, and I went to one of their meetings,” he says. He remembers the group was friendly and welcoming, but that wasn’t what made the biggest impact. “They said a prayer before the meeting started,” he says. “That was one of the reasons I went to LeTourneau. It seemed to me that they were putting prayer first, and that stood out to me. I’d met with several other Christ-centered colleges, but LeTourneau was the only one that prayed before they started telling me about the school.” Today, Markley is a strategic weapons officer stationed on a naval submarine—the U.S.S. Alabama, 32

NOW Magazine | Fall 2016

stationed at Naval Base Kitsap in Bangor, Washington. The Alabama is an Ohio-class nuclear-powered fleet ballistic submarine—the largest submarine ever built for the United States Navy. It is one of eight ballisticmissile subs stationed at this base. As a student at LeTourneau University, Markley majored in materials joining engineering, studying about the best use of materials to be welded or joined together in building things. LeTourneau is one of only three schools in the United States that offered that major. While still a student, he was approached by a Navy recruiter about enlisting. Even though he hadn’t really considered going into the military before, Markley recognized the opportunity to use his engineering degree in the Navy and earn money to help pay college costs. Markley entered the officer recruiting program in 2006. He graduated from both LeTourneau in Longview, Texas, and Officer Candidate School in Newport, R.I. in 2008. He then completed Submarine Officer Basic Course in Groton, Conn., and was stationed on the U.S.S. Scranton at Norfolk, Va., where he was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade.

Next, he was stationed at Norfolk for two years of land duty under the Commander Submarine Force Atlantic. He was promoted to Lieutenant and recommended for Department Head. His experience at LeTourneau helped prepare him for military life, Markley says. “Things are so different in the military from what you were used to, but I learned to adapt, and I learned that keeping my focus on Christ helps me stand strong in my faith no matter what is going on—even in the workplace. We always took the time to pray before every class, but we still had time to complete all of our work on time, and sometimes we even finished early.” There are many examples in his life of times that maintaining a strong faith has helped him, but he points to two specifically. “I’ve been blessed to always be under the command of individuals who are Christians,” he says. “Even at times when the person whose command I was under was not a Christian, that person got transferred to another position and was replaced by someone who was a Christian. It showed me that if you put God first, and he is 100 percent of your focus, you don’t have to worry about anything.” He also saw God’s hand at work in meeting the woman he would marry. “I used to worry about meeting someone,” he says, “but once I stopped worrying about it and turned it over to God, it happened.”

He met Cherie Lowry at a Sub Ball in April 2014, and they married the following October. Their son, Timothy James, was born April 5, 2016, but since much of a military seaman’s life is spent at sea, it happened while he was on deployment. Markley got his first look at his son on May 14, 2016. Markey continues to maintain ties to his university by supporting several of its organizations. “I had a great time at LeTourneau,” he says, “and I built lifelong friends there.” ■

It showed me that if you put God first, and he is 100 percent of your focus, you don’t have to worry about anything. —Tim Markley NOW Magazine | Fall 2016

All Things and All Authority in Times of Political Turbulence Written by Dr. John C. Barrett

I

was attending a Sunday school class one morning in Taipei, Taiwan when an unfamiliar man joined us. The class leader began the lesson but was soon interrupted with somewhat vague and unrelated theological questions from the newcomer. Frustrated, the leader tried to quickly address the questions, only to be interrupted again and again. Finally, the class ended without resolution.

34

NOW Magazine | Fall 2016

A few of us lingered behind to hear the continued questioning. It finally became apparent that the man was having a crisis of faith over the recent Taiwanese elections. “How could God allow such a result?” On November 8th this year America elected a new president. The preceding campaign not only divided Americans, but also evangelicals, along social and class lines. Emotions and opinions were strong on all sides. We don’t usually associate political struggles with crises of faith, but history teaches us that they can and have challenged the faith and unity of American believers. In the 1800s, politics geographically divided northern and southern Christians to the extent that denominations split decades before the Civil War. No less than Abraham Lincoln noted in his 2nd Inaugural Address: “The prayers of both could not be answered. That of neither has been answered fully.” The ecclesiastical rift would take decades to heal. During World War I, politics divided the Church along generational lines with older Christians staunchly supporting the war but younger Christians questioning not just the war effort, but the veracity of a religion that would support it. This lead to what historian Robert Handy dubbed an American Religious Depression during the 1920s and 1930s with sharp declines in church attendance and contributions.

Will the political divisions within the church today ultimately have similar repercussions? I sincerely hope not. Yet, we should recognize the challenges of trusting God with the future of our country during times of political turbulence. When the government is to our liking, it is relatively easy to affirm that the authority over us is, as Romans 13 says, “from God.” When we feel threatened by our government, however, acknowledging that God is somehow at work is considerably harder. In some respects, trusting God with the future of our country is as challenging as trusting God with the future of our life, family or finances. When times are good, we easily affirm that “in all things God works for the good of those who love him,” but when times are bad, it is nearly impossible to see how the challenges in our midst are somehow working to our benefit. What the Bible describes as life feels like death. For those disappointed with the outcome of the election, it may be a challenge to trust that our new government is somehow, “from God” and working for our good. Conversely, for those pleased with the outcome of the election, it may be a challenge to gracefully respond to those who are struggling with fears. Yet history gives us both perspective on our current political challenges, as well as the costs of letting differences within the church turn into divisions. ■

LETU’s Assistant Professor of Political Science, Dr. John C. Barrett, is a presidential scholar who holds a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service from Georgetown University, a Master of Arts in International Relations/International Affairs from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and a Ph.D. in Religion, Politics and Society from Baylor University. He also has completed academic programs at the University of Peking and the American University in Cairo.

Studying God’s Highest Creation Written by Janet Ragland

E

ntering her mentor’s home in late summer of 1995 in Cincinnati, Ohio, Vicki Sheafer was full of dread. Her high school guidance counselor Suzanne Parker, who had been Vicki’s beloved mentor since Vicki had been in junior high, was battling breast cancer. Vicki had returned, all grown up, having just completed her inaugural year of teaching psychology classes at LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas. Cancer had ravaged her mentor’s body, which was physically weak from surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation, but Vicki could still see that Jesus was alive and well in the sparkle in her eyes. Vicki went to her mentor’s home to encourage her, but left that day feeling a new sense of encouragement, herself, about how God was already using her in her new profession teaching students. Her mentor died a few days after that last visit.

“I saw how she helped people, cared about people, and how people were drawn to her,” Vicki said. Her late mentor had served as her junior high and high school guidance counselor, as well as one of her church youth group leaders. “I went to public schools, so it wasn’t like she was spouting off about the Lord left and right, and yet she was,” Vicki said. “It was in how she treated people. I wanted to be just like her.” When Vicki left home for college, she studied psychology as an undergraduate, just like her mentor did. “Outside of my own parents, she was the one I learned the most from in caring for people,” Vicki said. “She was the most compassionate person I had met in my young life.” Vicki double-majored in psychology and sociology at Union College, then completed her master’s degree and her Ph.D. at Miami University in Ohio. She began teaching psychology at LETU in August 1994, just three months after finishing her doctoral degree in May 1994. “This is the only ‘real job’ I’ve ever had, and hopefully, it will be my last,” she said, adding that she had always known she wanted to teach. “Whenever we

played school as children, I was always the teacher, and my younger sister was my reluctant student.” Vicki said she was shy as a child, more so than her younger sister and brother, and it took a while for her to get comfortable with being herself, instead of patterning herself after others. “As an undergrad,” Vicki said, “I realized God already had a Suzanne Parker. He needed a Vicki Sheafer. I can’t be her. I needed to be me. I realized that God can use everyone. We all have different talents. God made us uniquely. Each has a unique job to fulfill.” Vicki excelled at school and was a perfectionist who began to allow herself to worry excessively. “Perfectionism is a two-edged sword,” she said. “On one hand, you are a high achiever, but it also can create deep wounds in your psyche that are really self-inflicted. If you don’t live up to your own expectations, you feel you have let others down or that you are letting God down. It took a long time for me to mature enough to understand that God was going to love me regardless. Nobody expected perfection but me.”

NOW Magazine | Fall 2016

39

To come to that understanding, Vicki experienced a particularly dark time in her life, shortly after her divorce, when she ended up in the hospital with clinical depression.

the scholarship of teaching and learning. She also is conducting creativity research with engineering professor Dr. Ben Caldwell. (See creativity research story page 10.)

“I finally realized I don’t have to be perfect, I don’t have to apologize for being who I am, I don’t have to do anything but rest in God’s hands and let Him love me,” she said.

As a social psychologist, Vicki studies people in their social context, how they think about, influence and relate to one another.

Vicki understands that the deepest spiritual growth is forged in the valleys of our lives. “I really wish we learned more on the mountaintops,” she said with a laugh. “But those hardest lessons have become so precious to me. It is because they were so hard to come by, it was like they were the crucible of the fire that really engraved that on my heart. “The Lord has helped me to release me from the fear, guilt and shame that was all self-inflicted,” she said. “You don’t realize that the enemy has a hold of your mind. It finally dawned on me, I was living in fear all the time. I was afraid to screw up. It kept me from doing a lot of things because I didn’t want to fail. “God doesn’t want us to live in fear,” she said. “He didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. That’s my favorite translation of that verse in 2 Timothy 1:7. That term, ‘a sound mind’ really speaks to my heart.” Vicki says that dark experience 13 years ago has enabled her to teach and minister to her students more freely, deeply and purely than ever before. “I think some of what comes out of the hard times is compassion, understanding, forgiveness, and you understand grace in a whole new way,” she said. “God redeems the darkest days—if you will let Him.” Today, Vicki is an award-winning researcher and professor, having twice received LETU’s highest teaching honor—the Robert H. Selby Award for Excellence in Teaching. Her research interests focus on

study human beings, how can that not be infused with how God created us, what he created us for and what the devil has attempted to destroy in God’s highest creation? “When you are training the next generation of Christian psychologists, as Christian professionals, people who are going out and ministering to a lost and dying world, you feel that sense that this is really important work,” Vicki said. “And you want to prepare them the absolute best way you can. A

large part of that is not just the knowledge base, but helping them to grow spiritually. “If students leave here four years later and are just smarter, then we haven’t done what we need to do,” she said. “We need to help them grow spiritually, to help them mature. We need to give them an apologetic. We need to impart some of that passion, not only for the profession, but for the people they will be ministering to.” ■

NEW FIELD HOUSE Sees First Full Season Written by James Wallace, Sports Information Director

T

his fall marks the first full season that LeTourneau University outdoor athletic teams have had the opportunity to move into their new athletic field house inside the Joyce Family Athletic Village, as men’s and women’s soccer, softball and baseball players all share the facility. Fully funded by generous donations as a part of the university’s successful For Such A Time As This campus improvement campaign, the $1.3-million field house is home to sleek and beautiful locker rooms for all four teams, as well as an athletic training facility, laundry room and a conference room used for coaches and recruiting. “The athletic field house has been a dream come true for our teams,” said LETU Athletic Director Terri Deike. “Thanks to the generosity of our donors, these studentathletes have a beautiful facility to call home that is in close proximity to the fields where they practice and compete. We are very grateful for the field house and the opportunity it gives our teams and department.” The field house has already made an impact on recruiting athletes, since prospective studentathletes are given a tour of the facility on campus visits. It is a major selling point as they make their college decisions. This fall, the athletic field house saw two great seasons by the LeTourneau men’s and women’s soccer programs. The women had four student-athletes honored with all-conference awards and made their second straight appearance in the ASC tournament, their fourth appearance in program history. The men’s 42

program had five individuals recognized by the conference, including junior goalkeeper Brian Howell and freshman forward Zachariah Malik, who were named second-team all-ASC. “The teams really appreciate the new field house. It has been a big motivation for all of our sports,” said junior men’s soccer player Israel Madrid. “It has attracted many recruits and inspired them to perform at higher levels. It also really helps us maintain team unity as we spend a lot of time together in the locker room. We also have had to maintain cleanliness as we try to keep everything looking nice.”

With the opening of the new field house, the men’s and women’s cross country teams were able to take over the vacated locker rooms in Solheim Center, and for the first time have a place to call their own. The cross country program had a great season with four all-conference runners, including a secondplace finish by sophomore Michael Field and sixth place finish by senior Daniel Moses. On the women’s side, freshman Alexis Segura finished sixth in her first conference race and senior Elisa Hamm earned a tenth-place finish. Both were named first-team all-ASC after the meet. Senior Taber Miyauchi was a top runner the entire season and was the favorite to win the conference championship. Miyauchi unfortunately collapsed in the final 800 meters of the race as he pushed toward the finish. The mechanical engineering major from Grand Lake, Colorado was named the ASC runner of the week five times during the regular season. Miyauchi was named a CoSIDA Academic All-American this past June after his third-place conference finish and 4.0 GPA during the 2015 season. Baseball player Taylor Empke was also named a CoSIDA Academic All-American for his combined performance athletically and in the classroom. This spring, the LeTourneau baseball and softball teams will be using the new athletic field house for their second season, since the facility was completed in time for the 2016 teams to move in before their seasons began. ■

Relationships Matter.

Almost every LeTourneau University student learns about LETU through a relationship with one of our alumni, a friend, a family member, a youth pastor or another person in their lives. One of the greatest donations YOU can make to LeTourneau University is to tell others about us. Help us recruit the next generation of LETU students! So before you discard this magazine after reading it, recycle it by sharing it with a friend or high school students. Or share it with your church youth pastor or local high school counselor. You could even leave it in the waiting room of your doctor’s office on your next visit.

We are blessed to have you in our LETU family!
