LeTourneau Realities Magazine Spring 2012

Page 1

We don’t take it for granted that getting a degree from LeTourneau University is not exactly a cakewalk. LETU is a university that will challenge you to really use every ounce of your brilliance and creativity. And when you win the game and walk across the stage to collect your degree, you’ll do it with extreme pride and awesome career opportunities. This magazine represents only a little taste of what it’s like here at LeTourneau University. So don’t get the crazy idea that this magazine is everything we are. There’s just too much good stuff to squeeze it all on a few pages. We don’t even try. We just highlight some of the cool things that are going on right now. So if you’d like to see more, we’ve got a bunch of other issues of Realities magazine online. Check them out at www.letu.edu/realities

Sure, classrooms are a big part of the whole university thing. And sure, you may feel like you live in them every now and then. But there’s a reason you think ‘dorm’ when you imagine life off at college. There’s nothing like spending hours on end hanging out and studying with friends, especially here at LETU (just don’t tell your mom it’s in that order). Floor unity is major, and you can bank on endless opportunities to cram for tests or cram into a room with all your besties for a movie marathon (or cram as many balloons as possible into the hallway…).

Choose from more than 10 living options, including residence halls and apartments. We also offer dedicated society, international and Honors housing. All of our residence halls either opened or have been seriously renovated within little more than the past decade. They’re also all single-gender and offer plenty of sit-around space with cable TV and wireless Internet. No matter where you live on our campus, you’ll figure out fast that residence life is about way more than a comfortable place to sleep. It’s about four years surrounded by the people that will be here for you -- In one awesome place to be.

Aviation isn’t just flying planes. It’s also making them work and making them safe. LETU School of Aeronautical Science students book quality lab time learning everything from CAD to composites — In 14,118 square feet of lab space out at our Abbott Aviation Center. Major in Aircraft Systems to take a hands-on, high-tech spin on your aviation career. Choose a focus in computer science, maintenance management, or design, electrical or mechanical technology. Either way, you’ll earn your Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certification to land an in-demand career conquering complex aircraft systems and keeping planes in the sky.

LETU students recently won first place in the Southwest Regional Professional Aviation Maintenance Association (PAMA) Competition, where they pitted their skills against top tier aviation schools and took top honors in safety wiring, torqueing, riveting, precision measurement and electrical system trouble shooting challenges.

Every year, in honor and reverance of Monty Python and Holy Grail (one of the greatest movies ever made,) the guys of Tyler Hall’s Club floor don their cardboard armor and fight to the death (or at least until their armor falls apart). With the resonating clippity clop of coconut horse gallups, these denizens of corrugated concoctions can be seen galavanting across campus each fall. Every dorm floor at LeTourneau has a unique personality and unique traditions. The guys of Club think they live on the Holy Grail of floors. For at least one week, they embody that belief literally.

Every engineering student expects to spend hours and hours working on a senior design project. But not everyone expects to watch that project literally improve a child’s quality of life. Students participating in LeTourneau University’s Frontier Wheelchairs project use their engineering skills to make design improvements on wheelchairs in the developing world. To do so, they’re teaming up with Hope Haven International Ministries, which seeks to improve the living conditions of people with disabilities in 106 countries around the world. Our students spent the semester designing and building a footrest that improves adjustability and makes it easier for children to get in and out of their wheelchairs. And their designs didn’t just stay in the lab. The team took their project to Antigua, Guatemala, to test their prototype on the wheelchairs of disabled children in local orphanages and teach local fabricators how to implement their design.

What makes you happy? A face covered in whipped cream and Cocoa Puffs? An insanely cool talent show on one of the finest performance center stages in the U.S.? Midnight Capture The Flag competitions? Lake parties? Mystery Bus Tours? Movie nights? Seriously, what? If any of those things or the tons more that the Yellowjacket Activity Council puts on each year sound like fun, you’re gonna have to experience it all to believe it. This student led organization is ridiculous in the amount of cool they can cram into one school year. So come on. Wipe that ridiculous smile from your face, grab a box of Cocoa Puffs and let’s get to business.

With 13 intercollegiate sports to choose from, LeTourneau University YellowJackets aim for aces, grand slams, buzzer beaters, goals and finish lines in men’s basketball, baseball, cross country, golf, soccer and tennis — plus women’s basketball, softball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis and volleyball. Whether you’re in the game or cheering on the sidelines, LETU Athletics serves up some quality competition and is a major part of the campus community. Check out www.letuathletics.com for the latest scores, rosters, news and live stats.

Our athletic facilities recently received a major facelift, with more than $1.5 million in renovations over the past two years. The newly named Joyce Family Athletic Village is home to LETU’s soccer, baseball and softball fields, as well as the infamous intramural fields, where more than 700 students participated in outdoor showdowns this year. With new lighting, scoreboards, backstops, seating and more, there’s all the more reason to grab your YellowJacket spirit and get your game on.

LeTourneau life goes way beyond campus — Try beyond borders. Our Office of International Studies is your passport to the sort of flaunt-on-facebook, never-forget experiences from the fields of Uganda to the urban streets of South Korea. We get that college isn’t just about packing your brain with facts. It’s also about packing your bags for a jaw-dropping global journey. LETU students are studying all around the world, whether that’s through a faculty-led business trip to Europe, a journey to Greece or Turkey to make a Bible course come to life, or a semester-long stay in Australia, Spain, China and more. Meanwhile, students from more than 20 nations live and learn on the LETU campus, where international students are a major part of the mix.

A lab of LETU physics students showing off the fundamentally probabilistic nature of quantum mechanical phenomena means one thing: Enter at your own risk. Ok, maybe more than one. It also means we’re into proving theories here, like how learning by actually doing stuff (rather than just thinking about it) helps you get a solid job. This senior-level Optics course is just one of the countless ways our students take hands-on to a whole new level (so don’t worry if you have no clue what a wave-like diffraction pattern looks like).

At LETU, we get that you’re looking for a degree that will score you a solid job. That’s why we’re making it easy for you to graduate fully prepared to take on a career in counseling psychology, marriage and family therapy, clinical social work, school counseling and more. Our Bachelor of Science in Counseling Psychology is a four-year degree program filled with the sort of applied learning and in-depth practicum experience that makes the difference between a psych grad with a great vocabulary and one with the ability to actually sit down with a hurting human and help them work through life’s struggles. We also offer a Master of Arts in Marriage & Family Therapy — And here’s the cool part: You can graduate with both degrees in just five years. Contact your LETU Admissions Counselor for more information about how you can learn to combat dysfunction as a career.

Bald is beautiful. Really beautiful. Make-your-eyes-water gorgeous. When a group of students love their classmate so much that they voluntarily shave their heads so she won’t be alone fighting her cancer, yep, that’s LeTourneau. Showing the love of Jesus Christ is something that LETU students take seriously. Sacrificing their own self-image in the name of love is something that this group didn’t even consider much of a sacrifice. It’s just what you do when your good friend is fighting. You fight with her. And not a single strand of hair went to waste. The organization that provided our cancer-stricken student with a wig received quite a donation this week as this entire group of students donated their hair to make wigs for other patients. The local news media here ran a story on this crazy cool group of bald students. You can check it out at: www.letu.edu/bald or scan the bar code on your cell phone. So if you make it to campus anytime soon and see a group of hairless students roaming around, stop and tell them thanks. Thanks for taking the love of Christ Jesus as seriously as they do. If you are like us and think that these guys are beautiful, we think LETU may be the place for you.
