Sydney City -

Out & About Photo Courtesy of Destination NSW

Sydney is the capital of New South Wales and is Australia's oldest and largest city with a population of around 4 million. So much of Sydney is set up for the outdoor lifestyle, especially with all the gardens, parks, harbour and beaches being so close to the CBD! From the city to the beach and the harbour, to the nearby hills or just at the local park, there is plenty of open space to run, play, swim, boat or picnic! The city is divided into North and South by the Sydney Harbour, with both The Sydney Harbour Bridge and Tunnel connecting them. Most of the tourist attractions are in the South part of the city, with a large business and residential area in the North. Situated right on old Sydney Cove, Circular Quay is the original foundation site for the city of Sydney and one of the most active hubs with both ferries and trains boarding and dropping off passengers around the clock. Many would regard it as the gateway to Sydney with its promenade leading you around to the Sydney Opera House in one direction, and the Sydney Harbour Bridge in the other.

The CBD and Harbour were the original area settled when Arthur Phillip established an English penal colony in the “Rocks” in 1788. The rough countryside resulted in a confusing collection of streets and laneways, rather than a neat grid of roads and avenues. It is one of Sydney’s oldest precincts. When you walk the cobblestone streets you get a sense of Sydney’s past and pop into the Rocks Discovery Museum and learn more about the history of the area.

DID YOU KNOW Located in The Rocks, the Observatory Hill is a gorgeous spot for a picnic with a view, as well as being home to the Sydney Observatory, a heritage-listed museum and public observatory.

Out & About

- Sydney City While in the city travel to the top of Sydney Tower, the tallest structure in Australia, and see amazing 360° views of Sydney.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge, often referred to as the Coat Hanger, is one of the iconic sites of Sydney alongside the Sydney Opera House. This steel arch bridge is accessible by train or car, but of course a walk across it, or over it, is the most exciting. Families will love the climb up the Sydney Harbour Pylon or you could try the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb if your kids are 8 years or older.

Take a walk down Macquarie Street to see the Hyde Park Barracks, The Sydney Mint Museum, New South Wales Parliament House and The State Library. At the end there you will find the extensive grounds of the Royal Botanic Gardens with its unbeatable views of the Harbour from Mrs Macquarie’s Chair.

Sydney is still a great mix of old and new just waiting for you, with each “village” having its own distinct character. Check out inner suburbs like Paddington, Glebe, Surry Hills, Woolloomooloo and Newtown to get a feel for the gritty working-class existence of early 1900 Sydney living. Some of Sydney’s best beaches are within a 10km radius from the city centre. Explore the popular beaches of Bondi and Manly, go further afield to Sydney’s Northern Beaches, or discover some hidden gems inside Sydney Harbour. From organised activities and events, to being active, to watching exciting sports action, to finding a new place to visit, Sydney is there for you and your family to go out and explore. So, get off the couch, ring a friend, grab the kids, take advantage of our vouchers and offers in the book and online, sign up for our e newsletter, download the app to “stay in the know” .... and just get out there and DO IT!

The roads leading to the Northern Beaches are noticeably clogged most weekend mornings with those eager to explore everything that Manly has to offer. With good reason. It’s just a fantastic spot. Manly has a laid back, casual, friendly atmosphere that welcomes everyone. There is always plenty to see and do in Manly, no matter what your interests are. The streets mimic the lanes of Brighton, which lead from the city centre to the sea. It is famous for its promenade of pine trees, which were first planted by the early English settlers. The pine trees could then be cut down and used to build ships and masts if settlers decided they wanted to sail home. Manly’s North Head nature walk passes by natural bush, aboriginal landmarks and wildlife. The entire city of Sydney can be seen at the top of the trail!

DID YOU KNOW

Ever wonder where Manly got its name from? Governor Arthur Phillip, who discovered Manly in 1778, saw the local Indigenous people as he entered the harbour and described them as strong and manly.

Parramatta -

Out & About

A delightful way to travel to Parramatta is by ferry from Circular Quay, gliding under the Sydney Harbour Bridge and along pretty Parramatta River past Sydney Olympic Park to Parramatta Wharf. The scenic trip is about 85 minutes. By train from Central Station the journey is about 25 minutes. There are heaps of reasons to visit Parramatta, it’s got so much to see and do and it’s compact. So if you are a Sydneysider looking for an interesting – and easy – staycation or a simple day trip, then read on. Parramatta is a city which is easy to explore with many of the best highlights within walking distance. You can hop on the free city shuttle that runs every 10 minutes, every day to travel around the city and get your bearings.

The second oldest city in Australia, Parramatta was founded in 1788 - the same year as Sydney. Walk up Church Street to discover its vibrant, multicultural food scene, or walk along the river to discover the city's rich history.

Parramatta is home to some major historic sites, including the Old Government House, built in 1799, Experiment Farm cottage, the site of the first land grant, and the rustic Hambledon Cottage on the Elizabeth Farm Estate. Elizabeth Farm runs year-round family tours and programs to engage kids in the history of the property and introduce them to what life was like during the early 19th century. Kids will get a kick out of trying to do the laundry in a tub, throwing quoits or doing some craft. Lovely riverbank picnic spots are dotted along Parramatta River, which winds past Old Government House in Parramatta Park.

DID YOU KNOW Parramatta hosts some terrific annual events including the Parramatta Winterlight festival (held in the June/July school holidays), the Spot On Children's Festival in September.

From the road you can barely see this playground, so beautifully does it blend with its bushy surroundings. Generally speaking, Parramatta Park does not ever have an overcrowded feel to it. Its broad expanses of grass and gum trees can accommodate a huge number of visitors!

DID YOU KNOW

Parramatta is an aboriginal word that actually means "Place where eels lie down". Thus the Rugby League team's name!

For a touch of wilderness in the city, Lake Parramatta Reserve has beautiful bushland teeming with native species. Hike one of the three bush-walking trails, bring bikes for an off-road adventure and be sure to check out the dam. In summer the lake is patrolled by lifeguards and a swimmers delight, also popular with for-hire stand-up paddle boards, kayaks and paddle boats. Bring a picnic, spark up a BBQ or grab a cheeky snack at the café. Parramatta has plenty of activities that will suit families, there’s history, nature, sports all that is missing is you!

Watch a movie under the stars at Sydney’s last remaining drive-in movie theatre, Skyline Drive Ins (see opposite). Introduce kids to the movie experience of a bygone era complete with a Happy Days-style diner, spiders and choc-tops.

Heading up in to The Blue Mountains, as the temperature drops a few degrees, the air takes on a freshness as you move up out of the Sydney basin. The Blue Mountains are part of the Great Dividing Range, which stretches from the Gippsland region of Victoria in the south to the tropical rainforests of north Queensland. They are clad in vast forests of eucalypts (commonly called gum trees), which in the hot sun discharge a fine mist of eucalyptus oil from their leaves. The mist refracts light, which makes the haze look blue at a distance – hence the name.

Kids of all ages love to play. Sydney has some great parks and gardens where the whole family can walk, run, swim, climb, ride or picnic, get up close and personal with animals or just sit still and watch the world go by. There are so many local parks and beach areas nearby, as well as having a number of National Parks, top notch nature reserves and state of the art playgrounds right on our doorstep. Below you will find a selection of our favourites.

PARKS Royal National Park

Located in the Sutherland Shire, 29kms from the CBD, it was established in 1879, and is the world’s first National Park. It has picnic and camping areas, surf beaches, walking tracks, swimming holes and water sports. You can also catch a ferry across to Cronulla.

Pimlea Picnic Grounds

Natural playground, flying fox, climbing walls, water play area, tyre swings, BBQ’s and plenty of space to move.

Georges River National Park

A river habitat for native animals with picnic areas, walking tracks and great views.

Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park

25kms from the city, but you would think you are miles away. Native bushland, gorges, rivers, picnic spots and Indigenous rock engravings. Photo Courtesy of Destination NSW

Warriewood Wetlands

50 50

The Wetlands are a very special kind of environment, the water providing the ideal conditions for lots of birds, very special species of plants and of course amphibies and reptiles as well. More than 80 species of birds alone have been recorded here. The access to the Warriewood Wetlands is easy these days thanks to a 2.4km long boardwalk which together with the surrounding streets of the neighbourhood connects to a full loop. There’s also an enclosed playground and BBQ facilities.

The Hunts Creek Reserve is a designated “Wildlife Sanctuary” located in north western Sydney between the suburbs of Carlingford and North Rocks. The bushwalk in the reserve is an easy one and can be enjoyed by the whole family. It has many shady spots, and being a wildlife sanctuary, you would also be able to spot many interesting birds including kookaburras and the colourful and fast-moving wrens. The best (and surprising) discovery on this walk is that you can also view a very beautiful waterfall along the journey!

Centennial Park

The largest of the three parks that make up Centennial Parklands, Centennial Park is one of Australia’s most famous parks, and a haven for inner city families to ride bikes, horses (there are several horse riding stables located in the park as well as pony rides on weekends), picnic, play and explore. The park features ponds with ducks, formal gardens, statues, playgrounds and picnic areas.

Play PLAYGROUNDS Fairfield Adventure Park - Fairfield

Have a look at the slides, long winding tunnels that seem to go in all directions, guaranteed to confuse you and give your kids a really good time. Just getting up to the start of the slides will be an adventure and real challenge for some kids.

Pirrama Park Playground - Pyrmont

This beautiful playground in Pyrmont has shiny, well-designed equipment, a water play area, sand pit with shade cloth, new, well-maintained bathrooms (including baby change facilities) and a cafe with shaded seating. Street parking is available. Pirrama Park features grasslands, wide avenues for scooting and entry into the harbour for swimming.

Ian Potter Children's Wild Play Garden

The brand new Ian Potter Children’s Wild Play Garden opened in Centennial Park in October 2017. The 6500sq m nature-based play area features a 7m-high climbing tower, wooden bridge, water play area and an open play area where kids are encouraged to use sticks and natural materials to make their own shelters, artworks and games.

Halvorsen Park - Ermington

Ahoy there! Halvorsen Park houses a fantastic nautical-themed playground with rope towers, a sandstone boat and several nature-based play elements for both kids and adults who want to get in touch with their inner child. While this park doesn’t provide BBQ facilities, it is not short of shaded grassy areas for those willing to pack their own picnic basket to satisfy any post-play hunger pangs.

Blaxland Riverside Park - Blaxland

A gorgeous spot for families with one of the biggest playgrounds in Sydney set among three hectares of rolling hills and big open spaces. The playground caters for kids of all ages and abilities with a fantastic water play area. There’s a double flying fox, mega-swing, tunnel slides, scramble wall, spinning play disk, Viking swing and a multi-level tree house to be discovered and enjoyed.

Newington Armory - Sydney Olympic Park The area has heritage train rides, a clue trail (a la the Amazing Race), music and arts workshops and school holiday activities.
