Time New Zealand is one of the first places in the world to see the new day, 12 hours ahead of GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). In Summer, New Zealand uses ‘Daylight Saving’, with clocks put forward one hour to GMT +13. Daylight saving begins on the last Sunday in September and ends on the first Sunday of the following April, when clocks are put back to GMT+12.

Weather New Zealand has a temperate climate with moderately high rainfall and many hours of sunshine. While the far north has subtropical weather during summer, and inland alpine areas of the South Island can be as cold as -10°C (14°F) in winter, most of the country lies close to the coast, which means mild temperatures. The average New Zealand temperature decreases as you travel south. January and February are the warmest months, and July is the coldest month of the year. In summer, the average maximum temperature ranges between 20-30ºC (70-90°F) and in winter between 10-15ºC (50-60°F).

Auckland Nearby is Viaduct Harbour. Built for the hosting of the America’s Cup, this area is now home to museums, bars, restaurants, walking and cycling paths, plenty of maritime history (including a giant yacht suspended above the entranceway) as well as kid’s playgrounds and accommodation.

A short bus ride away is the popular family area of Mission Bay. Here, The Promenade, is one of Auckland’s original beachside hangouts, and these days has cafes, restaurants, fish and chip shops, ice cream parlours, FREE wifi in the area, an iconic fountain and new kids playground. Oh – we forgot to mention a safe swimming beach and watersports such as kayaking and paddleboards which you can rent. It has great views of the city and nearby islands.

Auckland is set on three beautiful harbours and the landscape is dotted with 48 extinct volcanoes. Rangitoto is the stand out with its distincitve symmetrical cone and super location just off the coast. It stands guard over Auckland and the views are spectacular! After a short ferry ride, you can take a guided tour on the 4WD road train or you can walk the 2 hour round trip to the summit. The views from the top are awesome.

Worth A Look

Walk to the summit of Rangitoto, the black lava volcanic island in the middle of the inner Hauraki Gulf. Hire a kayak and join an evening paddle to the island. To the east of the city, there are beautiful islands perfect for day trips or weekend getaways. Waiheke, is the best known and is only a 35 minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland. Waiheke is packed full of vineyards, walking tracks and beautiful beaches. There is zip lining, sea kayaking, horse riding, golf and stunning beaches like Onetangi and Oneroa to just kick back and relax. Bus shuttles and taxis take you all over the island. 1. Spend $1 to board the red coloured “City Link” public bus that will take you to all the main points of the CBD so you can get your bearings. 2. Take a walk through the Wynyard Quarter. Check out the boats, the statues (and they have an awesome playground).

3. The city hosts markets at Britomart and “K” Rd on Saturdays. Browse for a bargain or grab something fresh and tasty for lunch. 4. Go to the races at Avondale or Ellerslie racecourses. It’s FREE. 5. Go for a stroll down Ponsonby’s main street and check out the wide selection of hip restaurants and boutiques.

6. Auckland War Memorial Museum is free for Aucklanders and tells the tale of Auckland’s history and cultural heritage. Open daily with cultural performances including a welcome dance, poi dance, stick game, weaponry display and haka (some cost – www.aucklandmuseum.com) 7. Take a walk through the Auckland Domain and check out the Duck Ponds and vast open spaces. This was Auckland’s first water supply.

8. Grab a picnic and head to Cornwall Park (p.16) – It is a working farm with grazing sheep and cattle in the parkland. You wouldn’t think you were 15mins from the CBD! 9. Stroll the maritime village of Devonport and check out the quaint shops and cottages. There is also a small maritime museum. 10. Head to the Auckland Art Gallery (p.9) where the daily tours are free and they always have other activities and exhibitions to interest kids and families.

- Auckland 19. Take a trip out to the Botanic Gardens in Manurewa. Programmes and tours run regularly www.aucklandbotanicgardens.co.nz 20. Take a trip on the Fullers Ferry over to Devonport, where the kids will revel in the chance for a play on the beach and an ice-cream. There’s also a great little chocolate factory there too – well worth a visit. From Devonport, walk to the summits of Mount Victoria or North Head for 360° views. Ferries to and from Devonport depart every half hour. 22. Head down to the Ferry Terminal on Quay St opposite Princes Wharf and watch the ferries come and go. Better still go for a ride on one (costs a little). 23.Mount Hobson and Mount St John are dormant volcanic cones offering commanding views of the city - pack a picnic and walk up. 24. Walk up to the Sky Tower and watch the daredevils try the “Sky Walk”.

15. Check out the Wot’s On (p.31) and find out what is happening this week in the “City of Sails”. Auckland has some great events and most are free! 16. Manakau Heads Lighthouse at the tip of Awhitu Peninsula is FREE to enter and climb (Donation appreciated). 17. View the huge gannet colony at Muriwai Beach. Over 2000 birds reside here. Viewing platforms allow you to get up close & personal. 18. Explore some waterfalls in the nearby Waitakere Ranges. Take a picnic.

11. Go for a drive along the beach road from Downtown Auckland to St Helliers through Mission Bay. You’ll pass lots of playgrounds, mini golf courses, beaches, kayak and bike hire places. It’s great for people watching as well. 12. Climb to the top of Mt Eden, the highest point in Auckland. Take a look at the 50m deep crater. The views are super! 14. Go rollerblading, skateboarding or for a ride along the edge of the harbour down around the Mission Bay area. You won’t be alone as it’s a very popular area for these activities.

Eat So, we’ve done a bit of legwork (and tasting) and hopefully come up with some suggestions that may keep the young’uns occupied and happy long enough for you to enjoy yourself too! AUCKLAND CBD - Baduzzi - North Wharf, Wynyard Quarter. This Italian restaurant gets top marks for creativity when catering for littlies. Check out their Scooter Sundays, a weekly scooter obstacle course down Fish Lane. They also have a fantastic kids’ menu. Seafood Central Courtyard - North Wharf. Live music and entertainment every Saturday and Sunday. Undercover but outside so the kids can roam and make noise, free kids meal with every adult meal, sand pit and often a bouncy castle. NORTH - Fernielea Café in Coatesville has great service, kid friendly menu and a super outdoor playground. Oh – the food is pretty good too! The Library Café -. Onehunga. This cafe has a bouncy castle and trampoline, so it might pay to let the kids burn off a bit of energy before they tuck into their meal. SOUTH - Circus Circus in Mt Eden will keep the kids fascinated and amused. Winner of the best family restaurant awards for 3 years running. It is a breakfast, lunch and dinner option. 477 Mt Eden Road.

The Parenting Place Café - 300 Great South Road, Greenlane. Kids play area, lots of toys, change tables, couches, beanbags. EAST - Iguacu in the heart of Parnell. Their children’s menu is not a three option kiddy meal offering, but a book of healthy options for kids to build their own meals.

Eating with kids? Mmmm … Not always the most enjoyable experience!

WEST - Catroux - 129 West End Rd, Westmere. These guys have their very own sandpit, toys and a chalkboard out the back. The kids’ menu has peanut butter and jelly bagels, boiled egg and soldiers and kid-sized plates of scrambled eggs and bacon or French toast. Hallertau - This brewbar and restaurant is well-equipped for kids, who can entertain themselves on the gated outdoor jungle gym. They also have high chairs and toys by the tables, and offer kid-sized portions on meals.

Play/Party Play/Party Kids of all ages love to play! Auckland has plenty of parks and gardens where the whole family can enjoy the sensational temperature climate.

The whole city has wide open spaces for walking, jogging, cycling, horse riding, picnicking, barbecuing, playing, bird watching, playing with the footy, flying a kite, doing some fishing or getting up close and personal with animals or even sitting still and watching the world go by. Auckland’s temperate weather means you can spend lots of time enjoying the great outdoors. Here is a selection of our favourites:

Cornwall Park – Greenlane

Located close to the city with grazing animals. There is a large playground, flying fox, plenty of space and a cafe to replenish the energy levels. The Stardome Observatory & Planetarium are located here too.They run regular family events during school holiday periods, so check their website or letsgokids.co.nz for regular updates.

Auckland Rainforest

Auckland is one of the only places outside the tropics where rainforest exists.The rainforest of the Waitakere Ranges is an ecological masterpiece situated only 24 km west of the CBD. It has 250 km of walking trails that take you through native tress to streams, waterfalls and rugged beaches. Some of the trees are 600 years old!

Auckland Domain

The Domain is Auckland’s oldest park and has plenty of open space and greenery. It is home to the War Memorial Museum. It has duck ponds, natural springs, and large trees which make it a great spot for a family picnic close to the CBD.

Western Springs

This park has been an Auckland family favourite for years. Feed the ducks, ride your bike around the lakes or play on the great playground. Close to Auckland Zoo too.

Ambury is located in Mangere Bridge. It is a working farm, an important education centre and a birdwatcher’s paradise with an interesting volcanic history - all just 15kms from downtown Auckland.The farm animals at Ambury are family favourites.You will see sheep, goats, cows, pigs, pet lambs (in spring), chickens, turkeys, rabbits, peacocks and a horse.

Olympic Park – New Lynn

17 minutes from the CBD, it has lots of open space, walking trails, sculptures, streams, rope climbing frames, traditional swings and a large sandpit.

Owairaka Park – Mt Albert

This is a new park that is well frequented. It has a skate park, volleyball court, bike track, flying fox, some climbing walls as well as traditional playground equipment. Definitely a new age park!

Heron Park – Avondale Spacenet, flying fox, swings, slides all on soft fall rubber – Great fun!

EAST Barry Curtis Wetland Playground – Flatbush Botanic Gardens – Manurewa

The Gardens are located in Manurewa and feature plants from New Zealand and abroad.There are free guided tours, and on weekends you can take an inexpensive train ride around the Gardens. There is also a dedicated children’s garden and the Agent Ani Adventure Trail. Duck food is available for 20 cents to feed the resident duck families down by the lake.They also run regular workshops and exhibits for children during school holiday periods. Play/Party NORTH Schnapper Rock – Albany

The best thing about this is the water play equipment. Children get to use a hand pump to activate the water sequence down the manmade creek bed. Something different!

Northboro Park - Belmont. The North Shore’s newest playground has a spacenet, swings and flying fox.

Schnapper Rock – Albany. Waterplay installation including a large spiral hand-pump, 7.5 metre tall spacenet, rope bridge and fast slide.

SOUTH One Tree Hill Domain – Epsom. Auckland’s best flying fox is at the One Tree Hill domain. This playground has a mixture of older equipment and some newer features including a Roctopus swing that sits four children on rubber tyres and spins around, as well as a rope climbing structure. This playground like some of the others has a liberty swing for children in wheelchairs.

Omana Regional Park – Papatoetoe

CBD Wynyard Quarter

Down by the wharf area, this new playground is themed around the sea and it will capture the kids imagination. It’s close by to cafes too, so you can grab that latte whilst the kids play.

Maori themed playground worthy of a day trip. Monkey bars in the shape of a taniwha. There is also a neighbouring petting farm. During spring there are lamb feeding sessions at noon and 4pm.

Play/Party Beaches – Aaah – This is what I’m talkin’ about bro!!

Auckland and the North Island have some of the most pristine, white (and black) sand ocean strips anywhere in the world. The entire City of Auckland is surrounded by beaches, and add to that the nearby islands, and you have plenty of choice to frolic down by the sea. (The water can be a bit chilly though!).

Cornwallis Beach

In the same area as Piha, Cornwallis is a safe swimming spot for families. Great picnic spot.

Whakanewha Bay

Offers picnic areas and safe, shallow swimming.

Kelvin Strand Beach

Almost at the tip of the Te Atatu Peninsula is one hidden treasure.The beach is a real gem - lovely white sand, regenerating wetlands, a large grassy park and playground. This beach is best visited at high tide, although at low tide it’s possible to walk to a sand bar about 100m off the beach. A good alternative is to bring bikes and ride along the relatively new Harbourview Walkway.

Mission Bay

Close to the CBD and with the convenience of shops, cafes and restaurants nearby. This is perfect when the kids just have to get their feet wet!

Sit and watch the ferries roll in, the people get off, the people get on, the ferry depart. Press repeat! – Oh, have a swim and grab an icecream too!

Piha Beach

This is one of Auckland’s famous BLACK sand beaches. Located in the Waitakere Ranges, it is a popular swimming beach. The scenery is awesome.

Takapuna

A long wide beach that is bordered by grassy areas with all the amenities. Go for a walk, have a game of cricket or touch - this has room for everyone. Parking is a bit scarce.

It is New Zealand’s largest inland city, situated on the banks of the Waikato River, the country’s longest river at 425km. The city of Hamilton itself is flat and easily accessible on foot. Waitomo Otorohanga is located at the southern edges of the picturesque Waikato region and is the gateway to the Waitomo area.

The town is home to the famous Otorohanga Kiwi House & Native Bird Park where you can view the furry little critters up close in a natural environment. There are other native birds and reptiles to view as well.

Otorohanga is also known as “Kiwiana Town” - a celebration of all things, “Truly New Zealand”. There are 24 Kiwiana display models in the main shopping area - 14 of which are located in the Ed Hillary Walkway. Call into the I-Site for more info, pick up a checklist and go hunting to see what you can discover. Fifteen minutes from Otorohunga is the area of Waitomo, which is a Maori word made up of two parts. ‘Wai’ which translates as water and ‘tomo’ which means enterance or hole.

Waitomo can be translated as the ‘stream which flows into the hole in the ground’. This meaning is reflected through its fantastic geological history and landscape, however it also has a rich tourism and cultural history. As a region it is one of New Zealand’s original tourist destinations. Today the caves continue to be developed to offer something for everyone, with several tourism operators in the area. At one end of the spectrum, visitors can take a 45-minute guided walk to marvel at the formations and glowworms lighting the way. At the other end, they can opt for an adrenalincharged adventure caving experience lasting for either a few hours or a whole day, including black water rafting (tubing), abseiling, waterfall jumping and zip lining.

Experience subterranean streams and amazing limestone formations as the guides explain how Mother Nature created this underground playground. Waihi Beach is a popular destination with holiday makers, thanks to 9kms of sandy white beach and quiet lifestyle. The township itself has a number of accommodation options, the best being The Top 10 Holiday Park – it’s awesome for families! There’s a daily bus service between Tauranga and Waihi Beach. The main street includes cafes and takeaways. From the northern end of Waihi Beach you can access the beautiful Orokawa Walkway. This 8km walkway offers fantastic views and winds along the coastline to Orokawa Bay and further up to Homunga Bay, which are both secluded beaches that are great spots for a picnic.

Katikati is known as ‘mural town’. It is a small settlement unlike any other. It gets its name from the 47 murals and sculptures that you can see along the main street, turning this quiet little town into a permanent open air art gallery! Visit KatiKati Bird Gardens (see opposite) for a fun, relaxing day out that the whole family will love. Enjoy lunch on the café terrace while the children hand-feed the friendly ducks and peacocks.

Out & About - Mt Maunganui & Tauranga Tauranga is the main centre of the Bay of Plenty region and is one of the fastest growing cities in the country. Located at the enterance to one of the largest natural harbours in New Zealand and situated beside the magnificent Mauao. Mauao is an extinct volcanic cone which rises above the town, but is colloquially known in New Zealand simply as The Mount.

Downtown Tauranga has several historically significant areas to view during a scenic walk around the area. The Strand waterfront area has undergone a major redevelopment in the past few years, and the changes include a children’s play area with water feature, seating areas and cultural artwork.

Go for a walk around the park (which houses Taurangas water supply), enjoy lunch at the café, then let the kids enjoy interacting with the farm animals. A great family day out! Head over the harbour bridge to Mount Maunganui, more locally known as simply ‘The Mount’. Recently voted the best beach in New Zealand and ranking within the top 25 in the world, Mount Main Beach is the perfect place for kids and adults alike. Watched over by life guards during the summer months, Main Beach is the perfect spot to relax before wandering the short distance to Mount Mainstreet to experience the vibrant café culture, boutique shopping and beachfront parks or reserves. You can’t take a trip to The Mount without taking advantage of its no 1 natural attraction – Mauao. Climb Mauao for amazing views. With an average walking time of about 3045 miuntes to the top – why not take a picnic? They even have benches too! Situated at the base of Mauao are the Mt Maunganui Hot Salt Water Pools, the country’s only geothermally-heated hot salt water pools.

White Island is a perfect example of an active volcano. It breathes, roars and hisses from steaming vents that release 800C gases. It’s wild! The Island is roughly circular, about 2km in diameter and rises to a height of 321m above sea level. However, what you are seeing is only the peak of a much larger submerged mountain. It has had 35 small to medium eruptions since 1826. You can take a guided tour with PeeJay White Island Tours (see below) and get up close and personal with the steaming vents and the green sulphur lakes.

In the early hours of the morning of June 10 1886, the Tarawera range was erupting. At 12:30am the first earthquakes were felt. People throughout the area were jolted awake as earthquakes became increasingly powerful. By 2.30am its three peaks were erupting, with columns reaching thousands of metres into the sky.

Where to see Rotorua’s geothermal wonders?

Destructive, hurricane force winds developed as the eruption columns sucked in air from the surrounding countryside. Violent electrical storms above the eruption columns blasted into the night sky, with water vapours poured out by the eruption causing torrential rains. The final length of the craters was a massive 16-km long. For the surviving local Maori, the eruption was devastating.

Worth a Look To gain an appreciation of what occured that night, visit the excavated sites at the Buried Village of Te Wairoa, which was actually buried by the 1886 Mt Tarawera eruption & has since been uncovered!

Brilliant colours are a feature of Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland’s Artists Palette and Champagne Pool. Lady Knox Geyser erupts every day high into the air. Visit the amazing Waimangu Volcanic Valley which is the youngest geothermal eco-system in the world with the largest hot water spring - 3.8 hectares - called Frying Pan Lakes. It was formed in the eruption of Mount Tarawera in 1886. Watch the famed Pohutu Geyser, the undisputed star of the Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley, erupt up to 20 times a day to heights of 30 metres at Te Puia. Hell’s Gate is New Zealand’s most active geothermal reserve with the largest hot waterfall in the Southern Hemisphere and the only geothermal mud baths in New Zealand.

Napier is one of New Zealand’s most attractive cities. Palm trees line the inner-city streets and the wonderfully sculpted Marine Parade, as the name suggests, runs along the shore of the city. Along Marine Parade various parks, gardens and memorials give the water’s edge its distinct character, and you’ll also find the i-SITE Visitor Centre and various local attractions.

Every year over 20 000 people opt to take a guided tour through its unique streets. Walking tours run every day rain or shine (except Christmas Day) and no bookings are necessary. Walks leave from the Napier i-SITE on Marine Parade every morning at 10am and afternoon tours leave from the Art Deco shop in Tennyson Street at 2pm.

Havelock North is the closest settlement to Cape Kidnappers. At Cape Kidnappers you can find the largest mainland gannet colony in the world. Explore it by 4WD adventure tour, by tractor ride along the beach (see opposite) or for the more adventurous, track the tides and do it yourself. It is also home to one of the world’s top golf courses.

Visitors can get within a few feet of gannet colony which is at the top of the Cape’s sheer and barren cliffs.
