Really, really important stuff Time
New Zealand is one of the first places in the world to see the new day, 12 hours ahead of GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). In Summer, New Zealand uses ‘Daylight Saving’ with clocks put forward one hour to GMT + 13. Daylight saving begins on the last Sunday in September and ends on the first Sunday of the following April, when clocks are put back to GMT + 12. 2019 - 20 Daylight savings: Daylight saving begins 27th September 2020 Ends on 4th April 2021
Weather
New Zealand has a temperate climate with moderately high rainfall and many hours of sunshine. While the far north has subtropical weather during summer, and inland alpine areas of the South Island can be as cold as - 10°C (14°F) in winter, most of the country lies close to the coast, which means mild temperatures. The average New Zealand temperature decreases as you travel south. January and Febuary are the warmest months, and July is the coldest month of the year. In summer, the average maximum temperature ranges between 20 - 30°C (70-90°F) and in winter between 10 -15°C (50-60°F).

Out & About
Auckland or Tamaki Makaurau (in Maori) is New Zealand’s largest city and commercial hub. It is situated between two harbours and is often referred to as the “City of Sails,” due to the abundance of watersports and access to beaches and the sea. Located in an 11km wide isthmus surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and Tasman Sea, the city enjoys a mild, sub-tropical climate and diverse landscape ranging from golden beaches, bush-clad hills, native forest and 50 beautiful Hauraki Gulf Islands. The city is liberally scattered with dormant or extinct volcanoes and if you climb to the top of any one of them, chances are, you will be able to pick out at least half a dozen others!! Some of the best include Mt Eden which has a great example of a steep crater, One Tree Hill which is arguably the best viewpoint of the whole city and sits in the beautiful Cornwall Park. If it’s views you’re looking for, then take a trip up the Sky Tower, the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere, where you can experience spectacular 360-degree views of the city from the observation deck.
The adventurous can also try SkyJump New Zealand’s highest base jump - or the incredible SkyWalk, where you’ll walk around the outside of the Sky Tower on a platform high above the city for some extreme sightseeing.

Auckland -
Auckland is centred around its waterfront, that is also the main transport hub. The commuter ferry terminal, trains for travel to the south and west from nearby Britomart and the extensive bus networks all radiate out of this precinct.
DID YOU KNOW Auckland was first settled by the Maori people in approximately 1350. The Maori constructed terraced pa (fortified villages) on the volcanic peaks.
Nestled along Gladstone Rd, the Qualmark 4 Star ‘The Parnell Hotel & Conference Centre’ is the perfect base for your family adventures in Auckland, with free parking, free Wi-Fi and an onsite restaurant.

WAIHEKE ISLAND Waiheke Island is a haven of beautiful vineyards, olive groves and beaches, all just a 40-minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland. In landscape, lifestyle and experience, Waiheke is a world away. The white sandy beaches at Oneroa, Palm Beach and Onetangi slope gently down into the Hauraki Gulf and are perfect for swimming, kayaking, or having a picnic. If you’re a walker, explore the island’s trails which meander along cliff tops, down to the beaches and into cool enclaves of native forest. At the eastern end of the island the Stony Batter walkway leads you to a system of World War II gun emplacements and underground tunnels.
A short bus ride away is the popular family area of Mission Bay. Here, The Promenade, is one of Auckland’s original beachside hangouts, and these days has cafes, restaurants, fish and chip shops, ice cream parlours, FREE wifi in the area, an iconic fountain and new kids playground. There is a safe swimming beach and watersports such as kayaking and paddleboards, which you can rent.
Helensville is a friendly place for a swim and a refreshment stop, or stay a while! Only 40 minutes from downtown Auckland, it is the quitessential country town - green pastures, historic architecture and a friendly population of down-to-earth people.
Rangitoto is Auckland’s most iconic island, with its distinctive symmetrical cone and superb location just off the coast. A short scenic ferry ride across the harbour from downtown Auckland, the island is a favourite destination for hikers and day-trippers.
The town has two museums - one devoted to pioneer days; another that honours its railway heritage. Close to Helensville you’ll find Parakai Springs, a collection of naturally heated pools for swimming and water slides.

Out & About
A short ferry ride or a quick trip over the Auckland Harbour Bridge puts you on the North Shore. The North Shore region covers 120km of coastline and includes more than 30 sandy swimming beaches. Part of the North Shore’s appeal is that it is just a short drive from the city lights and downtown lifestyle of central Auckland, yet it has a real community feel and beachside character.
North Harbour Gymnastics
Gymnastics & Trampoline classes from toddlers to adults!
Firstly, visit the historic seaside village of Devonport. Discover small sandy beaches, a compact village centre bustling with cafes, shops and galleries, and two volcanic cones offering spectacular views. Exploring the underground tunnels, gun emplacements and fortifications at North Head is a must. The volcanic cone offers incredible 360-degree views over the Hauraki Gulf and across to the city – you can even take a segway tour to the top.

Takapuna is the unofficial ‘capital’ of Auckland’s North Shore. Choose from a huge range of cafés and restaurants day or night, or go Kiwi with fresh fish and chips on the beach.
Make sure you check out Takapuna’s whitesand beach for family-friendly swimming and an awesome playground (more picnic spots here too). Afterwards, stretch your legs on the heritage trail from Takapuna to Milford along the water’s edge.

In Birkenhead, there are sea views from every street, so climb high and reap the rewards. Sitting 360 feet above sea level, these views stretch across the Waitemata Harbour and all the way to Rangitoto Island. Closer to the water, explore the grounds around the Chelsea Sugar Refinery, part of Auckland’s Victorian history.
At the very end of the peninsula is the Shakespear Regional Park. There are some lovely walks and great views of Auckland and the Hauraki Gulf. The park has also recently become a predator-free zone with the construction of a fence along the boundary to the park. Two beaches are within the park boundary - Te Haruhi Bay and Okoromai Bay.
The Whangaparaoa Peninsula is known for its long golden beaches, stunning regional park and world-class golf course. The name Whangaparaoa is the Maori translation for Bay of Whales, as dolphins and orca whales can often be seen in the waters off the peninsula. The peninsula is more than eleven kilometres long and relatively narrow. On both the northern and southern sides are sandy beaches seperated by rocky outcrops.
A little further along is Silverdale, with its historic museum, adventure park and the cool Snowplanet (see below) with its indoor ski resort, where you can actually ski all year round!! The reason for all the steam and smell is because of the Taupo Volcanic Zone, a geothermal field that extends from White Island through to Mt Ruapehu on the south side of Taupo. It provides erupting geysers, bubbling mud pols and naturally heated mineral waters that are said to have great healing properties. Spa baths are everywhere, (including at a lot of the hotels and motels), but for the public, the Polynesian Spa and Blue Baths have family heated pools. Families love Polynesian Spa for the convenience and superb setting. Easily accessed in the centre of town, it is walking distance to most major accommodations. The family spa is a great way to enjoy Rotorua’s warm waters.

Where else can you see Rotorua’s geothermal wonders? Take a walk in Kuirau Park! Kuirau Park is a free public geothermal park and has mud pools, hot springs, free thermal foot baths and a children’s playground. - Rotorua The Eruption of Mt Tarawera
You can also visit the amazing Waimangu Volcanic Valley which is the youngest geothermal eco-system in the world with the largest hot water spring – 3.8 hectares – called Frying Pan Lakes. It was formed in the eruption of Mount Tarawera in 1886. Wai-O-Tapu - Meaning “Sacred Waters”, this is one of the world’s most natural theme parks. Sitting just 30kms from Rotorua, prepare to be amazed by sights such as the Champagne Pool. The highlight of any visit to Wai-O-Tapu is the Lady Knox Geyser.
Destructive, hurricane force winds developed as the eruption columns sucked in air from the surrounding countryside. Violent electrical storms above the eruption columns blasted into the night sky, with water vapours poured out by the eruption causing torrential rains. The final length of the craters was a massive 16-km long. For the surviving local Maori, the eruption was devastating.
Bay of Plenty
Orakei Korako is a stunning geothermal park which can only be reached by boat. Colorful silica terraces are a camera’s delight, and the ‘Hidden Valley’ is like something from a film. It’s the largest geyser field in NZ, filled with hot spouts of water, colourful mineral pools and rich, dense forests and glades.
In the early hours of the morning of June 10 1886, the Tarawera range was erupting. At 12:30am the first earthquakes were felt. People throughout the area were jolted awake as earthquakes became increasingly powerful. By 2.30am its three peaks were erupting, with columns reaching thousands of metres into the sky.

Downtown Wellington is ideally explored on foot. It is made up of four quarters, each with their own distinct mix of shopping, cafes, transport, accommodation. Wellington’s intense urban experience is unrivalled in the country. Shops, museums, restaurants, parks, galleries, harbours, even beaches – the picturesque waterfront area, in particular, is a hot-spot for those who like everything in one place. The area is also home to the National Museum of New Zealand, the Te Papa Tongarewa, which also hosts the national gallery. The Museum is an entertaining way to find out about New Zealand, and is arguably one of the best interactive museums in the world. Kids will love the interactive exhibitions.

What’s special about the Hutt Valley, is the unique variety of terrain over such a small area. Seaside towns, wilderness, flood plains, valleys, forests, industrial and commercial centres, and residential suburbs, all within a short hop of each other. One of the big attractions is the proximity of many walks and bike trails straight out of the city and up into the bushy hills or along the Hutt River, so it’s a popular day trip destination. Other attractions include the Maidstone Max bike trail and the H20 Xtreme Aquatic Centre, which contains hydroslides, swimming pools, a wave machine and a simulated beach. Northwest of Wellington there’s a life that’s a world away from city living on the Kapiti Coast. Kapiti Island Nature Reserve is one of the more accessible nature reserves in New Zealand.
