Hobart Hobart is Australia’s most southerly capital and is one of the most picturesque cities in the world. Few cities can boast a mountainous backdrop, harbour on the front doorstep and some of the world’s cleanest air. Hobart is Tasmania’s liveable, dynamic capital and also Australia’s second oldest city. The imposing Mt. Wellington stands guard over the city which is hemmed in on all sides by the mountains and the mighty Derwent River. The city has a distinct nautical feel and the dominance of the sandstone buildings give it a real olde worlde charm.

Out & About

DID YOU KNOW On the last Sunday of every month, at the Tasmanian Museum, they run TMAG Family Days, which run alongside their current collections, with all kinds of fun activities aimed just at families. Check out their website for further information.

Mt Wellington, or simply “the mountain” as it’s called by locals, looms over Hobart at 1271 metres tall. It is a great place to visit for outstanding views over Hobart and Southern Tasmania. In winter, it is often snow capped, so it is also a good chance to play in the snow with the kids.

Explore Salamanca Place, a short walk from the waterfront, with its galleries, theatres, craft shops and restaurants located in1830s Georgian warehouses and on Saturdays enjoy the food and entertainment of Salamanca Market, Australia’s best outdoor market.

As you walk along Constitution Dock amongst the fishing boats you get the feel that you could be anywhere on the Mediterranean. The aquatic nature of Hobart means you will find lots of yachts and dinghys dotting all the coves and little bays of the city which are normally accompanied by grassy parks or playgrounds that provide a picture-perfect picnic spot.

Battery Point is a suburb of Hobart immediately south of the central business district. From Salamanca Place, climb the colonial era Kelly’s Steps and wander up through the lanes and quaint streets which are, filled with stories of Hobart’s historic past. Take a wander to Arthur’s Circus, the village green for which the suburb is built around. Near two centuries on, there are plenty of Battery Point stops to enjoy. There’s a famed bakery, traditional pubs and cafes bustling with locals chatting over morning coffee.

Whoever said “You don’t get something for nothing” was WRONG!! Let us show you how to spend a day or even a week in and around Hobart, where you can see and do lots ... and spend nothing! (Or just a little). So, round up a posse and get out there and do it!!

35 Things to do on the cheap!! 1. Take the drive up to Mt. Wellington (25 mins), One of the world’s truly great views. There is an indoor observatory. You may even see snow up there and build a snowman! There are not many places that have such a tall mountain overlooking their CBD like this! You can see almost 100km on a clear day. 2. Walk down through Salamanca Place to get a feel for the “Old Hobart” – Go on a Saturday morning and experience the “New Hobart” as the whole area comes to life with the world famous Market. It’s an outdoor street market held every Saturday between 8.30am and 3pm. More than 300 stalls selling jewellery, ceramics, food and drinks set up shop along the waterfront. Watch boats bobbing on the water, hear some live music and let the kids run wild on the grass. 3. Go shopping and explore the laneways and hidden secrets of Hobart’s CBD. 4. Go for a walk through the historic Battery Point area. Check out the quaint shops and tiny cottages.

Join one of the many walking tours (costs a little) that tell the story of early Hobart Town. The Visitor Information Centre will give you the details. 7. Explore the Constitution Dock area. Follow the trail of the interpretive plaques. Look for the statues. While you are down there you may see the bridge turn and let the fishing boats out into the river – now that’s precision! 8. The Maritime Museum (costs a little) across the road from the Tasmanian Museum tells of Hobart’s early seafaring history.

- Richmond Photo courtesy of Tourism Tasmania

Just 25 minutes from Hobart is one of Tasmania’s most popular destinations. A leisurely stroll through Richmond will reveal a Georgian town lost in time. This is a wonderful town to explore to learn about Tasmania’s past, while enjoying visits to galleries, museums, cafes and historical landmarks. Visit the Old Richmond Goal (p.13) to get a feel for those days as a penal colony. It is the oldest gaol in Australia and gives glaring insight into the difficulty of convict life in the 19th century.

Richmond houses Australia’s oldest bridge still in use. Built in 1823, it is a great photo op with grassy banks for picnicking and a local duck population.

It’s open for self-guided tours daily, and as you explore the cells you can learn about the stories of some of the notorious inmates.

The Old Hobart Town Model Village is a perfect setting to learn about the life of early settlers in Hobart. It is located in the heart of Richmond and visitors can walk through a miniature replica of Hobart as it was in the 1820s. Be sure to sample the local chocolates and old fashioned sweets as you stroll down the colonial main street.

Just up the road from the bridge is St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Churh. Built in 1836 it is considered to be Australia’s oldest still-functioning, original church in Australia.

Located about 6 kilometres from Richmond, Zoodoo is a hands-on safari and native animal park, spread over 90 hectares.

Nearby the Coal Valley Wineries, Wicked Cheese and Coal River Farm give you a taste of the local produce.

Here you can see one of Tasmania’s largest collections of native, agricultural and exotic animals, including two rare white lions.

Eat Food, glorious food!!! Hobart has lots to offer families looking for a quick bite to eat or a sit down meal. At Constitution Dock the seafood is fresh and cheap. For lunch or dinner, the “fish punts offer plenty of choice, or take a seat at Fish Frenzy (see below), where kids are welcome. In the CBD, the Shamrock Hotel, has a laid back and friendly atmosphere, with a roaring open fire, and wholesome food at family friendly prices. The Ocean Child in Argyle St fits a similar mould. In West Hobart, Paesano Pizza & Pasta (see above) is awesome. They cook just like Nonna used to! Up in Elizabeth St, North Hobart overlooking the city (a bit too far to walk), there are restaurants, cafes and bakeries aplenty, with cuisines from just about every country on the planet.

Among them is Mee Wah Chinese Restaurant. This place is not for those on a budget, but the service and the quality of food is as good as it gets. Also try the German Bakerei traditional pastry products.

Out & About

- Bruny Island

Bruny Island is Tasmania’s premier island destination with a holiday adventure to suit everyone.

It is made up of a North and South Island which are separated by a narrow isthmus called “The Neck”. Access to the island is by vehicular ferry departing from Kettering. The trip takes 15 minutes and arrives at Roberts Point on North Bruny. “The Neck” has a timber stepped boardwalk that gives you some of the most spectacular 360° panoramic views of the Bruny Island coastline. There is also a penguin rookery located here.

Bruny’s coastal scenery is magical. There are countless swimming and surf beaches, plus good sea and freshwater fishing. South Bruny offers the steep, forested South Bruny National Park, which has some excellent walking tracks, especially around Labillardiere Peninsula and Fluted Cape. There are towering cliffs overlooking long sandy beaches, coastal heathland, underwater gardens of kelp seaweed and some amazing bushwalks to take it all in. You can also join an eco-cruise exploring the stunning coastline of the island. Visit the Cape Bruny Lighthouse, first lit in 1838. Today it’s Australia’s second oldest and longest continually staffed lighthouse. There are plenty of places to stay with accommodation ranging from friendly campsites to luxury beachfront retreats. Our favourite is Captain Cook Holiday Park (See below).

Bruny Island

They return to their burrows in the sand dunes at dusk. The Reserve has an interpretation board. White wallabies, fur seals, pademelons, echidnas and endemic bird species also call Bruny “home”.

HANDY HINT

South Bruny has two general stores – at Adventure Bay and Alonnah – Adventure Bay has petrol and an ATM and is home to Hotel Bruny - Australia’s southern-most pub.

Huon Valley -

Out & About

Head south of Hobart and in just 20 minutes you’ll find yourself in a region where green hillsides, boutique vineyards and roadside cherry stalls dot the landscape - The Huon! With its strong maritime links, you’ll also find rugged coastlines along the D’Entrecasteaux Channel, smooth-flowing rivers and World Heritage Wilderness. The whole region is ideal for a road trip, with many captivating sights, towns, restaurants and orchards along the way. Cygnet is the artistic centre of the Huon Valley and is home to many skilled artisans and crafts people. At Franklin, visit the fascinating Wooden Boat Centre and Boat Building School where shipwrights impart traditional skills to students from around the world. As you head further south, the stretch between Franklin and Port Huon is one of the best you’ll find in Tasmania. If the weather is calm, the reflections in the Huon River are unsurpassed. As the establishment is a working seahorse farm, you will go behind the scenes and witness the seahorse in their enclosures in all stages of their life. Penguin Penguin is a beachside township divided from the hinterlands by the mountainous southern forests of the Dial Range.

Out & About

Leven Canyon Take the magnificent journey through the Leven Valley to the Leven Canyon nature reserve, only 45 minutes drive from Ulverstone’s tranquil beaches and coastal parklands. The 2,500ha Leven Canyon Reserve forms part of the Penguin to Cradle Trail, one of Tasmania’s Eight Great Walks. Come to the edge of a dramatic canyon with the Leven River twisting and roaring 275 metres below... and hear nature’s wild call!

The charming seaside town was named after the occupants of the penguin rookeries in the area. Penguin’s attractions range from beautiful parks, gardens and markets through to mountain ranges and reserves and feature what is believed to be the largest penguin in the world. This 3m giant statue of a fairy penguin sits on the esplanade, while the real things return to local rookeries at dusk, especially between November and March. Penguins latest attraction is the Penguin Book Exchange, right on the foreshore close to the Big Penguin. The Book Exchange is modelled after Dr Who’s Tardis and encourages passers by to “take a book, read a book, leave a book”. Penguin Mountain Bike Park caters for all ages from the Little Devils Skill Park, ideal for skill building, including berms, pump track and beginner wall ride, to the more advanced Free Ride Jumps Park for multiple skill level jump lines and features including a whale tail, wall ride and container jump.

Easy day walks include Cruickshanks Lookout, Forest Stairs, Edge Lookout Track, Fern Walk and the Canyon Floor Walk is for the more adventurous. Discover stories and information revealing the significance of the canyon and surrounds and enjoy picnic area with barbecues, tables, picnic shelter and toilets. The nearby Gunns Plains Caves (see opposite) are not to be missed with some of the largest limestone formations in the southern hemisphere. The caves are well lit and concrete paths ensure easy access for the young and not-so-young.

Out & About

- West Coast

The West Coast is one of Tasmania’s most popular travel destinations with everything that you require for the perfect family holiday. Beaches, mountains, lakes, rivers, waterfalls, history, tours and adventure. The area has it all! Queenstown, with its distinct cratered moonscape was the hub of the Tasmanian mining boom of the early 1900’s. When in town, check out the Galley Museum or do an underground mine tour. The nearby Spion Kopf lookout is an 8 min walk and gives great views over town and the infamous gravel football oval!

The Ship That Never Was is Tasmania’s longest running play that tells the dramatic and hilarious tale of the last Great Escape from Sarah Island Prison. It offers fun-filled family entertainment performed daily (September to May) at 5.30pm at the Strahan Amphitheatre. Iconic!

Strahan is a sleepy fishing village full of stories from the days of convicts and pioneers. Originally a port town playing a key part in developing the mining settlements in the area, Strahan was also vital to the timber industry. Whilst in town, you have to take a tour up the magnificent Gordon River and on the harbour with Gordon River Cruises. West Strahan beach is a great picnic spot with safe beach, playground and amenities.

Zeehan and Roseberry are historic mining towns also worth a visit. Zeehan has one of the oldest histories in Tasmania and was once Tasmania’s third-largest town! Surrounded by mountains and button grass plains, you can stand at one end of the main street and not see the other end.The two-mile long strip was filled with businesses and pubs (many pubs).Today, the grand Gaiety Theatre, Post Office and Heritage Centre still imposes themselves on the streetscape. With the highest postcode in Australia, Rosebery is also claim to the steepest golf course in Australia. Nearby, Mount Read has Tasmania’s highest rainfall. Mining continues to this day.
