The Wet season is November to April and the Dry season May to October. During January and February monsoon weather dumps heavy afternoon and overnight rain, which makes it quite humid but means you will get to see the beautiful waterfalls and lush tropical growth. Average temperatures range from 24° – 38°. The Red Centre has very little rain and very low humidity throughout the year. Nights can be much colder than further north (lowest on record for Alice Springs is -7.8°!), but generally winter ranges from 3° – 20° and summer 20° – 35°.
Time: The NT is on Australian Central Standard Time (ACST). They are ½ an hour behind Eastern States and they don't have daylight savings time so become 1½ hours behind from October to March. The NT is on the same time as Adelaide and is 1 1/2 hours ahead of Perth.

Darwin - Out & About The City of Darwin has many playgrounds throughout Darwin which are free to access and provide varying levels of activity challenge. Lake Alexander is a beauty at East Point (right on the water). The other major regional playgrounds are located in Anula and Jingili.
Darwin’s parks are excellent venues for everything from family get-togethers and festivals to open air meetings, functions and other corporate and community events. Bicentennial Park at The Esplanade, Lake Alexander and the Jingili Water Gardens should be checked out.

Out & About - Darwin The Fun Bus is a mobile playgroup service jointly With an emphasis on items that encourage healthy, funded by the City of Darwin and the Northern physical activities, the City of Darwin is proud to offer Territory Government. The playgroups are arangeofequipmentoptionsforcommunityevents. informal sessions where parents, carers, babies and children aged 0 to 5 years can come together in a relaxed and friendly environment. They provide children with an opportunity to have fun and interact with one another, whilst developing social and creative skills through play.
It operates weekdays between 9:30am and 11:30am for 46 weeks per year between February and December. For six weeks during the wet season, the Fun Bus operates from a variety of indoor/undercover venues and then for the rest of the year it operates at various outdoor locations throughout the municipality. The City of Darwin has a range of toys and activities available to use at your event, with everything from giant outdoor chess sets to inflatable belly bumpers. There is no hire charge with the exception of a small deposit, refundable on the safe return of the equipment. Visit East Point and Lake Alexander. Go swimming without fear of being eaten. It has a great undercover playground, BBQ areas and shady picnic spots.

is only 5km from the city and learn about the plants and animals native to the area from a knowledgeable ranger on one of their regular “talk sessions”.
Grab a bike and explore Darwin on some of the dedicated cycle trails. The trails run all the way from Darwin to Palmerston. Ride one way and catch the bus back! Maps are available from Darwin & Palmerston Councils (p.9)

The NT Museum & Art Gallery is free and has an awesome re-creation of Cyclone Tracey where you can feel & hear what it was like to be in the wind that devastated Darwin in 1974. They also have great indigenous artefacts and art.

Head to Livingstone Recreation Reserve (p.40) on a Friday Night and enjoy a cheap casual meal in a down to earth setting. About as “Aussie” as it gets!

Darwin Waterfront - Out & About A beach you can swim at in Darwin? Yes, you better believe it!! The Darwin Waterfront around the Stokes Hill Wharf areahasundergoneanamazingtransformationinthe last 5 years, and you should see it now!! It has a lifeguard patrolled Recreation Lagoon (which is safety netted) where you can swim without getting eaten, lie on the lush grassy lawns, sit under a tree or build a sandcastle.

Looking for more action? Then the Wave Lagoon Pool is a must! Located right next to the Recreation Lagoon, this world class aquatic playground is not to be missed. At night, the locals come out to play – the marina based locals! Batfish, barramundi, mangrove jack, mullet and even squid circle around under the lights of the restaurants. The Boatshed CafÊ is GREAT for families and even has a dedicated kids room, complete with DVDs. You can even ask for some fish food to feed them!

Cullen Bay - Out & About The main feature of this popular location is the magnificent Cullen Bay Marina, being home to over 250 vessels encompassed by some of the best restaurants that Darwin has to offer, and fringed by Darwin’s premium residential suburb.
Did You Know? Cullen Bay has the local public bus run direct into Mitchell St, so access to and from town for sightseeing or eating out is easy as!!!
Being in a typically tropical environment and subject to severe cyclones and weather extremes, Cullen Bay Marina (a man made facility) has been uniquely designed to protect its occupants against such natural elements thanks to its locked waterway and huge man made seawalls. There are cruise operators and fishing charters that operate from the marina, and we suggest the kids would love a ½ day fishing trip with Equinox (p.32) (who have kids themselves) and will look after you just right. Cullen Bay Resorts (see below) are an affordable self catering option for families with great BBQ areas around the family friendly pools - they have great views over the marina too.

Nearby the Darwin Waterfront complex has restaurants and take away to suit all tastes. Hot Tamale Mexican Restaurant, Il Lido and the new Precinct are worth a look. The meals at Fiddlers Green are huge!

Nightcliff Foreshore Situated off Casuarina Drive with plenty of car parking facilities, the footpath along the foreshore of Nightcliff is used for walking and cycling, particularly in the evenings after work. Along the footpath there is Nightcliff Jetty, Nightcliff Beach and Nightcliff Swimming Pool. The foreshore itself incorporates access to mangrovecommunities and the beach, along with links back to WWII historical sites. Casuarina Coastal Reserve Located in the city’s northern suburbs, this coastal reserve is a great place for a walk along the beach, to catch a sunset from the Dripstone Cliffs or enjoy a picnic in the shady recreational areas. Howard Springs An awesome place to take the kids for a few hours. Brand new facilities including flying foxes and climbing apparatus. Charles Darwin National Park Just a short drive from the city, this park was developed to show visitors the rich mangrove habitats of Darwin Harbour. Relics of Darwin’s involvement in WWII can also be seen here. These reinforced concrete bunkers were used for safe storage of munitions during the wartime action.

Kakadu National Park The largest in Australia. It is situated 250 km from Darwin on the Arnhem Highway. Renowned internationally for its natural and cultural wonders, Kakadu has one of the highest concentrated areas of Aboriginal rock art sites in the world. Litchfield National Park The 1,500 sq km2 park is an easy 1 1/2hr from Darwin. It contains several types of typical Top End habitats including lush monsoon forests, termite mounds, unusual rock formations, waterfalls and cascades. During monsoon season, four major waterfalls thunder from the cliffs to tropical rock pools metres below. During the rest of the year the waterfalls flow more gently, making the waterholes perfect spots for a cool dip.

Berry Springs Recreation Reserve
Located on Cox Peninsula Road near the Territory Wildlife Park in Berry Springs, the Reserve has an oval, cricket pitch, tennis and basketball courts. Plenty of open space with children’s play area and BBQ facilities, the reserve is also well known for the Territory Day Fireworks Celebrations in July. On the last Sunday of each month the Reserve also hosts the Berry Springs Community Markets where you can buy delicious local produce and gifts.
McMinns Lagoon Recreation Reserve

Travel 22km from Pine Creek and enjoy Umbrawarra Gorge which has shallow pools for swimming and a beautiful tranquil feel. Timber Creek was named in 1955 when the explorer Augustus Gregory used timber from the banks of the creek to repair his expedition’s boat. The first inhabitants were the Ngaliwurra and Nungali people, descendents of whom still live in Timber Creek.

CBD Hotels - Holiday Inn, Mantra and Novotel all have family rooms in the heart of the action. Our choice is the“resort”style Travelodge (see opposite) that has hotel rooms and apartments, with a great pool area for kids and true tropical feel. Cullen Bay Resort is 2 minutes out of the CBD with great views, fully furnished rooms and plenty of room to move for a longer stay. (The public bus stops outside.)

Litchfield
Lake Bennett Resort (see below) is perfectly situated and has canoeing, mini golf, pool and lake to keep the kids busy for hours.
Pine Creek / Katherine
Has the unique Railway Resort (p.43). Their restaurant is one of a kind. You’ll love it. Katherine has the IBIS Styles resort (p.45) and St Andrews Apartments (p.46) for a spacious self contained option, that has a great BBQ/pool area and a homely feel.
Alice Springs
The Alice treats families well! Mc Donnell Range (p.52) and Stuart Caravan Parks (p.53) have awesome family facilities for the travelling family. The Chifley (p.50) has hotel rooms and facilities perfect for families. Quest offers a really well located self catering option.

Whatever your budget, families are really well catered for in the NT. From Darwin right down to Alice, there are hotels, motels, family apartments, holiday parks, B&B’s and even the good old bush camping sites available everywhere.
If you are looking for a Holiday Park, Howard Springs (opposite) has FREE wifi, a new playground and jumping pillow and a great pool area. Close to Palmerston and only 20 minutes to the city. Also well located for Litchfield and Kakadu.
